RSK Insertion for Set Partitions and Diagram Algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give combinatorial proofs of two identities from the representation theory of the partition algebra $C A_k(n), n \ge 2k$. The first is $n^k = \sum_λf^λm_k^λ$, where the sum is over partitions $λ$ of $n$, $f^λ$ is the number of standard tableaux of shape $λ$, and $m_k^λ$ is the number of "vacillating tableaux" of shape $λ$ and length $2k$. Our proof uses a combination of Robinson-Schensted-Knuth insertion and jeu de taquin. The second identity is $B(2k) = \sum_λ(m_k^λ)^2$, where $B(2k)$ is the number of set partitions of $\{1, >..., 2k\}$. We show that this insertion restricts to work for the diagram algebras which appear as subalgebras of the partition algebra: the Brauer, Temperley-Lieb, planar partition, rook monoid, planar rook monoid, and symmetric group algebras.

Yang-Baxter bases of 0-Hecke algebras and representation theory of 0-Ariki-Koike-Shoji algebras
Published in Advances in Mathematics 205 (2006), 504-548 • View PublicationBIB
After reformulating the representation theory of 0-Hecke algebras in an appropriate family of Yang-Baxter bases, we investigate certain specializations of the Ariki-Koike algebras, obtained by setting q=0 in a suitably normalized version of Shoji's presentation. We classify the simple and projective modules, and describe restrictions, induction products, Cartan invariants and decomposition matrices. This allows us to identify the Grothendieck rings of the towers of algebras in terms of certain graded Hopf algebras known as the Mantaci-Reutenauer descent algebras, and Poirier quasi-symmetric functions. We also describe the Ext-quivers, and conclude with numerical tables.

Explicit representations by halfspaces of the edge cone of a graph
Published in International Journal of Contemporary Mathematical Sciences, Vol. 1, 2006, no. 1-4, 53 - 66 • View PublicationBIB
Let G be an arbitrary simple graph. The main results are explicit representations of the edge cone of G as a finite intersection of closed halfspaces. If G is bipartite and connected we determine the facets of the edge cone and present a canonical irreducible representation.

Vector partition function and representation theory
We apply some recent developments of Baldoni-Beck-Cochet-Vergne on vector partition function, to Kostant's and Steinberg's formulae, for classical Lie algebras $A\_r$, $B\_r$, $C\_r$, $D\_r$. We therefore get efficient {\tt Maple} programs that compute for these Lie algebras: the multiplicity of a weight in an irreducible finite-dimensional representation; the decomposition coefficients of the tensor product of two irreducible finite-dimensional representations. These programs can also calculate associated Ehrhart quasipolynomials.

Dynkin diagram sequences and stabilization phenomena
Published • View PublicationBIB
We continue the study of stabilization phenomena for Dynkin diagram sequences initiated in the earlier work of Kleber and the present author. We consider a more general class of sequences than that of this earlier work, and isolate a condition on the weights that gives stabilization of tensor product and branching multiplicities. We show that all the results of the previous article can be naturally generalized to this setting. We also prove some properties of the partially ordered set of dominant weights of indefinite Kac-Moody algebras, and use this to give a more concrete definition of a stable representation ring. Finally, we consider the classical sequences $B_n, C_n, D_n$ that fall outside the purview of the earlier work, and work out some simple conditions on the weights which imply stabilization.

Amenability of Universal 2-Grigorchuk group
We consider the universal Grigorchuk 2-group, i.e., the group such that every Grigorchuk 2-group is a quotient. We show that this group has a nice universal representation in the group of all functions f:{0,1,2}^N --> Aut(T_2), where T_2 is a group of automorphism of the binary tree. Finally, we prove that this universal Grigorchuk 2-group is amenable. The proof is an application of the ``Munchhausen trick'' developed by V. Kaimanovich.

Boxicity and Treewidth
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we relate the seemingly unrelated concepts of treewidth and boxicity. Our main result is that, for any graph G, boxicity(G) <= treewidth(G) + 2. We also show that this upper bound is (almost) tight. Our result leads to various interesting consequences, like bounding the boxicity of many well known graph classes, such as chordal graphs, circular arc graphs, AT-free graphs, co--comparability graphs etc. All our bounds are shown to be tight up to small constant factors. An algorithmic consequence of our result is a linear time algorithm to construct a box representation for graphs of bounded treewidth in a space of constant dimension. We also show many structural results as a consequence. In particular, we show that, if the boxicity of a graph is b >= 3, then there exists a simple cycle of length at least b-3 as well as an induced cycle of length at least floor of (log(b-2) to the base Delta) + 2, where Delta is its maximum degree. We also relate boxicity with the cardinality of minimum vertex cover, minimum feedback vertex cover etc. Another structural consequence is that, for any fixed planar graph H, there is a constant c(H) such that, if boxicity(G) >= c(H) then H is a minor of G.

An explicit form for Kerov's character polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Kerov considered the normalized characters of irreducible representations of the symmetric group, evaluated on a cycle, as a polynomial in free cumulants. Biane has proved that this polynomial has integer coefficients, and made various conjectures. Recently, Sniady has proved Biane's conjectured explicit form for the first family of nontrivial terms in this polynomial. In this paper, we give an explicit expression for all terms in Kerov's character polynomials. Our method is through Lagrange inversion.

q-Cartan matrices and combinatorial invariants of derived categories for skewed-gentle algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
Cartan matrices are of fundamental importance in representation theory. For algebras defined by quivers (i.e. directed graphs) with relations the computation of the entries of the Cartan matrix amounts to counting nonzero paths in the quivers, leading naturally to a combinatorial setting. In this paper we study a refined version, so-called q-Cartan matrices, where each nonzero path is weighted by a power of an indeterminant q according to its length. Specializing q=1 gives the classical Cartan matrix. Our main motivation are derived module categories and their invariants: the invariant factors, and hence the determinant, of the Cartan matrix are preserved by derived equivalences. The paper deals with the important class of (skewed-) gentle algebras which occur naturally in representation theory, especially in the context of derived categories. These algebras are defined in purely combinatorial terms. We determine normal forms for the Cartan matrices of (skewed-) gentle algebras. In particular, we give explicit combinatorial formulae for the invariant factors and thus also for the determinant of the Cartan matrices of skewed-gentle algebras. As an application of our main results we show how one can use our formulae for the notoriously difficult problem of distinguishing derived equivalence classes.

The C-polynomial of a knot
Published in Algebr. Geom. Topol. 6 (2006) 1623-1653 • View PublicationBIB
In an earlier paper the first author defined a non-commutative A-polynomial for knots in 3-space, using the colored Jones function. The idea is that the colored Jones function of a knot satisfies a non-trivial linear q-difference equation. Said differently, the colored Jones function of a knot is annihilated by a non-zero ideal of the Weyl algebra which is generalted (after localization) by the non-commutative A-polynomial of a knot. In that paper, it was conjectured that this polynomial (which has to do with representations of the quantum group U_q(SL_2)) specializes at q=1 to the better known A-polynomial of a knot, which has to do with genuine SL_2(C) representations of the knot complement. Computing the non-commutative A-polynomial of a knot is a difficult task which so far has been achieved for the two simplest knots. In the present paper, we introduce the C-polynomial of a knot, along with its non-commutative version, and give an explicit computation for all twist knots. In a forthcoming paper, we will use this information to compute the non-commutative A-polynomial of twist knots. Finally, we formulate a number of conjectures relating the A, the C-polynomial and the Alexander polynomial, all confirmed for the class of twist knots.

Counting with rational generating functions
Published in Journal of Symbolic Computation 43 (2008), 75-91 • View PublicationBIB
We examine two different ways of encoding a counting function, as a rational generating function and explicitly as a function (defined piecewise using the greatest integer function). We prove that, if the degree and number of input variables of the (quasi-polynomial) function are fixed, there is a polynomial time algorithm which converts between the two representations. Examples of such counting functions include Ehrhart quasi-polynomials, vector partition functions, integer points in parametric polytopes, and projections of the integer points in parametric polytopes. For this last example, this algorithm provides the first known way to compute the explicit function in polynomial time. We rely heavily on results of Barvinok, and also of Verdoolaege, Seghir, Beyls, et al.

Combinatorics and Geometry of Higher Level Weyl Modules
Published in AMS Transl., Ser. 2, 221 (2007) • View PublicationBIB
A higher level analog of Weyl modules over multi-variable currents is proposed. It is shown that the sum of their dual spaces form a commutative algebra. The structure of these modules and the geometry of the projective spectrum of this algebra is studied for the currents of dimension one and two. Along the way we prove some particular cases of the conjectures in [FL1] and propose a generalization of the notion of parking function representations.

Combinatorial operators for Kronecker powers of representations of $§_n$
We present combinatorial operators for the expansion of the Kronecker product of irreducible representations of the symmetric group. These combinatorial operators are defined in the ring of symmetric functions and act on the Schur functions basis. This leads to a combinatorial description of the Kronecker powers of the irreducible representations indexed with the partition (n-1,1) which specializes the concept of oscillating tableaux in Young's lattice previously defined by S. Sundaram. We call our specialization {\it Kronecker tableaux}. Their combinatorial analysis leads to enumerative results for the multiplicity of any irreducible representation in the Kronecker powers of the form ${\c^{(n-1,1)}}^{\otimes k}$.

Colored-Descent Representations of Complex Reflection Groups G(r,p,n)
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the complex reflection groups G(r,p,n). By considering these groups as subgroups of the wreath products Z_r wr S_n, and by using Clifford theory, we define combinatorial parameters and descent representations of G(r,p,n), previously known for classical Weyl groups. One of these parameters is the flag major index, which also has an important role in the decomposition of these representations into irreducibles. A Carlitz type identity relating the combinatorial parameters with the degrees of the group, is presented.

An Inductive Proof of the Berry-Esseen Theorem for Character Ratios
Published • View PublicationBIB
Bolthausen used a variation of Stein's method to give an inductive proof of the Berry-Esseen theorem for sums of independent, identically distributed random variables. We modify this technique to prove a Berry-Esseen theorem for character ratios of a random representation of the symmetric group on transpositions. An analogous result is proved for Jack measure on partitions.

A Solomon descent theory for the wreath products G ~ S_n
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 360 (2008), 1475-1538 • View PublicationBIB
We propose an analogue of Solomon's descent theory for the case of a wreath product G ~ S_n, where G is a finite abelian group. Our construction mixes a number of ingredients: Mantaci-Reutenauer algebras, Specht's theory for the representations of wreath products, Okada's extension to wreath products of the Robinson-Schensted correspondence, Poirier's quasisymmetric functions. We insist on the functorial aspect of our definitions and explain the relation of our results with previous work concerning the hyperoctaedral group.

The hook fusion procedure
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 12(1), (2005), R26 • View PublicationBIB
We derive a new expression for the diagonal matrix elements of irreducible representations of the symmetric group. We obtain this new expression using Cherednik's fusion procedure. However, instead of splitting Young diagrams into their rows or columns, we consider their principal hooks. This minimises the number of auxiliary parameters needed in the fusion procedure.

Cubature formulas, geometrical designs, reproducing kernels, and Markov operators
Published • View PublicationBIB
Cubature formulas and geometrical designs are described in terms of reproducing kernels for Hilbert spaces of functions on the one hand, and Markov operators associated to orthogonal group representations on the other hand. In this way, several known results for spheres in Euclidean spaces, involving cubature formulas for polynomial functions and spherical designs, are shown to generalize to large classes of finite measure spaces $(Ω,σ)$ and appropriate spaces of functions inside $L^2(Ω,σ)$. The last section points out how spherical designs are related to a class of reflection groups which are (in general dense) subgroups of orthogonal groups.

Point Lattices and Oscillating Recurrence Sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the following question: Which real sequences (a(n)) that satisfy a linear recurrence with constant coefficients are positive for sufficiently large n? We show that the answer is negative for both (a(n)) and (-a(n)), if the dominating characteristic roots in the representation of a(n) as a generalized power sum comprise either two pairs of conjugate complex roots or one negative real root and one pair of conjugate complex roots. The proof uses results from Diophantine approximation and the geometry of numbers. Concerning the case of a real positive dominating root we show what the answer to the question of positivity is for almost all values of the other dominating roots, provided that all dominating roots are simple.
