Some Algebraic Properties of Lecture Hall Polytopes
In this note, we investigate some of the fundamental algebraic and geometric properties of $s$-lecture hall simplices and their generalizations. We show that all $s$-lecture hall order polytopes, which simultaneously generalize $s$-lecture hall simplices and order polytopes, satisfy a property which implies the integer decomposition property. This answers one conjecture of Hibi, Olsen and Tsuchiya. By relating $s$-lecture hall polytopes to alcoved polytopes, we then use this property to show that families of $s$-lecture hall simplices admit a quadratic Gröbner basis with a square-free initial ideal. Consequently, we find that all $s$-lecture hall simplices for which the first order difference sequence of $s$ is a $0,1$-sequence have a regular and unimodular triangulation. This answers a second conjecture of Hibi, Olsen and Tsuchiya, and it gives a partial answer to a conjecture of Beck, Braun, Köppe, Savage and Zafeirakopoulos.

Polynomial-size vectors are enough for the unimodular triangulation of simplicial cones
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a recent paper, Bruns and von Thaden established a bound for the length of vectors involved in a unimodular triangulation of simplicial cones. The bound is exponential in the square of the logarithm of the multiplicity, and improves previous bounds significantly. The authors mentioned that the next goal would be a bound that is polynomial in the multiplicity but not knowing if such a bound exists. In this paper we will prove that such a bound, which is polynomial in the multiplicity $μ$, indeed exists. In detail, the bound is of the type $μ^{f(d)}$ with $f(d) \in \mathcal{O}(d)$.

Birkhoff polytopes of different type and the orthant-lattice property
The Birkhoff polytope, defined to be the convex hull of $n\times n$ permutation matrices, is a well studied polytope in the context of the Ehrhart theory. This polytope is known to have many desirable properties, such as the Gorenstein property and existence of regular, unimodular triangulations. In this paper, we study analogues of the Birkhoff polytope for finite irreducible Coxeter groups of other types. We focus on a type-$B$ Birkhoff polytope $\mathcal{BB}(n)$ arising from signed permutation matrices and prove that it and its dual polytope are reflexive, and hence Gorenstein, and also possess regular, unimodular triangulations. Noting that our triangulation proofs do not rely on the combinatorial structure of $\mathcal{BB}(n)$, we define the notion of an orthant-lattice property polytope and use this to prove more general results for the existence of regular, unimodular triangulations and unimodular covers for a significant family of reflexive polytopes. We conclude by remarking on some connections to Gale-duality, Birkhoff polytopes of other types, and possible applications of orthant-lattice property.

Enriched chain polytopes
Published in Israel Journal of Mathematics 237 (2020), 485 - 500 • View PublicationBIB
Stanley introduced a lattice polytope $\mathcal{C}_P$ arising from a finite poset $P$, which is called the chain polytope of $P$. The geometric structure of $\mathcal{C}_P$ has good relations with the combinatorial structure of $P$. In particular, the Ehrhart polynomial of $\mathcal{C}_P$ is given by the order polynomial of $P$. In the present paper, associated to $P$, we introduce a lattice polytope $\mathcal{E}_{P}$, which is called the enriched chain polytope of $P$, and investigate geometric and combinatorial properties of this polytope. By virtue of the algebraic technique on Gröbner bases, we see that $\mathcal{E}_P$ is a reflexive polytope with a flag regular unimodular triangulation. Moreover, the $h^*$-polynomial of $\mathcal{E}_P$ is equal to the $h$-polynomial of a flag triangulation of a sphere. On the other hand, by showing that the Ehrhart polynomial of $\mathcal{E}_P$ coincides with the left enriched order polynomial of $P$, it follows from works of Stembridge and Petersen that the $h^*$-polynomial of $\mathcal{E}_P$ is $γ$-positive. Stronger, we prove that the $γ$-polynomial of $\mathcal{E}_P$ is equal to the $f$-polynomial of a flag simplicial complex.

Enumeration of lattice polytopes by their volume
Published • View PublicationBIB
A well known result by Lagarias and Ziegler states that there are finitely many equivalence classes of d-dimensional lattice polytopes having volume at most K, for fixed constants d and K. We describe an algorithm for the complete enumeration of such equivalence classes for arbitrary constants d and K. The algorithm, which gives another proof of the finiteness result, is implemented for small values of K, up to dimension six. The resulting database contains and extends several existing ones, and has been used to correct mistakes in other classifications. When specialized to three-dimensional smooth polytopes, it extends previous classifications by Bogart et al., Lorenz and Lundman. Moreover, we give a structure theorem for smooth polytopes with few lattice points that proves that they have a quadratic triangulation and that we use, together with the classification, to describe smooth polytopes having small volume in arbitrary dimension. In dimension three we enumerate all the simplices having up to 11 interior lattice points and we use them to conjecture a set of sharp inequalities for the coefficients of the Ehrhart h*-polynomials, unifying several existing conjectures. Finally, we extract and discuss minimal interesting examples from the classification, and we study the frequency of properties such as being spanning, very ample, IDP, and having a unimodular cover or triangulation. In particular, we find the smallest polytopes which are very ample but not IDP, and with a unimodular cover but without a unimodular triangulation.

Reflexive polytopes arising from bipartite graphs with $γ$-positivity associated to interior polynomials
Published in Selecta Mathematica. New Series 26 (2020), 59 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we introduce polytopes ${\mathcal B}_G$ arising from root systems $B_n$ and finite graphs $G$, and study their combinatorial and algebraic properties. In particular, it is shown that ${\mathcal B}_G$ is reflexive if and only if $G$ is bipartite. Moreover, in the case, ${\mathcal B}_G$ has a regular unimodular triangulation. This implies that the $h^*$-polynomial of ${\mathcal B}_G$ is palindromic and unimodal when $G$ is bipartite. Furthermore, we discuss stronger properties, namely the $γ$-positivity and the real-rootedness of the $h^*$-polynomials. In fact, if $G$ is bipartite, then the $h^*$-polynomial of ${\mathcal B}_G$ is $γ$-positive and its $γ$-polynomial is given by an interior polynomial (a version of the Tutte polynomial for a hypergraph). The $h^*$-polynomial is real-rooted if and only if the corresponding interior polynomial is real-rooted. From a counterexample to Neggers--Stanley conjecture, we construct a bipartite graph $G$ whose $h^*$-polynomial is not real-rooted but $γ$-positive, and coincides with the $h$-polynomial of a flag triangulation of a sphere.
Arithmetic aspects of symmetric edge polytopes
Published in Mathematika 65 (2019) 763-784 • View PublicationBIB
We investigate arithmetic, geometric and combinatorial properties of symmetric edge polytopes. We give a complete combinatorial description of their facets. By combining Gröbner basis techniques, half-open decompositions and methods for interlacing polynomials we provide an explicit formula for the $h^\ast$-polynomial in case of complete bipartite graphs. In particular, we show that the $h^\ast$-polynomial is $γ$-positive and real-rooted. This proves Gal's conjecture for arbitrary flag unimodular triangulations in this case, and, beyond that, we prove a strengthing due to Nevo and Petersen (2011).

Integer decomposition property for Cayley sums of order and stable set polytopes
Published in Michigan Mathematical Journal 69 (2020), 765--778 • View PublicationBIB
Lattice polytopes which possess the integer decomposition property (IDP for short) turn up in many fields of mathematics. It is known that if the Cayley sum of lattice polytopes possesses IDP, then so does their Minkowski sum. In this paper, the Cayley sum of the order polytope of a finite poset and the stable set polytope of a finite simple graph is studied. We show that the Cayley sum of an order polytope and the stable set polytope of a perfect graph possesses a regular unimodular triangulation and IDP, and hence so does their Minkowski sum. Moreover, it turns out that, for an order polytope and the stable set polytope of a graph, the following conditions are equivalent: (i) the Cayley sum is Gorenstein; (ii) the Minkowski sum is Gorenstein; (iii) the graph is perfect.

Binomial Inequalities for Chromatic, Flow, and Tension Polynomials
Published in Discrete & Computational Geometry 66, no. 2 (2021), 464-474 • View PublicationBIB
A famous and wide-open problem, going back to at least the early 1970's, concerns the classification of chromatic polynomials of graphs. Toward this classification problem, one may ask for necessary inequalities among the coefficients of a chromatic polynomial, and we contribute such inequalities when a chromatic polynomial $χ_G(n) = χ^*_0 \binom {n+d} d + χ^*_1 \binom {n+d-1} d + \dots + χ^*_d \binom n d$ is written in terms of a binomial-coefficient basis. For example, we show that $χ^*_{ j } \le χ^*_{ d-j }$, for $0 \le j \le \frac{ d }{ 2 }$. Similar results hold for flow and tension polynomials enumerating either modular or integral nowhere-zero flows/tensions of a graph. Our theorems follow from connections among chromatic, flow, tension, and order polynomials, as well as Ehrhart polynomials of lattice polytopes that admit unimodular triangulations. Our results use Ehrhart inequalities due to Athanasiadis and Stapledon and are related to recent work by Hersh--Swartz and Breuer--Dall, where inequalities similar to some of ours were derived using algebraic-combinatorial methods.
Existence of regular unimodular triangulations of dilated empty simplices

Given integers $k$ and $m$ with $k \geq 2$ and $m \geq 2$, let $P$ be an empty simplex of dimension $(2k-1)$ whose $δ$-polynomial is of the form $1+(m-1)t^k$. In the present paper, the necessary and sufficient condition for the $k$-th dilation $kP$ of $P$ to have a regular unimodular triangulation will be presented.

Pattern-Avoiding Polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Two well-known polytopes whose vertices are indexed by permutations in the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ are the permutohedron $P_n$ and the Birkhoff polytope $B_n$. We consider polytopes $P_n(Π)$ and $B_n(Π)$, whose vertices correspond to the permutations in $\mathfrak{S}_n$ avoiding a set of patterns $Π$. For various choices of $Π$, we explore the Ehrhart polynomials and $h^*$-vectors of these polytopes as well as other aspects of their combinatorial structure. For $P_n(Π)$, we consider all subsets $Π\subseteq \mathfrak{S}_3$ and are able to provide results in most cases. To illustrate, $P_n(123,132)$ is a Pitman-Stanley polytope, the number of interior lattice points in $P_n(132,312)$ is a derangement number, and the normalized volume of $P_n(123,231,312)$ is the number of trees on $n$ vertices. The polytopes $B_n(Π)$ seem much more difficult to analyze, so we focus on four particular choices of $Π$. First we show that the $B_n(231,321)$ is exactly the Chan-Robbins-Yuen polytope. Next we prove that for any $Π$ containing $\{123,312\}$ we have $h^*(B_n(Π))=1$. Finally, we study $B_n(132,312)$ and $\widetilde{B}_n(123)$, where the tilde indicates that we choose vertices corresponding to alternating permutations avoiding the pattern $123$. In both cases we use order complexes of posets and techniques from toric algebra to construct regular, unimodular triangulations of the polytopes. The posets involved turn out to be isomorphic to the lattices of Young diagrams contained in a certain shape, and this permits us to give an exact expression for the normalized volumes of the corresponding polytopes via the hook formula. Finally, Stanley's theory of $(P,ω)$-partitions allows us to show that their $h^*$-vectors are symmetric and unimodal. Various questions and conjectures are presented throughout.

Self dual reflexive simplices with Eulerian polynomials
Published in Graphs and Combinatorics (2017) 33: 1401-1404 • View PublicationBIB
A lattice polytope $\mathcal{P}$ is called reflexive if its dual $\mathcal{P}^\vee$ is a lattice polytope. The property that $\mathcal{P}$ is unimodularly equivalent to $\mathcal{P}^\vee$ does not hold in general, and in fact there are few examples of such polytopes. In this note, we introduce a new reflexive simplex $Q_n$ which has this property. Additionally, we show that $δ$-polynomalial of $Q_n$ is the Eulerian polynomial and show the existence of a regular, flag, unimodular triangulation.

Unimodular triangulations of simplicial cones by short vectors
Published • View PublicationBIB
We establish a bound for the length of vectors involved in a unimodular triangulation of simplicial cones. The bound is exponential in the square of the logarithm of the multiplicity, and improves previous bounds significantly. The proof is based on a successive reduction of the highest prime divisor of the multiplicity and uses the prime number theorem to control the length of the subdividing vectors.
Generating functions and triangulations for lecture hall cones
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics 30 (2016), no. 3, 1470-1479 • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the arithmetic-geometric structure of the lecture hall cone \[ L_n \ := \ \left\{λ\in \mathbb{R}^n: \, 0\leq \frac{λ_1}{1}\leq \frac{λ_2}{2}\leq \frac{λ_3}{3}\leq \cdots \leq \frac{λ_n}{n}\right\} . \] We show that $L_n$ is isomorphic to the cone over the lattice pyramid of a reflexive simplex whose Ehrhart $h^*$-polynomial is given by the $(n-1)$st Eulerian polynomial, and prove that lecture hall cones admit regular, flag, unimodular triangulations. After explicitly describing the Hilbert basis for $L_n$, we conclude with observations and a conjecture regarding the structure of unimodular triangulations of $L_n$, including connections between enumerative and algebraic properties of $L_n$ and cones over unit cubes.
Moduli of Tropical Plane Curves
Published in Res. Math. Sci. 2:4 (2015) • View PublicationBIB
We study the moduli space of metric graphs that arise from tropical plane curves. There are far fewer such graphs than tropicalizations of classical plane curves. For fixed genus $g$, our moduli space is a stacky fan whose cones are indexed by regular unimodular triangulations of Newton polygons with $g$ interior lattice points. It has dimension $2g+1$ unless $g \leq 3$ or $g = 7$. We compute these spaces explicitly for $g \leq 5$.

Shellability, Ehrhart Theory, and $r$-stable Hypersimplices
Hypersimplices are well-studied objects in combinatorics, optimization, and representation theory. For each hypersimplex, we define a new family of subpolytopes, called r-stable hypersimplices, and show that a well-known regular unimodular triangulation of the hypersimplex restricts to a triangulation of each r-stable hypersimplex. For the case of the second hypersimplex defined by the two-element subsets of an n-set, we provide a shelling of this triangulation that sequentially shells each r-stable sub-hypersimplex. In this case, we utilize the shelling to compute the Ehrhart h*-polynomials of these polytopes, and the hypersimplex, via independence polynomials of graphs. For one such r-stable hypersimplex, this computation yields a connection to CR mappings of Lens spaces via Ehrhart-MacDonald reciprocity.

Existence of a regular unimodular triangulation of the edge polytopes of finite graphs
In this paper we give several criteria for the edge polytope of a fundamental FHM-graph to possess a regular unimodular triangulation in terms of some simple data of the the graph. We further apply our criteria to several examples of graphs and show that their edge polytopes possess a regular unimodular triangulation.

Unimodular triangulations of lattice polytopes arise in algebraic geometry, commutative algebra, integer programming and, of course, combinatorics. In this article, we review several classes of polytopes that do have unimodular triangulations and constructions that preserve their existence. We include, in particular, the first effective proof of the classical result by Knudsen-Mumford-Waterman stating that every lattice polytope has a dilation that admits a unimodular triangulation. Our proof yields an explicit (although doubly exponential) bound for the dilation factor.

Unimodular triangulations of dilated 3-polytopes
Published in Trans. Moscow Math. Soc. 74 (2013), 293-311 • View PublicationBIB
A seminal result in the theory of toric varieties, due to Knudsen, Mumford and Waterman (1973), asserts that for every lattice polytope $P$ there is a positive integer $k$ such that the dilated polytope $kP$ has a unimodular triangulation. In dimension 3, Kantor and Sarkaria (2003) have shown that $k=4$ works for every polytope. But this does not imply that every $k>4$ works as well. We here study the values of $k$ for which the result holds showing that: 1. It contains all composite numbers. 2. It is an additive semigroup. These two properties imply that the only values of $k$ that may not work (besides 1 and 2, which are known not to work) are $k\in\{3,5,7,11\}$. With an ad-hoc construction we show that $k=7$ and $k=11$ also work, except in this case the triangulation cannot be guaranteed to be "standard" in the boundary. All in all, the only open cases are $k=3$ and $k=5$.

Chain polytopes and algebras with straightening laws
