The symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ acts on the polynomial ring $\mathbb{Q}[\mathbf{x}_n] = \mathbb{Q}[x_1, \dots, x_n]$ by variable permutation. The invariant ideal $I_n$ is the ideal generated by all $\mathfrak{S}_n$-invariant polynomials with vanishing constant term. The quotient $R_n = \frac{\mathbb{Q}[\mathbf{x}_n]}{I_n}$ is called the coinvariant algebra. The coinvariant algebra $R_n$ has received a great deal of study in algebraic and geometric combinatorics. We introduce a generalization $I_{n,k} \subseteq \mathbb{Q}[\mathbf{x}_n]$ of the ideal $I_n$ indexed by two positive integers $k \leq n$. The corresponding quotient $R_{n,k} := \frac{\mathbb{Q}[\mathbf{x}_n]}{I_{n,k}}$ carries a graded action of $\mathfrak{S}_n$ and specializes to $R_n$ when $k = n$. We generalize many of the nice properties of $R_n$ to $R_{n,k}$. In particular, we describe the Hilbert series of $R_{n,k}$, give extensions of the Artin and Garsia-Stanton monomial bases of $R_n$ to $R_{n,k}$, determine the reduced Gröbner basis for $I_{n,k}$ with respect to the lexicographic monomial order, and describe the graded Frobenius series of $R_{n,k}$. Just as the combinatorics of $R_n$ are controlled by permutations in $\mathfrak{S}_n$, we will show that the combinatorics of $R_{n,k}$ are controlled by ordered set partitions of $\{1, 2, \dots, n\}$ with $k$ blocks. The {\em Delta Conjecture} of Haglund, Remmel, and Wilson is a generalization of the Shuffle Conjecture in the theory of diagonal coinvariants. We will show that the graded Frobenius series of $R_{n,k}$ is (up to a minor twist) the $t = 0$ specialization of the combinatorial side of the Delta Conjecture. It remains an open problem to give a bigraded $\mathfrak{S}_n$-module $V_{n,k}$ whose Frobenius image is even conjecturally equal to any of the expressions in the Delta Conjecture; our module $R_{n,k}$ solves this problem in the specialization $t = 0$.

For a tree $G$, we study the changing behaviors in the homology groups $H_i(B_nG)$ as $n$ varies, where $B_nG := π_1($UConf$_n(G))$. We prove that the ranks of these homologies can be described by a single polynomial for all $n$, and construct this polynomial explicitly in terms of invariants of the tree $G$. To accomplish this we prove that the group $\bigoplus_n H_i(B_nG)$ can be endowed with the structure of a finitely generated graded module over an integral polynomial ring, and further prove that it naturally decomposes as a direct sum of graded shifts of squarefree monomial ideals. Following this, we spend time considering how our methods might be generalized to braid groups of arbitrary graphs, and make various conjectures in this direction.

We introduce the quasi-key basis of the polynomial ring. We prove this basis contains the quasi-Schur polynomials of of Haglund, Luoto, Mason and van Willigenburg and that stable limits of quasi-key polynomials are quasi-Schur functions, thus giving a lifting of the quasi-Schur basis of quasisymmetric polynomials to the full polynomial ring. We introduce the combinatorial model of Kohnert tableaux, and use this model to prove that key polynomials expand positively in quasi-key polynomials which in turn expand positively in the fundamental slide polynomials introduced earlier by the authors. We give simple combinatorial formulas for these expansions in terms of Kohnert tableaux, lifting the parallel expansions of a Schur function into quasi-Schur functions into fundamental quasisymmetric functions. We further utilize Kohnert tableaux to find the precise point at which the fundamental slide expansion of a key polynomial stabilizes.

Let $G$ be a graph with $n$ vertices and $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $\mathbb{K}$. Assume that $J(G)$ is the cover ideal of $G$ and $J(G)^{(k)}$ is its $k$-th symbolic power. We prove that if $G$ is a very well-covered graph such that $J(G)$ has linear resolution, then $J(G)^{(k)}$ has linear resolution, for every integer $k\geq 1$. We also prove that for a every very well-covered graph $G$, the depth of symbolic powers of $J(G)$ forms a non-increasing sequence. Finally, we determine a linear upper bound for the regularity of powers of cover ideal of bipartite graph.

Let $\mathbb{K}$ be a field and $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over $\mathbb{K}$. Let $G$ be a graph with $n$ vertices. Assume that $I=I(G)$ is the edge ideal of $G$ and $J=J(G)$ is its cover ideal. We prove that ${\rm sdepth}(J)\geq n-ν_{o}(G)$ and ${\rm sdepth}(S/J)\geq n-ν_{o}(G)-1$, where $ν_{o}(G)$ is the ordered matching number of $G$. We also prove the inequalities ${\rm sdepth}(J^k)\geq {\rm depth}(J^k)$ and ${\rm sdepth}(S/J^k)\geq {\rm depth}(S/J^k)$, for every integer $k\gg 0$, when $G$ is a bipartite graph. Moreover, we provide an elementary proof for the known inequality ${\rm reg}(S/I)\leq ν_{o}(G)$.

We introduce two new bases for polynomials that lift monomial and fundamental quasisymmetric functions to the full polynomial ring. By defining a new condition on pipe dreams, called quasi-Yamanouchi, we give a positive combinatorial rule for expanding Schubert polynomials into these new bases that parallels the expansion of Schur functions into fundamental quasisymmetric functions. As a result, we obtain a refinement of the stable limits of Schubert polynomials to Stanley symmetric functions. We also give combinatorial rules for the positive structure constants of these bases that generalize the quasi-shuffle product and shuffle product, respectively. We use this to give a Littlewood--Richardson rule for expanding a product of Schubert polynomials into fundamental slide polynomials and to give formulas for products of Stanley symmetric functions in terms of Schubert structure constants.

Let $S$ be a multigraded polynomial ring such that the degree of each variable is a unit vector; so $S$ is the homogeneous coordinate ring of a product of projective spaces. In this setting, we characterize the formal Laurent series which arise as Hilbert series of finitely generated $S$-modules.
Also we provide necessary conditions for a formal Laurent series to be the Hilbert series of a finitely generated module with a given depth. In the bigraded case (corresponding to the product of two projective spaces), we completely classify the Hilbert series of finitely generated modules of positive depth.

We study the footprint function, with respect to a monomial order, of complete intersection graded ideals in a polynomial ring with coefficients in a field. For graded ideals of dimension one, whose initial ideal is a complete intersection, we give a formula for the footprint function and a sharp lower bound for the corresponding minimum distance function. This allows us to recover a formula for the minimum distance of an affine cartesian code and the fact that in this case the minimum distance and the footprint functions coincide. Then we present an extension of a result of Alon and Füredi, about coverings of the cube $\{0,1\}^n$ by affine hyperplanes, in terms of the regularity of a vanishing ideal.

We introduce and study the minimum distance function of a graded ideal in a polynomial ring with coefficients in a field, and show that it generalizes the minimum distance of projective Reed-Muller-type codes over finite fields. This gives an algebraic formulation of the minimum distance of a projective Reed-Muller-type code in terms of the algebraic invariants and structure of the underlying vanishing ideal. Then we give a method, based on Groebner bases and Hilbert functions, to find lower bounds for the minimum distance of certain Reed-Muller-type codes. Finally we show explicit upper bounds for the number of zeros of polynomials in a projective nested cartesian set and give some support to a conjecture of Carvalho, Lopez-Neumann and Lopez.
The Cohen-Macaulayness of the bounded complex of an affine oriented matroid

An affine oriented matroid is a combinatorial abstraction of an affine hyperplane arrangement. From it, Novik, Postnikov and Sturmfels constructed a squarefree monomial ideal in a polynomial ring, called an oriented matroid ideal, and got beautiful results. Developing their theory, we will show the following.
(1) If an oriented matroid ideal is Cohen-Macaulay, then the bounded complex (a regular CW complex associated with it) of the corresponding affine oriented matroid is a contractible homology manifold with boundary. This is closely related to Dong's theorem, which used to be "Zaslavsky's conjecture".
(2) We characterize the affine oriented matroid whose corresponding ideal is Cohen-Macaulay.
(3) In the Cohen-Macaulay case, we give a description of the canonical module of the residue class ring by an oriented matroid ideal.
A Fibonacci analogue of Stirling numbers
Consider the Fibonacci numbers defined by setting $F_1=1=F_2$ and $F_n =F_{n-1}+F_{n-2}$ for $n \geq 3$. We let $n_F! = F_1 \cdots F_n$ and $\binom{n}{k}_F = \frac{n_F!}{k_F!(n-k)_F!}$. Let $(x)_{\downarrow_0} = (x)_{\uparrow_0} = 1$ and for $k \geq 1$, $(x)_{\downarrow_k} = x(x-1) \cdots (x-k+1)$ and $(x)_{\uparrow_k} = x(x+1) \cdots (x+k-1)$. Then the Stirling numbers of the first and second kind are the connections coefficients between the usual power basis $\{x^n:n \geq 0\}$ and the falling factorial basis $\{(x)_{\downarrow_n}:n \geq 0\}$ in the polynomial ring $\mathbb{Q}[x]$ and the Lah numbers are the connections coefficients between the rising factorial basis $\{(x)_{\uparrow_n}:n \geq 0\}$ and the falling factorial basis $\{(x)_{\downarrow_n}:n \geq 0\}$ in the polynomial ring $\mathbb{Q}[x]$.
The goal of this paper is to find Fibonacci analogues for the Stirling numbers of the first and second kind and the Lah numbers. Our idea is to replace the falling factorial basis and the rising factorial basis by the Fibo-falling factorial basis $\{(x)_{\downarrow_{F,n}}:n \geq 0\}$ and the Fibo-rising factorial basis $\{(x)_{\uparrow_{F,n}}:n \geq 0\}$ where $(x)_{\downarrow_{F,0}} = (x)_{\uparrow_{F,0}} = 1$ and for $k \geq 1$, $(x)_{\downarrow_{F,k}} = x(x-F_1) \cdots (x-F_{k-1})$ and $(x)_{\uparrow_{F,k}} = x(x+F_1) \cdots (x+F_{k-1})$. Then we study the combinatorics of the connection coefficients betweenthe usual power basis, the Fibo-falling factorial basis, and the Fibo-rising factorial basis. In each case, we can give a rook theory model for the connections coefficients and show how this rook theory model can give combinatorial explanations for many of the properties of these coefficients.
Betti posets and the Stanley depth

Let $S$ be a polynomial ring and let $I \subseteq S$ be a monomial ideal. In this short note, we propose the conjecture that the Betti poset of $I$ determines the Stanley projective dimension of $S/I$ or $I$. Our main result is that this conjecture implies the Stanley conjecture for $I$, and it also implies that \[ \operatorname{sdepth} S/I \geq \operatorname{depth} S/I - 1.\] Recently, Duval et al. found a counterexample to the Stanley conjecture, and their counterexample satisfies $\operatorname{sdepth} S/I = \operatorname{depth} S/I - 1$. So if our conjecture is true, then the conclusion is best possible.

Let $\mathbb{K}$ be a field and $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over $\mathbb{K}$. Let $G$ be a graph with $n$ vertices. Assume that $I=I(G)$ is the edge ideal of $G$ and $p$ is the number of its bipartite connected components. We prove that for every positive integer $k$, the inequalities ${\rm sdepth}(I^k/I^{k+1})\geq p$ and ${\rm sdepth}(S/I^k)\geq p$ hold. As a consequence, we conclude that $S/I^k$ satisfies the Stanley's inequality for every integer $k\geq n-1$. Also, it follows that $I^k/I^{k+1}$ satisfies the Stanley's inequality for every integer $k\gg 0$. Furthermore, we prove that if (i) $G$ is a non-bipartite graph, or (ii) at least one of the connected components of $G$ is a tree with at least one edge, then $I^k$ satisfies the Stanley's inequality for every integer $k\geq n-1$. Moreover, we verify a conjecture of the author in special cases.

In this work a combinatorial approach towards the weak Lefschetz property is developed that relates this property to enumerations of signed perfect matchings as well as to enumerations of signed families of non-intersecting lattice paths in certain triangular regions. This connection is used to study Artinian quotients by monomial ideals of a three-dimensional polynomial ring. Extending a main result in the recent memoir [Boij, Migliore, Miró-Roig, Nagel, Zanello], we completely classify the quotients of type two that have the weak Lefschetz property in characteristic zero. We also derive results in positive characteristic for quotients whose type is at most two.

We construct the affine version of the Fomin-Kirillov algebra, called the affine FK algebra, to investigate the combinatorics of affine Schubert calculus for type $A$. We introduce Murnaghan-Nakayama elements and Dunkl elements in the affine FK algebra. We show that they are commutative as Bruhat operators, and the commutative algebra generated by these operators is isomorphic to the cohomology of the affine flag variety. We show that the cohomology of the affine flag variety is product of the cohomology of an affine Grassmannian and a flag variety, which are generated by MN elements and Dunkl elements respectively. The Schubert classes in cohomology of the affine Grassmannian (resp. the flag variety) can be identified with affine Schur functions (resp. Schubert polynomials) in a quotient of the polynomial ring. Affine Schubert polynomials, polynomial representatives of the Schubert class in the cohomology of the affine flag variety, can be defined in the product of two quotient rings using the Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand operators interpreted as divided difference operators acting on the affine Fomin-Kirillov algebra. As for other applications, we obtain Murnaghan-Nakayama rules both for the affine Schubert polynomials and affine Stanley symmetric functions. We also define $k$-strong-ribbon tableaux from Murnaghan-Nakayama elements to provide a new formula of $k$-Schur functions. This formula gives the character table of the representation of the symmetric group whose Frobenius characteristic image is the $k$-Schur function.

To each prime ideal in a polynomial ring over a field we associate an algebraic matroid and show that it is preserved under tropicalization. This gives a necessary condition for a tropical variety to be set-theoretically realizable from a prime ideal. We also show that there are infinitely many Bergman fans that are not set-theoretically realizable as the tropicalization of any ideal.

Let $Δ$ be a pure simplicial complex and $I_Δ$ its Stanley-Reisner ideal in a polynomial ring $S$. We show that $Δ$ is a matroid (complete intersection) if and only if $S/I_Δ^{(m)}$ ($S/I_Δ^m$) is clean for all $m\in\mathbb{N}$. If $\dim(Δ)=1$, we also prove that $S/I_Δ^{(2)}$ ($S/I_Δ^2$) is clean if and only if $S/I_Δ^{(2)}$ ($S/I_Δ^2$) is Cohen-Macaulay.

Let $\mathbb{K}$ be a field and $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,...,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over the field $\mathbb{K}$. For every monomial ideal $I\subset S$, We provide a recursive formula to determine a lower bound for the Stanley depth of $S/I$. We use this formula to prove the inequality ${\rm sdepth}(S/I)\geq {\rm size}(I)$ for a particular class of monomial ideals.
Quasi-Stable ideals and Borel-fixed ideals with a given Hilbert Polynomial

The present paper investigates properties of quasi-stable ideals and of Borel-fixed ideals in a polynomial ring $k[x_0,\dots,x_n]$, in order to design two algorithms: the first one takes as input $n$ and an admissible Hilbert polynomial $P(z)$, and outputs the complete list of saturated quasi-stable ideals in the chosen polynomial ring with the given Hilbert polynomial. The second algorithm has an extra input, the characteristic of the field $k$, and outputs the complete list of saturated Borel-fixed ideals in $k[x_0,\dots,x_n]$ with Hilbert polynomial $P(z)$. The key tool for the proof of both algorithms is the combinatorial structure of a quasi-stable ideal, in particular we use a special set of generators for the considered ideals, the Pommaret basis.
