Counting occurrences of a pattern of type (1,2) or (2,1) in permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Babson and Steingrímsson introduced generalized permutation patterns that allow the requirement that two adjacent letters in a pattern must be adjacent in the permutation. Claesson presented a complete solution for the number of permutations avoiding any single pattern of type $(1,2)$ or $(2,1)$. For eight of these twelve patterns the answer is given by the Bell numbers. For the remaining four the answer is given by the Catalan numbers. With respect to being equidistributed there are three different classes of patterns of type $(1,2)$ or $(2,1)$. We present a recursion for the number of permutations containing exactly one occurrence of a pattern of the first or the second of the aforementioned classes, and we also find an ordinary generating function for these numbers. We prove these results both combinatorially and analytically. Finally, we give the distribution of any pattern of the third class in the form of a continued fraction, and we also give explicit formulas for the number of permutations containing exactly $r$ occurrences of a pattern of the third class when $r\in\{1,2,3\}$.

Continued fractions and generalized patterns

In [BS] Babson and Steingrimsson introduced generalized permutation patterns that allow the requirement that two adjacent letters in a pattern must be adjacent in the permutation. Let $f_{τ;r}(n)$ be the number of $1\mn3\mn2$-avoiding permutations on $n$ letters that contain exactly $r$ occurrences of $τ$, where $τ$ a generalized pattern on $k$ letters. Let $F_{τ;r}(x)$ and $F_τ(x,y)$ be the generating functions defined by $F_{τ;r}(x)=\sum_{n\geq0} f_{τ;r}(n)x^n$ and $F_τ(x,y)=\sum_{r\geq0}F_{τ;r}(x)y^r$. We find an explicit expression for $F_τ(x,y)$ in the form of a continued fraction for where $τ$ given as a generalized pattern; $τ=12\mn3\mn...\mn k$, $τ=21\mn3\mn...\mn k$, $τ=123... k$, or $τ=k... 321$. In particularly, we find $F_τ(x,y)$ for any $τ$ generalized pattern of length 3. This allows us to express $F_{τ;r}(x)$ via Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind, and continued fractions.

restricted 1-3-2 permutations and generalized patterns
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, Babson and Steingrimsson (see [BS]) introduced generalized permutations patterns that allow the requirement that two adjacent letters in a pattern must be adjacent in the permutation. We study generating functions for the number of permutations on $n$ letters avoiding $1-3-2$ (or containing $1-3-2$ exactly once) and an arbitrary generalized pattern $τ$ on $k$ letters, or containing $τ$ exactly once. In several cases the generating function depends only on $k$ and is expressed via Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind, and generating function of Motzkin numbers.

Continued fractions, statistics, and generalized patterns
Recently, Babson and Steingrimsson (see \cite{BS}) introduced generalized permutations patterns that allow the requirement that two adjacent letters in a pattern must be adjacent in the permutation. Following \cite{BCS}, let $e_kπ$ (respectively; $f_kπ$) be the number of the occurrences of the generalized pattern $12\mn3\mn...\mn k$ (respectively; $21\mn3\mn...\mn k$) in $π$. In the present note, we study the distribution of the statistics $e_kπ$ and $f_kπ$ in a permutation avoiding the classical pattern $1\mn3\mn2$. Also we present an applications, which relates the Narayana numbers, Catalan numbers, and increasing subsequences, to permutations avoiding the classical pattern $1\mn3\mn2$ according to a given statistics on $e_kπ$, or on $f_kπ$.

On counting permutations by pairs of congruence classes of major index
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a fixed positive integer n, let S_n denote the symmetric group of n! permutations on n symbols, and let maj(sigma) denote the major index of a permutation sigma. For positive integers k<m not greater than n and non-negative integers i and j, we give enumerative formulas for the cardinality of the set of permutations sigma in S_n with maj(sigma) congruent to i mod k and maj(sigma^(-1)) congruent to j mod m. When m divides n-1 and k divides n, we show that for all i,j, this cardinality equals (n!)/(km).

Natural Associativity without the Pentagon condition
A premonoidal category is equipped only with a bifunctor and a natural isomorphism for associativity. We introduce a (deformation) natural automorphism representing the deviation from the Pentagon condition. We uncover a binary tree representation for all diagrams involving associativity natural isomorphisms and (deformation) natural automorphisms and provide a link to permutations and linear orderings. This leads to other notions of premonoidalness. We define these notions and prove coherence results for each.

The Rank and Minimal Border Strip Decompositions of a Skew Partition
Published • View PublicationBIB
Nazarov and Tarasov recently generalized the notion of the rank of a partition to skew partitions. We give several characterizations of the rank of a skew partition and one possible characterization that remains open. One of the characterizations involves the decomposition of a skew shape into a minimal number of border strips, and we develop a theory of these MBSD's as well as of the closely related minimal border strip tableaux. An application is given to the value of a character of the symmetric group S_n indexed by a skew shape z at a permutation whose number of cycles is the rank of z.

GL(n,q) and Increasing Subsequences in Nonuniform Random Permutations

Connections between longest increasing subsequences in random permutations and eigenvalues of random matrices with complex entries have been intensely studied. This note applies properties of random elements of the finite general linear group to obtain results about the longest increasing subsequence in non- uniform random permutations.

Restricted set of patterns, continued fractions, and Chebyshev polynomials
We study generating functions for the number of permutations in $S_n$ subject to set of restrictions. One of the restrictions belongs to $S_3$, while the others to $S_k$. It turns out that in a large variety of cases the answer can be expressed via continued fractions, and Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind.

Subsequence containment by involutions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Inspired by work of McKay, Morse, and Wilf, we give an exact count of the involutions in S_n which contain a given permutation τin S_k as a subsequence; this number depends on the patterns of the first j values of τfor 1<=j<=k. We then use this to define a partition of S_k, analogous to Wilf-classes in the study of pattern avoidance, and examine properties of this equivalence. In the process, we show that a permutation τ_1...τ_k is layered iff, for 1<=j<=k, the pattern of τ_1...τ_j is an involution. We also obtain a result of Sagan and Stanley counting the standard Young tableaux of size $n$ which contain a fixed tableau of size $k$ as a subtableau.

Enumerating permutations avoiding a pair of Babson-Steingrimsson patterns
Babson and Steingrìmsson introduced generalized permutation patterns that allow the requirement that two adjacent letters in a pattern must be adjacent in the permutation. Subsequently, Claesson presented a complete solution for the number of permutations avoiding any single pattern of type (1,2) or (2,1). For eight of these twelve patterns the answer is given by the Bell numbers. For the remaining four the answer is given by the Catalan numbers. In the present paper we give a complete solution for the number of permutations avoiding a pair of patterns of type (1,2) or (2,1). We also conjecture the number of permutations avoiding the patterns in any set of three or more such patterns.

Explicit Enumeration of 321,Hexagon-Avoiding Permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
The 321,hexagon-avoiding (321-hex) permutations were introduced and studied by Billey and Warrington in as a class of elements of S_n whose Kazhdan-Lusztig and Poincare polynomials and the singular loci of whose Schubert varieties have certain fairly simple and explicit descriptions. This paper provides a 7-term linear recurrence relation leading to an explicit enumeration of the 321-hex permutations. A complete description of the corresponding generating tree is obtained as a by-product of enumeration techniques used in the paper, including Schensted's 321-subsequences decomposition, a 5-parameter generating function and the symmetries of the octagonal patterns avoided by the 321-hex permutations.

Noncommutative symmetric functions VI: Free quasi-symmetric functions and related algebras
Published in International Journal of Algebra and Computation 12 (2002), 671-717 • View PublicationBIB
This article is devoted to the study of several algebras which are related to symmetric functions, and which admit linear bases labelled by various combinatorial objects: permutations (free quasi-symmetric functions), standard Young tableaux (free symmetric functions) and packed integer matrices (matrix quasi-symmetric functions). Free quasi-symmetric functions provide a kind of noncommutative Frobenius characteristic for a certain category of modules over the 0-Hecke algebras. New examples of indecomposable $H_n(0)$-modules are discussed, and the homological properties of $H_n(0)$ are computed for small $n$. Finally, the algebra of matrix quasi-symmetric functions is interpreted as a convolution algebra.

We study the generating function for the number of permutations on n letters containing exactly $r\gs0$ occurences of 132. It is shown that finding this function for a given r amounts to a routine check of all permutations in $S_{2r}$.

The distribution of values in the quadratic assignment problem
Published • View PublicationBIB
We obtain a number of results regarding the distribution of values of a quadratic function f on the set of nxn permutation matrices (identified with the symmetric group S_n) around its optimum (minimum or maximum). In particular, we estimate the fraction of permutations sigma such that f(sigma) lies within a given neighborhood of the optimal value of f. We identify some ``extreme'' functions f (there are 4 of those for n even and 5 for n odd) such that the distribution of every quadratic function around its optimum is a certain ``mixture'' of the distributions of the extremes and describe a natural class of functions (which includes, for example, the objective function in the Traveling Salesman Problem) with a relative abundance of near-optimal permutations. In particular, we identify a large class of functions f with the property that permutations in the vicinity of the optimal permutation (in the Hamming metric of S_n) tend to produce near optimal values of f (such is, for example, the objective function in the symmetric Traveling Salesman Problem) and show that for general f, just the opposite behavior may take place: an average permutation in the vicinity of the optimal permutation may be much worse than an average permutation in the whole group S_n.

Pattern frequency sequences and internal zeros
Consider the number of permutations in the symmetric group on n letters that contain c copies of a given pattern. As c varies (with n held fixed) these numbers form a sequence whose properties we study for the monotone patterns and the patterns 1, l, l-1, ..., 2. We show that, except for the patterns 1, 2 and 2, 1 where the sequence is well-known to be log concave, there are infinitely many n where the sequence has internal zeros.

A New Class of Wilf-Equivalent Permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
For about 10 years, the classification of permutation patterns was thought completed up to length 6. In this paper, we establish a new class of Wilf-equivalent permutation patterns, namely, (n-1,n-2,n,tau)~(n-2,n,n-1,tau) for any tau in S_{n-3}. In particular, at level n=6, this result includes the only missing equivalence (546213)~(465213), and for n=7 it completes the classification of permutation patterns by settling all remaining cases in S_7.

Applications of Symmetric Functions to Cycle and Subsequence Structure after Shuffles
Published • View PublicationBIB
Using symmetric function theory, we study the cycle structure and increasing subsequence structure of permutations after various shuffling methods, emphasizing the role of Cauchy type identities and the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence. One consequence is a cycle index for riffle shuffles when one deals from the bottom of the deck; conclusions are drawn concerning the distribution of fixed points and the asymptotic distribution of cycle structure. In studying cycle structure of unimodal permutations and their generalizations we are led to an interesting variation of the RSK correspondence. This yields a probabilistic interpretation of a Schur-type function.
