The saturation spectrum for antichains of subsets
Published in Order, Volume 40, pages 537-574, (2023) • View PublicationBIB
Extending a classical theorem of Sperner, we characterize the integers $m$ such that there exists a maximal antichain of size $m$ in the Boolean lattice $B_n$, that is, the power set of $[n]:=\{1,2,\dots,n\}$, ordered by inclusion. As an important ingredient in the proof, we initiate the study of an extension of the Kruskal-Katona theorem which is of independent interest. For given positive integers $t$ and $k$, we ask which integers $s$ have the property that there exists a family $\mathcal F$ of $k$-sets with $\lvert\mathcal F\rvert=t$ such that the shadow of $\mathcal F$ has size $s$, where the shadow of $\mathcal F$ is the collection of $(k-1)$-sets that are contained in at least one member of $\mathcal F$. We provide a complete answer for $t\leqslant k+1$. Moreover, we prove that the largest integer which is not the shadow size of any family of $k$-sets is $\sqrt 2k^{3/2}+\sqrt[4]{8}k^{5/4}+O(k)$.

An exact characterization of saturation for permutation matrices
Published in Combinatorial Theory, 3(1) (2023) • View PublicationBIB
A 0-1 matrix $M$ contains a 0-1 matrix pattern $P$ if we can obtain $P$ from $M$ by deleting rows and/or columns and turning arbitrary 1-entries into 0s. The saturation function $\mathrm{sat}(P,n)$ for a 0-1 matrix pattern $P$ indicates the minimum number of 1s in an $n \times n$ 0-1 matrix that does not contain $P$, but changing any 0-entry into a 1-entry creates an occurrence of $P$. Fulek and Keszegh recently showed that each pattern has a saturation function either in $O(1)$ or in $Θ(n)$. We fully classify the saturation functions of permutation matrices.

Permanent of random matrices from representation theory: moments, numerics, concentration, and comments on hardness of boson-sampling
Computing the distribution of permanents of random matrices has been an outstanding open problem for several decades. In quantum computing, "anti-concentration" of this distribution is an unproven input for the proof of hardness of the task of boson-sampling. We study permanents of random i.i.d. complex Gaussian matrices, and more broadly, submatrices of random unitary matrices. Using a hybrid representation-theoretic and combinatorial approach, we prove strong lower bounds for all moments of the permanent distribution. We provide substantial evidence that our bounds are close to being tight and constitute accurate estimates for the moments. Let $U(d)^{k\times k}$ be the distribution of $k\times k$ submatrices of $d\times d$ random unitary matrices, and $G^{k\times k}$ be the distribution of $k\times k$ complex Gaussian matrices. (1) Using the Schur-Weyl duality (or the Howe duality), we prove an expansion formula for the $2t$-th moment of $|Perm(M)|$ when $M$ is drawn from $U(d)^{k\times k}$ or $G^{k\times k}$. (2) We prove a surprising size-moment duality: the $2t$-th moment of the permanent of random $k\times k$ matrices is equal to the $2k$-th moment of the permanent of $t\times t$ matrices. (3) We design an algorithm to exactly compute high moments of the permanent of small matrices. (4) We prove lower bounds for arbitrary moments of permanents of matrices drawn from $G^{ k\times k}$ or $U(k)$, and conjecture that our lower bounds are close to saturation up to a small multiplicative error. (5) Assuming our conjectures, we use the large deviation theory to compute the tail of the distribution of log-permanent of Gaussian matrices for the first time. (6) We argue that it is unlikely that the permanent distribution can be uniquely determined from the integer moments and one may need to supplement the moment calculations with extra assumptions to prove the anti-concentration conjecture.
On saturation of Berge hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A hypergraph $H=(V(H), E(H))$ is a Berge copy of a graph $F$, if $V(F)\subset V(H)$ and there is a bijection $f:E(F)\rightarrow E(H)$ such that for any $e\in E(F)$ we have $e\subset f(e)$. A hypergraph is Berge-$F$-free if it does not contain any Berge copies of $F$. We address the saturation problem concerning Berge-$F$-free hypergraphs, i.e., what is the minimum number $sat_r(n,F)$ of hyperedges in an $r$-uniform Berge-$F$-free hypergraph $H$ with the property that adding any new hyperedge to $H$ creates a Berge copy of $F$. We prove that $sat_r(n,F)$ grows linearly in $n$ if $F$ is either complete multipartite or it possesses the following property: if $d_1\le d_2\le \dots \le d_{|V(F)|}$ is the degree sequence of $F$, then $F$ contains two adjacent vertices $u,v$ with $d_F(u)=d_1$, $d_F(v)=d_2$. In particular, the Berge-saturation number of regular graphs grows linearly in $n$.
Forbidden subposet problems in the grid

For posets $P$ and $Q$, extremal and saturation problems about weak and strong $P$-free subposets of $Q$ have been studied mostly in the case $Q$ is the Boolean poset $Q_n$, the poset of all subsets of an $n$-element set ordered by inclusion. In this paper, we study some instances of the problem with $Q$ being the grid, and its connections to the Boolean case and to the forbidden submatrix problem.

Generalized saturation problems for cliques, paths, and stars
A graph $G$ is $F$-saturated if it does not contain any copy of $F$, but the addition of any missing edge in $G$ creates at least one copy of $F$. Inspired by work of Alon and Shikhelman regarding a similar question for $F$-free graphs, Kritschgau, Methuku, Tait, and Timmons introduced the parameter of $\text{sat}_H(n,F)$ to denote the minimum number of copies of some subgraph $H$ in an $F$-saturated graph on $n$ vertices. In this paper, we address this generalized saturation problem with special focus on $\text{sat}_{K_r}(n,S_t)$ and $\text{sat}_{S_r}(n,S_t)$ This relates to recent work by Chakraborti and Loh regarding $\text{sat}_{K_r}(n,K_t)$ and by Ergemlidze, Methuku, Tait, and Timmons regarding $\text{sat}_{S_r}(n,K_t)$. We also provide some results regarding paths and arbitrary trees.

Stretched Newell-Littlewood coefficients
Published • View PublicationBIB
Newell-Littlewood coefficients $n_{μ,ν}^λ$ are the multiplicities occurring in the decomposition of products of universal characters of the orthogonal and symplectic groups. They may also be expressed, or even defined directly in terms of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, $c_{μ,ν}^λ$. Both sets of coefficients have stretched forms $c_{tμ,tν}^{tλ}$ and $n_{tμ,tν}^{tλ}$, where $tκ$ is the partition obtained by multiplying each part of the partition $κ$ by the integer $t$. It is known that $c_{tμ,tν}^{tλ}$ is a polynomial in $t$ and here it is shown that $n_{tμ,tν}^{tλ}$ is an Ehrhart quasi-polynomial in $t$ with minimum quasi-period at most $2$. The evaluation of $n_{tμ,tν}^{tλ}$ is effected both by deriving their generating function and by establishing a hive model analogous to that used for the calculation of $c_{tμ,tν}^{tλ}$. These two approaches lead to a whole battery of conjectures about the nature of the quasi-polynomials $n_{tμ,tν}^{tλ}$. These include both positivity, stability and saturation conjectures that are supported by a significant amount of data from a range of examples.

Matrix patterns with bounded saturation function
A 0-1 matrix $M$ contains a 0-1 matrix pattern $P$ if we can obtain $P$ from $M$ by deleting rows and/or columns and turning arbitrary 1-entries into 0s. The saturation function $\mathrm{sat}(P,n)$ for a 0-1 matrix pattern $P$ indicates the minimum number of 1s in a $n \times n$ 0-1 matrix that does not contain $P$, but changing any 0-entry into a 1-entry creates an occurrence of $P$. Fulek and Keszegh recently showed that the saturation function is either bounded or in $Θ(n)$. Building on their results, we find a large class of patterns with bounded saturation function, including both infinitely many permutation matrices and infinitely many non-permutation matrices.

Almost all permutation matrices have bounded saturation functions

Saturation problems for forbidden graphs have been a popular area of research for many decades, and recently Brualdi and Cao initiated the study of a saturation problem for 0-1 matrices. We say that 0-1 matrix $A$ is saturating for the forbidden 0-1 matrix $P$ if $A$ avoids $P$ but changing any zero to a one in $A$ creates a copy of $P$. Define $sat(n, P)$ to be the minimum possible number of ones in an $n \times n$ 0-1 matrix that is saturating for $P$. Fulek and Keszegh proved that for every 0-1 matrix $P$, either $sat(n, P) = O(1)$ or $sat(n, P) = Θ(n)$. They found two 0-1 matrices $P$ for which $sat(n, P) = O(1)$, as well as infinite families of 0-1 matrices $P$ for which $sat(n, P) = Θ(n)$. Their results imply that $sat(n, P) = Θ(n)$ for almost all $k \times k$ 0-1 matrices $P$. Fulek and Keszegh conjectured that there are many more 0-1 matrices $P$ such that $sat(n, P) = O(1)$ besides the ones they found, and they asked for a characterization of all permutation matrices $P$ such that $sat(n, P) = O(1)$. We affirm their conjecture by proving that almost all $k \times k$ permutation matrices $P$ have $sat(n, P) = O(1)$. We also make progress on the characterization problem, since our proof of the main result exhibits a family of permutation matrices with bounded saturation functions.
Saturation problems with regularity constraints

For a graph $F$, we say that another graph $G$ is $F$-saturated, if $G$ is $F$-free and adding any edge to $G$ would create a copy of $F$. We study for a given graph $F$ and integer $n$ whether there exists a regular $n$-vertex $F$-saturated graph, and if it does, what is the smallest number of edges of such a graph. We mainly focus on the case when $F$ is a complete graph and prove for example that there exists a $K_3$-saturated regular graph on $n$ vertices for every large enough $n$. We also study two relaxed versions of the problem: when we only require that no regular $F$-free supergraph of $G$ should exist or when we drop the $F$-free condition and only require that any newly added edge should create a new copy of $F$.

Saturation of Newton polytopes of type A and D cluster variables
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study Newton polytopes for cluster variables in cluster algebras $\mathcal{A}(Σ)$ of types A and D. A famous property of cluster algebras is the Laurent phenomenon: each cluster variable can be written as a Laurent polynomial in the cluster variables of the initial seed $Σ$. The cluster variable Newton polytopes are the Newton polytopes of these Laurent polynomials. We show that if $Σ$ has principal coefficients or boundary frozen variables, then all cluster variable Newton polytopes are saturated. We also characterize when these Newton polytopes are \emph{empty}; that is, when they have no non-vertex lattice points.

Saturation Numbers for Minors
The saturation number $\text{sat}(n,\mathcal{F})$ is the minimum number of edges in any graph which does not contain a member of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph, but will if any edge is added. We give a few upper and lower bounds for saturation numbers for minors. In particular, we shall show that certain Generalized Petersen Graphs are $K^r$-minor saturated for $6\le r\le 8$.

Saturation problems about forbidden $0$-$1$ submatrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
A $0$-$1$ matrix $M$ is saturating for a $0$-$1$ matrix $P$ if $M$ does not contain a submatrix that can be turned into $P$ by changing some $1$ entries to $0$ entries, and changing an arbitrary $0$ to $1$ in $M$ introduces such a submatrix in $M$. In saturation problems for $0$-$1$ matrices we are interested in estimating the minimum number of $1$ entries in an $m \times n$ matrix that is saturating for $P$, in terms of $m$ and $n$. In other words, we wish to give good estimates for the saturation function of $P$. Recently, Brualdi and Cao initiated the study of saturation problems in the context of $0$-$1$ matrices. We extend their work in several directions. We prove that every $0$-$1$ forbidden matrix has its saturation function either in $Θ(1)$ or $Θ(n)$ in the case when we restrict ourselves to square saturating matrices. Then we give a partial answer to a question posed by Brualdi and Cao about the saturation function of $J_k$, which is obtained from the identity matrix $I_k$ by putting the first row after the last row. Furthermore, we exhibit a $5\times 5$ permutation matrix with the saturation function bounded from the above by a fixed constant. We complement this result by identifying large classes of $0$-$1$ matrices with linear saturation function. Finally, we completely resolve the related semisaturation problem as far as the constant vs. linear dichotomy is concerned.

Guessing Numbers and Extremal Graph Theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a given number of colors, $s$, the guessing number of a graph is the (base $s$) logarithm of the cardinality of the largest family of colorings of the vertex set of the graph such that the color of each vertex can be determined from the colors of the vertices in its neighborhood. This quantity is related to problems in network coding, circuit complexity and graph entropy. We study the guessing number of graphs as a graph property in the context of classic extremal questions, and its relationship to the forbidden subgraph property. We find the extremal number with respect to the property of having guessing number $\leq a$, for fixed $a$. Furthermore, we find an upper bound on the saturation number for this property, and a method to construct further saturated graphs that lie between these two extremes. We show that, for a fixed number of colors, bounding the guessing number is equivalent to forbidding a finite set of subgraphs.

Two problems in graph Ramsey theory
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 104 (2022), 103552 • View PublicationBIB
We study two problems in graph Ramsey theory. In the early 1970's, Erdős and O'Neil considered a generalization of Ramsey numbers. Given integers $n,k,s$ and $t$ with $n \ge k \ge s,t \ge 2$, they asked for the least integer $N=f_k(n,s,t)$ such that in any red-blue coloring of the $k$-subsets of $\{1, 2,\ldots, N\}$, there is a set of size $n$ such that either each of its $s$-subsets is contained in some red $k$-subset, or each of its $t$-subsets is contained in some blue $k$-subset. Erdős and O'Neil found an exact formula for $f_k(n,s,t)$ when $k\ge s+t-1$. In the arguably more interesting case where $k=s+t-2$, they showed $2^{-\binom{k}{2}}n<\log f_k(n,s,t)<2n$ for sufficiently large $n$. Our main result closes the gap between these lower and upper bounds, determining the logarithm of $f_{s+t-2}(n,s,t)$ up to a multiplicative factor. Recently, Damásdi, Keszegh, Malec, Tompkins, Wang and Zamora initiated the investigation of saturation problems in Ramsey theory, wherein one seeks to minimize $n$ such that there exists an $r$-edge-coloring of $K_n$ for which any extension of this to an $r$-edge-coloring of $K_{n+1}$ would create a new monochromatic copy of $K_k$. We obtain essentially sharp bounds for this problem.
Threshold for weak saturation stability

We study the weak $K_s$-saturation number of the Erdős--Rényi random graph $\mathbbmsl{G}(n, p)$, denoted by $\mathrm{wsat}(\mathbbmsl{G}(n, p), K_s)$, where $K_s$ is the complete graph on $s$ vertices. Korándi and Sudakov in 2017 proved that the weak $K_s$-saturation number of $K_n$ is stable, in the sense that it remains the same after removing edges with constant probability. In this paper, we prove that there exists a threshold for this stability property and give upper and lower bounds on the threshold. This generalizes the result of Korándi and Sudakov. A general upper bound for $\mathrm{wsat}(\mathbbmsl{G}(n, p), K_s)$ is also provided.
VC-saturated set systems

The well-known Sauer lemma states that a family $\mathcal{F}\subseteq 2^{[n]}$ of VC-dimension at most $d$ has size at most $\sum_{i=0}^d\binom{n}{i}$. We obtain both random and explicit constructions to prove that the corresponding saturation number, i.e., the size of the smallest maximal family with VC-dimension $d\ge 2$, is at most $4^{d+1}$, and thus is independent of $n$.
Saturation problems in the Ramsey theory of graphs, posets and point sets
In 1964, Erdős, Hajnal and Moon introduced a saturation version of Turán's classical theorem in extremal graph theory. In particular, they determined the minimum number of edges in a $K_r$-free, $n$-vertex graph with the property that the addition of any further edge yields a copy of $K_r$. We consider analogues of this problem in other settings. We prove a saturation version of the Erdős-Szekeres theorem about monotone subsequences and saturation versions of some Ramsey-type theorems on graphs and Dilworth-type theorems on posets. We also consider semisaturation problems, wherein we allow the family to have the forbidden configuration, but insist that any addition to the family yields a new copy of the forbidden configuration. In this setting, we prove a semisaturation version of the Erdős-Szekeres theorem on convex $k$-gons, as well as multiple semisaturation theorems for sequences and posets.

A lower bound on the saturation number, and graphs for which it is sharp
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $H$ be a fixed graph. We say that a graph $G$ is $H$-saturated if it has no subgraph isomorphic to $H$, but the addition of any edge to $G$ results in an $H$-subgraph. The saturation number $\mathrm{sat}(H,n)$ is the minimum number of edges in an $H$-saturated graph on $n$ vertices. Kászonyi and Tuza, in 1986, gave a general upper bound on the saturation number of a graph $H$, but a nontrivial lower bound has remained elusive. In this paper we give a general lower bound on $\mathrm{sat}(H,n)$ and prove that it is asymptotically sharp (up to an additive constant) on a large class of graphs. This class includes all threshold graphs and many graphs for which the saturation number was previously determined exactly. Our work thus gives an asymptotic common generalization of several earlier results. The class also includes disjoint unions of cliques, allowing us to address an open problem of Faudree, Ferrara, Gould, and Jacobson.

Weak saturation numbers of complete bipartite graphs in the clique

The notion of weak saturation was introduced by Bollobás in 1968. Let $F$ and $H$ be graphs. A spanning subgraph $G \subseteq F$ is weakly $(F,H)$-saturated if it contains no copy of $H$ but there exists an ordering $e_1,\ldots,e_t$ of $E(F)\setminus E(G)$ such that for each $i \in [t]$, the graph $G \cup \{e_1,\ldots,e_i\}$ contains a copy $H'$ of $H$ such that $e_i \in H'$. Define $wsat(F,H)$ to be the minimum number of edges in a weakly $(F,H)$-saturated graph. In this paper, we prove for all $t \ge 2$ and $n \ge 3t-3$, that $wsat(K_n,K_{t,t}) = (t-1)(n + 1 - t/2)$, and we determine the value of $wsat(K_n,K_{t-1,t})$ as well. For fixed $2 \le s < t$, we also obtain bounds on $wsat(K_n,K_{s,t})$ that are asymptotically tight.
