Power series expansion of Wilf function
In the research, with aid of the Faà di Bruno formula, be virtue of several identities for the Bell polynomials of the second kind, with help of two combinatorial identities, by means of the (logarithmically) complete monotonicity of generating functions of several integer sequences, and in light of the Wronski theorem, the author \begin{enumerate} \item establishes the Taylor power series expansions of several functions involving the inverse (hyperbolic) tangent function; \item finds out the Maclaurin power series expansion of the Wilf function, which is a composite of the inverse tangent, square root, and exponential functions; \item expresses the coefficients in the Maclaurin power series expansion of the Wilf function in terms of the Stirling numbers of the second kind; \item analyzes some properties, including generating functions, limits, positivity, monotonicity, and logarithmic convexity, of the coefficients in the Maclaurin power series expansion of the Wilf function; \item derives a closed-form formula for a sequence of special values of the Gauss hypergeometric function; \item discovers a closed-form formula for a sequence of special values of the Bell polynomials of the second kind; \item presents several infinite series representations of the circular constant and other sequences; \item recovers an asymptotic rational approximation to the circular constant; \item and connects several integer sequences by determinants. \end{enumerate}

In the paper, by virtue of expansions of two finite products of finitely many square sums, with the aid of series expansions of composite functions of (hyperbolic) sine and cosine functions with inverse sine and cosine functions, and in the light of properties of partial Bell polynomials, the author establishes Taylor's series expansions of real powers of two functions containing squares of inverse (hyperbolic) cosine functions in terms of the Stirling numbers of the first kind, presents an explicit formula of specific partial Bell polynomials at a sequence of derivatives of a function containing the square of inverse cosine function, derives several combinatorial identities involving the Stirling numbers of the first kind, demonstrates several series representations of the circular constant Pi and its real powers, recovers series expansions of positive integer powers of inverse (hyperbolic) sine functions in terms of the Stirling numbers of the first kind, and also deduces other useful, meaningful, and significant conclusions.

Exotic series with Bernoulli, harmonic, Catalan, and Stirling numbers
In this paper, we present a formula for generating various exotic series in the spirit of Ovidiu Furdui and Alina Sintamarian. Our new series (evaluated in closed form) involve Bernoulli, harmonic, and Catalan numbers. Also Stirling numbers of the second kind, other special numbers, and exponential polynomials. The results include series identities with Laguerre polynomials and derangement polynomials.

The ordered Bell numbers as weighted sums of odd or even Stirling numbers of the second kind
For the Stirling numbers of the second kind $S(n,k)$ and the ordered Bell numbers $B(n)$, we prove the identity $\sum_{k=1}^{n/2} S(n,2k)(2k-1)! = B(n-1)$. An analogous identity holds for the sum over odd $k$'s.

This paper presents a number of identities for Dirichlet series and series with Stirling numbers of the first kind. As coefficients for the Dirichlet series we use Cauchy numbers of the first and second kinds, hyperharmonic numbers, derangement numbers, binomial coefficients, central binomial coefficients, and Catalan numbers.

On the Left Connected Subalgebra of the Descent Algebra of a Coxeter Group of Classical Type
Published • View PublicationBIB
A Coxeter group of classical type $A_n$, $B_n$ or $D_n$ contains a chain of subgroups of the same type. We show that intersections of conjugates of these subgroups are again of the same type, and make precise in which sense and to what extent this property is exclusive to the classical types of Coxeter groups. As the main tool for the proof we use Solomon's descent algebra. Using Stirling numbers, we express certain basis elements of the descent algebra as polynomials and derive explicit multiplication formulas for a commutative subalgebra of the descent algebra.

Derivatives and Integrals of Polynomials Associated with Integer Partitions
Published in Journal of Integer Sequences, Vol. 25 (2022), Article 22.5.1 • Search Publication
Integer partitions express the different ways that a positive integer may be written as a sum of positive integers. Here we explore the analytic properties of a new polynomial $f_λ(x)$ that we call the partition polynomial for the partition $λ$, with the aim to learn new properties of partitions. We prove a recursive formula for the derivatives of $f_λ(x)$ involving Stirling numbers of the second kind, show that the set of integrals from 0 to 1 of a normalized version of $f_λ(x)$ is dense in $[0,1/2]$, pose a few open questions, and formulate a conjecture relating the integral to the length of the partition. We also provide specific examples throughout to support our speculation that an in-depth analysis of partition polynomials could further strengthen our understanding of partitions.

On Expected Face Numbers of Random Beta and Beta' Polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
The random beta polytope is defined as the convex hull of $n$ independent random points with the density proportional to $(1-\|x\|^2)^β$ on the $d$-dimensional unit ball, where $β>-1$ is a parameter. Similarly, the random beta' polytope is defined as the convex hull of $n$ independent random points with the density proportional to $(1+\|x\|^2)^{-β}$ on $\mathbb R^d$, where $β>\frac d2$. In a previous work [Angles of random simplices and face numbers of random polytopes, Adv. Math., 380 (2021), 107612], we established exact and explicit formulae for the expected $f$-vectors of these random polytopes in terms of certain definite integrals. In the present paper, we use purely algebraic manipulations to derive several identities for these integrals which yield alternative formulae for the expected $f$-vectors. Similar algebraic manipulations apply to Stirling numbers and yield the following identity: $$ \sum_{s=0}^k \genfrac{\{}{\}}{0pt}{}{n-s}{d-s} (d-s) \genfrac{[}{]}{0pt}{}{d-s}{k-s} = \sum_{s=0}^k (-1)^s \genfrac{\{}{\}}{0pt}{}{n-s}{d} \genfrac{[}{]}{0pt}{}{d+1}{k-s} = \sum_{s=0}^{d-k} (-1)^s \genfrac{\{}{\}}{0pt}{}{n+1}{d-s} \genfrac{[}{]}{0pt}{}{d-s}{k}. $$
Permutations of point sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$
Given a set $S$ consisting of $n$ points in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and one or two vantage points, we study the number of orderings of $S$ induced by measuring the distance (for one vantage point) or the average distance (for two vantage points) from the vantage point(s) to the points of $S$ as the vantage points move through $\mathbb{R}^d.$ With one vantage point, a theorem of Good and Tideman \cite{MR505547} shows the maximum number of orderings is a sum of unsigned Stirling numbers of the first kind. We show that the minimum value in all dimensions is $2n-2,$ achieved by $n$ equally spaced points on a line. We investigate special configurations that achieve intermediate numbers of orderings in the one--dimensional and two--dimensional cases. We also treat the case when the points are on the sphere $S^2,$ connecting spherical and planar configurations. We briefly consider an application using weights suggested by an application to social choice theory. We conclude with several open problems that we believe deserve further study.

$(p, q)$-analogues of the generalized Touchard polynomials and Stirling numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we introduce a $(p, q)$-deformed analogues of the generalized Touchard polynomials and Stirling numbers, the post-quantum analogues of the $q$-deformed generalized Touchard polynomials and Stirling numbers. The connection between these deformations is established. A recurrence relation for the $(p, q)$-deformed generalized Touchard polynomials is expounded, elucidating a $(p, q)$-deformation of Spivey's relation.

Cyclic and Linear Graph Partitions and Normal Ordering
The Stirling number of a simple graph is the number of partitions of its vertex set into a specific number of non-empty independent sets. In 2015, Engbers et al. showed that the coefficients in the normal ordering of a word $w$ in the alphabet $\{x,D\}$ subject to the relation $Dx=xD+1$ are equal to the Stirling number of certain graphs constructed from $w$. In this paper, we introduce graphical versions of the Stirling numbers of the first kind and the Lah numbers and show how they occur as coefficients in other normal ordering settings. Identities involving their $q$-analogues are also obtained.

All-orders asymptotics of tensor model observables from symmetries of restricted partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The counting of the dimension of the space of $U(N) \times U(N) \times U(N)$ polynomial invariants of a complex $3$-index tensor as a function of degree $n$ is known in terms of a sum of squares of Kronecker coefficients. For $n \le N$, the formula can be expressed in terms of a sum of symmetry factors of partitions of $n$ denoted $Z_3(n)$. We derive the large $n$ all-orders asymptotic formula for $ Z_3(n)$ making contact with high order results previously obtained numerically. The derivation relies on the dominance in the sum, of partitions with many parts of length $1$. The dominance of other small parts in restricted partition sums leads to related asymptotic results. The result for the $3$-index tensor observables gives the large $n$ asymptotic expansion for the counting of bipartite ribbon graphs with $n$ edges, and for the dimension of the associated Kronecker permutation centralizer algebra. We explain how the different terms in the asymptotics are associated with probability distributions over ribbon graphs. The large $n$ dominance of small parts also leads to conjectured formulae for the asymptotics of invariants for general $d$-index tensors. The coefficients of $ 1/n$ in these expansions involve Stirling numbers of the second kind along with restricted partition sums.

On the number of words with restrictions on the number of symbols

We show that, in an alphabet of $n$ symbols, the number of words of length $n$ whose number of different symbols is away from $(1-1/e)n$, which is the value expected by the Poisson distribution, has exponential decay in $n$. We use Laplace's method for sums and known bounds of Stirling numbers of the second kind. We express our result in terms of inequalities.

Lah distribution: Stirling numbers, records on compositions, and convex hulls of high-dimensional random walks
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $ξ_1,ξ_2,\ldots$ be a sequence of independent copies of a random vector in $\mathbb R^d$ having an absolutely continuous distribution. Consider a random walk $S_i:=ξ_1+\cdots+ξ_i$, and let $C_{n,d}:=\text{conv}(0,S_1,S_2,\ldots,S_n)$ be the convex hull of the first $n+1$ points it has visited. The polytope $C_{n,d}$ is called $k$-neighborly if for every indices $0\leq i_0 <\cdots < i_k\leq n$ the convex hull of the $k+1$ points $S_{i_0},\ldots, S_{i_k}$ is a $k$-dimensional face of $C_{n,d}$. We study the probability that $C_{n,d}$ is $k$-neighborly in various high-dimensional asymptotic regimes, i.e. when $n$, $d$, and possibly also $k$ diverge to $\infty$. There is an explicit formula for the expected number of $k$-dimensional faces of $C_{n,d}$ which involves Stirling numbers of both kinds. Motivated by this formula, we introduce a distribution, called the Lah distribution, and study its properties. In particular, we provide a combinatorial interpretation of the Lah distribution in terms of random compositions and records, and explicitly compute its factorial moments. Limit theorems which we prove for the Lah distribution imply neighborliness properties of $C_{n,d}$. This yields a new class of random polytopes exhibiting phase transitions parallel to those discovered by Vershik and Sporyshev, Donoho and Tanner for random projections of regular simplices and crosspolytopes.

Multiple harmonic sums $\mathcal{H}_{\lbrace s\rbrace^{2l}=1;p-1}$ modulo $p^4$ and applications
Wilson's theorem for the factorial got generalized to the moduli $p^2$ in 1900 and $p^3$ in 2000 by J.W.L. Glaisher and Z-H. Sun respectively. This paper which studies more generally the multiple harmonic sums $\mathcal{H}_{\lbrace s\rbrace^{2l}=1;p-1},2\leq 2l\leq p-1$ modulo $p^4$ in association with the Stirling numbers $\left[\begin{array}{l}\;\;\;p\\2s-1\end{array}\right], 2\leq 2s\leq p-1$ modulo $p^4$ is concerned with establishing a generalization of Wilson, Glaisher and Sun's results to the modulus $p^4$. We also break p-residues of convolutions of three divided Bernoulli numbers of respective orders $p-1$, $p-3$ and $p-5$ into smaller pieces and generalize some results of Sun for some of the generalized harmonic numbers of order $p-1$ modulo $p^4$.

Stirling numbers with level $2$ and poly-Bernoulli numbers with level $2$
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we introduce poly-Bernoulli numbers with level $2$, related to the Stirling numbers of the second kind with level $2$, and study several properties of poly-Bernoulli numbers with level $2$ from their expressions, relations, and congruences. Poly-Bernoulli numbers with level $2$ have strong connections with poly-Cauchy numbers with level $2$. In a special case, we can determine the denominators of Bernoulli numbers with level $2$ by showing a von Staudt-Clausen like theorem.

Similar results are obtained with series involving Stirling numbers of the first kind. We focus on several particular cases which give new closed forms for Euler sums of hyperharmonic numbers and products of hyperharmonic and harmonic numbers.

Stirling number and periodic points
Published in Acta Arithmetica, 201 (2021), 421-435 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the notion of almost realizability, an arithmetic generalization of realizability for integer sequences, which is the property of counting periodic points for some map. We characterize the intersection between the set of Stirling sequences (of both the first and the second kind) and the set of almost realizable sequences.
