The maximum cut problem on blow-ups of multiprojective spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
The maximum cut problem for a quintic del Pezzo surface ${\rm Bl}_{4}(\mathbb{P}^2)$ asks: Among all partitions of the 10 exceptional curves into two disjoint sets, what is the largest possible number of pairwise intersections? In this article we show that the answer is twelve. More generally, we obtain bounds for the maximum cut problem for the minuscule varieties $X_{a,b,c}:={\rm Bl}_{b+c}(\mathbb{P}^{c-1})^{a-1}$ studied by Mukai and Castravet-Tevelev and show that these bounds are asymptotically sharp for infinite families. We prove our results by constructing embeddings of the classes of $(-1)$-divisors on these varieties which are optimal for the semidefinite relaxation of the maximum cut problem on graphs proposed by Goemans and Williamson. These results give a new optimality property of the Weyl orbits of root systems of type $A$,$D$ and $E$.

Some enumerative results related to ascent sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
An ascent sequence is one consisting of non-negative integers in which the size of each letter is restricted by the number of ascents preceding it in the sequence. Ascent sequences have recently been shown to be related to (2+2)-free posets and a variety of other combinatorial structures. In this paper, we prove in the affirmative some recent conjectures concerning pattern avoidance for ascent sequences. Given a pattern $τ$, let $\mathcal{S}_τ(n)$ denote the set of ascent sequences of length $n$ avoiding $τ$. Here, we show that the joint distribution of the statistic pair $(\asc,\zero)$ on $\mathcal{S}_{0012}(n)$ is the same as $(\asc,\RLm)$ on the set of 132-avoiding permutations of length $n$. In particular, the ascent statistic on $\mathcal{S}_{0012}(n)$ has the Narayana distribution. We also enumerate $S_τ(n)$ when $τ=1012$ and $τ=0123$ and confirm the conjectured formulas in these cases. We combine combinatorial and algebraic techniques to prove our results, in two cases, making use of the kernel method. Finally, we discuss the case of avoiding 210 and determine two related recurrences.

Tropical Teichmuller and Siegel spaces
Published in Algebraic and Combinatorial Aspects of Tropical Geometry, Contemp. Math. 589 (2013), 45--85 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we present a unified study of the moduli space of tropical curves and Outer space which we link via period maps to the moduli space of tropical abelian varieties and the space of positive definite quadratic forms. Our work is a first step towards exhibiting Outer space and the space of positive definite quadratic forms as analogues of Teichmüller space and Siegel space, respectively, in tropical geometry. All these spaces and the maps among them are described within the category of ideal stacky fans, which we describe in detail.

The maximum likelihood degree of a very affine variety
Published in Compositio Math. 149 (2013) 1245-1266 • View PublicationBIB
We show that the maximum likelihood degree of a smooth very affine variety is equal to the signed topological Euler characteristic. This generalizes Orlik and Terao's solution to Varchenko's conjecture on complements of hyperplane arrangements to smooth very affine varieties. For very affine varieties satisfying a genericity condition at infinity, the result is further strengthened to relate the variety of critical points to the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class. The strengthened version recovers the geometric deletion-restriction formula of Denham et al. for arrangement complements, and generalizes Kouchnirenko's theorem on the Newton polytope for nondegenerate hypersurfaces.

Various Theorems on Tournaments
In this thesis we prove a variety of theorems on tournaments. A \emph{prime} tournament is a tournament $G$ such that there is no $X \subseteq V(G)$, $1 < |X| < |V(G)|$, such that for every vertex $v \in V(G) \minus X$, either $v \ra x$ for all $x \in X$ or $x \ra v$ for all $x \in X$. First, we prove that given a prime tournament $G$ which is not in one of three special families of tournaments, for any prime subtournament $H$ of $G$ with $5 \le |V(H)| < |V(G)|$ there exists a prime subtournament of $G$ with $|V(H)| + 1$ vertices that has a subtournament isomorphic to $H$. We next prove that for any two cyclic triangles $C$, $C^\prime$ in a prime tournament $G$, there is a sequence of cyclic triangles $C_1,...,C_n$ such that $C_1 = C$, $C_n = C^\prime$, and $C_i$ shares an edge with $C_{i+1}$ for all $1 \le i \le n-1$. Next, we consider what we call \emph{matching tournaments}, tournaments whose vertices can be ordered in a horizontal line so that every vertex is the head or tail of at most one edge that points right-to-left. We determine the conditions under which a tournament can have two different orderings satisfying the above conditions. We also prove that there are infinitely many minimal tournaments that are not matching tournaments. Finally, we consider the tournaments $K_n$ and $K_n^\ast$, which are obtained from the transitive tournament with $n$ vertices by reversing the edge from the second vertex to the last vertex and from the first vertex to the second-to-last vertex, respectively. We prove a structure theorem describing tournaments which exclude $K_n$ and $K_n^\ast$ as subtournaments.
Degenerate flag varieties: moment graphs and Schröder numbers
Published in JOURNAL OF ALGEBRAIC COMBINATORICS, p. 1-31, 2012 • View PublicationBIB
We study geometric and combinatorial properties of the degenerate flag varieties of type A. These varieties are acted upon by the automorphism group of a certain representation of a type A quiver, containing a maximal torus T. Using the group action, we describe the moment graphs, encoding the zero- and one-dimensional T-orbits. We also study the smooth and singular loci of the degenerate flag varieties. We show that the Euler characteristic of the smooth locus is equal to the large Schröder number and the Poincaré polynomial is given by a natural statistics counting the number of diagonal steps in a Schröder path. As an application we obtain a new combinatorial description of the large and small Schröder numbers and their q-analogues.

K-theoretic Gromov-Witten invariants of lines in homogeneous spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let X=G/P be a homogeneous space and e_k be the class of a simple coroot in H_2(X). A theorem of Strickland shows that for almost all X, the variety of pointed lines of degree e_k, denoted Z_k(X), is again a homogeneous space. For these X we show that the 3-point, genus 0, equivariant K-theoretic Gromov-Witten invariants of lines of degree e_k are equal to quantities obtained in the (ordinary) equivariant K-theory of Z_k(X). We apply this to compute the structure constants N_{u,v}^{w, e_k} for degree e_k from the multiplication of two Schubert classes in the equivariant quantum K-theory ring of X. Using geometry of spaces of lines through Schubert or Richardson varieties we prove vanishing and positivity properties of N_{u,v}^{w,e_k}. This generalizes many results about K-theory and quantum cohomology of X, and also gives new identities among the structure constants in equivariant K-theory of X.

Combinatorial degree bound for toric ideals of hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Associated to any hypergraph is a toric ideal encoding the algebraic relations among its edges. We study these ideals and the combinatorics of their minimal generators, and derive general degree bounds for both uniform and non-uniform hypergraphs in terms of balanced hypergraph bicolorings, separators, and splitting sets. In turn, this provides complexity bounds for algebraic statistical models associated to hypergraphs. As two main applications, we recover a well-known complexity result for Markov bases of arbitrary 3-way tables, and we show that the defining ideal of the tangential variety is generated by quadratics and cubics in cumulant coordinates.

Counting Algebraic Curves with Tropical Geometry
Published • View PublicationBIB
Tropical geometry is a piecewise linear "shadow" of algebraic geometry. It allows for the computation of several cohomological invariants of an algebraic variety. In particular, its application to enumerative algebraic geometry led to significant progress. In this survey, we give an introduction to tropical geometry techniques for algebraic curve counting problems. We also survey some recent developments, with a particular emphasis on the computation of the degree of the Severi varieties of the complex projective plane and other toric surfaces as well as Hurwitz numbers and applications to real enumerative geometry. This paper is based on the author's lecture at the Workshop on Tropical Geometry and Integrable Systems in Glasgow, July 2011.

Combinatorial realizations of crystals via torus actions on quiver varieties
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 39 (2014), no. 2, 271-300 • View PublicationBIB
Consider Kashiwara's crystal associated to a highest weight representation of a symmetric Kac-Moody algebra. There is a geometric realization of this object using Nakajima's quiver varieties, but in many particular cases it can also be realized by elementary combinatorial methods. Here we propose a framework for extracting combinatorial realizations from the geometric picture: We construct certain torus actions on the quiver varieties and use Morse theory to index the irreducible components by connected components of the subvariety of torus fixed points. We then discuss the case of affine sl(n). There the fixed point components are just points, and are naturally indexed by multi-partitions. There is some choice in our construction, leading to a family of combinatorial models for each highest weight crystal. Applying this construction to the crystal of the fundamental representation recovers a family of combinatorial realizations recently constructed by Fayers. This gives a more conceptual proof of Fayers' result as well as a generalization to higher level. We also discuss a relationship with Nakajima's monomial crystal.

Tropically Unirational Varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce tropically unirational varieties, which are subvarieties of tori that admit dominant rational maps whose tropicalisation is surjective. The central (and unresolved) question is whether all unirational varieties are tropically unirational. We present several techniques for proving tropical unirationality, along with various examples.

The Deodhar decomposition of the Grassmannian and the regularity of KP solitons
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a point A in the real Grassmannian, it is well-known that one can construct a soliton solution u_A(x,y,t) to the KP equation. The contour plot of such a solution provides a tropical approximation to the solution when the variables x, y, and t are considered on a large scale and the time t is fixed. In this paper we use several decompositions of the Grassmannian in order to gain an understanding of the contour plots of the corresponding soliton solutions. First we use the positroid stratification of the real Grassmannian in order to characterize the unbounded line-solitons in the contour plots at y>>0 and y<<0. Next we introduce a refinement of the positroid stratification -- the Deodhar decomposition of the Grassmannian -- which is defined to be the projection of Deodhar's decomposition of the complete flag variety. We index the components of the Deodhar decomposition of the Grassmannian by certain tableaux which we call Go-diagrams, and then use these Go-diagrams to characterize the contour plots of solitons solutions when t<<0. Finally we use these results to show that a soliton solution u_A(x,y,t) is regular for all times t if and only if A comes from the totally non-negative part of the Grassmannian.

FI-modules and stability for representations of symmetric groups
Published in Duke Math. J. 164, no. 9 (2015), 1833-1910 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we introduce and develop the theory of FI-modules. We apply this theory to obtain new theorems about: - the cohomology of the configuration space of n distinct ordered points on an arbitrary (connected, oriented) manifold - the diagonal coinvariant algebra on r sets of n variables - the cohomology and tautological ring of the moduli space of n-pointed curves - the space of polynomials on rank varieties of n x n matrices - the subalgebra of the cohomology of the genus n Torelli group generated by H^1 and more. The symmetric group S_n acts on each of these vector spaces. In most cases almost nothing is known about the characters of these representations, or even their dimensions. We prove that in each fixed degree the character is given, for n large enough, by a polynomial in the cycle-counting functions that is independent of n. In particular, the dimension is eventually a polynomial in n. In this framework, representation stability (in the sense of Church-Farb) for a sequence of S_n-representations is converted to a finite generation property for a single FI-module.

Quantum cohomology via vicious and osculating walkers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We relate the counting of rational curves intersecting Schubert varieties of the Grassmannian to the counting of certain non-intersecting lattice paths on the cylinder, so-called vicious and osculating walkers. These lattice paths form exactly solvable statistical mechanics models and are obtained from solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation. The eigenvectors of the transfer matrices of these models yield the idempotents of the Verlinde algebra of the gauged u(n)-WZNW model. The latter is known to be closely related to the small quantum cohomology ring of the Grassmannian. We establish further that the partition functions of the vicious and osculating walker model are given in terms of Postnikov's toric Schur functions and can be interpreted as generating functions for Gromov-Witten invariants.
Markov degree of the three-state toric homogeneous Markov chain model
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the three-state toric homogeneous Markov chain model (THMC) without loops and initial parameters. At time $T$, the size of the design matrix is $6 \times 3\cdot 2^{T-1}$ and the convex hull of its columns is the model polytope. We study the behavior of this polytope for $T\geq 3$ and we show that it is defined by 24 facets for all $T\ge 5$. Moreover, we give a complete description of these facets. From this, we deduce that the toric ideal associated with the design matrix is generated by binomials of degree at most 6. Our proof is based on a result due to Sturmfels, who gave a bound on the degree of the generators of a toric ideal, provided the normality of the corresponding toric variety. In our setting, we established the normality of the toric variety associated to the THMC model by studying the geometric properties of the model polytope.

Conifold degenerations of Fano 3-folds as hypersurfaces in toric varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
There exist exactly 166 4-dimensional reflexive polytopes such that the corresponding 4-dimensional Gorenstein toric Fano varieties have at worst terminal singularities in codimension 3 and their anticanonical divisor is divisible by 2. For every such a polytope, one naturally obtains a family of Fano hypersurfaces X with at worst conifold singularities. A generic 3-dimensional Fano hypersurface X can be interpreted as a flat conifold degeneration of some smooth Fano 3-folds Y whose classification up to deformation was obtained by Iskovskikh, Mori and Mukai. In this case, both Fano varieties X and Y have the same Picard number r. Using toric mirror symmetry, we define a r-dimensional generalized hypergeometric power series associated to the dual reflexive polytope. We show that if r =1 then this series is a normalized regular solution of a modular D3-equation that appears in the Golyshev correspondence. We expect that the multidimensional power series can be used to compute the small quantum cohomology ring of all Fano 3-folds Y with the Picard number r >1 if Y admit a conifold degeneration X.

Variety Evasive Sets

We give an explicit construction of a large subset of F^n, where F is a finite field, that has small intersection with any affine variety of fixed dimension and bounded degree. Our construction generalizes a recent result of Dvir and Lovett (STOC 2012) who considered varieties of degree one (affine subspaces).
Strict linear prices in non-convex European day-ahead electricity markets
Published in Optimization Methods and Software, 2014, Vol. 29, No. 1, 189-221 • View PublicationBIB
The European power grid can be divided into several market areas where the price of electricity is determined in a day-ahead auction. Market participants can provide continuous hourly bid curves and combinatorial bids with associated quantities given the prices. The goal of our auction is to maximize the economic surplus of all participants subject to quantity constraints and price constraints. The price constraints ensure that no one incurs a loss. Only traders who submitted a combinatorial bid might miss a not-realized profit. The resulting problem is a large scale mathematical program with equilibrium constraints (MPEC) and binary variables that cannot be solved efficiently by standard solvers. We present an exact algorithm and a fast heuristic for this type of problem. Both algorithms decompose the MPEC into a master problem (a MIQP) and pricing subproblems (LPs). The modeling technique and the algorithms are applicable to a wide variety of combinatorial auctions that are based on mixed integer programs.

Avoiding colored partitions of two elements in the pattern sense
Enumeration of pattern-avoiding objects is an active area of study with connections to such disparate regions of mathematics as Schubert varieties and stack-sortable sequences. Recent research in this area has brought attention to colored permutations and colored set partitions. A colored partition of a set $S$ is a partition of $S$ with each element receiving a color from the set $[k]=\{1,2,...,k\}$. Let $Π_n\wr C_k$ be the set of partitions of $[n]$ with colors from $[k]$. In an earlier work, the authors study pattern avoidance in colored set partitions in the equality sense. Here we study pattern avoidance in colored partitions in the pattern sense. We say that $σ\inΠ_n\wr C_k$ contains $π\in Π_m\wr C_\ell$ in the pattern sense if $σ$ contains a copy $π$ when the colors are ignored and the colors on this copy of $π$ are order isomorphic to the colors on $π$. Otherwise we say that $σ$ avoids $π$. We focus on patterns from $Π_2\wr C_2$ and find that many familiar and some new integer sequences appear. We provide bijective proofs wherever possible, and we provide formulas for computing those sequences that are new.

Total positivity, Schubert positivity, and Geometric Satake
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let G be a simple and simply-connected complex algebraic group, and let X \subset G^\vee be the centralizer subgroup of a principal nilpotent element. Ginzburg and Peterson independently related the ring of functions on X with the homology ring of the affine Grassmannian Gr_G. Peterson furthermore connected this ring to the quantum cohomology rings of partial flag varieties G/P. The first aim of this paper is to study three different notions of positivity on X: (1) Schubert positivity arising via Peterson's work, (2) total positivity in the sense of Lusztig, and (3) Mirkovic-Vilonen positivity obtained from the MV-cycles in Gr_G. Our first main theorem establishes that these three notions of positivity coincide. The second aim of this paper is to parametrize the totally nonnegative part of X, confirming a conjecture of the second author. In type A a substantial part of our results were previously established by the second author. The crucial new component of this paper is the connection with the affine Grassmannian and the geometric Satake correspondence.
