Alex Postnikov has given a combinatorially explicit cell decomposition of the totally nonnegative part of a Grassmannian, denoted Gr_{kn}+, and showed that this set of cells is isomorphic as a graded poset to many other interesting graded posets. The main result of this paper is an explicit generating function which enumerates the cells in Gr_{kn}+ according to their dimension. As a corollary, we give a new proof that the Euler characteristic of Gr_{kn}+ is 1. Additionally, we use our result to produce a new q-analog of the Eulerian numbers, which interpolates between the Eulerian numbers, the Narayana numbers, and the binomial coefficients.
Singular locally-scalar representations of quivers in Hilbert spaces and separating functions

A numeric function $ρ$: $ρ(k)=1+\frac{k-1}{k+1}, k \in N$ was considered in [1]. In its terms criterions of finite representability and tameness of marked quivers, posets with equivalence and dyadic posets can be obtained; Dynkin schemes and extended schemes also can be characterized.
In this paper authors consider the connection of function $ρ$ with locally-scalar representations [2] of extended Dynkin graphs. Then a family of functions $ρ_n$ is defined -- a generalization of function $ρ$, which plays an analogous part for more wide class of graphs. Also some properties of functions $ρ$ and $ρ_k$ are proved.

It is shown that the coset lattice of a finite group has shellable order complex if and only if the group is complemented. Furthermore, the coset lattice is shown to have a Cohen-Macaulay order complex in exactly the same conditions. The group theoretical tools used are relatively elementary, and avoid the classification of finite simple groups and of minimal finite simple groups.
On the cohomology of torus manifolds

A torus manifold is an even-dimensional manifold acted on by a half-dimensional torus with non-empty fixed point set and some additional orientation data. It may be considered as a far-reaching generalisation of toric manifolds from algebraic geometry. The orbit space of a torus manifold has a rich combinatorial structure, e.g., it is a manifold with corners provided that the action is locally standard. Here we investigate relationships between the cohomological properties of torus manifolds and the combinatorics of their orbit quotients. We show that the cohomology ring of a torus manifold is generated by two-dimensional classes if and only if the quotient is a homology polytope. In this case we retrieve the familiar picture from toric geometry: the equivariant cohomology is the face ring of the nerve simplicial complex and the ordinary cohomology is obtained by factoring out certain linear forms. In a more general situation, we show that the odd-degree cohomology of a torus manifold vanishes if and only if the orbit space is face-acyclic. Although the cohomology is no longer generated in degree two under these circumstances, the equivariant cohomology is still isomorphic to the face ring of an appropriate simplicial poset.

We show that the order dimension of the weak order on a Coxeter group of type A, B or D is equal to the rank of the Coxeter group, and give bounds on the order dimensions for the other finite types. This result arises from a unified approach which, in particular, leads to a simpler treatment of the previously known cases, types A and B. The result for weak orders follows from an upper bound on the dimension of the poset of regions of an arbitrary hyperplane arrangement. In some cases, including the weak orders, the upper bound is the chromatic number of a certain graph. For the weak orders, this graph has the positive roots as its vertex set, and the edges are related to the pairwise inner products of the roots.
h-vectors of Gorenstein* simplicial posets

As is well known, h-vectors of simple (or simplicial) convex polytopes are characterized. In fact, those h-vectors must satisfy Dehn-Sommerville equations and some other inequalities. Simple convex polytopes determine Gorenstein* simplicial posets and h-vectors are defined for simplicial posets. It is known that h-vectors of Gorenstein* simplicial posets must satisfy Dehn-Sommerville equations and that every component in the h-vectors must be non-negative. In this paper we will show that h-vectors of Gorenstein* simplicial posets must satisfy one more subtle condition conjectured by R. Stanley and complete characterization of those h-vectors. Our proof is purely algebraic but the idea of the proof stems from topology.

We introduce notions of combinatorial blowups, building sets, and nested sets for arbitrary meet-semilattices. This gives a common abstract framework for the incidence combinatorics occurring in the context of De Concini-Procesi models of subspace arrangements and resolutions of singularities in toric varieties. Our main theorem states that a sequence of combinatorial blowups, prescribed by a building set in linear extension compatible order, gives the face poset of the corresponding simplicial complex of nested sets. As applications we trace the incidence combinatorics through every step of the De Concini-Procesi model construction, and we introduce the notions of building sets and nested sets to the context of toric varieties.
There are several other instances, such as models of stratified manifolds and certain graded algebras associated with finite lattices, where our combinatorial framework has been put to work; we present an outline in the end of this paper.

Let $\be$ be a Borel subalgebra of a complex simple Lie algebra $\g$. An ideal of $\be$ is called ad-nilpotent, if it is contained in $[\be,\be]$. The generators of an ad-nilpotent ideal give rise to an antichain in the poset of positive roots, and the whole theory can be expressed in a combinatorial fashion, in terms of antichains. The aim of this paper is to present a refinement of the enumerative theory of ad-nilpotent ideals for the case in which $\g$ has roots of different length. An antichain is called short, if it consists of short roots. We obtain, for short antichains, analogues of all results known for the usual antichains.

We refine a technique used in a paper by Schur on real-rooted polynomials. This amounts to an extension of a theorem of Wagner on Hadamard products of Toeplitz matrices. We also apply our results to polynomials for which the Neggers-Stanley Conjecture is known to hold. More precisely, we settle interlacing properties for $E$-polynomials of series-parallel posets and column-strict labelled Ferrers posets.

For any finite set $\A$ of $n$ points in $\R^2$, we define a $(3n-3)$-dimensional simple polyhedron whose face poset is isomorphic to the poset of ``non-crossing marked graphs'' with vertex set $\A$, where a marked graph is defined as a geometric graph together with a subset of its vertices. The poset of non-crossing graphs on $\A$ appears as the complement of the star of a face in that polyhedron.
The polyhedron has a unique maximal bounded face, of dimension $2n_i +n -3$ where $n_i$ is the number of points of $\A$ in the interior of $\conv(\A)$. The vertices of this polytope are all the pseudo-triangulations of $\A$, and the edges are flips of two types: the traditional diagonal flips (in pseudo-triangulations) and the removal or insertion of a single edge.
As a by-product of our construction we prove that all pseudo-triangulations are infinitesimally rigid graphs.
Free hyperplane arrangements associated to labeled rooted trees
Each labeled rooted tree is associated with a hyperplane arrangement, which is free with exponents given by the depths of the vertices of this tree. The intersection lattices of these arrangements are described through posets of forests. These posets are used to define coalgebras, whose dual algebras are shown to have a simple presentation by generators and relations.

For a graph G, we construct two algebras, whose dimensions are both equal to the number of spanning trees of G. One of these algebras is the quotient of the polynomial ring modulo certain monomial ideal, while the other is the quotient of the polynomial ring modulo certain powers of linear forms. We describe the set of monomials that forms a linear basis in each of these two algebras. The basis elements correspond to G-parking functions that naturally came up in the abelian sandpile model. These ideals are instances of the general class of monotone monomial ideals and their deformations. We show that the Hilbert series of a monotone monomial ideal is always bounded by the Hilbert series of its deformation. Then we define an even more general class of monomial ideals associated with posets and construct free resolutions for these ideals. In some cases these resolutions coincide with Scarf resolutions. We prove several formulas for Hilbert series of monotone monomial ideals and investigate when they are equal to Hilbert series of deformations. In the appendix we discuss the sandpile model.
Maps between higher Bruhat orders and higher Stasheff-Tamari posets
We make explict a description in terms of convex geometry of the higher Bruhat orders B(n,d) sketched by Kapranov and Voevodsky. We give an analogous description of the higher Stasheff-Tamari poset S_1(n,d). We show that the map f sketched by Kapranov and Voevodsky from B(n,d) to S([0,n+1],d+1) coincides with the map constructed by Rambau, and is a surjection for d<=2. We construct a map analogous to f from S_1(n,d) to B(n-1,d), and show that it is always a poset embedding. We also give an explicit criterion to determine if an element of B(n-1,d) is in the image of this map.
The cd-index of the Boolean lattice
We study some properties of the {\bf cd}-index of the Boolean lattice. They are extremely similar to the properties of the {\ab}-index, or equivalently, the flag $h$-vector of the Boolean lattice and hence may be viewed as their {\bf cd}-analogues. We define a different algebra structure on the polynomial algebra $k < \cv, \dv>$ and give a derivation on this algebra. It is of significance for the Boolean lattice and forms our main tool. Using similar methods, we also prove some results for the {\bf cd}-index of the cubical lattice. We show that the Dehn-Sommerville relations for the flag $f$-vector of an Eulerian poset are equivalent to certain simple identities that exist in our algebra.
Poset Edge-Labellings and Left Modularity

It is known that a graded lattice of rank n is supersolvable if and only if it has an EL-labelling where the labels along any maximal chain are exactly the numbers 1,2,...,n without repetition. These labellings are called S_n EL-labellings, and having such a labelling is also equivalent to possessing a maximal chain of left modular elements. In the case of an ungraded lattice, there is a natural extension of S_n EL-labellings, called interpolating labellings. We show that admitting an interpolating labelling is again equivalent to possessing a maximal chain of left modular elements. Furthermore, we work in the setting of a general bounded poset as all the above results generalize to this case. We conclude by applying our results to show that the lattice of non-straddling partitions, which is not graded in general, has a maximal chain of left modular elements.
Some remarks on sign-balanced and maj-balanced posets

Let P be a poset with elements 1,2,...,n. We say that P is sign-balanced if exactly half the linear extensions of P (regarded as permutations of 1,2,...,n) are even permutations, i.e., have an even number of inversions. This concept first arose in the work of Frank Ruskey, who was interested in the efficient generation of all linear extensions of P. We survey a number of techniques for showing that posets are sign-balanced, and more generally, computing their "imbalance." There are close connections with domino tilings and, for certain posets, a "domino generalization" of Schur functions due to Carre and Leclerc. We also say that P is maj-balanced if exactly half the linear extensions of P have even major index. We discuss some similarities and some differences between sign-balanced and maj-balanced posets.

Let $\b$ be a Borel subalgebra of a simple Lie algebra $\g$ and let $\Ab$ denote the set of all Abelian ideals of $\b$. We consider $\Ab$ as poset with respect to inclusion, the zero ideal being the unique minimal element of $\Ab$. It was shown in my paper with G.Roehrle (Adv. Math. v.159 (2001)) that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the maximal Abelian ideals and the long simple roots of $\g$. But the very existence of it was demonstrated in a case-by-case fashion. Here a conceptual explanation for that empirical observation is given. The main results are: 1) there is a natural mapping $τ$ from the set of all nontrivial Abelian ideals to the set of long positive roots; 2) If $I$ is a maximal Abelian ideal, then $τ(I)$ is a long simple root. Restricting $τ$ to the set of maximal Abelian ideals yields the above-mentioned correspondence; 3) Each fibre of $τ$ is a poset in its own right, and we prove that this fibre has a unique maximal and a unique minimal element. 4) An explicit description of the minimal and the maximal ideal corresponding to a long root is given.
