We establish a combinatorial connection between the real geometry and the $K$-theory of complex Schubert curves $S(λ_\bullet)$, which are one-dimensional Schubert problems defined with respect to flags osculating the rational normal curve. In a previous paper, the second author showed that the real geometry of these curves is described by the orbits of a map $ω$ on skew tableaux, defined as the commutator of jeu de taquin rectification and promotion. In particular, the real locus of the Schubert curve is naturally a covering space of $\mathbb{RP}^1$, with $ω$ as the monodromy operator.
We provide a local algorithm for computing $ω$ without rectifying the skew tableau, and show that certain steps in our algorithm are in bijective correspondence with Pechenik and Yong's genomic tableaux, which enumerate the $K$-theoretic Littlewood-Richardson coefficient associated to the Schubert curve. We then give purely combinatorial proofs of several numerical results involving the $K$-theory and real geometry of $S(λ_\bullet)$.

Using this bijection, we give purely combinatorial proofs of several numerical results involving the $K$-theory and real geometry of $S(λ_\bullet)$.
Resonance in orbits of plane partitions and increasing tableaux

We introduce a new concept of resonance on discrete dynamical systems. This concept formalizes the observation that, in various combinatorially-natural cyclic group actions, orbit cardinalities are all multiples of divisors of a fundamental frequency.
Our main result is an equivariant bijection between plane partitions in a box (or order ideals in the product of three chains) under rowmotion and increasing tableaux under $K$-promotion. Both of these actions were observed to have orbit sizes that were small multiples of divisors of an expected orbit size, and we show this is an instance of resonance, as $K$-promotion cyclically rotates the set of labels appearing in the increasing tableaux. We extract a number of corollaries from this equivariant bijection, including a strengthening of a theorem of [P. Cameron--D. Fon-der-Flaass '95] and several new results on the order of $K$-promotion. Along the way, we adapt the proof of the conjugacy of promotion and rowmotion from [J. Striker--N. Williams '12] to give a generalization in the setting of $n$-dimensional lattice projections. Finally we discuss known and conjectured examples of resonance relating to alternating sign matrices and fully-packed loop configurations.

We prove that the expected number of braid moves in the commutation class of the reduced word $(s_1 s_2 \cdots s_{n-1})(s_1 s_2 \cdots s_{n-2}) \cdots (s_1 s_2)(s_1)$ for the long element in the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ is one. This is a variant of a similar result by V. Reiner, who proved that the expected number of braid moves in a random reduced word for the long element is one. The proof is bijective and uses X. Viennot's theory of heaps and variants of the promotion operator. In addition, we provide a refinement of this result on orbits under the action of even and odd promotion operators. This gives an example of a homomesy for a nonabelian (dihedral) group that is not induced by an abelian subgroup. Our techniques extend to more general posets and to other statistics.

We consider Schubert problems with respect to flags osculating the rational normal curve. These problems are of special interest when the osculation points are all real -- in this case, for zero-dimensional Schubert problems, the solutions are "as real as possible". Recent work by Speyer has extended the theory to the moduli space $\overline{M_{0,r}}$, allowing the points to collide. These give rise to smooth covers of $\overline{M_{0,r}}(\mathbb{R})$, with structure and monodromy described by Young tableaux and jeu de taquin.
In this paper, we give analogous results on one-dimensional Schubert problems over $\overline{M_{0,r}}$. Their (real) geometry turns out to be described by orbits of Schützenberger promotion and a related operation involving tableau evacuation. Over $M_{0,r}$, our results show that the real points of the solution curves are smooth.
We also find a new identity involving `first-order' K-theoretic Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, for which there does not appear to be a known combinatorial proof.

Given a permutation $τ$ defined on a set of combinatorial objects $S$, together with some statistic $f:S\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$, we say that the triple $\langle S, τ,f \rangle$ exhibits homomesy if $f$ has the same average along all orbits of $τ$ in $S$. This phenomenon was noticed by Panyushev (2007) and later studied, named and extended by Propp and Roby (2013). After Propp and Roby's paper, homomesy has received a lot of attention and a number of mathematicians are intrigued by it. While seeming ubiquitous, homomesy is often surprisingly non-trivial to prove. Propp and Roby studied homomesy in the set of ideals in the product of two chains, with two well known permutations, rowmotion and promotion, the statistic being the size of the ideal. In this paper we extend their results to generalized rowmotion and promotion together with a wider class of statistics in product of two chains .
Moreover, we derive some homomesy results in posets of type A and B. We believe that the framework that we set up can be used to prove similar results in wider classes of posets.

We give a counting formula for the set of rectangular increasing tableaux in terms of generalized Narayana numbers. We define small $m$-Schröder paths and give a bijection between the set of increasing rectangular tableaux and small $m$-Schröder paths, generalizing a result of Pechenik [3]. Using $K$-jeu de taquin promotion, which was defined by Thomas and Yong [10], we give a cyclic sieving phenomenon for the set of increasing hook tableaux.

A combinatorial expression for the coefficient of the Schur function $s_λ$ in the expansion of the plethysm $p_{n/d}^d \circ s_μ$ is given for all $d$ dividing $n$ for the cases in which $n=2$ or $λ$ is rectangular. In these cases, the coefficient $\langle p_{n/d}^d \circ s_μ, s_λ \rangle$ is shown to count, up to sign, the number of fixed points of an $\langle s_μ^n, s_λ \rangle$-element set under the $d^{\text{th}}$ power of an order-$n$ cyclic action. If $n=2$, the action is the Schützenberger involution on semistandard Young tableaux (also known as evacuation), and, if $λ$ is rectangular, the action is a certain power of Schützenberger and Shimozono's jeu-de-taquin promotion.
This work extends results of Stembridge and Rhoades linking fixed points of the Schützenberger actions to ribbon tableaux enumeration. The conclusion for the case $n=2$ is equivalent to the domino tableaux rule of Carré and Leclerc for discriminating between the symmetric and antisymmetric parts of the square of a Schur function.

Piecewise-linear and birational toggling

We define piecewise-linear and birational analogues of the toggle-involutions on order ideals of posets studied by Striker and Williams and use them to define corresponding analogues of rowmotion and promotion that share many of the properties of combinatorial rowmotion and promotion. Piecewise-linear rowmotion (like birational rowmotion) admits an alternative definition related to Stanley's transfer map for the order polytope; piecewise-linear promotion relates to Schützenberger promotion for semistandard Young tableaux. The three settings for these dynamical systems (combinatorial, piecewise-linear, and birational) are intimately related: the piecewise-linear operations arise as tropicalizations of the birational operations, and the combinatorial operations arise as restrictions of the piecewise-linear operations to the vertex-set of the order polytope. In the case where the poset is of the form $[a] \times [b]$, we exploit a reciprocal symmetry property recently proved by Grinberg and Roby to show that birational rowmotion (and consequently piecewise-linear rowmotion) is of order $a+b$. This yields a new proof of a theorem of Cameron and Fon-der-Flaass. Our proofs make use of the correspondence between rowmotion and promotion orbits discovered by Striker and Williams, which we make more concrete. We also prove some homomesy results, showing that for certain functions $f$, the average value of $f$ over each rowmotion/promotion orbit is independent of the orbit chosen.
Maximal increasing sequences in fillings of almost-moon polyominoes
It was proved by Rubey that the number of fillings with zeros and ones of a given moon polyomino that do not contain a northeast chain of size $k$ depends only on the set of columns of the polyomino, but not the shape of the polyomino. Rubey's proof is an adaption of jeu de taquin and promotion for arbitrary fillings of moon polyominoes. In this paper we present a bijective proof for this result by considering fillings of almost-moon polyominoes, which are moon polyominoes after removing one of the rows. Explicitly, we construct a bijection which preserves the size of the largest northeast chains of the fillings when two adjacent rows of the polyomino are exchanged. This bijection also preserves the column sum of the fillings. We also present a bijection that preserves the size of the largest northeast chains, the row sum and the column sum if every row of the fillings has at most one 1.
A marvellous embedding of the Lagrangian Grassmannian

We give a embedding of the Lagrangian Grassmannian LG(n) inside an ordinary Grassmannian that is well-behaved with respect to the Wronski map. As a consequence, we obtain an analogue of the Mukhin-Tarasov-Varchenko theorem for LG(n). The restriction of the Wronski map to LG(n) has degree equal to the number of shifted or unshifted tableaux of staircase shape. For special fibres one can define bijections, which, in turn, gives a bijection between these two classes of tableaux. The properties of these bijections lead a geometric proof of a branching rule for the cohomological map H*(Gr(n,2n)) x H*(LG(n)) -> H*(LG(n)), induced by the diagonal inclusion LG(n) -> LG(n) x Gr(n,2n). We also discuss applications to the orbit structure of jeu de taquin promotion on staircase tableaux.

We study a birational map associated to any finite poset P. This map is a far-reaching generalization (found by Einstein and Propp) of classical rowmotion, which is a certain permutation of the set of order ideals of P. Classical rowmotion has been studied by various authors (Fon-der-Flaass, Cameron, Brouwer, Schrijver, Striker, Williams and many more) under different guises (Striker-Williams promotion and Panyushev complementation are two examples of maps equivalent to it). In contrast, birational rowmotion is new and has yet to reveal several of its mysteries. In this paper, we prove that birational rowmotion has order p+q on the (p, q)-rectangle poset (i.e., on the product of a p-element chain with a q-element chain); we furthermore compute its orders on some triangle-shaped posets and on a class of posets which we call "skeletal" (this class includes all graded forests). In all cases mentioned, birational rowmotion turns out to have a finite (and explicitly computable) order, a property it does not exhibit for general finite posets (unlike classical rowmotion, which is a permutation of a finite set). Our proof in the case of the rectangle poset uses an idea introduced by Volkov (arXiv:hep-th/0606094) to prove the AA case of the Zamolodchikov periodicity conjecture; in fact, the finite order of birational rowmotion on many posets can be considered an analogue to Zamolodchikov periodicity. We comment on suspected, but so far enigmatic, connections to the theory of root posets. We also make a digression to study classical rowmotion on skeletal posets, since this case has seemingly been overlooked so far.

We develop a general theory of Markov chains realizable as random walks on $\mathscr R$-trivial monoids. It provides explicit and simple formulas for the eigenvalues of the transition matrix, for multiplicities of the eigenvalues via Möbius inversion along a lattice, a condition for diagonalizability of the transition matrix and some techniques for bounding the mixing time. In addition, we discuss several examples, such as Toom-Tsetlin models, an exchange walk for finite Coxeter groups, as well as examples previously studied by the authors, such as nonabelian sandpile models and the promotion Markov chain on posets. Many of these examples can be viewed as random walks on quotients of free tree monoids, a new class of monoids whose combinatorics we develop.
Combinatorial, piecewise-linear, and birational homomesy for products of two chains

This article illustrates the dynamical concept of $homomesy$ in three kinds of dynamical systems -- combinatorial, piecewise-linear, and birational -- and shows the relationship between these three settings. In particular, we show how the rowmotion and promotion operations of Striker and Williams can be lifted to (continuous) piecewise-linear operations on the order polytope of Stanley, and then lifted to birational operations on the positive orthant in $\mathbb{R}^{|P|}$ and indeed to a dense subset of $\mathbb{C}^{|P|}$. When the poset $P$ is a product of a chain of length $a$ and a chain of length $b$, these lifted operations have order $a+b$, and exhibit the homomesy phenomenon: the time-averages of various quantities are the same in all orbits. One important tool is a concrete realization of the conjugacy between rowmotion and promotion found by Striker and Williams; this $recombination$ $map$ allows us to use homomesy for promotion to deduce homomesy for rowmotion.
NOTE: An earlier draft showed that Stanley's transfer map between the order polytope and the chain polytope arises as the tropicalization of an analogous map in the bilinear realm; in 2020 we removed this material for the sake of brevity, especially after Joseph and Roby generalized our proof to the noncommutative realm (see arXiv:1909.09658v3). Readers who nonetheless wish to see our proof can find the September 2018 draft of this preprint through the arXiv.
Homomesy in products of two chains

Many invertible actions $τ$ on a set ${\mathcal{S}}$ of combinatorial objects, along with a natural statistic $f$ on ${\mathcal{S}}$, exhibit the following property which we dub \textbf{homomesy}: the average of $f$ over each $τ$-orbit in ${\mathcal{S}}$ is the same as the average of $f$ over the whole set ${\mathcal{S}}$. This phenomenon was first noticed by Panyushev in 2007 in the context of the rowmotion action on the set of antichains of a root poset; Armstrong, Stump, and Thomas proved Panyushev's conjecture in 2011. We describe a theoretical framework for results of this kind that applies more broadly, giving examples in a variety of contexts. These include linear actions on vector spaces, sandpile dynamics, Suter's action on certain subposets of Young's Lattice, Lyness 5-cycles, promotion of rectangular semi-standard Young tableaux, and the rowmotion and promotion actions on certain posets. We give a detailed description of the latter situation for products of two chains.
Proofs and generalizations of a homomesy conjecture of Propp and Roby

Let $G$ be a group acting on a set $X$ of combinatorial objects, with finite orbits, and consider a statistic $ξ: X \to \mathbb{C}$. Propp and Roby defined the triple $(X, G, ξ)$ to be \emph{homomesic} if for any orbits $\mathcal{O}_1, \mathcal{O}_2$, the average value of the statistic $ξ$ is the same, that is \[\frac{1}{{|\mathcal{O}_1|}}\sum_{x \in \mathcal{O}_1} ξ(x) = \frac{1}{|\mathcal{O}_2|}\sum_{y \in \mathcal{O}_2} ξ(y).\]
In 2013 Propp and Roby conjectured the following instance of homomesy. Let $\mathrm{SSYT}_k(m \times n)$ denote the set of semistandard Young tableaux of shape $m \times n$ with entries bounded by $k$. Let $S$ be any set of boxes in the $m \times n$ rectangle fixed under $180^\circ$ rotation. For $T \in \mathrm{SSYT}_k(m \times n)$, define $σ_S(T)$ to be the sum of the entries of $T$ in the boxes of $S$. Let $\langle \mathcal{P} \rangle$ be a cyclic group of order $k$ where $\mathcal{P}$ acts on $\mathrm{SSYT}_k(m \times n)$ by promotion. Then $(\mathrm{SSYT}_k(m \times n), \langle \mathcal{P} \rangle, σ_S)$ is homomesic.
We prove this conjecture, as well as a generalization to cominuscule posets. We also discuss analogous questions for tableaux with strictly increasing rows and columns under the K-promotion of Thomas and Yong, and prove limited results in that direction.

We consider generalizations of Schuetzenberger's promotion operator on the set L of linear extensions of a finite poset. This gives rise to a strongly connected graph on L. In earlier work (arXiv:1205.7074), we studied promotion-based Markov chains on these linear extensions which generalizes results on the Tsetlin library. We used the theory of R-trivial monoids in an essential way to obtain explicitly the eigenvalues of the transition matrix in general when the poset is a rooted forest. We first survey these results and then present explicit bounds on the mixing time and conjecture eigenvalue formulas for more general posets. We also present a generalization of promotion to arbitrary subsets of the symmetric group.

On the polytope defined in Feigin, Fourier, and Littelmann (2011), associated to any rectangle highest weight, we define a structure of an type $A_n$-crystal. We show, by using the Stembridge axioms, that this crystal is isomorphic to the one obtained from Kashiwara's crystal bases theory. Further we define on this polytope a bijective map and show that this map satisfies the properties of a weak promotion operator. This implies in particular that we provide an explicit realization of Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals for the affine type $A^{(1)}_n$ via polytopes.

In this paper we construct a new family of representations for the quantum toroidal algebras of type $A_n$, which are $\ell$-extremal in the sense of Hernandez [24]. We construct extremal loop weight modules associated to level 0 fundamental weights $\varpi_\ell$ when $n=2r+1$ is odd and $\ell=1, r+1$ or $n$. To do it, we relate monomial realizations of level 0 extremal fundamental weight crystals with integrable representations of $\mathcal{U}_q(sl_{n+1}^{tor})$, and we introduce promotion operators for the level 0 extremal fundamental weight crystals. By specializing the quantum parameter, we get finite-dimensional modules of quantum toroidal algebras at roots of unity. In general, we give a conjectural process to construct extremal loop weight modules from monomial realizations of crystals.
