Counting occurrences of 132 in an even permutation
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the generating function for the number of even (or odd) permutations on n letters containing exactly $r\gs0$ occurrences of 132. It is shown that finding this function for a given r amounts to a routine check of all permutations in $S_{2r}$.
Restricted permutations and queue jumping
Published • View PublicationBIB
A connection between permutations that avoid 4231 and a certain queueing discipline is established. It is proved that a more restrictive queueing discipline corresponds to avoiding both 4231 and 42513, and enumeration results for such permutations are given.

Some remarks on sign-balanced and maj-balanced posets
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let P be a poset with elements 1,2,...,n. We say that P is sign-balanced if exactly half the linear extensions of P (regarded as permutations of 1,2,...,n) are even permutations, i.e., have an even number of inversions. This concept first arose in the work of Frank Ruskey, who was interested in the efficient generation of all linear extensions of P. We survey a number of techniques for showing that posets are sign-balanced, and more generally, computing their "imbalance." There are close connections with domino tilings and, for certain posets, a "domino generalization" of Schur functions due to Carre and Leclerc. We also say that P is maj-balanced if exactly half the linear extensions of P have even major index. We discuss some similarities and some differences between sign-balanced and maj-balanced posets.

Quasirandom Permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Chung and Graham define quasirandom subsets of $\mathbb{Z}_n$ to be those with any one of a large collection of equivalent random-like properties. We weaken their definition and call a subset of $\mathbb{Z}_n$ $ε$-balanced if its discrepancy on each interval is bounded by $εn$. A quasirandom permutation, then, is one which maps each interval to a highly balanced set. In the spirit of previous studies of quasirandomness, we exhibit several random-like properties which are equivalent to this one, including the property of containing (approximately) the expected number of subsequences of each order-type. We provide a few applications of these results, present a construction for a family of strongly quasirandom permutations, and prove that this construction is essentially optimal, using a result of W. Schmidt on the discrepancy of sequences of real numbers.

Decomposition theorem for invertible substitutions on three-letter alphabet
Published • View PublicationBIB
We shall characterize the structure of invertible substitutions on three-letter alphabet. We show that any invertible substitution, after some cyclic operation, can be written as a finite product of permutations and Fibonacci's substitution. As a consequence, a matrix (of order 3 and with non-negative integral coefficients) is the matrix of an invertible substitution if and only if it is a finite product of non-negative elementary matrices.

H-admissible permutations and the HCP
This version is similar to math.CO/0210113. We've changed Conjectures 1.1 and 1.2 so that they cover arbitrary graphs(digraphs). Let G be an arbitrary graph(digraph). Then - in polynomial time - either an algorithm obtains a hamilton circuit(cycle)or else the algorithm points to at least one vertex that cannot belong to any hamilton circuit(cycle) of G. We give criteria for determining which vertices should be examined.
Transitive simple subgroups of wreath products in product action
Published • View PublicationBIB
A transitive simple subgroup of a finite symmetric group is very rarely contained in a full wreath product in product action. All such simple permutation groups are determined in this paper. This remarkable conclusion is reached after a definition and detailed examination of `Cartesian decompositions' of the permuted set, relating them to certain `Cartesian systemsof subgroups'. These concepts, and the bijective connections between them, are explored in greater generality, with specific future applications in mind.

Restricted 132-alternating permutations and Chebyshev polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
A permutation is said to be \emph{alternating} if it starts with rise and then descents and rises come in turn. In this paper we study the generating function for the number of alternating permutations on $n$ letters that avoid or contain exactly once 132 and also avoid or contain exactly once an arbitrary pattern on $k$ letters. In several interesting cases the generating function depends only on $k$ and is expressed via Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind.

Partially Ordered generalized patterns and k-ary words
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, Kitaev [Ki2] introduced partially ordered generalized patterns (POGPs) in the symmetric group, which further generalize the generalized permutation patterns introduced by Babson and Steingrímsson [BS]. A POGP p is a GP some of whose letters are incomparable. In this paper, we study the generating functions (g.f.) for the number of k-ary words avoiding some POGPs. We give analogues, extend and generalize several known results, as well as get some new results. In particular, we give the g.f. for the entire distribution of the maximum number of non-overlapping occurrences of a pattern p with no hyphens (that allowed to have repetition of letters), provided we know the g.f. for the number of k-ary words that avoid p.

Pattern avoidance in circular permutations
Circular permutations on {1,2,...,n} that avoid a given pattern correspond to ordinary (linear) permutations that end with n and avoid all cyclic rotations of the pattern. Three letter patterns are all but unavoidable in circular permutations and here we give explicit formulas for the number of circular permutations that avoid one four letter pattern. In the three essentially distinct cases, the counts are as follows: the Fibonacci number F_{2n-3} for the pattern 1324, 2^{n-1}-(n-1) for 1342, and 2^{n}+1-2n-{n}choose{3} for 1234.

Restricted 132-Dumont permutations
Published in Australasian Journal of Combinatorics, 2003 • Search Publication
A permutation $π$ is said to be {\em Dumont permutations of the first kind} if each even integer in $π$ must be followed by a smaller integer, and each odd integer is either followed by a larger integer or is the last element of $π$ (see, for example, \cite{Z}). In \cite{D} Dumont showed that certain classes of permutations on $n$ letters are counted by the Genocchi numbers. In particular, Dumont showed that the $(n+1)$st Genocchi number is the number of Dummont permutations of the first kind on $2n$ letters. In this paper we study the number of Dumont permutations of the first kind on $n$ letters avoiding the pattern 132 and avoiding (or containing exactly once) an arbitrary pattern on $k$ letters. In several interesting cases the generating function depends only on $k$.

The peak algebra of the symmetric group revisited
Published in Adv. in Math. 192 (2005), No. 2, 259-309 • View PublicationBIB
The linear span P_n of the sums of all permutations in the symmetric group S_n with a given set of peaks is a sub-algebra of the symmetric group algebra, due to Nyman. This peak algebra is a left ideal of the descent algebra D_n; and the direct sum P of all P_n is a Hopf sub-algebra of the direct sum D of all D_n, dual to the Stembridge algebra of peak functions. In our self-contained approach, peak counterparts of several results on the descent algebra are established, including a simple combinatorial characterization of the algebra P_n; an algebraic characterization of P_n based on the action on the Poincar'e-Birkhoff-Witt basis of the free associative algebra; the display of peak variants of the classical Lie idempotents; an Eulerian-type sub-algebra of P_n; a description of the Jacobson radical of P_n and its nil-potency index, of the principal indecomposable and irreducible P_n-modules, and of the Cartan matrix of P_n. Furthermore, it is shown that the primitive Lie algebra of P is free, and that P is its enveloping algebra.

On multi-avoidance of generalized patterns
In [Kit1] Kitaev discussed simultaneous avoidance of two 3-patterns with no internal dashes, that is, where the patterns correspond to contiguous subwords in a permutation. In three essentially different cases, the numbers of such $n$-permutations are $2^{n-1}$, the number of involutions in $\mathcal{S}_n$, and $2E_n$, where $E_n$ is the $n$-th Euler number. In this paper we give recurrence relations for the remaining three essentially different cases. To complete the descriptions in [Kit3] and [KitMans], we consider avoidance of a pattern of the form $x-y-z$ (a classical 3-pattern) and beginning or ending with an increasing or decreasing pattern. Moreover, we generalize this problem: we demand that a permutation must avoid a 3-pattern, begin with a certain pattern and end with a certain pattern simultaneously. We find the number of such permutations in case of avoiding an arbitrary generalized 3-pattern and beginning and ending with increasing or decreasing patterns.

Lie Elements and Knuth Relations
Published in Canadian J. Math. 56 (2004), No. 4, 871-882 • View PublicationBIB
A coplactic class in the symmetric group S_n consists of all permutations in S_n with a given Schensted Q-symbol, and may be described in terms of local relations introduced by Knuth. Any Lie element in the group algebra of S_n which is constant on coplactic classes is already constant on descent classes. As a consequence, the intersection of the Lie convolution algebra introduced by Patras and Reutenauer and the coplactic algebra introduced by Poirier and Reutenauer is the Solomon descent algebra.

Generalizations of two-stack-sortable permutations
In this thesis, we apply the stack sorting operator to $r$-permutations and construct the functional equation for the generating function of two-stack-sortable $k$-tuple $r$-permutations counted by descents by using a factorization similar to Zeilberger's. We solve the functional equation and give explicit formulas for the number of two-stack-sortable $r$-permutations.
Counterexamples to the 0-1 conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
For permutations x and w, let mu(x,w) be the coefficient of highest possible degree in the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial P_{x,w}. It is well-known that the coefficients mu(x,w) arise as the edge labels of certain graphs encoding the representations of S_n. The 0-1 Conjecture states that the mu(x,w) are either 0 or 1. We present two counterexamples to this conjecture, the first in S_16, for which x and w are in the same left cell, and the second in S_10. The proof of the counterexample in S_16 relies on computer calculations.

On the diagram of Schroeder permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Egge and Mansour have recently studied permutations which avoid 1243 and 2143 regarding the occurrence of certain additional patterns. Some of the open questions related to their work can easily be answered by using permutation diagrams. Like for 132-avoiding permutations the diagram approach gives insights into the structure of {1243,2143}-avoiding permutations that yield simple proofs for some enumerative results concerning forbidden patterns in such permutations.

Sorting with a forklift
Published • View PublicationBIB
A fork stack is a generalised stack which allows pushes and pops of several items at a time. We consider the problem of determining which input streams can be sorted using a single forkstack, or dually, which permutations of a fixed input stream can be produced using a single forkstack. An algorithm is given to solve the sorting problem and the minimal unsortable sequences are found. The results are extended to fork stacks where there are bounds on how many items can be pushed and popped at one time. In this context we also establish how to enumerate the collection of sortable sequences.

Symmetric Functions in Noncommuting Variables
Published • View PublicationBIB
Consider the algebra Q<<x_1,x_2,...>> of formal power series in countably many noncommuting variables over the rationals. The subalgebra Pi(x_1,x_2,...) of symmetric functions in noncommuting variables consists of all elements invariant under permutation of the variables and of bounded degree. We develop a theory of such functions analogous to the ordinary theory of symmetric functions. In particular, we define analogs of the monomial, power sum, elementary, complete homogeneous, and Schur symmetric functions as will as investigating their properties.
