Weighted Ehrhart Theory: Extending Stanley's nonnegativity theorem
Published in Adv. in Math.. {\bf 444} (2024), 109627 • View PublicationBIB
We generalize R. P. Stanley's celebrated theorem that the $h^\ast$-polynomial of the Ehrhart series of a rational polytope has nonnegative coefficients and is monotone under containment of polytopes. We show that these results continue to hold for weighted Ehrhart series where lattice points are counted with polynomial weights, as long as the weights are homogeneous polynomials decomposable as sums of products of linear forms that are nonnegative on the polytope. We also show nonnegativity of the $h^\ast$-polynomial as a real-valued function for a larger family of weights. We then target the case when the weight function is the square of a single (arbitrary) linear form. We show stronger results for two-dimensional convex lattice polygons and give concrete examples showing tightness of the hypotheses. As an application, we construct a counterexample to a conjecture by Berg, Jochemko, and Silverstein on Ehrhart tensor polynomials.
Restricted Chain-Order Polytopes via Combinatorial Mutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study restricted chain-order polytopes associated to Young diagrams using combinatorial mutations. These polytopes are obtained by intersecting chain-order polytopes with certain hyperplanes. The family of chain-order polytopes associated to a poset interpolate between the order and chain polytopes of the poset. Each such polytope retains properties of the order and chain polytope; for example its Ehrhart polynomial. For a fixed Young diagram, we show that all restricted chain-order polytopes are related by a sequence of combinatorial mutations. Since the property of giving rise to the period collapse phenomenon is invariant under combinatorial mutations, we provide a large class of rational polytopes that give rise to period collapse.
Chainlink Polytopes and Ehrhart-Equivalence
Published in Annals of Combinatorics (2024), Vol 28, pp 1141-1166 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a class of polytopes that we call chainlink polytopes and which allow us to construct infinite families of pairs of non isomorphic rational polytopes with the same Ehrhart quasi-polynomial. Our construction is based on circular fence posets, which admit a non-obvious and non-trivial symmetry in their rank sequences that turns out to be reflected in the polytope level. We introduce the related class of chainlink posets and show that they exhibit the same symmetry properties. We further prove an outstanding conjecture on the unimodality of circular rank polynomials.
Machine Learning the Dimension of a Polytope
Published • View PublicationBIB
We use machine learning to predict the dimension of a lattice polytope directly from its Ehrhart series. This is highly effective, achieving almost 100% accuracy. We also use machine learning to recover the volume of a lattice polytope from its Ehrhart series, and to recover the dimension, volume, and quasi-period of a rational polytope from its Ehrhart series. In each case we achieve very high accuracy, and we propose mathematical explanations for why this should be so.

Boundary $h^\ast$-polynomials of rational polytopes
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics 37 (2023), no. 3, 1952-1969 • View PublicationBIB
If $P$ is a lattice polytope (i.e., $P$ is the convex hull of finitely many integer points in $\mathbb{R}^d$) of dimension $d$, Ehrhart's famous theorem (1962) asserts that the integer-point counting function $|nP \cap \mathbb{Z}^d|$ is a degree-$d$ polynomial in the integer variable $n$. Equivalently, the generating function $1 + \sum_{n\geq 1} |nP \cap \mathbb{Z}^d| \, z^n$ is a rational function of the form $\frac{ h^\ast(z) }{ (1-z)^{ d+1 } }$; we call $h^\ast(z)$ the $h^\ast$-polynomial of $P$. There are several known necessary conditions for $h^\ast$-polynomials, including results by Hibi (1990), Stanley (1991), and Stapledon (2009), who used an interplay of arithmetic (integer-point structure) and topological (local $h$-vectors of triangulations) data of a given polytope. We introduce an alternative ansatz to understand Ehrhart theory through the $h^\ast$-polynomial of the boundary of a polytope, recovering all of the above results and their extensions for rational polytopes in a unifying manner. We include applications for (rational) Gorenstein polytopes and rational Ehrhart dilations.

Restricted Birkhoff polytopes and Ehrhart period collapse
Published in Discrete & Computational Geometry, 2024 • View PublicationBIB
We show that the polytopes obtained from the Birkhoff polytope by imposing additional inequalities restricting the "longest increasing subsequence" have Ehrhart quasi-polynomials which are honest polynomials, even though they are just rational polytopes in general. We do this by defining a continuous, piecewise-linear bijection to a certain Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope. This bijection is not an integral equivalence but it respects lattice points in the appropriate way to imply that the two polytopes have the same Ehrhart (quasi-)polynomials. In fact, the bijection is essentially the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence.

Rational Ehrhart Theory

The Ehrhart quasipolynomial of a rational polytope $\mathsf{P}$ encodes fundamental arithmetic data of $\mathsf{P}$, namely, the number of integer lattice points in positive integral dilates of $\mathsf{P}$. Ehrhart quasipolynomials were introduced in the 1960s, satisfy several fundamental structural results and have applications in many areas of mathematics and beyond. The enumerative theory of lattice points in rational (equivalently, real) dilates of rational polytopes is much younger, starting with work by Linke (2011), Baldoni-Berline-Koeppe-Vergne (2013), and Stapledon (2017). We introduce a generating-function ansatz for rational Ehrhart quasipolynomials, which unifies several known results in classical and rational Ehrhart theory. In particular, we define $γ$-rational Gorenstein polytopes, which extend the classical notion to the rational setting and encompass the generalized reflexive polytopes studied by Fiset-Kasprzyk (2008) and Kasprzyk-Nill (2012).
Computing the covering radius of a polytope with an application to lonely runners
Published in Combinatorica, Vol. 42, Issue 4, 463-490 (2022) • View PublicationBIB
We are concerned with the computational problem of determining the covering radius of a rational polytope. This parameter is defined as the minimal dilation factor that is needed for the lattice translates of the correspondingly dilated polytope to cover the whole space. As our main result, we describe a new algorithm for this problem, which is simpler, more efficient and easier to implement than the only prior algorithm of Kannan (1992). Motivated by a variant of the famous Lonely Runner Conjecture, we use its geometric interpretation in terms of covering radii of zonotopes, and apply our algorithm to prove the first open case of three runners with individual starting points.
Decompositions of Ehrhart $h^*$-polynomials for rational polytopes
Published in Discrete & Computational Geometry 68, no. 1 (2022), 50-71 • View PublicationBIB
The Ehrhart quasipolynomial of a rational polytope $P$ encodes the number of integer lattice points in dilates of $P$, and the $h^*$-polynomial of $P$ is the numerator of the accompanying generating function. We provide two decomposition formulas for the $h^*$-polynomial of a rational polytope. The first decomposition generalizes a theorem of Betke and McMullen for lattice polytopes. We use our rational Betke--McMullen formula to provide a novel proof of Stanley's Monotonicity Theorem for the $h^*$-polynomial of a rational polytope. The second decomposition generalizes a result of Stapledon, which we use to provide rational extensions of the Stanley and Hibi inequalities satisfied by the coefficients of the $h^*$-polynomial for lattice polytopes. Lastly, we apply our results to rational polytopes containing the origin whose duals are lattice polytopes.

Rational polytopes with Ehrhart coefficients of arbitrary period
Published • View PublicationBIB
A seminal result of E. Ehrhart states that the number of integer lattice points in the dilation of a rational polytope by a positive integer $k$ is a quasi-polynomial function of $k$ --- that is, a "polynomial" in which the coefficients are themselves periodic functions of $k$. Using a result of F. Liu on the Ehrhart polynomials of cyclic polytopes, we construct not-necessarily-convex rational polytopes of arbitrary dimension in which the periods of the coefficient functions appearing in the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial take on arbitrary values.

Two poset polytopes are mutation-equivalent
The combinatorial mutation $\mathrm{mut}_w(P,F)$ for a lattice polytope $P$ was introduced in the context of mirror symmetry for Fano manifolds in [1]. It was also proved in [1] that for a lattice polytope $P \subseteq N_\mathbb{R}$ containing the origin in its interior, the polar duals $P^* \subseteq M_\mathbb{R}$ and $\mathrm{mut}_w(P,F)^* \subseteq M_\mathbb{R}$ have the same Ehrhart series. For extending this framework, in this paper, we introduce the combinatorial mutation for the Minkowski sum of rational polytopes and rational polyhedral pointed cones in $N_\mathbb{R}$. We can also introduce the combinatorial mutation in the dual side $M_\mathbb{R}$, which we can apply for every rational polytope in $M_\mathbb{R}$ containing the origin (not necessarily in the interior). As an application of this extension of the combinatorial mutation, we prove that the chain polytope of a poset $Π$ can be obtained by a sequence of the combinatorial mutation in $M_\mathbb{R}$ from the order polytope of $Π$. Namely, the order polytope and the chain polytope of the same poset $Π$ are mutation-equivalent.

Coefficients of the solid angle and Ehrhart quasi-polynomials
Macdonald studied a discrete volume measure for a rational polytope $P$, called solid angle sum, that gives a natural discrete volume for $P$. We give a local formula for the codimension two quasi-coefficient of the solid angle sum of $P$. We also show how to recover the classical Ehrhart quasi-polynomial from the solid angle sum and in particular we find a similar local formula for the codimension one and codimension two quasi-coefficients. These local formulas are naturally valid for all positive real dilates of $P$. An interesting open question is to determine necessary and sufficient conditions on a polytope $P$ for which the discrete volume of $P$ given by the solid angle sum equals its continuous volume: $A_P(t) = \mathrm{vol}(P) t^d$. We prove that a sufficient condition is that $P$ tiles $\mathbb R^d$ by translations, together with the Hyperoctahedral group.

Higher Connectivity of Tropicalizations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the tropicalization of an irreducible d-dimensional variety over a field of characteristic 0 is (d-l)-connected through codimension one, where l is the dimension of the lineality space of the tropicalization. From this we obtain a higher connectivity result for skeleta of rational polytopes. We also prove a tropical analogue of the Bertini Theorem: the intersection of the tropicalization of an irreducible variety with a generic hyperplane is again the tropicalization of an irreducible variety.

Counting numerical semigroups by genus and even gaps via Kunz-coordinate vectors

We contruct a one-to-one correspondence between a subset of numerical semigroups with genus $g$ and $γ$ even gaps and the integer points of a rational polytope. In particular, we give an overview to apply this correspondence to try to decide if the sequence $(n_g)$ is increasing, where $n_g$ denotes the number of numerical semigroups with genus $g$.

ECH capacities, Ehrhart theory, and toric varieties
Published in Journal of Symplectic Geometry, 19(2), 475-506. (2021) • View PublicationBIB
ECH capacities were developed by Hutchings to study embedding problems for symplectic $4$-manifolds with boundary. They have found especial success in the case of certain toric symplectic manifolds where many of the computations resemble calculations found in cohomology of $\mathbb{Q}$-line bundles on toric varieties, or in lattice point counts for rational polytopes. We formalise this observation in the case of convex toric lattice domains $X_Ω$ by constructing a natural polarised toric variety $(Y_{Σ(Ω)},D_Ω)$ containing the all the information of the ECH capacities of $X_Ω$ in purely algebro-geometric terms. Applying the Ehrhart theory of the polytopes involved in this construction gives some new results in the combinatorialisation and asymptotics of ECH capacities for convex toric domains.

Quasi-period collapse for duals to Fano polygons: an explanation arising from algebraic geometry
The Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of a rational polytope $P$ is a fundamental invariant counting lattice points in integer dilates of $P$. The quasi-period of this quasi-polynomial divides the denominator of $P$ but is not always equal to it: this situation is called quasi-period collapse. Polytopes experiencing quasi-period collapse appear widely across algebra and geometry, and yet the phenomenon remains largely mysterious. Using techniques from algebraic geometry - specifically the $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein deformation theory of orbifold del Pezzo surfaces - we explain quasi-period collapse for rational polygons dual to Fano polygons and describe explicitly the discrepancy between the quasi-period and the denominator.
Counting Integral Points in Polytopes via Numerical Analysis of Contour Integration
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we address the problem of counting integer points in a rational polytope described by $P(y) = \{ x \in \mathbb{R}^m \colon Ax = y, x \geq 0\}$, where $A$ is an $n \times m$ integer matrix and $y$ is an $n$-dimensional integer vector. We study the Z-transformation approach initiated by Brion-Vergne, Beck, and Lasserre-Zeron from the numerical analysis point of view, and obtain a new algorithm on this problem: If $A$ is nonnegative, then the number of integer points in $P(y)$ can be computed in $O(\mathrm{poly} (n,m, \|y\|_\infty) (\|y\|_\infty + 1)^n)$ time and $O(\mathrm{poly} (n,m, \|y\|_\infty))$ space. This improves, in terms of space complexity, a naive DP algorithm with $O((\|y\|_\infty + 1)^n)$-size DP table. Our result is based on the standard error analysis to the numerical contour integration for the inverse Z-transform, and establish a new type of an inclusion-exclusion formula for integer points in $P(y)$. We apply our result to hypergraph $b$-matching, and obtain a $O(\mathrm{poly}( n,m,\|b\|_\infty) (\|b\|_\infty +1)^{(1-1/k)n})$ time algorithm for counting $b$-matchings in a $k$-partite hypergraph with $n$ vertices and $m$ hyperedges. This result is viewed as a $b$-matching generalization of the classical result by Ryser for $k=2$ and its multipartite extension by Bj{ö}rklund-Husfeldt.

On the number of integer points in translated and expanded polyhedra
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the problem of minimizing the number of integer points inparallel translations of a rational convex polytope in $\mathbb{R}^6$ is NP-hard. We apply this result to show that given a rational convex polytope $P \subset \mathbb{R}^6$, finding the largest integer $t$ s.t. the expansion $tP$ contains fewer than $k$ integer points is also NP-hard. We conclude that the Ehrhart quasi-polynomials of rational polytopes can have arbitrary fluctuations.

Reconstruction of symmetric convex bodies from Ehrhart-like data
In a previous paper, we showed how to use the Ehrhart function $L_P(s)$, defined by $L_P(s) = \#(sP \cap \mathbb Z^d)$, to reconstruct a polytope $P$. More specifically, we showed that, for rational polytopes $P$ and $Q$, if $L_{P + w}(s) = L_{Q + w}(s)$ for all integer vectors $w$, then $P = Q$. In this paper we show the same result, but assuming that $P$ and $Q$ are symmetric convex bodies instead of rational polytopes.

Reconstruction of rational polytopes from the real-parameter Ehrhart function of its translates
When extending the Ehrhart lattice point enumerator $L_P(t)$ to allow real dilation parameters $t$, we lose the invariance under integer translations that exists when $t$ is restricted to be an integer. This paper studies this phenomenon; in particular, it is shown that, for full-dimensional $P$, not only there are infinitely many different functions $L_{P + w}(t)$ (for integer $w$), but that for rational $P$ the collection of these functions identifies $P$ uniquely.
