Fair division and generalizations of Sperner- and KKM-type results
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math. 32(1), 591-610 (2018) • View PublicationBIB
We treat problems of fair division, their various interconnections, and their relations to Sperner's lemma and the KKM theorem as well as their variants. We prove extensions of Alon's necklace splitting result in certain regimes and relate it to hyperplane mass partitions. We show the existence of fair cake division and rental harmony in the sense of Su even in the absence of full information. Furthermore, we extend Sperner's lemma and the KKM theorem to (colorful) quantitative versions for polytopes and pseudomanifolds. For simplicial polytopes our results turn out to be improvements over the earlier work of De Loera, Peterson, and Su on a polytopal version of Sperner's lemma. Moreover, our results extend the work of Musin on quantitative Sperner-type results for PL manifolds.
A generalized lower bound theorem for balanced manifolds
Published • View PublicationBIB
A simplicial complex of dimension $d-1$ is said to be balanced if its graph is $d$-colorable. Juhnke-Kubitzke and Murai proved an analogue of the generalized lower bound theorem for balanced simplicial polytopes. We establish a generalization of their result to balanced triangulations of closed homology manifolds and balanced triangulations of orientable homology manifolds with boundary under an additional assumption that all proper links of these triangulations have the weak Lefschetz property. As a corollary, we show that if $Δ$ is an arbitrary balanced triangulation of any closed homology manifold of dimension $d-1 \geq 3$, then $2h_2(Δ) - (d-1)h_1(Δ) \geq 4{d \choose 2}(\tildeβ_1(Δ)-\tildeβ_0(Δ))$, thus verifying a conjecture by Klee and Novik. To prove these results we develop the theory of flag $h''$-vectors.
Lefschetz properties of balanced 3-polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study Lefschetz properties of Artinian reductions of Stanley-Reisner rings of balanced simplicial $3$-polytopes. A $(d-1)$-dimensional simplicial complex is said to be balanced if its graph is $d$-colorable. If a simplicial complex is balanced, then its Stanley-Reisner ring has a special system of parameters induced by the coloring. We prove that the Artinian reduction of the Stanley-Reisner ring of a balanced simplicial $3$-polytope with respect to this special system of parameters has the strong Lefschetz property if the characteristic of the base field is not two or three. Moreover, we characterize $(2,1)$-balanced simplicial polytopes, i.e., polytopes with exactly one red vertex and two blue vertices in each facet, such that an analogous property holds. In fact, we show that this is the case if and only if the induced graph on the blue vertices satisfies a Laman-type combinatorial condition.

The Dehn-Sommerville Relations and the Catalan Matroid
Published • View PublicationBIB
The $f$-vector of a $d$-dimensional polytope $P$ stores the number of faces of each dimension. When $P$ is simplicial the Dehn--Sommerville relations condense the $f$-vector into the $g$-vector, which has length $\lceil{\frac{d+1}{2}}\rceil$. Thus, to determine the $f$-vector of $P$, we only need to know approximately half of its entries. This raises the question: Which $(\lceil{\frac{d+1}{2}}\rceil)$-subsets of the $f$-vector of a general simplicial polytope are sufficient to determine the whole $f$-vector? We prove that the answer is given by the bases of the Catalan matroid.
Almost simplicial polytopes I. The lower and upper bound theorems
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study $n$-vertex $d$-dimensional polytopes with at most one nonsimplex facet with, say, $d+s$ vertices, called {\it almost simplicial polytopes}. We provide tight lower and upper bound theorems for these polytopes as functions of $d,n$ and $s$, thus generalizing the classical Lower Bound Theorem by Barnette and Upper Bound Theorem by McMullen, which treat the case of $s=0$. We characterize the minimizers and provide examples of maximizers, for any $d$. Our construction of maximizers is a generalization of cyclic polytopes, based on a suitable variation of the moment curve, and is of independent interest.
A Geometric Lower Bound Theorem

We resolve a conjecture of Kalai relating approximation theory of convex bodies by simplicial polytopes to the face numbers and primitive Betti numbers of these polytopes and their toric varieties. The proof uses higher notions of chordality. Further, for C^2-convex bodies, asymptotically tight lower bounds on the g-numbers of the approximating polytopes are given, in terms of their Hausdorff distance from the convex body.

Balanced generalized lower bound inequality for simplicial polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
A remarkable and important property of face numbers of simplicial polytopes is the generalized lower bound inequality, which says that the $h$-numbers of any simplicial polytope are unimodal. Recently, for balanced simplicial $d$-polytopes, that is simplicial $d$-polytopes whose underlying graphs are $d$-colorable, Klee and Novik proposed a balanced analogue of this inequality, that is stronger than just unimodality. The aim of this article is to prove this conjecture of Klee and Novik. For this, we also show a Lefschetz property for rank-selected subcomplexes of balanced simplicial polytopes and thereby obtain new inequalities for their $h$-numbers.

Thirty-five years and counting
It has been 35 years since Stanley proved that f-vectors of boundaries of simplicial polytopes satisfy McMullen's conjectured g-conditions. Since then one of the outstanding questions in the realm of face enumeration is whether or not Stanley's proof could be extended to larger classes of spheres. Here we hope to give an overview of various attempts to accomplish this and why we feel this is so important. In particular, we will see a strong connection to f-vectors of manifolds and pseudomanifolds. Along the way we have included several previously unpublished results involving how the g-conjecture relates to bistellar moves and small g_2, the topology and combinatorics of stacked manifolds introduced independently by Bagchi and Datta, and Murai and Nevo, and counterexamples to over optimistic generalizations of the g-theorem.

Möbius Polynomials of Face Posets of Convex Polytopes
Published in Communications in Algebra 2016 44(11):4945-4972 • View PublicationBIB
The Möbius polynomial is an invariant of ranked posets, closely related to the Möbius function. In this paper, we study the Möbius polynomial of face posets of convex polytopes. We present formulas for computing the Möbius polynomial of the face poset of a pyramid or a prism over an existing polytope, or of the gluing of two or more polytopes in terms of the Möbius polynomials of the original polytopes. We also present general formulas for calculating Möbius polynomials of face posets of simplicial polytopes and of Eulerian posets in terms of their $f$-vectors and some additional constraints.
Universality theorems for inscribed polytopes and Delaunay triangulations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that every primary basic semialgebraic set is homotopy equivalent to the set of inscribed realizations (up to Möbius transformation) of a polytope. If the semialgebraic set is moreover open, then, in addition, we prove that (up to homotopy) it is a retract of the realization space of some inscribed neighborly (and simplicial) polytope. We also show that all algebraic extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$ are needed to coordinatize inscribed polytopes. These statements show that inscribed polytopes exhibit the Mnëv universality phenomenon. Via stereographic projections, these theorems have a direct translation to universality theorems for Delaunay subdivisions. In particular, our results imply that the realizability problem for Delaunay triangulations is polynomially equivalent to the existential theory of the reals.

Embedding Stacked Polytopes on a Polynomial-Size Grid
Published • View PublicationBIB
A stacking operation adds a $d$-simplex on top of a facet of a simplicial $d$-polytope while maintaining the convexity of the polytope. A stacked $d$-polytope is a polytope that is obtained from a $d$-simplex and a series of stacking operations. We show that for a fixed $d$ every stacked $d$-polytope with $n$ vertices can be realized with nonnegative integer coordinates. The coordinates are bounded by $O(n^{2\log(2d)})$, except for one axis, where the coordinates are bounded by $O(n^{3\log(2d)})$. The described realization can be computed with an easy algorithm. The realization of the polytopes is obtained with a lifting technique which produces an embedding on a large grid. We establish a rounding scheme that places the vertices on a sparser grid, while maintaining the convexity of the embedding.

Noncrossing sets and a Graßmann associahedron
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma, 5 (2017), e5 • View PublicationBIB
We study a natural generalization of the noncrossing relation between pairs of elements in [n] to k-tuples in [n] that was first considered by Petersen, Pylyavskyy, Speyer (2010). We give an alternative approach to their result that the flag simplicial complex on $\binom{[n]}{k}$ induced by this relation is a regular, unimodular and flag triangulation of the order polytope of the poset given by the product $[k]\times[n-k]$ of two chains (also called Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope), and that it is the join of a simplex and a sphere (that is, it is a Gorenstein triangulation). We then observe that this already implies the existence of a flag simplicial polytope generalizing the dual associahedron, whose Stanley-Reisner ideal is an initial ideal of the Graßmann-Plücker ideal, while previous constructions of such a polytope did not guarantee flagness nor reduced to the dual associahedron for k=2. On our way we provide general results about order polytopes and their triangulations. We call the simplicial complex the noncrossing complex, and the polytope derived from it the dual Graßmann associahedron. We extend results of Petersen, Pylyavskyy, Speyer (2010) showing that the non-crossing complex and the Graßmann associahedron naturally reflect the relations between Graßmannians with different parameters, in particular the isomorphism $G_{k,n} \cong G_{n-k,n}$. Moreover, our approach allows us to show that the adjacency graph of the noncrossing complex admits a natural acyclic orientation that allows us to define a Graßmann-Tamari order on maximal noncrossing families. Finally, we look at the precise relation of the noncrossing complex and the weak separability complex of Leclerc, Zelevinsky (1998) and show that the weak separability complex is the cyclically invariant part of the noncrossibg complex.

On the dual graph of Cohen-Macaulay algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a projective algebraic set X, its dual graph G(X) is the graph whose vertices are the irreducible components of X and whose edges connect components that intersect in codimension one. Hartshorne's connectedness theorem says that if (the coordinate ring of) X is Cohen-Macaulay, then G(X) is connected. We present two quantitative variants of Hartshorne's result: 1) If X is a Gorenstein subspace arrangement, then G(X) is r-connected, where r is the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of X. (The bound is best possible; for coordinate arrangements, it yields an algebraic extension of Balinski's theorem for simplicial polytopes.) 2) If X is a canonically embedded arrangement of lines no three of which meet in the same point, then the diameter of the graph G(X) is not larger than the codimension of X. (The bound is sharp; for coordinate arrangements, it yields an algebraic expansion on the recent combinatorial result that the Hirsch conjecture holds for flag normal simplicial complexes.)

The universality theorem for neighborly polytopes

In this note, we prove that every open primary basic semialgebraic set is stably equivalent to the realization space of an even-dimensional neighborly polytope. This in particular provides the final step for Mnëv's proof of the universality theorem for simplicial polytopes.

A Quantitative Steinitz Theorem for Plane Triangulations
We give a new proof of Steinitz's classical theorem in the case of plane triangulations, which allows us to obtain a new general bound on the grid size of the simplicial polytope realizing a given triangulation, subexponential in a number of special cases. Formally, we prove that every plane triangulation $G$ with $n$ vertices can be embedded in $\mathbb{R}^2$ in such a way that it is the vertical projection of a convex polyhedral surface. We show that the vertices of this surface may be placed in a $4n^3 \times 8n^5 \times ζ(n)$ integer grid, where $ζ(n) \leq (500 n^8)^{τ(G)}$ and $τ(G)$ denotes the shedding diameter of $G$, a quantity defined in the paper.

Simplicial complexes Alexander dual to boundaries of polytopes
In the paper we treat Gale diagrams in a combinatorial way. The interpretation allows to describe simplicial complexes which are Alexander dual to boundaries of simplicial polytopes and, more generally, to nerve-complexes of general polytopes. This technique and recent results of N.Yu.Erokhovets are combined to prove the following: Buchstaber invariant $s(P)$ of a convex polytope equals 1 if and only if $P$ is a pyramid. In general, we describe a procedure to construct polytopes with $s_R(P)>k$. The construction has purely combinatorial consequences. We also apply Gale duality to the study of bigraded Betti numbers and f-vectors of polytopes.

The rigidity of infinite graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A rigidity theory is developed for the Euclidean and non-Euclidean placements of countably infinite simple graphs in R^d with respect to the classical l^p norms, for d>1 and 1<p<\infty. Generalisations are obtained for the Laman and Henneberg combinatorial characterisations of generic infinitesimal rigidity for finite graphs in the Euclidean plane. Also Tay's multi-graph characterisation of the rigidity of generic finite body-bar frameworks in d-dimensional Euclidean space is generalised to the non-Euclidean l^p norms and to countably infinite graphs. For all dimensions and norms it is shown that a generically rigid countable simple graph is the direct limit of an inclusion tower of finite graphs for which the inclusions satisfy a relative rigidity property. For d>2 a countable graph which is rigid for generic placements in R^d may fail the stronger property of sequential rigidity, while for d=2 the equivalence with sequential rigidity is obtained from the generalised Laman characterisations. Applications are given to the flexibility of non-Euclidean convex polyhedra and to the infinitesimal and continuous rigidity of compact infinitely-faceted simplicial polytopes.

Neighborly and almost neighborly configurations, and their duals
This thesis presents new applications of Gale duality to the study of polytopes, point configurations and oriented matroids with extremal combinatorial properties. The first part of the thesis explores construction techniques for neighborly polytopes and oriented matroids. First, we provide a new interpretation of Shemer's classical Sewing Construction for neighborly polytopes in terms of lexicographic extensions of oriented matroids. This allows us to provide a simplified proof and to generalize it to oriented matroids in two ways: the Extended Sewing Construction and the Gale Sewing Construction. Estimating the number of polytopes constructed with the later, we can provide new lower bounds for the number of combinatorial types of neighborly polytopes that even improve the current best bounds for the number of polytopes. The combination of both new techniques also allows us to construct many non-realizable neighborly oriented matroids. The degree of a point configuration is the maximal codimension of its interior faces. The second part of the thesis presents various results on the combinatorial structure of point configurations whose degree is small compared to their dimension; specifically, those whose degree is smaller than [(d+1)/2], the degree of neighborly polytopes. The study of this problem comes motivated by Ehrhart theory, where a notion equivalent to the degree - for lattice polytopes - has been widely studied during the last years. In addition, the study of the degree is also related to the Generalized Lower Bound Theorem for simplicial polytopes, with Cayley polytopes and with Tverberg theory. Among other results, we present a complete combinatorial classification for point configurations of degree 1. Moreover, we show combinatorial restrictions for configurations of small degree in terms of the novel concepts of weak Cayley configurations and codegree decompositions.

Combinatorics of flag simplicial 3-polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the focus of this paper is the operation of edge contraction. One can show that simplicial 3-polytope is flag iff contraction of any its edge gives simplicial 3-polytope. Our main result states that any flag simplicial 3-polytope can be reduced to octahedron by sequence of edge contractions. Using this operation we introduce a partial order on the set of flag simplicial 3-polytopes and study Hasse graph of corresponding poset. We estimate input and output degrees of vertices of this Hasse graph.
