Uniform Convergence of an Asymptotic Approximation to Associated Stirling Numbers
Let $S_r(p,q)$ be the $r$-associated Stirling numbers of the second kind, the number of ways to partition a set of size $p$ into $q$ subsets of size at least $r$. For $r=1$, these are the standard Stirling numbers of the second kind, and for $r=2$, these are also known as the Ward Numbers. This paper concerns asymptotic expansions of these Stirling numbers; such expansions have been known for many years. However, while uniform convergence of these expansions was conjectured in Hennecart's 1994 paper, it has not been fully proved. A recent paper (Connamacher and Dobrosotskaya, 2020) went a long way, by proving uniform convergence on a large set. In this paper we build on that paper and prove convergence "everywhere."

Stirling numbers for complex reflection groups
In an earlier paper, we defined and studied q-analogues of the Stirling numbers of both types for the Coxeter group of type B. In the present work, we show how this approach can be extended to all irreducible complex reflection groups G. The Stirling numbers of the first and second kind are defined via the Whitney numbers of the first and second kind, respectively, of the intersection lattice of G. For the groups G(m,p,n), these numbers and polynomials can be given combinatorial interpretations in terms of various statistics. The ordered version of ths q-Stirling numbers of the second kind also show up in conjectured Hilbert series for certain super coinvariant algebras.

Connecting the Stirling numbers and $k$-bonacci sums
This paper proves why the Stirling numbers show up in a experimentally determined formula for the $k$-bonaccis. We develop a bijection between a previously determined summation formula for $k$-bonaccis and an experimentally determined formula, proven algebraically.

Explicit estimates for the Stirling numbers of the second kind
We give explicit estimates for the Stirling numbers of the second kind $S(n,m)$. With a few exceptions, such estimates are asymptotically sharp. The form of these estimates varies according to $m$ lying in the central or non-central regions of $\{1,\ldots ,n\}$. In each case, we use a different probabilistic representation of $S(n,m)$ in terms of well known random variables to show the corresponding results.
The Fibonacci-Fubini and Lucas-Fubini numbers
Based on the combinatorial interpretation of the ordered Bell numbers, which count all the ordered partitions of the set $[n]=\{1,2,\dots,n\}$, we introduce the Fibonacci partition as a Fibonacci permutation of its blocks. Then we define the Fibonacci-Fubini numbers that count the total number of Fibonacci partitions of $[n]$. We study the classical properties of this sequence (generating function, explicit and Dobiński-like formula, etc.), we give combinatorial interpretation, and we extensively examine the Fibonacci-Fubini arithmetic triangle. We give some associate linear recurrence sequences, where in some sequences the Stirling numbers of the first and second kinds appear as well.

Probabilistic degenerate Stirling numbers of the first kind and their applications
Let Y be a random variable whose degenerate moment generating functions exist in some neighborhoods of the origin. The aim of this paper is to study the probabilistic degenerate Stirling numbers of the first kind associated with Y which are constructed from the degenerate cumulant generating function of Y. They are a degenerate version of the probabilistic Stirling numbers of the first kind associated with Y, which were recently introduced by Adell-Benyi. We investigate some properties, related identities, recurrence relations and explicit expressions for those numbers. In addition, we apply our results to the special cases of normal and gamma random variables.

Explicit formulae for generalized Stirling and Eulerian numbers
In this article we generalize the $q$-difference operator due to Carlitz in order to derive explicit sum formulae for several extensions of Stirling numbers of the second kind, including complete homogeneous symmetric functions, complementary symmetric functions, $r$-Whitney numbers and elliptic analogues of rook, Stirling and Lah numbers. Furthermore, we generalize Carlitz' $q$-Eulerian numbers to a Lagrange polynomial extension. We define them by generalizing Worpitzky's identity appropriately, and derive a recursion and an explicit sum formulae. Special cases include $r$-Whitney Eulerian numbers and elliptic Eulerian numbers.

Koszulity, supersolvability, and Stirling representations
Published in Ann. Represent. Theory 2, No. 2, 173-247 (2025) • View PublicationBIB
Supersolvable hyperplane arrangements and matroids are known to give rise to certain Koszul algebras, namely their Orlik-Solomon algebras and graded Varchenko-Gel'fand algebras. We explore how this interacts with group actions, particularly for the braid arrangement and the action of the symmetric group, where the Hilbert functions of the algebras and their Koszul duals are given by Stirling numbers of the first and second kinds, respectively. The corresponding symmetric group representations exhibit branching rules that interpret Stirling number recurrences, which are shown to apply to all supersolvable arrangements. They also enjoy representation stability properties that follow from Koszul duality.

Convolution Identities of Stirling Numbers
By means of the generating function method, a linear recurrence relation is explicitly resolved. The solution is expressed in terms of the Stirling numbers of both the first and the second kind. Two remarkable pairs of combinatorial identities are established as applications, that contain some well-known convolution formulae on Stirling numbers as special cases.
Multinomial random combinatorial structures and $r$-versions of Stirling, Eulerian and Lah numbers
We introduce multinomial and $r$-variants of several classic objects of combinatorial probability, such as the random recursive and Hoppe trees, random set partitions and compositions, the Chinese restaurant process, Feller's coupling, and some others. Just as various classic combinatorial numbers - like Stirling, Eulerian and Lah numbers - emerge as essential ingredients defining the distributions of the mentioned processes, the so-called $r$-versions of these numbers appear in exact distributional formulas for the multinomial and $r$-counterparts. This approach allows us to offer a concise probabilistic interpretation for various identities involving $r$-versions of these combinatorial numbers, which were either unavailable or meaningful only for specific values of the parameter $r$. We analyze the derived distributions for fixed-size structures and establish distributional limit theorems as the size tends to infinity. Utilizing the aforementioned generalized Stirling numbers of both kinds, we define and analyze $(r,s)$-Lah distributions, which have arisen in the existing literature on combinatorial probability in various contexts.

A class of polynomial recurrences resulting in $(n/\log n, n/\log^2n)$-asymptotic normality
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider sequences of polynomials that satisfy differential-difference recurrences. Polynomials satisfying such recurrences frequently appear as generating polynomials of integer valued random variables that are of interest in discrete mathematics. It is, therefore, of interest to understand the properties of such polynomials and their probabilistic consequences. We identify a class of polynomial recurrences that lead to a normal law with the expected value and the variance proportional to $n/\log n$ and $n/\log^2n$, respectively. Examples include Stirling number of the second kind and other polynomials concerning set partitions as well as polynomials related to Whitney numbers of Dowling lattices.

Formulas involving Cauchy polynomials, Bernoulli polynomials, and generalized Stirling numbers
Published in Axioms 2025, 14, 746 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we derive novel formulas and identities connecting Cauchy numbers and polynomials with both ordinary and generalized Stirling numbers, binomial coefficients, central factorial numbers, Euler polynomials, $r$-Whitney numbers, and hyperharmonic polynomials, as well as Bernoulli numbers and polynomials. We also provide formulas for the higher-order derivatives of Cauchy polynomials and obtain corresponding formulas and identities for poly-Cauchy polynomials. Furthermore, we introduce a multiparameter framework for poly-Cauchy polynomials, unifying earlier generalizations like shifted poly-Cauchy numbers and polynomials with a $q$ parameter.

Combinatorics of q,r-analogues of Stirling numbers of type B
Stirling number of the first and the second kinds have seen many generalizations and applications in various areas of mathematics. We introduce some combinatorial parameters which realize $q$-analogues and Broder's $r$-variants of Stirling numbers of type $B$ of both kinds, which count signed set partitions and signed permutations respectively. Applications to orthogonality relations and power sums are given.

The $m$th-order Eulerian Numbers
We define the $m$th-order Eulerian numbers with a combinatorial interpretation. The recurrence relation of the $m$th-order Eulerian numbers, the row generating function and the row sums of the $m$th-order Eulerian triangle are presented. We also define the $m$th-order Eulerian fraction and its alternative form. Some properties of the $m$th-order Eulerian fractions are represented by using differentiation and integration. An inversion relationship between second-order Eulerian numbers and Stirling numbers of the second kind is given. Finally, we give the exact expression of the values of the $m$th-order Eulerian numbers.

Iterated Entropy Derivatives and Binary Entropy Inequalities
Published • View PublicationBIB
We embark on a systematic study of the $(k+1)$-th derivative of $x^{k-r}H(x^r)$, where $H(x):=-x\log x-(1-x)\log(1-x)$ is the binary entropy and $k>r\geq 1$ are integers. Our motivation is the conjectural entropy inequality $α_k H(x^k)\geq x^{k-1}H(x)$, where $0<α_k<1$ is given by a functional equation. The $k=2$ case was the key technical tool driving recent breakthroughs on the union-closed sets conjecture. We express $ \frac{d^{k+1}}{dx^{k+1}}x^{k-r}H(x^r)$ as a rational function, an infinite series, and a sum over generalized Stirling numbers. This allows us to reduce the proof of the entropy inequality for real $k$ to showing that an associated polynomial has only two real roots in the interval $(0,1)$, which also allows us to prove the inequality for fractional exponents such as $k=3/2$. The proof suggests a new framework for proving tight inequalities for the sum of polynomials times the logarithms of polynomials, which converts the inequality into a statement about the real roots of a simpler associated polynomial.
Singmaster-type results for Stirling numbers and some related diophantine equations
Motivated by the work of David Singmaster, we study the number of times an integer can appear among the Stirling numbers of both kinds. We provide an upper bound for the occurrences of all the positive integers, and present certain questions for further study. Some numerical results and conjectures concerning the related diohantine equations are collected.

Moment Generating Stirling Numbers of the first kind and Applications
In this paper we introduce and investigate moment generating Stirling numbers of the first kind, "`MSN1"'. They are inverses of MSN2's, which make the representation of the moments for a lot of statistical distributions in closed formulas possible. Both MSN1's and MSN2's are related to the r-Stirling numbers, and extend their properties to any real third parameter. If the third parameter is a nonnegative integer, r-Stirling numbers can be converted to MSN's and vice versa.

Closed-form formulas, determinantal expressions, recursive relations, power series, and special values of several functions used in Clark--Ismail's two conjectures
Published in Applied and Computational Mathematics, vol. 22 (2023), No. 4, 443--465 • View PublicationBIB
In the paper, by virtue of the famous formula of Faà di Bruno, with the aid of several identities of partial Bell polynomials, by means of a formula for derivatives of the ratio of two differentiable functions, and with availability of other techniques, the authors establish closed-form formulas in terms of the Bernoulli numbers and the second kind Stirling numbers, present determinantal expressions, derive recursive relations, obtain power series, and compute special values of the function $\frac{v^j}{1-\operatorname{e}^{-v}}$, its derivatives, and related ones used in Clark--Ismail's two conjectures. By these results, the authors also discover a formula for the determinant of a Hessenberg matrix and derive logarithmic convexity of a sequence related to the function and its derivatives.
Recurrences for values of the Hurwitz type poly-Bernoulli numbers and polynomials
The main object of this paper is to investigate a new class of the generalized Hurwitz type poly-Bernoulli numbers and polynomials from which we derive some algorithms for evaluating the Hurwitz type poly-Bernoulli numbers and polynomials. By introducing a new generalization of the Stirling numbers of the second kind, we succeed to establish some combinatorial formulas for the generalized Hurwitz type poly-Bernoulli numbers and polynomials with negative upper indices. Moreover, we give a connection between the generalized Stirling numbers of the second kind and graph theory.
