Excited Young diagrams, equivariant K-theory, and Schubert varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give combinatorial descriptions of the restrictions to T-fixed points of the classes of structure sheaves of Schubert varieties in the T-equivariant K-theory of Grassmannians and of maximal isotropic Grassmannians of orthogonal and symplectic types. We also give formulas, based on these descriptions, for the Hilbert series and Hilbert polynomials at T-fixed points of the corresponding Schubert varieties. These descriptions and formulas are given in terms of two equivalent combinatorial models: excited Young diagrams and set-valued tableaux. The restriction fomulas are positive, in that for a Schubert variety of codimension d, the formula equals (-1)^d times a sum, with nonnegative coefficients, of monomials in the expressions (e^{-α}-1), as αruns over the positive roots. In types A_n and C_n the restriction formulas had been proved earlier by [Kreiman 05], [Kreiman 06] by a different method. In type A_n, the formula for the Hilbert series had been proved earlier by [Li-Yong 12]. The method of this paper, which relies on a restriction formula of [Graham 02] and [Willems 06], is based on the method used by [Ikeda-Naruse 09] to obtain the analogous formulas in equivariant cohomology. The formulas we give differ from the K-theoretic restriction formulas given by [Ikeda-Naruse 11], which use different versions of excited Young diagrams and set-valued tableaux. We also give Hilbert series and Hilbert polynomial formulas which are valid for Schubert varieties in any cominuscule flag variety, in terms of the 0-Hecke algebra.

Some conjectures regarding certain Schubert structure constants in Lie types B and D
I give the details of some conjectures regarding Schubert calculus in Lie types B and D. Specifically, I conjecture rules for Schubert structure constants $c_{u,v}^w$ when $X_{w_0u}^v$ is a Richardson variety stable under the spherical Levi subgroup $\C^* \times SO(n-2,\C)$ of $SO(n,\C)$.

The Orlik-Solomon model for hypersurface arrangements
Published in Annales de l'Institut Fourier (Grenoble) 65, no. 6 (2015) 2507-2545 • View PublicationBIB
We develop a model for the cohomology of the complement of a hypersurface arrangement inside a smooth projective complex variety. This generalizes the case of normal crossing divisors, discovered by P. Deligne in the context of the mixed Hodge theory of smooth complex varieties. Our model is a global version of the Orlik-Solomon algebra, which computes the cohomology of the complement of a union of hyperplanes in an affine space. The main tool is the complex of logarithmic forms along a hypersurface arrangement, and its weight filtration. Connections with wonderful compactifications and the configuration spaces of points on curves are also studied.

Mutations of fake weighted projective planes
Published in Proceedings of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society, 59 (2016), no. 2, 271-285 • View PublicationBIB
In previous work by Coates, Galkin, and the authors, the notion of mutation between lattice polytopes was introduced. Such a mutation gives rise to a deformation between the corresponding toric varieties. In this paper we study one-step mutations that correspond to deformations between weighted projective planes, giving a complete characterisation of such mutations in terms of T-singularities. We show also that the weights involved satisfy Diophantine equations, generalising results of Hacking-Prokhorov.

Products of Young symmetrizers and ideals in the generic tensor algebra
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 39, no. 2:247-270, 2014 • View PublicationBIB
We describe a formula for computing the product of the Young symmetrizer of a Young tableau with the Young symmetrizer of a subtableau, generalizing the classical quasi-idempotence of Young symmetrizers. We derive some consequences to the structure of ideals in the generic tensor algebra and its partial symmetrizations. Instances of these generic algebras appear in the work of Sam and Snowden on twisted commutative algebras, as well as in the work of the author on the defining ideals of secant varieties of Segre-Veronese varieties, and in joint work of Oeding and the author on the defining ideals of tangential varieties of Segre-Veronese varieties.

Minuscule Schubert Varieties and Mirror Symmetry
Published in SIGMA 13 (2017), 067, 25 pages • View PublicationBIB
We consider smooth complete intersection Calabi-Yau 3-folds in minuscule Schubert varieties, and study their mirror symmetry by degenerating the ambient Schubert varieties to Hibi toric varieties. We list all possible Calabi-Yau 3-folds of this type up to deformation equivalences, and find a new example of smooth Calabi-Yau 3-folds of Picard number one; a complete intersection in a locally factorial Schubert variety ${\boldsymbolΣ}$ of the Cayley plane ${\mathbb{OP}}^2$. We calculate topological invariants and BPS numbers of this Calabi-Yau 3-fold and conjecture that it has a non-trivial Fourier-Mukai partner.

Finiteness of the polyhedral Q-codegree spectrum
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we show that the spectrum of the Q-codegree of a d-dimensional lattice polytope is finite above any positive threshold in the class of lattice polytopes with α-canonical normal fan for any fixed α>0. For α=1/r this includes lattice polytopes with Q-Gorenstein normal fan of index r. In particular, this proves Fujita's Spectrum Conjecture for polarized varieties in the case of Q-Gorenstein toric varieties of index r.

Importance sampling for weighted binary random matrices with specified margins
A sequential importance sampling algorithm is developed for the distribution that results when a matrix of independent, but not identically distributed, Bernoulli random variables is conditioned on a given sequence of row and column sums. This conditional distribution arises in a variety of applications and includes as a special case the uniform distribution over zero-one tables with specified margins. The algorithm uses dynamic programming to combine hard margin constraints, combinatorial approximations, and additional non-uniform weighting in a principled way to give state-of-the-art results.

Enumerating indices of Schubert varieties defined by inclusions
Published • View PublicationBIB
By extending the notion of grid classes to include infinite grids, we establish a structural characterisation of the simple permutations in Av(4231, 35142, 42513, 351624), a pattern class which has three different connections with algebraic geometry, including the specification of indices of Schubert varieties defined by inclusions. This characterisation leads to the enumeration of the class.

Complete monotonicity for inverse powers of some combinatorially defined polynomials
Published in Acta Mathematica 213, 323-392 (2014) • View PublicationBIB
We prove the complete monotonicity on $(0,\infty)^n$ for suitable inverse powers of the spanning-tree polynomials of graphs and, more generally, of the basis generating polynomials of certain classes of matroids. This generalizes a result of Szego and answers, among other things, a long-standing question of Lewy and Askey concerning the positivity of Taylor coefficients for certain rational functions. Our proofs are based on two_ab initio_ methods for proving that $P^{-β}$ is completely monotone on a convex cone $C$: the determinantal method and the quadratic-form method. These methods are closely connected with harmonic analysis on Euclidean Jordan algebras (or equivalently on symmetric cones). We furthermore have a variety of constructions that, given such polynomials, can create other ones with the same property: among these are algebraic analogues of the matroid operations of deletion, contraction, direct sum, parallel connection, series connection and 2-sum. The complete monotonicity of $P^{-β}$ for some $β> 0$ can be viewed as a strong quantitative version of the half-plane property (Hurwitz stability) for $P$, and is also related to the Rayleigh property for matroids.

Fourier-Deligne transform and representations of the symmetric group
Published • View PublicationBIB
We calculate the Fourier-Deligne transform of the IC extension to ${\C}^{n+1}$ of the local system ${\mathcal L}_Λ$ on the cone over $\Conf_n(¶^1)$ associated to a representation $Λ$ of $S_n$, where the length $n-k$ of the first row of the Young diagram of $Λ$ is at least $\frac{|Λ|-1}{2}$. The answer is the IC extension to the dual vector space ${\C}^{n+1}$ of the local system ${\mathcal R}_λ$ on the cone over the $k$-th secant variety of the rational normal curve in $¶^n$, where ${\mathcal R}_λ$ corresponds to the representation $λ$ of $S_k$, the Young diagram of which is obtained from the Young diagram of $Λ$ by deleting its first row. We also prove an analogous statement for $S_n$-local systems on fibers of the Abel-Jacobi map. We use our result on the Fourier-Deligne transform to rederive a part of a result of Michel Brion on Kronecker coefficients.

Resonant bands and local system cohomology groups for real line arrangements
Published in Vietnam Journal of Mathematics, 42, (2014) 377-392 • View PublicationBIB
We give a new algorithm computing local system cohomology groups for complexified real line arrangements. Using it, we obtain several conditions for the first local system cohomology to vanish and to be at most one-dimensional, which generalize a result by Cohen-Dimca-Orlik. The conditions are described in terms of discrete geometric structures of real figures. The proof is based on a recent study on minimal cell structures. We also compute the characteristic variety of the deleted $B_3$-arrangement.

K-orbit closures on G/B as universal degeneracy loci for flagged vector bundles splitting as direct sums
Published • View PublicationBIB
We use equivariant localization and divided difference operators to determine formulas for the torus-equivariant fundamental cohomology classes of $K$-orbit closures on the flag variety $G/B$ for various symmetric pairs $(G,K)$. In type $A$, we realize the closures of $K=GL(p,\C) \times GL(q,\C)$-orbits on $GL(p+q,\C)/B$ as universal degeneracy loci for a vector bundle over a variety which is equipped with a single flag of subbundles and which splits as a direct sum of subbundles of ranks $p$ and $q$. The precise description of such a degeneracy locus relies upon knowing a set-theoretic description of $K$-orbit closures, which we provide via a detailed combinatorial analysis of the poset of "$(p,q)$-clans," which parametrize the orbit closures. We describe precisely how our formulas for the equivariant classes of $K$-orbit closures can be interpreted as formulas for the classes of such degeneracy loci in the Chern classes of the bundles involved. In the cases outside of type $A$, we suggest that the orbit closures should parametrize degeneracy loci involving a vector bundle equipped with a non-degenerate symmetric or skew-symmetric bilinear form, a single flag of subbundles which are isotropic or Lagrangian with respect to the form, and a splitting as a direct sum of subbundles with each summand satisfying some property (depending on $K$) with respect to the form. The precise description of such a degeneracy locus is conjectured for all cases in types $B$ and $C$.

Coloring triangle-free rectangle overlap graphs with $O(\log\log n)$ colors
Published in Discrete Comput.Geom. 53 (2015) 199-220 • View PublicationBIB
Recently, it was proved that triangle-free intersection graphs of $n$ line segments in the plane can have chromatic number as large as $Θ(\log\log n)$. Essentially the same construction produces $Θ(\log\log n)$-chromatic triangle-free intersection graphs of a variety of other geometric shapes---those belonging to any class of compact arc-connected sets in $\mathbb{R}^2$ closed under horizontal scaling, vertical scaling, and translation, except for axis-parallel rectangles. We show that this construction is asymptotically optimal for intersection graphs of boundaries of axis-parallel rectangles, which can be alternatively described as overlap graphs of axis-parallel rectangles. That is, we prove that triangle-free rectangle overlap graphs have chromatic number $O(\log\log n)$, improving on the previous bound of $O(\log n)$. To this end, we exploit a relationship between off-line coloring of rectangle overlap graphs and on-line coloring of interval overlap graphs. Our coloring method decomposes the graph into a bounded number of subgraphs with a tree-like structure that "encodes" strategies of the adversary in the on-line coloring problem. Then, these subgraphs are colored with $O(\log\log n)$ colors using a combination of techniques from on-line algorithms (first-fit) and data structure design (heavy-light decomposition).

Generalized Schubert Calculus
Published in Journal of the Ramanujan Mathematical Society 28A (Special Issue-2013) pp. 1-42 • Search Publication
In this paper we study the T-equivariant generalized cohomology of flag varieties using two models, the Borel model and the moment graph model. We study the differences between the Schubert classes and the Bott-Samelson classes. After setup of the general framework we compute, for classes of Schubert varieties of complex dimension <4 in rank 2 (including A_2, B_2, G_2 and A_1^{(1)}), moment graph representatives, Pieri-Chevalley formulas and products of Schubert classes. These computations generalize the computations in equivariant K-theory for rank 2 cases which are given in Griffeth-Ram arXiv:math/0405333.
Scattering Amplitudes and the Positive Grassmannian
We establish a direct connection between scattering amplitudes in planar four-dimensional theories and a remarkable mathematical structure known as the positive Grassmannian. The central physical idea is to focus on on-shell diagrams as objects of fundamental importance to scattering amplitudes. We show that the all-loop integrand in N=4 SYM is naturally represented in this way. On-shell diagrams in this theory are intimately tied to a variety of mathematical objects, ranging from a new graphical representation of permutations to a beautiful stratification of the Grassmannian G(k,n) which generalizes the notion of a simplex in projective space. All physically important operations involving on-shell diagrams map to canonical operations on permutations; in particular, BCFW deformations correspond to adjacent transpositions. Each cell of the positive Grassmannian is naturally endowed with positive coordinates and an invariant measure which determines the on-shell function associated with the diagram. This understanding allows us to classify and compute all on-shell diagrams, and give a geometric understanding for all the non-trivial relations among them. Yangian invariance of scattering amplitudes is transparently represented by diffeomorphisms of G(k,n) which preserve the positive structure. Scattering amplitudes in (1+1)-dimensional integrable systems and the ABJM theory in (2+1) dimensions can both be understood as special cases of these ideas. On-shell diagrams in theories with less (or no) supersymmetry are associated with exactly the same structures in the Grassmannian, but with a measure deformed by a factor encoding ultraviolet singularities. The Grassmannian representation of on-shell processes also gives a new understanding of the all-loop integrand for scattering amplitudes, presenting all integrands in a novel dLog form which directly reflects the underlying positive structure.

Mixing for progressions in non-abelian groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the mixing properties of progressions $(x,xg,xg^2)$, $(x,xg,xg^2,xg^3)$ of length three and four in a model class of finite non-abelian groups, namely the special linear groups $SL_d(F)$ over a finite field $F$, with $d$ bounded. For length three progressions $(x,xg,xg^2)$, we establish a strong mixing property (with error term that decays polynomially in the order $|F|$ of $F$), which among other things counts the number of such progressions in any given dense subset $A$ of $SL_d(F)$, answering a question of Gowers for this class of groups. For length four progressions $(x,xg,xg^2,xg^3)$, we establish a partial result in the $d=2$ case if the shift $g$ is restricted to be diagonalisable over the field, although in this case we do not recover polynomial bounds in the error term. Our methods include the use of the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality, the abelian Fourier transform, the Lang-Weil bound for the number of points in an algebraic variety over a finite field, some algebraic geometry, and (in the case of length four progressions) the multidimensional Szemerédi theorem.

Cyclic sieving, rotation, and geometric representation theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study rotation of invariant vectors in tensor products of minuscule representations. We define a combinatorial notion of rotation of minuscule Littelmann paths. Using affine Grassmannians, we show that this rotation action is realized geometrically as rotation of components of the Satake fibre. As a consequence, we have a basis for invariant spaces which is permuted by rotation (up to global sign). Finally, we diagonalize the rotation operator by showing that its eigenspaces are given by intersection homology of quiver varieties. As a consequence, we generalize Rhoades' work on the cyclic sieving phenomenon.

Irreducibility of q-difference operators and the knot 7_4
Published in Algebr. Geom. Topol. 13 (2013) 3261-3286 • View PublicationBIB
Our goal is to compute the minimal-order recurrence of the colored Jones polynomial of the 7_4 knot, as well as for the first four double twist knots. As a corollary, we verify the AJ Conjecture for the simplest knot 7_4 with reducible non-abelian SL(2,C) character variety. To achieve our goal, we use symbolic summation techniques of Zeilberger's holonomic systems approach and an irreducibility criterion for q-difference operators. For the latter we use an improved version of the qHyper algorithm of Abramov-Paule-Petkovsek to show that a given q-difference operator has no linear right factors. En route, we introduce exterior power Adams operations on the ring of bivariate polynomials and on the corresponding affine curves.

Arc diagram varieties

Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field and $α$, $β$, $γ$ be partitions. An algebraic group acts on the constructible set of short exact sequences of nilpotent $k$-linear operators of Jordan types $α$, $β$, and $γ$, respectively; we are interested in the stratification given by the orbits in the case where all parts of $α$ are at most 2. Geometric properties of the degeneration relation are controlled by the combinatorics of arc diagrams. The extended bubble sort algorithm is used to construct chains of orbits such that subsequent strata have dimension difference equal to one.
