The algebraic geometry of Kazhdan-Lusztig-Stanley polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Kazhdan-Lusztig-Stanley polynomials are a combinatorial generalization of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of for Coxeter groups that include g-polynomials of polytopes and Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of matroids. In the cases of Weyl groups, rational polytopes, and realizable matroids, one can count points over finite fields on flag varieties, toric varieties, or reciprocal planes to obtain cohomological interpretations of these polynomials. We survey these results and unite them under a single geometric framework.

Newton-Okounkov bodies, cluster duality, and mirror symmetry for Grassmannians
Published in Duke Math. J. 168, no. 18 (2019), 3437-3527 • View PublicationBIB
We use cluster structures and mirror symmetry to explicitly describe a natural class of Newton-Okounkov bodies for Grassmannians. We consider the Grassmannian $X=Gr_{n-k}(\mathbb C^n)$, as well as the mirror dual Landau-Ginzburg model $(\check{X}^\circ, W_q:\check{X}^\circ \to \mathbb C)$, where $\check{X}^\circ$ is the complement of a particular anti-canonical divisor in a Langlands dual Grassmannian $\check{X} = Gr_k((\mathbb C^n)^*)$, and the superpotential W_q has a simple expression in terms of Plücker coordinates. Grassmannians simultaneously have the structure of an $\mathcal{A}$-cluster variety and an $\mathcal{X}$-cluster variety. Given a cluster seed G, we consider two associated coordinate systems: a $\mathcal X$-cluster chart $Φ_G:(\mathbb C^*)^{k(n-k)}\to X^{\circ}$ and a $\mathcal A$-cluster chart $Φ_G^{\vee}:(\mathbb C^*)^{k(n-k)}\to \check{X}^\circ$. To each $\mathcal X$-cluster chart $Φ_G$ and ample `boundary divisor' $D$ in $X\setminus X^{\circ}$, we associate a Newton-Okounkov body $Δ_G(D)$ in $\mathbb R^{k(n-k)}$, which is defined as the convex hull of rational points. On the other hand using the $\mathcal A$-cluster chart $Φ_G^{\vee}$ on the mirror side, we obtain a set of rational polytopes, described by inequalities, by writing the superpotential $W_q$ in the $\mathcal A$-cluster coordinates, and then "tropicalising". Our main result is that the Newton-Okounkov bodies $Δ_G(D)$ and the polytopes obtained by tropicalisation coincide. As an application, we construct degenerations of the Grassmannian to toric varieties corresponding to these Newton-Okounkov bodies. Additionally, when $G$ corresponds to a plabic graph, we give a formula for the lattice points of the Newton-Okounkov bodies, which has an interpretation in terms of quantum Schubert calculus.

Cluster Algebras, Invariant Theory, and Kronecker Coefficients II
Published in Adv. Math. 341 (2019), 536-582 • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the semi-invariant ring of the standard representation space of the $l$-flagged $m$-arrow Kronecker quiver is an upper cluster algebra for any $l,m\in \mathbb{N}$. The quiver and cluster are explicitly given. We prove that the quiver with its rigid potential is a polyhedral cluster model. As a consequence, to compute each Kronecker coefficient $g_{μ,ν}^λ$ with $λ$ at most $m$ parts, we only need to count lattice points in at most $m!$ fibre (rational) polytopes inside the ${\rm g}$-vector cone, which is explicitly given.

Combinatorial mixed valuations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Combinatorial mixed valuations associated to translation-invariant valuations on polytopes are introduced. In contrast to the construction of mixed valuations via polarization, combinatorial mixed valuations reflect and often inherit properties of inhomogeneous valuations. In particular, it is shown that under mild assumptions combinatorial mixed valuations are monotone and hence nonnegative. For combinatorially positive valuations, this has strong computational implications. Applied to the discrete volume, the results generalize and strengthen work of Bihan (2015) on discrete mixed volumes. For rational polytopes, it is proved that combinatorial mixed monotonicity is equivalent to monotonicity. Stronger even, a conjecture is substantiated that combinatorial mixed monotonicity implies the homogeneous monotonicity in the sense of Bernig--Fu (2011).

Ehrhart series of fractional stable set polytopes of finite graphs
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 22 (2018), 563-573 • View PublicationBIB
The fractional stable set polytope ${\rm FRAC}(G)$ of a simple graph $G$ with $d$ vertices is a rational polytope that is the set of nonnegative vectors $(x_1,\ldots,x_d)$ satisfying $x_i+x_j\le 1$ for every edge $(i,j)$ of $G$. In this paper we show that (i) The $δ$-vector of a lattice polytope $2 {\rm FRAC}(G)$ is alternatingly increasing; (ii) The Ehrhart ring of ${\rm FRAC}(G)$ is Gorenstein; (iii) The coefficients of the numerator of the Ehrhart series of ${\rm FRAC}(G)$ are symmetric, unimodal and computed by the $δ$-vector of $2 {\rm FRAC}(G)$.

Fourier transforms of polytopes, solid angle sums, and discrete volume
Given a real closed polytope $P$, we first describe the Fourier transform of its indicator function by using iterations of Stokes' theorem. We then use the ensuing Fourier transform formulations, together with the Poisson summation formula, to give a new algorithm to count fractionally-weighted lattice points inside the one-parameter family of all real dilates of $P$. The combinatorics of the face poset of $P$ plays a central role in the description of the Fourier transform of $P$. We also obtain a closed form for the codimension-1 coefficient that appears in an expansion of this sum in powers of the real dilation parameter $t$. This closed form generalizes some known results about the Macdonald solid-angle polynomial, which is the analogous expression traditionally obtained by requiring that $t$ assumes only integer values. Although most of the present methodology applies to all real polytopes, a particularly nice application is to the study of all real dilates of integer (and rational) polytopes.

Macdonald's solid-angle sum for real dilations of rational polygons
The solid-angle sum $A_{\mathcal{P}} (t)$ of a rational polytope ${\mathcal{P}} \subset \mathbb{R}^d$, with $t \in \mathbb{Z}$ was first investigated by I.G. Macdonald. Using our Fourier-analytic methods, we are able to establish an explicit formula for $A_{\mathcal{P}} (t)$, for any real dilation $t$ and any rational polygon ${\mathcal{P}} \subset \mathbb{R}^2$. Our formulation sheds additional light on previous results, for lattice-point enumerating functions of triangles, which are usually confined to the case of integer dilations. Our approach differs from that of Hardy and Littlewood in 1992, but offers an alternate point of view for enumerating weighted lattice points in real dilations of real triangles.

Linear recurrence relations in $Q$-systems via lattice points in polyhedra
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the sequence of the characters of the Kirillov-Reshetikhin (KR) modules $W_{m}^{(a)}, m\in \mathbb{Z}_{m\geq 0}$ associated to a node $a$ of the Dynkin diagram of a complex simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ satisfies a linear recurrence relation except for some cases in types $E_7$ and $E_8$. To this end we use the $Q$-system and the existing lattice point summation formula for the decomposition of KR modules, known as domino removal rules when $\mathfrak{g}$ is of classical type. As an application, we show how to reduce some unproven lattice point summation formulas in exceptional types to finite problems in linear algebra and also give a new proof of them in type $G_2$, which is the only completely proven case when KR modules have an irreducible summand with multiplicity greater than 1. We also apply the recurrence to prove that the function $\dim W_{m}^{(a)}$ is a quasipolynomial in $m$ and establish its properties. We conjecture that there exists a rational polytope such that its Ehrhart quasipolynomial in $m$ is $\dim W_{m}^{(a)}$ and the lattice points of its $m$-th dilate carry the same crystal structure as the crystal associated with $W_{m}^{(a)}$.

Unimodality Problems in Ehrhart Theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
Ehrhart theory is the study of sequences recording the number of integer points in non-negative integral dilates of rational polytopes. For a given lattice polytope, this sequence is encoded in a finite vector called the Ehrhart $h^*$-vector. Ehrhart $h^*$-vectors have connections to many areas of mathematics, including commutative algebra and enumerative combinatorics. In this survey we discuss what is known about unimodality for Ehrhart $h^*$-vectors and highlight open questions and problems.

Cluster Algebras, Invariant Theory, and Kronecker Coefficients I
Published • View PublicationBIB
We relate the $m$-truncated Kronecker products of symmetric functions to the semi-invariant rings of a family of quiver representations. We find cluster algebra structures for these semi-invariant rings when $m=2$. Each {\sf g}-vector cone ${\sf G}_{\Diamond_l}$ of these cluster algebras controls the $2$-truncated Kronecker products for all symmetric functions of degree no greater than $l$. As a consequence, each relevant Kronecker coefficient is the difference of the number of the lattice points inside two rational polytopes. We also give explicit description of all ${\sf G}_{\Diamond_l}$'s. As an application, we compute some invariant rings.
Codes for DNA Sequence Profiles

We consider the problem of storing and retrieving information from synthetic DNA media. The mathematical basis of the problem is the construction and design of sequences that may be discriminated based on their collection of substrings observed through a noisy channel. This problem of reconstructing sequences from traces was first investigated in the noiseless setting under the name of "Markov type" analysis. Here, we explain the connection between the reconstruction problem and the problem of DNA synthesis and sequencing, and introduce the notion of a DNA storage channel. We analyze the number of sequence equivalence classes under the channel mapping and propose new asymmetric coding techniques to combat the effects of synthesis and sequencing noise. In our analysis, we make use of restricted de Bruijn graphs and Ehrhart theory for rational polytopes.
Three Ehrhart Quasi-polynomials

Let $P(b)\subset R^d$ be a semi-rational parametric polytope, where $b=(b_j)\in R^N$ is a real multi-parameter. We study intermediate sums of polynomial functions $h(x)$ on $P(b)$, $$ S^L (P(b),h)=\sum_{y}\int_{P(b)\cap (y+L)} h(x) \mathrm dx, $$ where we integrate over the intersections of $P(b)$ with the subspaces parallel to a fixed rational subspace $L$ through all lattice points, and sum the integrals. The purely discrete sum is of course a particular case ($L=0$), so $S^0(P(b), 1)$ counts the integer points in the parametric polytopes. The chambers are the open conical subsets of $R^N$ such that the shape of $P(b)$ does not change when $b$ runs over a chamber. We first prove that on every chamber of $R^N$, $S^L (P(b),h)$ is given by a quasi-polynomial function of $b\in R^N$. A key point of our paper is an analysis of the interplay between two notions of degree on quasi-polynomials: the usual polynomial degree and a filtration, called the local degree. Then, for a fixed $k\leq d$, we consider a particular linear combination of such intermediate weighted sums, which was introduced by Barvinok in order to compute efficiently the $k+1$ highest coefficients of the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial which gives the number of points of a dilated rational polytope. Thus, for each chamber, we obtain a quasi-polynomial function of $b$, which we call Barvinok's patched quasi-polynomial (at codimension level $k$). Finally, for each chamber, we introduce a new quasi-polynomial function of $b$, the cone-by-cone patched quasi-polynomial (at codimension level $k$), defined in a refined way by linear combinations of intermediate generating functions for the cones at vertices of $P(b)$. We prove that both patched quasi-polynomials agree with the discrete weighted sum $b\mapsto S^0(P(b),h)$ in the terms corresponding to the $k+1$ highest polynomial degrees.

Convex-normal (pairs of) polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 2012 Gubeladze (Adv.\ Math.\ 2012) introduced the notion of k-convex-normal polytopes to show that integral polytopes all of whose edges are longer than 4d(d+1) have the integer decomposition property. In the first part of this paper we show that for lattice polytopes there is no difference between k- and (k+1)-convex-normality (for k >= 3) and improve the bound to 2d(d+1). In the second part we extend the definition to pairs of polytopes and show that for rational polytopes P and Q, where the normal fan of P is a refinement of the normal fan of Q, if every edge e_P of P is at least d times as long as the corresponding edge e_Q of Q, then (P+Q) \cap \Z^d = (P\cap \Z^d) + (Q \cap \Z^d).

Ehrhart Series of Polytopes Related to Symmetric Doubly-Stochastic Matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
In Ehrhart theory, the $h^*$-vector of a rational polytope often provide insights into properties of the polytope that may be otherwise obscured. As an example, the Birkhoff polytope, also known as the polytope of real doubly-stochastic matrices, has a unimodal $h^*$-vector, but when even small modifications are made to the polytope, the same property can be very difficult to prove. In this paper, we examine the $h^*$-vectors of a class of polytopes containing real doubly-stochastic symmetric matrices.
Intermediate Sums on Polyhedra II: Bidegree and Poisson Formula
Published in Mathematika 62 (2016) 653-684 • View PublicationBIB
We continue our study of intermediate sums over polyhedra, interpolating between integrals and discrete sums, which were introduced by A. Barvinok [Computing the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of a rational simplex, Math. Comp. 75 (2006), 1449-1466]. By well-known decompositions, it is sufficient to consider the case of affine cones s+c, where s is an arbitrary real vertex and c is a rational polyhedral cone. For a given rational subspace L, we integrate a given polynomial function h over all lattice slices of the affine cone s + c parallel to the subspace L and sum up the integrals. We study these intermediate sums by means of the intermediate generating functions $S^L(s+c)(ξ)$, and expose the bidegree structure in parameters s and $ξ$, which was implicitly used in the algorithms in our papers [Computation of the highest coefficients of weighted Ehrhart quasi-polynomials of rational polyhedra, Found. Comput. Math. 12 (2012), 435-469] and [Intermediate sums on polyhedra: Computation and real Ehrhart theory, Mathematika 59 (2013), 1-22]. The bidegree structure is key to a new proof for the Baldoni--Berline--Vergne approximation theorem for discrete generating functions [Local Euler--Maclaurin expansion of Barvinok valuations and Ehrhart coefficients of rational polytopes, Contemp. Math. 452 (2008), 15-33], using the Fourier analysis with respect to the parameter s and a continuity argument. Our study also enables a forthcoming paper, in which we study intermediate sums over multi-parameter families of polytopes.

Binomial regular sequences and free sums

Recently several authors have proved results on Ehrhart series of free sums of rational polytopes. In this note we treat these results from an algebraic viewpoint. Instead of attacking combinatorial statements directly, we derive them from structural results on affine monoids and their algebras that allow conclusions for Hilbert and Ehrhart series. We characterize when a binomial regular sequence generates a prime ideal or even normality is preserved for the residue class ring.

On the equality case in Ehrhart's volume conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
Ehrhart's conjecture proposes a sharp upper bound on the volume of a convex body whose barycenter is its only interior lattice point. Recently, Berman and Berndtsson proved this conjecture for a class of rational polytopes including reflexive polytopes. In particular, they showed that the complex projective space has the maximal anticanonical degree among all toric Kaehler-Einstein Fano manifolds. In this note, we prove that projective space is the only such toric manifold with maximal degree by proving its corresponding convex-geometric statement. We also discuss a generalized version of Ehrhart's conjecture involving an invariant corresponding to the so-called greatest lower bound on the Ricci curvature.

Lattice points in vector-dilated polytopes
For $A\in\mathbb{Z}^{m\times n}$ we investigate the behaviour of the number of lattice points in $P_A(b)=\{x\in\mathbb{R}^n:Ax\leq b\}$, depending on the varying vector $b$. It is known that this number, restricted to a cone of constant combinatorial type of $P_A(b)$, is a quasi-polynomial function if b is an integral vector. We extend this result to rational vectors $b$ and show that the coefficients themselves are piecewise-defined polynomials. To this end, we use a theorem of McMullen on lattice points in Minkowski-sums of rational dilates of rational polytopes and take a closer look at the coefficients appearing there.
Polyhedral adjunction theory
Published in Algebra Number Theory 7 (2013) 2417-2446 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we give a combinatorial view on the adjunction theory of toric varieties. Inspired by classical adjunction theory of polarized algebraic varieties we define two convex-geometric notions: the Q-codegree and the nef value of a rational polytope P. We define the adjoint polytope P^(s) as the set of those points in P, whose lattice distance to every facet of P is at least s. We prove a structure theorem for lattice polytopes P with high Q-codegree. If P^(s) is empty for some s < 2/(dim(P)+2), then the lattice polytope P has lattice width one. This has consequences in Ehrhart theory and on polarized toric varieties with dual defect. Moreover, we illustrate how classification results in adjunction theory can be translated into new classification results for lattice polytopes.
