Several authors have examined connections between permutations which avoid 132, continued fractions, and Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind. In this paper we prove analogues of some of these results for permutations which avoid 1243 and 2143. Using tools developed to prove these analogues, we give enumerations and generating functions for permutations which avoid 1243, 2143, and certain additional patterns. We also give generating functions for permutations which avoid 1243 and 2143 and contain certain additional patterns exactly once. In all cases we express these generating functions in terms of Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind.

We investigate the proportion of fixed point free permutations (derangements) in finite transitive permutation groups. This article is the first in a series where we prove a conjecture of Shalev that the proportion of such elements is bounded away from zero for a simple finite group. In fact, there are much stronger results. This article focuses on finite Chevalley groups of bounded rank. We also discuss derangements in algebraic groups and in more general primitive groups. These results have applications in questions about probabilistic generation of finite simple groups and maps between varieties over finite fields.

The diagram of a 132-avoiding permutation can easily be characterized: it is simply the diagram of a partition. Based on this fact, we present a new bijection between 132-avoiding and 321-avoiding permutations. We will show that this bijection translates the correspondences between these permutations and Dyck paths given by Krattenthaler and by Billey-Jockusch-Stanley, respectively, to each other. Moreover, the diagram approach yields simple proofs for some enumerative results concerning forbidden patterns in 132-avoiding permutations.
Avoiding 2-letter signed patterns
Let B_n be the hyperoctahedral group; that is, the set of all signed permutations on n letters, and let B_n(T) be the set of all signed permutations in B_n which avoids a set T of signed patterns. In this paper, we find all the cardinalities of the sets B_n(T) where $T \subseteq B_2$. This allow us to express these cardinalities via inverse of binomial coefficients, binomial coefficients, Catalan numbers, and Fibonacci numbers.

A 321-k-gon-avoiding permutation pi avoids 321 and the following four patterns: k(k+2)(k+3)...(2k-1)1(2k)23...(k+1), k(k+2)(k+3)...(2k-1)(2k)123...(k+1), (k+1)(k+2)(k+3)...(2k-1)1(2k)23...k, (k+1)(k+2)(k+3)...(2k-1)(2k)123...k. The 321-4-gon-avoiding permutations were introduced and studied by Billey and Warrington [BW] as a class of elements of the symmetric group whose Kazhdan-Lusztig, Poincare polynomials, and the singular loci of whose Schubert varieties have fairly simple formulas and descriptions. Stankova and West [SW] gave an exact enumeration in terms of linear recurrences with constant coefficients for the cases k=2,3,4. In this paper, we extend these results by finding an explicit expression for the generating function for the number of 321-k-gon-avoiding permutations on n letters. The generating function is expressed via Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind.

The wave functions of a quantum isotropic harmonic oscillator in N-space modified by barriers at the coordinate hyperplanes can be expressed in terms of certain generalized spherical harmonics. These are associated with a product-type weight function on the sphere. Their analysis is carried out by means of differential-difference operators. The symmetries of this system involve the Weyl group of type B, generated by permutations and changes of sign of the coordinates. A new basis for symmetric functions as well as an explicit transition matrix to the monomial basis is constructed. This basis leads to a basis for invariant spherical harmonics. The determinant of the Gram matrix for the basis in the natural inner product over the sphere is evaluated, and there is a formula for the evaluation of the basis elements at (1,1,...,1). When the underlying parameter is specialized to zero, the basis consists of ordinary spherical harmonics with cube group symmetry, as used for wave functions of electrons in crystals. The harmonic oscillator can also be considered as a degenerate interaction-free spin Calogero model.

A permutation P on {1,..,N} is a_fast_forward_permutation_ if for each m the computational complexity of evaluating P^m(x)$ is small independently of m and x. Naor and Reingold constructed fast forward pseudorandom cycluses and involutions. By studying the evolution of permutation graphs, we prove that the number of queries needed to distinguish a random cyclus from a random permutation on {1,..,N} is Theta(N) if one does not use queries of the form P^m(x), but is only Theta(1) if one is allowed to make such queries.
We construct fast forward permutations which are indistinguishable from random permutations even when queries of the form P^m(x) are allowed. This is done by introducing an efficient method to sample the cycle structure of a random permutation, which in turn solves an open problem of Naor and Reingold.
A new notion of transitivity for groups and sets of permutations

Let $Ω=\{1,2,...,n\}$ where $n \ge 2$. The {\em shape} of an ordered set partition $P=(P_1,..., P_k)$ of $Ω$ is the integer partition $λ=(λ_1,...,λ_k)$ defined by $λ_i = |P_i|$. Let G be a group of permutations acting on $Ω$. For a fixed partition $λ$ of n, we say that G is {\em $λ$-transitive} if G has only one orbit when acting on partitions P of shape $\la$. A corresponding definition can also be given when G is just a set. For example, if $λ=(n-t,1,...,1)$, then a $λ$-transitive group is the same as a t-transitive permutation group and if $λ=(n-t,t)$, then we recover the t-homogeneous permutation groups.
In this paper, we use the character theory of the symmetric group $S_n$ to establish some structural results regarding $λ$-transitive groups and sets. In particular, we are able to generalize a theorem of Livingstone and Wagner about t-homogeneous groups. We survey the relevant examples coming from groups. While it is known that a finite group of permutations can be at most 5-transitive unless it contains the alternating group, we show that it is possible to construct a non-trivial t-transitive set of permutations for each positive integer t. We also show how these ideas lead to a split basis for the association scheme of the symmetric group.

Let w_0 denote the permutation [n,n-1,...,2,1]. We give two new explicit formulae for the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials P_{w_0w,w_0x} in S_n when x is a maximal element in the singular locus of the Schubert variety X_w. To do this, we utilize a standard identity that relates P_{x,w} and P_{w_0w,w_0x}.
Pattern containment and combinatorial inequalities
We use a probabilistic method to produce some combinatorial inequalities by considering pattern containment in permutations and words.

Given an rc-graph $R$ of permutation $w$ and an rc-graph $Y$ of permutation $v$, we provide an insertion algorithm, which defines an rc-graph $R\leftarrow Y$ in the case when $v$ is a shuffle with the descent at $r$ and $w$ has no descents greater than $r$ or in the case when $v$ is a shuffle, whose shape is a hook. This algorithm gives a combinatorial rule for computing the generalized Littlewood-Richardson coefficients $c^{u}_{wv}$ in the two cases mentioned above.
Generalized pattern avoidance with additional restrictions
Babson and Steingrímsson introduced generalized permutation patterns that allow the requirement that two adjacent letters in a pattern must be adjacent in the permutation. We consider n-permutations that avoid the generalized pattern 1-32 and whose k rightmost letters form an increasing subword. The number of such permutations is a linear combination of Bell numbers. We find a bijection between these permutations and all partitions of an $(n-1)$-element set with one subset marked that satisfy certain additional conditions. Also we find the e.g.f. for the number of permutations that avoid a generalized 3-pattern with no dashes and whose k leftmost or k rightmost letters form either an increasing or decreasing subword. Moreover, we find a bijection between n-permutations that avoid the pattern 132 and begin with the pattern 12 and increasing rooted trimmed trees with n+1 nodes.

132-avoiding Two-stack Sortable Permutations, Fibonacci Numbers, and Pell Numbers

In 1990 West conjectured that there are $2(3n)!/((n+1)!(2n+1)!)$ two-stack sortable permutations on $n$ letters. This conjecture was proved analytically by Zeilberger in 1992. Later, Dulucq, Gire, and Guibert gave a combinatorial proof of this conjecture. In the present paper we study generating functions for the number of two-stack sortable permutations on $n$ letters avoiding (or containing exactly once) 132 and avoiding (or containing exactly once) an arbitrary permutation $τ$ on $k$ letters. In several interesting cases this generating function can be expressed in terms of the generating function for the Fibonacci numbers or the generating function for the Pell numbers.
Smoothness of Schubert varieties via patterns in root systems

The aim of this article is to present a smoothness criterion for Schubert varieties in generalized flag manifolds $G/B$ in terms of patterns in root systems. We generalize Lakshmibai-Sandhya's well-known result that says that a Schubert variety in $SL(n)/B$ is smooth if and only if the corresponding permutation avoids the patterns 3412 and 4231. Our criterion is formulated uniformly in general Lie theoretic terms. We define a notion of pattern in Weyl group elements and show that a Schubert variety is smooth (or rationally smooth) if and only if the corresponding element of the Weyl group avoids a certain finite list of patterns. These forbidden patterns live only in root subsystems with star-shaped Dynkin diagrams. In the simply-laced case the list of forbidden patterns is especially simple: besides two patterns of type $A_3$ that appear in Lakshmibai-Sandhya's criterion we only need one additional forbidden pattern of type $D_4$. Remarkably, several other important classes of elements in Weyl groups can also be described in terms of forbidden patterns. For example, the fully commutative elements in Weyl groups have such a characterization. In order to prove our criterion we used several known results for the classical types. For the exceptional types, our proof is based on computer verifications. In order to conduct such a verification for the computationally challenging type $E_8$, we derived several general results on Poincaré polynomials of cohomology rings of Schubert varieties based on parabolic decomposition, which have an independent interest.
Simultaneous avoidance of generalized patterns
In [BabStein] Babson and Steingrímsson introduced generalized permutation patterns that allow the requirement that two adjacent letters in a pattern must be adjacent in the permutation. In [Kit1] Kitaev considered simultaneous avoidance (multi-avoidance) of two or more 3-patterns with no internal dashes, that is, where the patterns correspond to contiguous subwords in a permutation. There either an explicit or a recursive formula was given for all but one case of simultaneous avoidance of more than two patterns.
In this paper we find the exponential generating function for the remaining case. Also we consider permutations that avoid a pattern of the form $x-yz$ or $xy-z$ and begin with one of the patterns $12... k$, $k(k-1)... 1$, $23... k1$, $(k-1)(k-2)... 1k$ or end with one of the patterns $12... k$, $k(k-1)... 1$, $1k(k-1)... 2$, $k12... (k-1)$. For each of these cases we find either the ordinary or exponential generating functions or a precise formula for the number of such permutations. Besides we generalize some of the obtained results as well as some of the results given in [Kit3]: we consider permutations avoiding certain generalized 3-patterns and beginning (ending) with an arbitrary pattern having either the greatest or the least letter as its rightmost (leftmost) letter.
Tilting modules for cyclotomic Schur algebras

This paper investigates the tilting modules of the cyclotomic q-Schur algebras, the Young modules of the Ariki-Koike algebras, and the interconnections between them. The main tools used to understand the tilting modules are contragredient duality, and the Specht filtrations and dual Specht filtrations of certain permutation modules. Surprisingly, Weyl filtrations -- which are in general more powerful than Specht filtrations -- play only a secondary role.
Increasing subsequences and the hard-to-soft edge transition in matrix ensembles

Our interest is in the cumulative probabilities Pr(L(t) \le l) for the maximum length of increasing subsequences in Poissonized ensembles of random permutations, random fixed point free involutions and reversed random fixed point free involutions. It is shown that these probabilities are equal to the hard edge gap probability for matrix ensembles with unitary, orthogonal and symplectic symmetry respectively. The gap probabilities can be written as a sum over correlations for certain determinantal point processes. From these expressions a proof can be given that the limiting form of Pr(L(t) \le l) in the three cases is equal to the soft edge gap probability for matrix ensembles with unitary, orthogonal and symplectic symmetry respectively, thereby reclaiming theorems due to Baik-Deift-Johansson and Baik-Rains.

The EKG or electrocardiogram sequence is defined by a(1) = 1, a(2) = 2 and, for n >= 3, a(n) is the smallest natural number not already in the sequence with the property that gcd {a(n-1), a(n)} > 1. In spite of its erratic local behavior, which when plotted resembles an electrocardiogram, its global behavior appears quite regular. We conjecture that almost all a(n) satisfy the asymptotic formula a(n) = n(1 + 1/(3 log n) + o(n/log n)) as n goes to infty; and that the exceptional values a(n) = p and a(n) = 3p, for p a prime, produce the spikes in the EKG sequence. We prove that {a(n): n >= 1} is a permutation of the natural numbers and that c_1 n <= a (n) <= c_2 n for constants c_1, c_2. There remains a large gap between what is conjectured and what is proved.
