Log-concavity with respect to the number of orbits for infinite tuples of commuting permutations
Let $A(p,n,k)$ be the number of $p$-tuples of commuting permutations of $n$ elements whose permutation action results in exactly $k$ orbits or connected components. We formulate the conjecture that, for every fixed $p$ and $n$, the $A(p,n,k)$ form a log-concave sequence with respect to $k$. For $p=1$ this is a well known property of unsigned Stirling numbers of the first kind. As the $p=2$ case, our conjecture includes a previous one by Heim and Neuhauser, which strengthens a unimodality conjecture for the Nekrasov-Okounkov hook length polynomials. In this article, we prove the $p=\infty$ case of our conjecture. We start from an expression for the $A(p,n,k)$ which follows from an identity by Bryan and Fulman, obtained in the their study of orbifold higher equivariant Euler characteristics. We then derive the $p\rightarrow\infty$ asymptotics. The last step essentially amounts to the log-concavity in $k$ of a generalized Turán number, namely, the maximum product of $k$ positive integers whose sum is $n$.
Diagonal operators, $q$-Whittaker functions and rook theory
We discuss the problem posed by Bender, Coley, Robbins and Rumsey of enumerating the number of subspaces which have a given profile with respect to a linear operator over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. We solve this problem in the case where the operator is diagonalizable. The solution leads us to a new class of polynomials $b_{μν}(q)$ indexed by pairs of integer partitions. These polynomials have several interesting specializations and can be expressed as positive sums over semistandard tableaux. We present a new correspondence between set partitions and semistandard tableaux. A close analysis of this correspondence reveals the existence of several new set partition statistics which generate the polynomials $b_{μν}(q)$; each such statistic arises from a Mahonian statistic on multiset permutations. The polynomials $b_{μν}(q)$ are also given a description in terms of coefficients in the monomial expansion of $q$-Whittaker symmetric functions which are specializations of Macdonald polynomials. We express the Touchard--Riordan generating polynomial for chord diagrams by number of crossings in terms of $q$-Whittaker functions. We also introduce a class of $q$-Stirling numbers defined in terms of the polynomials $b_{μν}(q)$ and present connections with $q$-rook theory in the spirit of Garsia and Remmel.

Ordering identities in the Weyl-Heisenberg algebra generated by single-mode boson operators are investigated. A boson string composed of creation and annihilation operators can be expanded as a linear combination of other such strings, the simplest example being a normal ordering. The case when each string contains only one annihilation operator is already combinatorially nontrivial. Two kinds of expansion are derived: (i) that of a power of a string $Ω$ in lower powers of another string $Ω'$, and (ii) that of a power of $Ω$ in twisted versions of the same power of $Ω'$. The expansion coefficients are shown to be, respectively, generalized Stirling numbers of Hsu and Shiue, and certain generalized Eulerian numbers. Many examples are given. These combinatorial numbers are binomial transforms of each other, and their theory is developed, emphasizing schemes for computing them: summation formulas, Graham-Knuth-Patashnik (GKP) triangular recurrences, terminating hypergeometric series, and closed-form expressions. The results on the first type of expansion subsume a number of previous results on the normal ordering of boson strings.
Stirling Decomposition of Graph Homology in Genus 1
We prove that commutative graph homology in genus $g=1$ with $n\geq 3$ markings has a direct sum decomposition whose summands have rank given by Stirling numbers of the first kind. These summands are computed as the homology of complexes of certain decorated trees. This paper was written with a non-expert audience in mind, and an emphasis is placed on an elementary combinatorial description of these decorated tree complexes.
Semi-simplicial combinatorics of cyclinders and subdivisions
In this work, we analyze the combinatorial properties of cylinders and subdivisions of augmented semi-simplicial sets. These constructions are obtained as particular cases of a certain action from a co-semi-simplicial set on an augmented semi-simplicial set. We also consider cylinders and subdivision operators in the algebraic setting of augmented sequences of integers. These operators are defined either by taking an action of matrices on sequences of integers (using binomial matrices) or by taking the simple product of sequences and matrices. We compare both the geometric and algebraic contexts using the sequential cardinal functor $|\cdot|$, which associates the augmented sequence $|X|=(|X_n|)_{n\geq -1}$ to each augmented semi-simplicial finite set $X$. Here, $|X_n|$ stands for the finite cardinality of the set of $n$-simplices $X_n$. The sequential cardinal functor transforms the action of any co-semi-simplicial set into the action of a matrix on a sequence. Therefore, we can easily calculate the number of simplices of cylinders or subdivisions of an augmented semi-simplicial set. Alternatively, instead of using the action of a matrix on a sequence, we can also compute suitable matrices and consider the product of an augmented sequence of integers and an infinite augmented matrix of integers. The calculation of these matrices is related mainly to binomial, chain-power-set, and Stirling numbers. From another point of view, these matrices can be considered as continuous automorphisms of the Baer-Specker topological group.
Proof of an explicit formula for a series from Ramanujan's Notebooks via tree functions
We prove a recent conjecture, due to Vigren and Dieckmann, about an explicit triple sum formula for a series from Ramanujan's Notebooks. We shall give two proofs: the first one is by evaluation and based on the identity \begin{equation*}
\sum_{k=0}^\infty \frac{(x+k)^{m+k}}{k!}e^{-u(x+k)} u^k
= \sum_{j=0}^\infty \sum_{i=0}^{m}\binom{m+j}{i}
\stirl{m+j-i}{j}x^iu^j, \end{equation*} where $\genfrac\{\}{0pt}{}{n}{k}$ is a Stirling number of the second kind, and the second one is combinatorial in nature and by induction.
Some identities involving $q$-Stirling numbers of the second kind in type B
The recent interest in $q$-Stirling numbers of the second kind in type B prompted us to give a type B analogue of a classical identity connecting the $q$-Stirling numbers of the second kind and Carlitz's major $q$-Eulerian numbers, which turns out to be a $q$-analogue of an identity due to Bagno, Biagioli and Garber. We provide a combinatorial proof of this identity and an analytical proof of a more general identity for colored permutations. In addition, we prove some $q$-identities about the $q$-Stirling numbers of the second kind in types A, B and D.
Generalized degenerate stirling numbers arising from degenerate boson normal ordering
It is remarkable that, in recent years, intensive studies have been done for degenerate versions of many special polynomials and numbers and have yielded many interesting results. The aim of this paper is to study the generalized degenerate (r, s)-Stirling numbers of the second and their natural extensions to polynomials, namely the generalized degenerate (r, s)-Bell polynomials, arising from certain degenerate boson normal ordering. We derive some properties, explicit expressions and generating functions for those numbers and polynomials. The generalized degenerate (r, s)-Stirling numbers of the second and the degenerate boson normal ordering are respectively degenerate versions of the generalized (r, s)-Stirling numbers of the second and the boson normal ordering studied earlier by Blasiak-Person-Solomon.
Stirling numbers with higher level and records
In this present paper, we show that the Stirling numbers of the first kind with higher level connected with the probability distribution of the number of records and record times in the so-called F^α-scheme. In addition, we determine the location of the maximum of the Stirling numbers of the first kind with higher level.

We study the enumeration of set partitions, according to their length, number of parts, cyclic type, and genus. We introduce genus-dependent Bell, Stirling numbers, and Faà di Bruno coefficients. Besides attempting to summarize what is already known on the subject, we obtain new generic results (in particular for partitions into two parts, for arbitrary genus), and present computer generated new data extending the number of terms known for sequences or families of such coefficients; this also leads to new conjectures.
Divisibility of the Sums of the Power of Consecutive Integers
We study the divisibility of the sums of the odd power of consecutive integers, $S(m,k)=1^{mk}+2^{mk}+\cdots+k^{mk}$ and $1^k+2^k+\cdots+n^k$ for odd integers $m$ and $k$, by using the Girard-Waring identity. Faulhaber's approach for the divisibilities is discussed. Some expressions of power sums in terms of Stirling numbers of the second kind are represented.
On the generating functions and special functions associated with superoscillations
The aim of this paper is to study generating functions for the coefficients of the classical superoscillatory function associated with weak measurements. We also establish some new relations between the superoscillatory coefficients and many well-known families of special polynomials, numbers, and functions such as Bernstein basis functions, the Hermite polynomials, the Stirling numbers of second kind, and also the confluent hypergeometric functions. Moreover, by using generating functions, we are able to develop a recurrence relation and a derivative formula for the superoscillatory coefficients.
A q-analog of certain symmetric functions and one of its specializations
Let the symmetric functions be defined for the pair of integers $\left( n,r\right) $, $n\geq r\geq 1$, by $p_{n}^{\left( r\right) }=\sum m_{λ}$ where $m_{λ}$ are the monomial symmetric functions, the sum being over the partitions $λ$ of the integer $n$ with length $r$. We introduce by a generating function, a $q$-analog of $p_{n}^{\left( r\right) }$ and give some of its properties. This $q$-analog is related to its the classical form using the $q$-Stirling numbers. We also start with the same procedure the study of a $p,q$-analog of $p_{n}^{\left( r\right) }$.
By specialization of this $q$-analog in the series $\sum\nolimits_{n=0}^{ \infty }q^{\binom{n}{2}}t^{n}/n!$, we recover in a purely formal way$\ $a class of polynomials $J_{n}^{\left( r\right) }$ historically introduced as combinatorial enumerators, in particular of tree inversions. This also results in a new linear recurrence for those polynomials whose triangular table can be constructed, row by row, from the initial conditions $ J_{r}^{\left( r\right) }=1$. The form of this recurrence is also given for the reciprocal polynomials of $J_{n}^{\left( r\right) }$, known to be the sum enumerators of parking functions. Explicit formulas for $J_{n}^{\left( r\right) }$ and their reciprocals are deduced, leading inversely to new representations of these polynomials as forest statistics.
Normal ordering associated with λ-Stirling numbers inλ-Shift algebra
The Stirling numbers of the second kind are related to normal orderings in the Weyl algebra, while the unsigned Stirling numbers of the first kind are related to normal orderings in the shift algebra. Kim-Kim introduced a λ-analogue of the unsigned Stirling numbers of the first kind and that of the r-Stirling numbers of the first kind. In this paper, we introduce a λ-analogue of the shift algebra (called λ-shift algebra) and investigate normal orderings in the λ-shift algebra. From the normal orderings in the λ-shift algebra, we derive some identities about the λ-analogue of the unsigned Stirling numbers of the first kind .
A Lucas analogue of Eulerian numbers
The generalized Lucas numbers are polynomials in two variables with nonnegative integer coefficients. Lucas versions of some combinatorial numbers with known formulas in terms of quotient and products of nonnegative integers have been recently given by replacing the integers in those formulas with their corresponding Lucas analogues. We instead use a recursive approach. In this sense, we give a recursive formula for Lucas-Narayana numbers derived from a recent formula in terms of Lucasnomials (the explicit Lucas version of binomial numbers). We propose a recursive definition for a Lucas analogue of the classical Eulerian numbers, which shows immediately that they are polynomials in two variables with nonnegative integer coefficients. We prove that they are palindromic like their standard counterparts. The recursive approach allows us to give Lucas analogues of many relevant combinatorial constants. In particular, Lucas versions for both Stirling numbers of the second kind and Motzkin numbers are presented.
C Sequential Optimization Numbers Group
We define C sequential optimization numbers, where C is a k+1-tuple vector. We prove that the unsigned Stirling numbers of first kind are (0,1) sequential optimization numbers. Many achievements of the Stirling numbers of first kind can be transformed into the properties of C sequential optimization numbers. We give some examples such as the recurrence formula and an instance of C sequential optimization numbers. We also extend some properties such as an upper bounder of them.
On the lattice of weighted partitions
We introduce and study the lattice of generalized partitions, called weighted partitions. This lattice possesses similar properties of the lattice of partitions. By use of the pictorial representation of a weighted partition, the total number is given by the successive Stirling transforms of the Stirling number of the second kind. We construct an explicit $EL$-labeling on the lattice, which implies this lattice is $EL$-shellable and hence shellable. We compute the Möbius function and the characteristic polynomial by use of a pictorial representation of a maximal decreasing chain. Further, a maximal decreasing chain is shown to be bijective to a labeled rooted complete binary tree.

Random recursive hypergraphs grow by adding, at each step, a vertex and an edge formed by joining the new vertex to a randomly chosen existing edge. The model is parameter-free, and several characteristics of emerging hypergraphs admit neat expressions via harmonic numbers, Bernoulli numbers, Eulerian numbers, and Stirling numbers of the first kind. Natural deformations of random recursive hypergraphs give rise to fascinating models of growing random hypergraphs.

We introduce poly-Bernoulli polynomials in two variables by using a generalization of Stirling numbers of the second kind that we studied in a previous work. We prove the bi-variate poly-Bernoulli polynomial version of some known results on standard Bernoulli polynomials, as the addition formula and the binomial formula. We also prove a result that allows us to obtain poly-Bernoulli polynomial identities from polynomial identities, and we use this result to obtain several identities involving products of poly-Bernoulli and/or standard Bernoulli polynomials. We prove two generalized recurrences for bi-variate poly-Bernoulli polynomials, and obtain some corollaries from them.

In this short note we provide some algebraic identity with a proof exploiting its probabilistic interpretation. We show several consequences of the identity, in particular we obtain a new representation of a Stirling number of second kind,
$$ S(n,d)={1\over d!} \sum_{1\leq j_1<j_2<\ldots<j_{d-1}< n} 1\cdot2^{j_{d-1}-j_{d-2}}\cdots d^{j_1}$$
for integers $n\geq d$. Relating this to other known formula for $S(n,d)$ we also obtain
$$ \sum_{1\leq j_1\leq j_2\leq \cdots\leq j_{n-d}\leq d} j_1j_2\ldots,j_{n-d} =d! \sum_{1\leq j_1<j_2<\ldots<j_{d-1}< n} 1\cdot2^{j_{d-1}-j_{d-2}}\cdots d^{j_1}.$$
As a side effect, we have new proof of a known result stating that for any integer $d\in\mathbb{N}$ and any $x\in\mathbb{R}$ equality
$$\sum_{r=0}^d (-1)^r{d\choose r}(x-r)^d=d!$$ holds. This is a special case of the presented identity.
