On the generalized lower bound conjecture for polytopes and spheres

In 1971, McMullen and Walkup posed the following conjecture, which is called the generalized lower bound conjecture: If $P$ is a simplicial $d$-polytope then its $h$-vector $(h_0,h_1,...,h_d)$ satisfies $h_0 \leq h_1 \leq ... \leq h_{\lfloor \frac d 2 \rfloor}$. Moreover, if $h_{r-1}=h_r$ for some $r \leq \frac d 2$ then $P$ can be triangulated without introducing simplices of dimension $\leq d-r$.
The first part of the conjecture was solved by Stanley in 1980 using the hard Lefschetz theorem for projective toric varieties. In this paper, we give a proof of the remaining part of the conjecture. In addition, we generalize this property to a certain class of simplicial spheres, namely those admitting the weak Lefschetz property.

Let G be a semi-simple simply connected group over complex numbers. In this paper we give a geometric definition of the (dual) Weyl modules over the group G[t] and show that their characters form an eigen-function of the lattice version of the q-Toda integrable integrable system (defined by means of the quantum group version of Kostant-Whittaker reduction due to Etingof and Sevostyanov). All the proofs are algebro-geometric and rely on our previous work which interprets the universal eigen-function of the q-Toda system in terms of rings of functions on the spaces of based quasi-maps from P^1 to the flag variety of G.
We discuss in detail the relation between the current work and the works of Cherednik, Ion, Sanderson and Gerasimov-Lebedev-Oblezin.

We identify the ring of odd symmetric functions introduced by Ellis and Khovanov as the space of skew polynomials fixed by a natural action of the Hecke algebra at q=-1. This allows us to define graded modules over the Hecke algebra at q=-1 that are `odd' analogs of the cohomology of type A Springer varieties. The graded module associated to the full flag variety corresponds to the quotient of the skew polynomial ring by the left ideal of nonconstant odd symmetric functions. The top degree component of the odd cohomology of Springer varieties is identified with the corresponding Specht module of the Hecke algebra at q=-1.
A graphical calculus for 2-block Spaltenstein varieties
We generalise statements known about Springer fibres associated to nilpotents with 2 Jordan blocks to Spaltenstein varieties. We study the geometry of generalised irreducible components (i.e. Bialynicki-Birula cells) and their pairwise intersections. In particular we develop a graphical calculus which encodes their structure as iterated fibre bundles with CP^1 as base spaces and compute their cohomology. At the end we present a connection with coloured cobordisms generalising a construction of Khovanov and Stroppel.

Our starting point is a very simple one, namely that of a set L_4 of four mutually skew lines in PG(7,2): Under the natural action of the stabilizer group G(L_4) < GL(8,2) the 255 points of PG(7,2) fall into four orbits omega_1, omega_2, omega_3 omega_4; of respective lengths 12, 54, 108, 81: We show that the 135 points in omega_2 \cup omega_4 are the internal points of a hyperbolic quadric H_7 determined by L_4; and that the 81-set omega_4 (which is shown to have a sextic equation) is an orbit of a normal subgroup G_81 isomorphic to (Z_3)^4 of G(L_4): There are 40 subgroups (isomorphic to (Z_3)^3) of G_81; and each such subgroup H < G_81 gives rise to a decomposition of omega_4 into a triplet of 27-sets. We show in particular that the constituents of precisely 8 of these 40 triplets are Segre varieties S_3(2) in PG(7,2): This ties in with the recent finding that each Segre S = S_3(2) in PG(7,2) determines a distinguished Z_3 subgroup of GL(8,2) which generates two sibling copies S'; S" of S.

We study curves consisting of unions of projective lines whose intersections are given by graphs. Under suitable hypotheses on the graph, these so-called \emph{graph curves} can be embedded in projective space as line arrangements. We discuss property $N_p$ for these embeddings and are able to produce products of linear forms that generate the ideal in certain cases. We also briefly discuss questions regarding the higher-dimensional subspace arrangements obtained by taking the secant varieties of graph curves.
Sharp Concentration of Hitting Size for Random Set Systems
Consider the random set system of {1,2,...,n}, where each subset in the power set is chosen independently with probability p. A set H is said to be a hitting set if it intersects each chosen set. The second moment method is used to exhibit the sharp concentration of the minimal size of H for a variety of values of p.

We construct oriented matroids of rank 3 on 13 points whose realization spaces are disconnected. They are defined on smaller points than the known examples with this property. Moreover, we construct the one on 13 points whose realization space is a connected and non-irreducible semialgebraic variety.

Using an action of the Richardson-Springer monoid on involutions, we study the weak order on the variety of complete quadrics. Maximal chains in the poset are explicitly determined. Applying results of Brion, our calculations describe certain cohomology classes in the complete flag variety.

We prove that whenever A is a 3-conservative relational structure with only binary and unary relations then the algebra of polymorphisms of A either has no Taylor operation (i.e. CSP(A) is NP-complete), or generates a congruence meet semidistributive variety (i.e. CSP(A) has bounded width).
Classification of Indecomposable Flows of Signed Graphs
An indecomposable flow $f$ on a signed graph $Σ$ is a nontrivial integral flow that cannot be decomposed into $f=f_1+f_2$, where $f_1,f_2$ are nontrivial integral flows having the same sign (both $\geq 0$ or both $\leq 0$) at each edge of $Σ$. This paper is to classify indecomposable flows into characteristic vectors of circuits and Eulerian cycle-trees --- a class of signed graphs having a kind of tree structure in which all cycles can be viewed as vertices of a tree. Moreover, each indecomposable flow other than circuit characteristic vectors can be further decomposed into a sum of certain half circuit characteristic vectors having the same sign at each edge. The variety of indecomposable flows of signed graphs is much richer than that of ordinary unsigned graphs.

We prove three conjectures concerning the evaluation of determinants, which are related to the counting of plane partitions and rhombus tilings. One of them was posed by George Andrews in 1980, the other two were by Guoce Xin and Christian Krattenthaler. Our proofs employ computer algebra methods, namely, the holonomic ansatz proposed by Doron Zeilberger and variations thereof. These variations make Zeilberger's original approach even more powerful and allow for addressing a wider variety of determinants. Finally, we present, as a challenge problem, a conjecture about a closed-form evaluation of Andrews's determinant.

We give three interpretations of the number $b$ of orbits of the Borel subgroup of upper triangular matrices on the variety $\ms{X}$ of complete quadrics. First, we show that $b$ is equal to the number of standard Young tableaux on skew-diagrams. Then, we relate $b$ to certain values of a modified Hermite polynomial. Third, we relate $b$ to a certain cell decomposition on $\ms{X}$ previously studied by De Concini, Springer, and Strickland. Using these, we give asymptotic estimates for $b$ as the dimension of the quadrics increases.
Which Schubert varieties are local complete intersections?

We characterize by pattern avoidance the Schubert varieties for GL_n which are local complete intersections (lci). For those Schubert varieties which are local complete intersections, we give an explicit minimal set of equations cutting out their neighborhoods at the identity. Although the statement of our characterization only requires ordinary pattern avoidance, showing that the Schubert varieties not satisfying our conditions are not lci appears to require working with more general notions of pattern avoidance. The Schubert varieties defined by inclusions, originally introduced by Gasharov and Reiner, turn out to be an important subclass, and we further develop some of their combinatorics. Applications include formulas for Kostant polynomials and presentations of cohomology rings for lci Schubert varieties.
Higher order duality and toric embeddings

The notion of higher order dual varieties of a projective variety is a natural generalization of the classical notion of projective duality, introduced by Piene in 1983. In this paper we study higher order dual varieties of projective toric embeddings. We compute the degree of the second dual variety of a smooth toric threefold in geometric and combinatorial terms, and we classify smooth 2-jet spanned projective embeddings of smooth threefolds whose second dual variety has dimension less than expected. We also describe the tropicalization of the k-th dual variety of an equivariantly embedded (not necessarily normal) toric variety.

Consider arbitrarily parenthesized expressions on the $k$ variables $x_0, x_1, ..., x_{k-1}$, where each $x_i$ appears exactly once and in the order of their indices. We call these expressions {\em formal $k$--products}. $F^σ(k)$ denotes the set of formal $k$--products. For ${{\bf u},{\bf v}}\subseteq F^σ(k)$, the claim, that ${\bf u}$ and ${\bf v}$ produce equal elements in a groupoid $G$ for all values assumed in $G$ by the variables $x_i$, attributes to $G$ a {\em generalized associative law}. Many groupoids are {\em completely dissociative}; i.e., no generalized associative law holds for them; two examples are the groupoids on ${0,1}$ whose binary operations are implication and NAND. We prove a variety of results of that flavor.
Positroid Varieties: Juggling and Geometry

While the intersection of the Grassmannian Bruhat decompositions for all coordinate flags is an intractable mess, the intersection of only the cyclic shifts of one Bruhat decomposition turns out to have many of the good properties of the Bruhat and Richardson decompositions. This decomposition coincides with the projection of the Richardson stratification of the flag manifold, studied by Lusztig, Rietsch, Brown-Goodearl-Yakimov and the present authors. However, its cyclic-invariance is hidden in this description. Postnikov gave many cyclic-invariant ways to index the strata, and we give a new one, by a subset of the affine Weyl group we call bounded juggling patterns. We call the strata positroid varieties.
Applying results from the authors' previous work, we show that positroid varieties are normal, Cohen-Macaulay, have rational singularities, and are defined as schemes by the vanishing of Plucker coordinates. We prove that their associated cohomology classes are represented by affine Stanley functions. This last fact lets us connect Postnikov's and Buch-Kresch-Tamvakis' approaches to quantum Schubert calculus.

Tropical decomposition of Young's partition lattice

Young's partition lattice $L(m,n)$ consists of unordered partitions having $m$ parts where each part is at most $n$. Using methods from complex algebraic geometry, R. Stanley proved that $L(m,n)$ is rank-symmetric, unimodal, and strongly Sperner. Moreover, he conjectured that $L(m,n)$ has a stronger property called symmetric chain decomposition. Despite many efforts, this conjecture has only been proved for $\min(m,n)\leq 4$. In this paper, we decompose $L(m,n)$ into level sets for certain tropical polynomials derived from the secant varieties of the rational normal curve in projective space, and we find that the resulting subposets have an elementary raising and lowering algorithm. As a corollary, we obtain a symmetric chain decomposition for the subposet of $L(m,n)$ consisting of "sufficiently generic" partitions.
