Cylindric symmetric functions and positivity
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce new families of cylindric symmetric functions as subcoalgebras in the ring of symmetric functions $Λ$ (viewed as a Hopf algebra) which have non-negative structure constants. Combinatorially these cylindric symmetric functions are defined as weighted sums over cylindric reverse plane partitions or - alternatively - in terms of sets of affine permutations. We relate their combinatorial definition to an algebraic construction in terms of the principal Heisenberg subalgebra of the affine Lie algebra $\mathfrak{\widehat{sl}}_n$ and a specialised cyclotomic Hecke algebra. Using Schur-Weyl duality we show that the new cylindric symmetric functions arise as matrix elements of Lie algebra elements in the subspace of symmetric tensors of a particular level-0 module which can be identified with the small quantum cohomology ring of the $k$-fold product of projective space. The analogous construction in the subspace of alternating tensors gives the known set of cylindric Schur functions which are related to the small quantum cohomology ring of Grassmannians. We prove that cylindric Schur functions form a subcoalgebra in $Λ$ whose structure constants are the 3-point genus 0 Gromov-Witten invariants. We show that the new families of cylindric functions obtained from the subspace of symmetric tensors also share the structure constants of a symmetric Frobenius algebra, which we define in terms of tensor multiplicities of the generalised symmetric group $G(n,1,k)$.

Binary Subspace Codes in Small Ambient Spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
Codes in finite projective spaces equipped with the subspace distance have been proposed for error control in random linear network coding. Here we collect the present knowledge on lower and upper bounds for binary subspace codes for projective dimensions of at most $7$. We obtain several improvements of the bounds and perform two classifications of optimal subspace codes, which are unknown so far in the literature.

Divisors on matroids and their volumes
Published • View PublicationBIB
The classical volume polynomial in algebraic geometry measures the degrees of ample (and nef) divisors on a smooth projective variety. We introduce an analogous volume polynomial for matroids, and give a complete combinatorial formula. For a realizable matroid, we thus obtain an explicit formula for the classical volume polynomial of the associated wonderful compactification. We then introduce a new invariant called the volume of a matroid as a particular specialization of its volume polynomial, and discuss its algebro-geometric and combinatorial properties in connection to graded linear series on blow-ups of projective spaces.

Spanning Lattice Polytopes and the Uniform Position Principle
A lattice polytope $P$ is called IDP if any lattice point in its $k$th dilate is a sum of $k$ lattice points in $P$. In 1991 Stanley proved a strong inequality in Ehrhart theory for IDP lattice polytopes. We show that his conclusion holds under much milder assumptions, namely if the lattice polytope $P$ is spanning, i.e., any lattice point of the ambient lattice is an integer affine combination of lattice points in $P$. As an application, we get a generalization of Hibi's Lower Bound Theorem. Our proof relies on generalizing Bertini's theorem to the semistandard situation and Harris' Uniform Position Principle to certain curves in weighted projective space.

The Dimension of Eigenvariety of Nonnegative Tensors Associated with Spectral Radius
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a nonnegative weakly irreducible tensor, its spectral radius is an eigenvalue corresponding to a unique positive eigenvector up to a scalar called the Perron vector. But including the Perron vector, it may have more than one eigenvector corresponding to the spectral radius. The projective eigenvariety associated with the spectral radius is the set of the eigenvectors corresponding to the spectral radius considered in the complex projective space. In this paper we prove that the dimension of the above projective eigenvariety is zero, i.e. there are finite many eigenvectors associated with the spectral radius up to a scalar. For a general nonnegative tensor, we characterize the nonnegative combinatorially symmetric tensor for which the dimension of projective eigenvariety associated with spectral radius is greater than zero. Finally we apply those results to the adjacency tensors of uniform hypergraphs.

Strongly Cospectral Vertices
Two vertices $a$ and $b$ in a graph $X$ are cospectral if the vertex-deleted subgraphs $X\setminus a$ and $X\setminus b$ have the same characteristic polynomial. In this paper we investigate a strengthening of this relation on vertices, that arises in investigations of continuous quantum walks. Suppose the vectors $e_a$ for $a$ in $V(X)$ are the standard basis for $\mathbb{R}^{V(X)}$. We say that $a$ and $b$ are strongly cospectral if, for each eigenspace $U$ of $A(X)$, the orthogonal projections of $e_a$ and $e_b$ are either equal or differ only in sign. We develop the basic theory of this concept and provide constructions of graphs with pairs of strongly cospectral vertices. Given a continuous quantum walk on on a graph, each vertex determines a curve in complex projective space. We derive results that show tht the closer these curves are, the more "similar" the corresponding vertices are.

The Projective Planarity Question for Matroids of $3$-Nets and Biased Graphs
Published in Australasian J. Combinatorics, 76(2) (2020), 299-338 • Search Publication
A biased graph is a graph with a class of selected circles ("cycles", "circuits"), called "balanced", such that no theta subgraph contains exactly two balanced circles. A biased graph has two natural matroids, the frame matroid and the lift matroid. A classical question in matroid theory is whether a matroid can be embedded in a projective geometry. There is no known general answer, but for matroids of biased graphs it is possible to give algebraic criteria. Zaslavsky has previously given such criteria for embeddability of biased-graphic matroids in Desarguesian projective spaces; in this paper we establish criteria for the remaining case, that is, embeddability in an arbitrary projective plane that is not necessarily Desarguesian. The criteria depend on the embeddability of a quasigroup associated to the graph into the additive or multiplicative loop of a ternary coordinate ring for the plane. A 3-node biased graph is equivalent to an abstract partial 3-net; thus, we have a new algebraic criterion for an abstract 3-net to be realized in a non-Desarguesian projective plane. We work in terms of a special kind of 3-node biased graph called a biased expansion of a triangle. Our results apply to all finite 3-node biased graphs because, as we prove, every such biased graph is a subgraph of a finite biased expansion of a triangle. A biased expansion of a triangle, in turn, is equivalent to an isostrophe class of quasigroups, which is equivalent to a $3$-net. Much is not known about embedding a quasigroup into a ternary ring, so we do not say our criteria are definitive. For instance, it is not even known whether there is a finite quasigroup that cannot be embedded in any finite ternary ring. If there is, then there is a finite rank-3 matroid (of the corresponding biased expansion) that cannot be embedded in any finite projective plane---a presently unsolved problem.

Eigenvariety of Nonnegative Symmetric Weakly Irreducible Tensors Associated with Spectral Radius and Its Application to Hypergraphs
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications, 564(2019), 72-94 • View PublicationBIB
For a nonnegative symmetric weakly irreducible tensor, its spectral radius is an eigenvalue corresponding to a unique positive eigenvector up to a scalar called the Perron vector. But including the Perron vector, there may have more than one eigenvector corresponding to the spectral radius. The projective eigenvariety associated with the spectral radius is the set of the eigenvectors corresponding to the spectral radius considered in the complex projective space. In this paper we proved that such projective eigenvariety admits a module structure, which is determined by the support of the tensor and can be characterized explicitly by solving the Smith normal form of the incidence matrix of the tensor. We introduced two parameters: the stabilizing index and the stabilizing dimension of the tensor, where the former is exactly the cardinality of the projective eigenvariety and the latter is the composition length of the projective eigenvariety as a module. We give some upper bounds for the two parameters, and characterize the case that there is only one eigenvector of the tensor corresponding to the spectral radius, i.e. the Perron vector. By applying the above results to the adjacency tensor of a connected uniform hypergraph, we give some upper bounds for the two parameters in terms of the structural parameters of the hypergraph such as path cover number, matching number and the maximum length of paths.

The symmetric representation of lines in $\text{PG}(\mathbb{F}^3 \otimes \mathbb{F}^3)$
Let $\mathbb{F}$ be a finite field, an algebraically closed field, or the field of real numbers. Consider the vector space $V=\mathbb{F}^3 \otimes \mathbb{F}^3$ of $3 \times 3$ matrices over $\mathbb{F}$, and let $G \leq \text{PGL}(V)$ be the setwise stabiliser of the corresponding Segre variety $S_{3,3}(\mathbb{F})$ in the projective space $\text{PG}(V)$. The $G$-orbits of lines in $\text{PG}(V)$ were determined by the first author and Sheekey as part of their classification of tensors in $\mathbb{F}^2 \otimes V$ in the article "Canonical forms of $2 \times 3 \times 3$ tensors over the real field, algebraically closed fields, and finite fields", Linear Algebra Appl. 476 (2015) 133-147. Here we consider the related problem of classifying those line orbits that may be represented by {\em symmetric} matrices, or equivalently, of classifying the line orbits in the $\mathbb{F}$-span of the Veronese variety $\mathcal{V}_3(\mathbb{F}) \subset S_{3,3}(\mathbb{F})$ under the natural action of $K=\text{PGL}(3,\mathbb{F})$. Interestingly, several of the $G$-orbits that have symmetric representatives split under the action of $K$, and in many cases this splitting depends on the characteristic of $\mathbb{F}$. The corresponding orbit sizes and stabiliser subgroups of $K$ are also determined in the case where $\mathbb{F}$ is a finite field, and connections are drawn with old work of Jordan, Dickson and Campbell on the classification of pencils of conics in $\text{PG}(2,\mathbb{F})$, or equivalently, of pairs of ternary quadratic forms over $\mathbb{F}$.

Mustafin varieties, moduli spaces and tropical geometry
Published • View PublicationBIB
Mustafin varieties are flat degenerations of projective spaces, induced by a choice of an $n-$tuple of lattices in a vector space over a non-archimedean field. They were introduced by Mustafin in the 70s in order to generalise Mumford's groundbreaking work on the unformisation of curves to higher dimension. These varieties have a rich combinatorial structure as can be seen in pioneering work of Cartwright, Häbich, Sturmfels and Werner. In this paper, we introduce a new approach to Mustafin varieties in terms of images of rational maps, which were studied by Li. Applying tropical intersection theory and tropical convex hull computations, we use this method to give a new combinatorial description of the irreducible components of the special fibers of Mustafin varieties. This enables connections to various topics. In particular, we see that any multiview variety appears as an irreducible component of the special fiber of some Mustafin variety. Furthermore, we use an interpretation of Mustafin varieties as a moduli functor introduced by Faltings to relate them to certain moduli functors, called linked Grassmannians. These objects are featured in limit linear series theory. The focal point of study regarding linked Grassmannians are so-called \textit{simple points}. As a direct consequence of the new combinatorial description of Mustafin varieties, we prove that the simple points of linked Grassmannians are dense in every fiber. Finally, we use the connection to linked Grassmannians, to relate the special fibers of Mustafin varieties to certain local models of unitary Shimura varieties.

Packings in real projective spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper applies techniques from algebraic and differential geometry to determine how to best pack points in real projective spaces. We present a computer-assisted proof of the optimality of a particular 6-packing in $\mathbb{R}\mathbf{P}^3$, we introduce a linear-time constant-factor approximation algorithm for packing in the so-called Gerzon range, and we provide local optimality certificates for two infinite families of packings. Finally, we present perfected versions of various putatively optimal packings from Sloane's online database, along with a handful of infinite families they suggest, and we prove that these packings enjoy a certain weak notion of optimality.

A splitter theorem for 3-connected 2-polymatroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
Seymour's Splitter Theorem is a basic inductive tool for dealing with $3$-connected matroids. This paper proves a generalization of that theorem for the class of $2$-polymatroids. Such structures include matroids, and they model both sets of points and lines in a projective space and sets of edges in a graph. A series compression in such a structure is an analogue of contracting an edge of a graph that is in a series pair. A $2$-polymatroid $N$ is an s-minor of a $2$-polymatroid $M$ if $N$ can be obtained from $M$ by a sequence of contractions, series compressions, and dual-contractions, where the last are modified deletions. The main result proves that if $M$ and $N$ are $3$-connected $2$-polymatroids such that $N$ is an s-minor of $M$, then $M$ has a $3$-connected s-minor $M'$ that has an s-minor isomorphic to $N$ and has $|E(M)| - 1$ elements unless $M$ is a whirl or the cycle matroid of a wheel. In the exceptional case, such an $M'$ can be found with $|E(M)| - 2$ elements.

Quasi-homogeneity of the moduli space of stable maps to homogeneous spaces
Let $G$ be a connected, simply connected, simple, complex, linear algebraic group. Let $P$ be an arbitrary parabolic subgroup of $G$. Let $X=G/P$ be the $G$-homogeneous projective space attached to this situation. Let $d\in H_2(X)$ be a degree. Let $\overline{M}_{0,3}(X,d)$ be the (coarse) moduli space of three pointed genus zero stable maps to $X$ of degree $d$. We prove under reasonable assumptions on $d$ that $\overline{M}_{0,3}(X,d)$ is quasi-homogeneous under the action of $G$. The essential assumption on $d$ is that $d$ is a minimal degree, i.e. that $d$ is a degree which is minimal with the property that $q^d$ occurs with non-zero coefficient in the quantum product $σ_u\starσ_v$ of two Schubert cycles $σ_u$ and $σ_v$, where $\star$ denotes the product in the (small) quantum cohomology ring $QH^*(X)$ attached to $X$. We prove our main result on quasi-homogeneity by constructing an explicit morphism which has a dense open $G$-orbit in $\overline{M}_{0,3}(X,d)$. To carry out the construction of this morphism, we develop a combinatorial theory of generalized cascades of orthogonal roots which is interesting in its own right.

A characterization of Hermitian varieties as codewords
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is known that the Hermitian varieties are codewords in the code defined by the points and hyperplanes of the projective spaces $PG(r,q^2)$. In finite geometry, also quasi-Hermitian varieties are defined. These are sets of points of $PG(r,q^2)$ of the same size as a non-singular Hermitian variety of $PG(r,q^2)$, having the same intersection sizes with the hyperplanes of $PG(r,q^2)$. In the planar case, this reduces to the definition of a unital. A famous result of Blokhuis, Brouwer, and Wilbrink states that every unital in the code of the points and lines of $PG(2,q^2)$ is a Hermitian curve. We prove a similar result for the quasi-Hermitian varieties in $PG(3,q^2)$, $q=p^{h}$, as well as in $PG(r,q^2)$, $q=p$ prime, or $q=p^2$, $p$ prime, and $r\geq 4$.
Upper bounds on the smallest size of a complete cap in $\mathrm{PG}(N,q)$, $N\ge3$, under a certain probabilistic conjecture
In the projective space $\mathrm{PG}(N,q)$ over the Galois field of order $q$, $N\ge3$, an iterative step-by-step construction of complete caps by adding a new point on every step is considered. It is proved that uncovered points are evenly placed on the space. A natural conjecture on an estimate of the number of new covered points on every step is done. For a part of the iterative process, this estimate is proved rigorously. Under the conjecture mentioned, new upper bounds on the smallest size $t_{2}(N,q)$ of a complete cap in $\mathrm{PG}(N,q)$ are obtained, in particular, \begin{align*} t_{2}(N,q)<\frac{\sqrt{q^{N+1}}}{q-1}\left(\sqrt{(N+1)\ln q}+1\right)+2\thicksim q^\frac{N-1}{2}\sqrt{(N+1)\ln q},\quad N\ge3. \end{align*} A connection with the Birthday problem is noted. The effectiveness of the new bounds is illustrated by comparison with sizes of complete caps obtained by computer in wide regions of $q$.

Computing minimal generating systems for some special toric ideals
Let $X_{P}$ be the projective toric surface associated to a lattice polytope $P$. If the number of lattice points lying on the boundary of $P$ is at least $4$, it is known that $X_{P}$ is embeddable into a suitable projective space as zero set of finitely many quadrics. In this case, the determination of a minimal generating system of the toric ideal defining $X_{P}$ is reduced to a simple Gaussian elimination.

In the present note we study certain arrangements of codimension $2$ flats in projective spaces, we call them "Fermat arrangements". We describe algebraic properties of their defining ideals. In particular, we show that they provide counterexamples to an expected containment relation between ordinary and symbolic powers of homogeneous ideals.
