The totally nonnegative Grassmannian is the set of k-dimensional subspaces V of R^n whose nonzero Pluecker coordinates all have the same sign. Gantmakher and Krein (1950) and Schoenberg and Whitney (1951) independently showed that V is totally nonnegative iff every vector in V, when viewed as a sequence of n numbers and ignoring any zeros, changes sign at most k-1 times. We generalize this result from the totally nonnegative Grassmannian to the entire Grassmannian, showing that if V is generic (i.e. has no zero Pluecker coordinates), then the vectors in V change sign at most m times iff certain sequences of Pluecker coordinates of V change sign at most m-k+1 times. We also give an algorithm which, given a non-generic V whose vectors change sign at most m times, perturbs V into a generic subspace whose vectors also change sign at most m times. We deduce that among all V whose vectors change sign at most m times, the generic subspaces are dense. These results generalize to oriented matroids. As an application of our results, we characterize when a generalized amplituhedron construction, in the sense of Arkani-Hamed and Trnka (2013), is well defined. We also give two ways of obtaining the positroid cell of each V in the totally nonnegative Grassmannian from the sign patterns of vectors in V.

Let u and v be permutations on n letters, with u <= v in Bruhat order. A Bruhat interval polytope Q_{u,v} is the convex hull of all permutation vectors z = (z(1), z(2),...,z(n)) with u <= z <= v. Note that when u=e and v=w_0 are the shortest and longest elements of the symmetric group, Q_{e,w_0} is the classical permutohedron. Bruhat interval polytopes were studied recently by Kodama and the second author, in the context of the Toda lattice and the moment map on the flag variety.
In this paper we study combinatorial aspects of Bruhat interval polytopes. For example, we give an inequality description and a dimension formula for Bruhat interval polytopes, and prove that every face of a Bruhat interval polytope is a Bruhat interval polytope. A key tool in the proof of the latter statement is a generalization of the well-known lifting property for Coxeter groups. Motivated by the relationship between the lifting property and R-polynomials, we also give a generalization of the standard recurrence for R-polynomials. Finally, we define a more general class of polytopes called Bruhat interval polytopes for G/P, which are moment map images of (closures of) totally positive cells in the non-negative part of G/P, and are a special class of Coxeter matroid polytopes. Using tools from total positivity and the Gelfand-Serganova stratification, we show that the face of any Bruhat interval polytope for G/P is again a Bruhat interval polytope for G/P.

We extend the big and $p$-typical Witt vector functors from commutative rings to commutative semirings. In the case of the big Witt vectors, this is a repackaging of some standard facts about monomial and Schur positivity in the combinatorics of symmetric functions. In the $p$-typical case, it uses positivity with respect to an apparently new basis of the $p$-typical symmetric functions. We also give explicit descriptions of the big Witt vectors of the natural numbers and of the nonnegative reals, the second of which is a restatement of Edrei's theorem on totally positive power series. Finally we give some negative results on the relationship between truncated Witt vectors and $k$-Schur positivity, and we give ten open questions.

Generalizing recent results of Egge and Mongelli, we show that each diagonal sequence of the Jacobi-Stirling numbers $\js(n,k;z)$ and $\JS(n,k;z)$ is a Pólya frequency sequence if and only if $z\in [-1, 1]$ and study the $z$-total positivity properties of these numbers. Moreover, the polynomial sequences $$\biggl\{\sum_{k=0}^n\JS(n,k;z)y^k\biggr\}_{n\geq 0}\quad \text{and} \quad \biggl\{\sum_{k=0}^n\js(n,k;z)y^k\biggr\}_{n\geq 0}$$ are proved to be strongly $\{z,y\}$-log-convex. In the same vein, we extend a recent result of Chen et al. about the Ramanujan polynomials to Chapoton's generalized Ramanujan polynomials. Finally, bridging the Ramanujan polynomials and a sequence arising from the Lambert $W$ function, we obtain a neat proof of the unimodality of the latter sequence, which was proved previously by Kalugin and Jeffrey.
Efficient recognition of totally nonnegative matrix cells

The space of mxp totally nonnegative real matrices has a stratification into totally nonnegative cells. The largest such cell is the space of totally positive matrices. There is a well-known criterion due to Gasca and Peña for testing a real matrix for total positivity. This criterion involves testing mp minors. In contrast, there is no known small set of minors for testing for total nonnegativity. In this paper, we show that for each of the totally nonnegative cells there is a test for membership which only involves mp minors, thus extending the Gasca and Peña result to all totally nonnegative cells.
The Horn problem and planar networks

The problem of determining the set of possible eigenvalues of 3 Hermitian matrices that sum up to zero is known as the Horn problem. The answer is a polyhedral cone, which, following Knutson and Tao, can be described as the projection of a simpler cone in the space of triangular tableaux (or hives) to the boundary nodes of the tableau.
In this paper, we introduce a combinatorial problem defined in terms of certain weighted planar graphs giving rise to exactly the same polyhedral cone. In our framework, the values at the inner nodes of the triangular tableaux receive a natural interpretation. Other problems of linear algebra fit into the same scheme, among them the Gelfand--Zeitlin problem. Our approach is motivated by the works of Fomin and Zelevinsky on total positivity and by the ideas of tropicalization.
Combinatorics of KP solitons from the real Grassmannian

Given a point A in the real Grassmannian, it is well-known that one can construct a soliton solution u_A(x,y,t) to the KP equation. The contour plot of such a solution provides a tropical approximation to the solution when the variables x, y, and t are considered on a large scale and the time t is fixed. In this paper we give an overview of our work on the combinatorics of such contour plots. Using the positroid stratification and the Deodhar decomposition of the Grassmannian (and in particular the combinatorics of Go-diagrams), we completely describe the asymptotics of these contour plots when |y| or |t| go to infinity. Other highlights include: a surprising connection with total positivity and cluster algebras; results on the inverse problem; and the characterization of regular soliton solutions -- that is, a soliton solution u_A(x,y,t) is regular for all times t if and only if A comes from the totally non-negative part of the Grassmannian.

Let G be a simple and simply-connected complex algebraic group, and let X \subset G^\vee be the centralizer subgroup of a principal nilpotent element. Ginzburg and Peterson independently related the ring of functions on X with the homology ring of the affine Grassmannian Gr_G. Peterson furthermore connected this ring to the quantum cohomology rings of partial flag varieties G/P.
The first aim of this paper is to study three different notions of positivity on X: (1) Schubert positivity arising via Peterson's work, (2) total positivity in the sense of Lusztig, and (3) Mirkovic-Vilonen positivity obtained from the MV-cycles in Gr_G. Our first main theorem establishes that these three notions of positivity coincide. The second aim of this paper is to parametrize the totally nonnegative part of X, confirming a conjecture of the second author.
In type A a substantial part of our results were previously established by the second author. The crucial new component of this paper is the connection with the affine Grassmannian and the geometric Satake correspondence.
Combinatorics of the permutation tableaux of type B

Permutation tableaux are combinatorial objects related with permutations and various statistics on them. They appeared in connection with total positivity in Grassmannians, and stationary probabilities in a PASEP model. In particular they gave rise to an interesting q-analog of Eulerian numbers. The purpose of this article is to study some combinatorial properties of type B permutation tableaux, defined by Lam and Williams, and links with signed permutation statistics. We show that many of the tools used for permutation tableaux generalize in this case, including: the Matrix Ansatz (a method originally related with the PASEP), bijections with labeled paths and links with continued fractions, bijections with signed permutations. In particular we obtain a q-analog of the type B Eulerian numbers, having a lot in common with the previously known q-Eulerian numbers: for example they have a nice symmetry property, they have the type B Narayana numbers as constant terms. The signed permutation statistics arising here are of several kinds. Firstly, there are several variants of descents and excedances, and more precisely of flag descents and flag excedances. Other statistics are the crossings and alignments, which generalize a previous definition on (unsigned) permutations. There are also some pattern-like statistics arising from variants of the bijection of Fran\ccon and Viennot.
Weak Separation and Plabic Graphs

Leclerc and Zelevinsky described quasicommuting families of quantum minors in terms of a certain combinatorial condition, called weak separation. They conjectured that all maximal by inclusion weakly separated collections of minors have the same cardinality, and that they can be related to each other by a sequence of mutations.
On the other hand, Postnikov studied total positivity on the Grassmannian. He described a stratification of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian into positroid strata, and constructed their parametrization using plabic graphs.
In this paper we link the study of weak separation to plabeic graphs. We extend the notion of weak separation to positroids. We generalize the conjectures of Leclerc and Zelevinsky, and related ones of Scott, and prove them. We show that the maximal weakly separated collections in a positroid are in bijective correspondence with the plabic graphs. This correspondence allows us to use the combinatorial techniques of positroids and plabic graphs to prove the (generalized) purity and mutation connectedness conjectures.
KP solitons and total positivity for the Grassmannian

Soliton solutions of the KP equation have been studied since 1970, when Kadomtsev and Petviashvili proposed a two-dimensional dispersive wave equation now known as the KP equation. It is well-known that one can use the Wronskian method to construct a soliton solution to the KP equation from each point of the real Grassmannian Gr_kn. More recently several authors have studied the regular solutions that one obtains in this way: these come from points of the totally non-negative part of the Grassmannian (Gr_kn)_{>= 0}. In this paper we exhibit a surprising connection between the theory of total positivity for the Grassmannian, and the structure of regular soliton solutions to the KP equation. By exploiting this connection, we obtain new insights into the structure of KP solitons, as well as new interpretations of the combinatorial objects indexing cells of (Gr_kn)_{>= 0}. In particular, we completely classify the spatial patterns of the soliton solutions coming from (Gr_2n)_{>0}, as well as those coming from (Gr_kn)_{>= 0} when the absolute value of the time parameter is sufficiently large. We also demonstrate an intriguing connection between soliton graphs for (Gr_kn)_{>0} and the cluster algebras of Fomin and Zelevinsky, and we use this connection to solve the inverse problem for generic KP solitons coming from (Gr_kn)_{>0}. Finally we construct all the soliton graphs for (Gr_2n)_{>0} using the triangulations of n-gon.

Soliton solutions of the KP equation have been studied since 1970, when Kadomtsev and Petviashvili proposed a two-dimensional nonlinear dispersive wave equation now known as the KP equation. It is well-known that the Wronskian approach to the KP equation provides a method to construct soliton solutions. The regular soliton solutions that one obtains in this way come from points of the totally non-negative part of the Grassmannian. In this paper we explain how the theory of total positivity and cluster algebras provides a framework for understanding these soliton solutions to the KP equation. We then use this framework to give an explicit construction of certain soliton contour graphs, and solve the inverse problem for soliton solutions coming from the totally positive part of the Grassmannian.

Projections of Richardson Varieties

While the projections of Schubert varieties in a full generalized flag manifold G/B to a partial flag manifold $G/P$ are again Schubert varieties, the projections of Richardson varieties (intersections of Schubert varieties with opposite Schubert varieties) are not always Richardson varieties. The stratification of G/P by projections of Richardson varieties arises in the theory of total positivity and also from Poisson and noncommutative geometry.
In this paper we show that many of the geometric properties of Richardson varieties hold more generally for projected Richardson varieties; they are normal, Cohen-Macaulay, have rational singularities, and are compatibly Frobenius split with respect to the standard splitting. Indeed, we show that the projected Richardson varieties are the only compatibly split subvarieties, providing an example of the recent theorem [Schwede, Kumar-Mehta] that a Frobenius split scheme has only finitely many compatibly split subvarieties. (The G/B case was treated by [Hague], whose proof we simplify somewhat.)
One combinatorial analogue of a Richardson variety is the order complex of the corresponding Bruhat interval in W; this complex is known to be an EL-shellable ball [Bjorner-Wachs '82]. We prove that the projection of such a complex into the order complex of the Bruhat order on W/W_P is again a shellable ball. This requires extensive analysis of "P-Bruhat order", a generalization of the k-Bruhat order of [Bergeron-Sottile '98]. In the case that G/P is minuscule (e.g. a Grassmannian), we show that its Grobner degeneration takes each projected Richardson variety to the Stanley-Reisner scheme of its corresponding ball.

We develop a combinatorial model of networks on orientable surfaces, and study weight and homology generating functions of paths and cycles in these networks. Network transformations preserving these generating functions are investigated.
We describe in terms of our model the crystal structure and R-matrix of the affine geometric crystal of products of symmetric and dual symmetric powers of type A. Local realizations of the R-matrix and crystal actions are used to construct a double affine geometric crystal on a torus, generalizing the commutation result of Kajiwara-Noumi-Yamada and an observation of Berenstein-Kazhdan.
We show that our model on a cylinder gives a decomposition and parametrization of the totally nonnegative part of the rational unipotent loop group of GL_n.

We study products of the affine geometric crystal of type A corresponding to symmetric powers of the standard representation. The quotient of this product by the R-matrix action is constructed inside the unipotent loop group. This quotient crystal has a semi-infinite limit, where the crystal structure is described in terms of limit ratios previously appearing in the study of total positivity of loop groups.

We give an explicit subtraction-free formula for the energy function in tensor products of Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals for symmetric powers of the standard representation of U_q'(\hat sl_n). The energy function is shown to be the tropicalization of a stretched staircase shape loop Schur function. The latter were introduced by the authors in the study of total positivity in loop groups.
Sorting orders, subword complexes, Bruhat order and total positivity

In this note we construct a poset map from a Boolean algebra to the Bruhat order which unveils an interesting connection between subword complexes, sorting orders, and certain totally nonnegative spaces. This relationship gives a new proof of Björner and Wachs' result \cite{BW} that the proper part of Bruhat order is homotopy equivalent to the proper part of a Boolean algebra --- that is, to a sphere. We also obtain a geometric interpretation for sorting orders. We conclude with two new results: that the intersection of all sorting orders is the weak order, and the union of sorting orders is the Bruhat order.
