Combinatorial Differential Algebra of $x^p$
Published in Journal of Symbolic Computation, 114:193-208, 2023 • View PublicationBIB
We link $n$-jets of the affine monomial scheme defined by $x^p$ to the stable set polytope of some perfect graph. We prove that, as $p$ varies, the dimension of the coordinate ring of a certain subscheme of the scheme of $n$-jets as a $\mathbb{C}$-vector space is a polynomial of degree $n+1$, namely the Ehrhart polynomial of the stable set polytope of that graph. One main ingredient for our proof is a result of Zobnin who determined a differential Gröbner basis of the differential ideal generated by $x^p$. We generalize Zobnin's result to the bivariate case. We study $(m,n)$-jets, a higher-dimensional analog of jets, and relate them to regular unimodular triangulations.

A regular unimodular triangulation of reflexive 2-supported weighted projective space simplices
Published • View PublicationBIB
For each integer partition $\mathbf{q}$ with $d$ parts, we denote by $Δ_{(1,\mathbf{q})}$ the lattice simplex obtained as the convex hull in $\mathbb{R}^d$ of the standard basis vectors along with the vector $-\mathbf{q}$. For $\mathbf{q}$ with two distinct parts such that $Δ_{(1,\mathbf{q})}$ is reflexive and has the integer decomposition property, we establish a characterization of the lattice points contained in $Δ_{(1,\mathbf{q})}$. We then construct a Gröbner basis with a squarefree initial ideal of the toric ideal defined by these simplices. This establishes the existence of a regular unimodular triangulation for reflexive 2-supported $Δ_{(1,\mathbf{q})}$ having the integer decomposition property.

Invariant Schreier decorations of unimodular random networks
We prove that every $2d$-regular unimodular random network carries an invariant random Schreier decoration. Equivalently, it is the Schreier coset graph of an invariant random subgroup of the free group $F_d$. As a corollary we get that every $2d$-regular graphing is the local isomorphic image of a graphing coming from a p.m.p. action of $F_d$. The key ingredients of the analogous statement for finite graphs do not generalize verbatim to the measurable setting. We find a more subtle way of adapting these ingredients and prove measurable coloring theorems for graphings along the way.

Birkhoff polytopes of different type and the orthant-lattice property
The Birkhoff polytope, defined to be the convex hull of $n\times n$ permutation matrices, is a well studied polytope in the context of the Ehrhart theory. This polytope is known to have many desirable properties, such as the Gorenstein property and existence of regular, unimodular triangulations. In this paper, we study analogues of the Birkhoff polytope for finite irreducible Coxeter groups of other types. We focus on a type-$B$ Birkhoff polytope $\mathcal{BB}(n)$ arising from signed permutation matrices and prove that it and its dual polytope are reflexive, and hence Gorenstein, and also possess regular, unimodular triangulations. Noting that our triangulation proofs do not rely on the combinatorial structure of $\mathcal{BB}(n)$, we define the notion of an orthant-lattice property polytope and use this to prove more general results for the existence of regular, unimodular triangulations and unimodular covers for a significant family of reflexive polytopes. We conclude by remarking on some connections to Gale-duality, Birkhoff polytopes of other types, and possible applications of orthant-lattice property.

Enriched chain polytopes
Published in Israel Journal of Mathematics 237 (2020), 485 - 500 • View PublicationBIB
Stanley introduced a lattice polytope $\mathcal{C}_P$ arising from a finite poset $P$, which is called the chain polytope of $P$. The geometric structure of $\mathcal{C}_P$ has good relations with the combinatorial structure of $P$. In particular, the Ehrhart polynomial of $\mathcal{C}_P$ is given by the order polynomial of $P$. In the present paper, associated to $P$, we introduce a lattice polytope $\mathcal{E}_{P}$, which is called the enriched chain polytope of $P$, and investigate geometric and combinatorial properties of this polytope. By virtue of the algebraic technique on Gröbner bases, we see that $\mathcal{E}_P$ is a reflexive polytope with a flag regular unimodular triangulation. Moreover, the $h^*$-polynomial of $\mathcal{E}_P$ is equal to the $h$-polynomial of a flag triangulation of a sphere. On the other hand, by showing that the Ehrhart polynomial of $\mathcal{E}_P$ coincides with the left enriched order polynomial of $P$, it follows from works of Stembridge and Petersen that the $h^*$-polynomial of $\mathcal{E}_P$ is $γ$-positive. Stronger, we prove that the $γ$-polynomial of $\mathcal{E}_P$ is equal to the $f$-polynomial of a flag simplicial complex.

Reflexive polytopes arising from bipartite graphs with $γ$-positivity associated to interior polynomials
Published in Selecta Mathematica. New Series 26 (2020), 59 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we introduce polytopes ${\mathcal B}_G$ arising from root systems $B_n$ and finite graphs $G$, and study their combinatorial and algebraic properties. In particular, it is shown that ${\mathcal B}_G$ is reflexive if and only if $G$ is bipartite. Moreover, in the case, ${\mathcal B}_G$ has a regular unimodular triangulation. This implies that the $h^*$-polynomial of ${\mathcal B}_G$ is palindromic and unimodal when $G$ is bipartite. Furthermore, we discuss stronger properties, namely the $γ$-positivity and the real-rootedness of the $h^*$-polynomials. In fact, if $G$ is bipartite, then the $h^*$-polynomial of ${\mathcal B}_G$ is $γ$-positive and its $γ$-polynomial is given by an interior polynomial (a version of the Tutte polynomial for a hypergraph). The $h^*$-polynomial is real-rooted if and only if the corresponding interior polynomial is real-rooted. From a counterexample to Neggers--Stanley conjecture, we construct a bipartite graph $G$ whose $h^*$-polynomial is not real-rooted but $γ$-positive, and coincides with the $h$-polynomial of a flag triangulation of a sphere.

Integer decomposition property for Cayley sums of order and stable set polytopes
Published in Michigan Mathematical Journal 69 (2020), 765--778 • View PublicationBIB
Lattice polytopes which possess the integer decomposition property (IDP for short) turn up in many fields of mathematics. It is known that if the Cayley sum of lattice polytopes possesses IDP, then so does their Minkowski sum. In this paper, the Cayley sum of the order polytope of a finite poset and the stable set polytope of a finite simple graph is studied. We show that the Cayley sum of an order polytope and the stable set polytope of a perfect graph possesses a regular unimodular triangulation and IDP, and hence so does their Minkowski sum. Moreover, it turns out that, for an order polytope and the stable set polytope of a graph, the following conditions are equivalent: (i) the Cayley sum is Gorenstein; (ii) the Minkowski sum is Gorenstein; (iii) the graph is perfect.

K3 Polytopes and their Quartic Surfaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
K3 polytopes appear in complements of tropical quartic surfaces. They are dual to regular unimodular central triangulations of reflexive polytopes in the fourth dilation of the standard tetrahedron. Exploring these combinatorial objects, we classify K3 polytopes with up to $30$ vertices. Their number is $36\,297\,333$. We study the singular loci of quartic surfaces that tropicalize to K3 polytopes. These surfaces are stable in the sense of Geometric Invariant Theory.
Existence of regular unimodular triangulations of dilated empty simplices

Given integers $k$ and $m$ with $k \geq 2$ and $m \geq 2$, let $P$ be an empty simplex of dimension $(2k-1)$ whose $δ$-polynomial is of the form $1+(m-1)t^k$. In the present paper, the necessary and sufficient condition for the $k$-th dilation $kP$ of $P$ to have a regular unimodular triangulation will be presented.

Pattern-Avoiding Polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Two well-known polytopes whose vertices are indexed by permutations in the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ are the permutohedron $P_n$ and the Birkhoff polytope $B_n$. We consider polytopes $P_n(Π)$ and $B_n(Π)$, whose vertices correspond to the permutations in $\mathfrak{S}_n$ avoiding a set of patterns $Π$. For various choices of $Π$, we explore the Ehrhart polynomials and $h^*$-vectors of these polytopes as well as other aspects of their combinatorial structure. For $P_n(Π)$, we consider all subsets $Π\subseteq \mathfrak{S}_3$ and are able to provide results in most cases. To illustrate, $P_n(123,132)$ is a Pitman-Stanley polytope, the number of interior lattice points in $P_n(132,312)$ is a derangement number, and the normalized volume of $P_n(123,231,312)$ is the number of trees on $n$ vertices. The polytopes $B_n(Π)$ seem much more difficult to analyze, so we focus on four particular choices of $Π$. First we show that the $B_n(231,321)$ is exactly the Chan-Robbins-Yuen polytope. Next we prove that for any $Π$ containing $\{123,312\}$ we have $h^*(B_n(Π))=1$. Finally, we study $B_n(132,312)$ and $\widetilde{B}_n(123)$, where the tilde indicates that we choose vertices corresponding to alternating permutations avoiding the pattern $123$. In both cases we use order complexes of posets and techniques from toric algebra to construct regular, unimodular triangulations of the polytopes. The posets involved turn out to be isomorphic to the lattices of Young diagrams contained in a certain shape, and this permits us to give an exact expression for the normalized volumes of the corresponding polytopes via the hook formula. Finally, Stanley's theory of $(P,ω)$-partitions allows us to show that their $h^*$-vectors are symmetric and unimodal. Various questions and conjectures are presented throughout.
Moduli of Tropical Plane Curves
Published in Res. Math. Sci. 2:4 (2015) • View PublicationBIB
We study the moduli space of metric graphs that arise from tropical plane curves. There are far fewer such graphs than tropicalizations of classical plane curves. For fixed genus $g$, our moduli space is a stacky fan whose cones are indexed by regular unimodular triangulations of Newton polygons with $g$ interior lattice points. It has dimension $2g+1$ unless $g \leq 3$ or $g = 7$. We compute these spaces explicitly for $g \leq 5$.

Shellability, Ehrhart Theory, and $r$-stable Hypersimplices
Hypersimplices are well-studied objects in combinatorics, optimization, and representation theory. For each hypersimplex, we define a new family of subpolytopes, called r-stable hypersimplices, and show that a well-known regular unimodular triangulation of the hypersimplex restricts to a triangulation of each r-stable hypersimplex. For the case of the second hypersimplex defined by the two-element subsets of an n-set, we provide a shelling of this triangulation that sequentially shells each r-stable sub-hypersimplex. In this case, we utilize the shelling to compute the Ehrhart h*-polynomials of these polytopes, and the hypersimplex, via independence polynomials of graphs. For one such r-stable hypersimplex, this computation yields a connection to CR mappings of Lens spaces via Ehrhart-MacDonald reciprocity.

Existence of a regular unimodular triangulation of the edge polytopes of finite graphs
In this paper we give several criteria for the edge polytope of a fundamental FHM-graph to possess a regular unimodular triangulation in terms of some simple data of the the graph. We further apply our criteria to several examples of graphs and show that their edge polytopes possess a regular unimodular triangulation.

Noncrossing sets and a Graßmann associahedron
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma, 5 (2017), e5 • View PublicationBIB
We study a natural generalization of the noncrossing relation between pairs of elements in [n] to k-tuples in [n] that was first considered by Petersen, Pylyavskyy, Speyer (2010). We give an alternative approach to their result that the flag simplicial complex on $\binom{[n]}{k}$ induced by this relation is a regular, unimodular and flag triangulation of the order polytope of the poset given by the product $[k]\times[n-k]$ of two chains (also called Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope), and that it is the join of a simplex and a sphere (that is, it is a Gorenstein triangulation). We then observe that this already implies the existence of a flag simplicial polytope generalizing the dual associahedron, whose Stanley-Reisner ideal is an initial ideal of the Graßmann-Plücker ideal, while previous constructions of such a polytope did not guarantee flagness nor reduced to the dual associahedron for k=2. On our way we provide general results about order polytopes and their triangulations. We call the simplicial complex the noncrossing complex, and the polytope derived from it the dual Graßmann associahedron. We extend results of Petersen, Pylyavskyy, Speyer (2010) showing that the non-crossing complex and the Graßmann associahedron naturally reflect the relations between Graßmannians with different parameters, in particular the isomorphism $G_{k,n} \cong G_{n-k,n}$. Moreover, our approach allows us to show that the adjacency graph of the noncrossing complex admits a natural acyclic orientation that allows us to define a Graßmann-Tamari order on maximal noncrossing families. Finally, we look at the precise relation of the noncrossing complex and the weak separability complex of Leclerc, Zelevinsky (1998) and show that the weak separability complex is the cyclically invariant part of the noncrossibg complex.

Ehrhart f*-coefficients of polytopal complexes are non-negative integers
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Ehrhart polynomial $L_P$ of an integral polytope $P$ counts the number of integer points in integral dilates of $P$. Ehrhart polynomials of polytopes are often described in terms of their Ehrhart $h^*$-vector (aka Ehrhart $δ$-vector), which is the vector of coefficients of $L_P$ with respect to a certain binomial basis and which coincides with the $h$-vector of a regular unimodular triangulation of $P$ (if one exists). One important result by Stanley about $h^*$-vectors of polytopes is that their entries are always non-negative. However, recent combinatorial applications of Ehrhart theory give rise to polytopal complexes with $h^*$-vectors that have negative entries. In this article we introduce the Ehrhart $f^*$-vector of polytopes or, more generally, of polytopal complexes $K$. These are again coefficient vectors of $L_K$ with respect to a certain binomial basis of the space of polynomials and they have the property that the $f^*$-vector of a unimodular simplicial complex coincides with its $f$-vector. The main result of this article is a counting interpretation for the $f^*$-coefficients which implies that $f^*$-coefficients of integral polytopal complexes are always non-negative integers. This holds even if the polytopal complex does not have a unimodular triangulation and if its $h^*$-vector does have negative entries. Our main technical tool is a new partition of the set of lattice points in a simplicial cone into discrete cones. Further results include a complete characterization of Ehrhart polynomials of integral partial polytopal complexes and a non-negativity theorem for the $f^*$-vectors of rational polytopal complexes.

Matroid Polytopes: Algorithms, Theory, and Applications
This dissertation presents new results on three different themes all related to matroid polytopes. First we investigate properties of Ehrhart polynomials of matroid polytopes, independence matroid polytopes, and polymatroids. We prove that for fixed rank their Ehrhart polynomials are computable in polynomial time. The proof relies on the geometry of these polytopes as well as a new refined analysis of the evaluation of Todd polynomials. Second, we discuss theoretical results regarding the algebraic combinatorics of matroid polytopes. We discuss two conjectures about the h^*-vector and coefficients of Ehrhart polynomials of matroid polytopes and provide theoretical and computational evidence for their validity. We also explore a variant of White's conjecture which states that every matroid polytope has a regular unimodular triangulation. We provide extensive computational evidence supporting this new conjecture and propose a combinatorial condition on simplices sufficient for unimodularity. Finally, motivated by recent work on algorithmic theory for non-linear and multicriteria matroid optimization, we have developed algorithms and heuristics aimed at practical solutions of large instances of these difficult problems. Our methods primarily use the local adjacency structure inherent in matroid polytopes to pivot to feasible solutions which may or may not be optimal. We also present a modified breadth-first-search heuristic that uses adjacency to enumerate a subset of feasible solutions. We present other heuristics, and provide computational evidence supporting these new techniques. We implemented all of our algorithms in the software package MOCHA (Matroids Optimization Combinatorial Heuristics and Algorithms).

Inequalities and Ehrhart $δ$-Vectors
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 361 (2009), 5615-5626. • View PublicationBIB
For any lattice polytope $P$, we consider an associated polynomial $\barδ_{P}(t)$ and describe its decomposition into a sum of two polynomials satisfying certain symmetry conditions. As a consequence, we improve upon known inequalities satisfied by the coefficients of the Ehrhart $δ$-vector of a lattice polytope. We also provide combinatorial proofs of two results of Stanley that were previously established using techniques from commutative algebra. Finally, we give a necessary numerical criterion for the existence of a regular unimodular lattice triangulation of the boundary of a lattice polytope.

h-vectors of Gorenstein polytopes
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 114 (2007), no. 1, 65-76 • View PublicationBIB
We show that the Ehrhart h-vector of an integer Gorenstein polytope with a regular unimodular triangulation satisfies McMullen's g-theorem; in particular, it is unimodal. This result generalizes a recent theorem of Athanasiadis (conjectured by Stanley) for compressed polytopes. It is derived from a more general theorem on Gorenstein affine normal monoids M: one can factor K[M] (K a field) by a "long" regular sequence in such a way that the quotient is still a normal affine monoid algebra. This technique reduces all questions about the Ehrhart h-vector of P to the Ehrhart h-vector of a Gorenstein polytope Q with exactly one interior lattice point, provided each lattice point in a multiple cP, c in N, can be written as the sum of n lattice points in P. (Up to a translation, the polytope Q belongs to the class of reflexive polytopes considered in connection with mirror symmetry.) If P has a regular unimodular triangulation, then it follows readily that the Ehrhart h-vector of P coincides with the combinatorial h-vector of the boundary complex of a simplicial polytope, and the g-theorem applies.

Toric Initial Ideals of $Δ$-Normal Configurations: Cohen-Macaulayness and Degree Bounds
A normal (respectively, graded normal) vector configuration $A$ defines the toric ideal $I_A$ of a normal (respectively, projectively normal) toric variety. These ideals are Cohen-Macaulay, and when $A$ is normal and graded, $I_A$ is generated in degree at most the dimension of $I_A$. Based on this, Sturmfels asked if these properties extend to initial ideals -- when $A$ is normal, is there an initial ideal of $I_A$ that is Cohen-Macaulay, and when $A$ is normal and graded, does $I_A$ have a Gröbner basis generated in degree at most $dim(I_A)$ ? In this paper, we answer both questions positively for $Δ$-normal configurations. These are normal configurations that admit a regular triangulation $Δ$ with the property that the subconfiguration in each cell of the triangulation is again normal. Such configurations properly contain among them all vector configurations that admit a regular unimodular triangulation. We construct non-trivial families of both $Δ$-normal and non-$Δ$-normal configurations.
