"Spectral implies Tiling" for Three Intervals Revisited
Published • View PublicationBIB
In \cite{BCKM} it was shown that "Tiling implies Spectral" holds for a union of three intervals and the reverse implication was studied under certain restrictive hypotheses on the associated spectrum. In this paper, we reinvestigate the "Spectral implies Tiling" part of Fuglede's conjecture for the three interval case. We first show that the "Spectral implies Tiling" for two intervals follows from the simple fact that two distinct circles have at most two points of intersections. We then attempt this for the case of three intervals and except for one situation are able to prove "Spectral implies Tiling". Finally, for the exceptional case, we show a connection to a problem of generalized Vandermonde varieties.

Classical aspects of quantum cohomology of generalized flag varieties

We show that various genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants for flag varieties representing different homology classes are indeed the same. In particular, many of them are classical intersection numbers of Schubert cycles.

Standard Monomial Theory for desingularized Richardson varieties in the flag variety GL(n)/B
Published in Transform. Groups 18 (2013), no. 2, 329-359 • View PublicationBIB
We consider a desingularization Gamma of a Richardson variety X_w^v=X_w \cap X^v in the flag variety Fl(n)=GL(n)/B, obtained as a fibre of a projection from a certain Bott-Samelson variety Z. We then construct a basis of the homogeneous coordinate ring of Gamma inside Z, indexed by combinatorial objects which we call w_0-standard tableaux.

The sizes of the intersection of two unitals in PG$(2,q^2)$
We show that the size of the intersection of a Hermitian variety in $\PG(n,q^2)$, and any set satisfying an $r$-dimensional-subspace intersection property, is congruent to 1 modulo a power of $p$. In particular, in the case where $n=2$, if the two sets are a Hermitian unital and any other unital, the size of the intersection is congruent to 1 modulo $\sqrt q$ or modulo $\sqrt{pq}$. If the second unital is a Buekenhout-Metz unital, we show that the size is congruent to 1 modulo $q$.

Families of twisted tensor product codes
Published in Designs, Codes and Cryptography June 2013, Volume 67, Issue 3, pp 375-384 • View PublicationBIB
Using geometric properties of the variety $\cV_{r,t}$, the image under the Grassmannian map of a Desarguesian $(t-1)$-spread of $\PG(rt-1,q)$, we introduce error correcting codes related to the twisted tensor product construction, producing several families of constacyclic codes. We exactly determine the parameters of these codes and characterise the words of minimum weight.

Closures of K-orbits in the flag variety for GL(2n)

We characterize the O_{2n} orbits in the flag variety for GL_{2n} with rationally smooth closure via a graph-theoretic criterion. We also give a necessary pattern avoidance criterion for rational smoothness and conjecture its sufficiency.

Chromatic quasisymmetric functions and Hessenberg varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
We discuss three distinct topics of independent interest; one in enumerative combinatorics, one in symmetric function theory, and one in algebraic geometry. The topic in enumerative combinatorics concerns a q-analog of a generalization of the Eulerian polynomials, the one in symmetric function theory deals with a refinement of the chromatic symmetric functions of Stanley, and the one in algebraic geometry deals with Tymoczko's representation of the symmetric group on the cohomology of the regular semisimple Hessenberg variety of type A. Our purpose is to explore some remarkable connections between these topics.

Comparing Perfect and 2nd Voronoi decompositions: the matroidal locus
Published in Math. Ann. 354 (2012), no. 4, 1521--1554 • View PublicationBIB
We compare two rational polyhedral admissible decompositions of the cone of positive definite quadratic forms: the perfect cone decomposition and the 2nd Voronoi decomposition. We determine which cones belong to both the decompositions, thus providing a positive answer to a conjecture of V. Alexeev and A. Brunyate. As an application, we compare the two associated toroidal compactifications of the moduli space of principal polarized abelian varieties: the perfect cone compactification and the 2nd Voronoi compactification.

Quantum cohomology and the Satake isomorphism
We prove that the geometric Satake correspondence admits quantum corrections for minuscule Grassmannians of Dynkin types $A$ and $D$. We find, as a corollary, that the quantum connection of a spinor variety $OG(n,2n)$ can be obtained as the half-spinorial representation of that of the quadric $Q_{2n-2}$. We view the (quantum) cohomology of these Grassmannians as endowed simultaneously with two structures, one of a module over the algebra of symmetric functions, and the other, of a module over the Langlands dual Lie algebra, and investigate the interaction between the two. In particular, we study primitive classes $y$ in the cohomology of a minuscule Grassmannian $G/P$ that are characterized by the condition that the operator of cup product by $y$ is in the image of the Lie algebra action. Our main result states that quantum correction preserves primitivity. We provide a quantum counterpart to a result obtained by V. Ginzburg in the classical setting by giving explicit formulas for the quantum corrections to homogeneous primitive elements.

Projected Richardson varieties and affine Schubert varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a complex quasi-simple algebraic group and $G/P$ be a partial flag variety. The projections of Richardson varieties from the full flag variety form a stratification of $G/P$. We show that the closure partial order of projected Richardson varieties agrees with that of a subset of Schubert varieties in the affine flag variety of $G$. Furthermore, we compare the torus-equivariant cohomology and $K$-theory classes of these two stratifications by pushing or pulling these classes to the affine Grassmannian. Our work generalizes results of Knutson, Lam, and Speyer for the Grassmannian of type $A$.
Quiver Grassmannians and degenerate flag varieties
Published in ALGEBRA & NUMBER THEORY, vol. 6, p. 165-194, 2012 • View PublicationBIB
Quiver Grassmannians are varieties parametrizing subrepresentations of a quiver representation. It is observed that certain quiver Grassmannians for type A quivers are isomorphic to the degenerate flag varieties investigated earlier by the second named author. This leads to the consideration of a class of Grassmannians of subrepresentations of the direct sum of a projective and an injective representation of a Dynkin quiver. It is proven that these are (typically singular) irreducible normal local complete intersection varieties, which admit a group action with finitely many orbits, and a cellular decomposition. For type A quivers explicit formulas for the Euler characteristic (the median Genocchi numbers) and the Poincare polynomials are derived.

Cyclic sieving of finite Grassmannians and flag varieties
Published in Discrete Mathematics, Volume 312, Issue 5, 6 March 2012, Pages 898-910 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we prove instances of the cyclic sieving phenomenon for finite Grassmannians and partial flag varieties, which carry the action of various tori in the finite general linear group GL_n(F_q). The polynomials involved are sums of certain weights of the minimal length parabolic coset representatives of the symmetric group S_n, where the weight of a coset representative can be written as a product over its inversions.

Combinatorial expansions in K-theoretic bases
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the class $\mathcal C$ of symmetric functions whose coefficients in the Schur basis can be described by generating functions for sets of tableaux with fixed shape. Included in this class are the Hall-Littlewood polynomials, $k$-atoms, and Stanley symmetric functions; functions whose Schur coefficients encode combinatorial, representation theoretic and geometric information. While Schur functions represent the cohomology of the Grassmannian variety of $GL_n$, Grothendieck functions $\{G_λ\}$ represent the $K$-theory of the same space. In this paper, we give a combinatorial description of the coefficients when any element of $\mathcal C$ is expanded in the $G$-basis or the basis dual to $\{G_λ\}$.
Symplectic degenerate flag varieties
Published in Can. J. Math.-J. Can. Math. 66 (2014) 1250-1286 • View PublicationBIB
Let $\SF^a_λ$ be the degenerate symplectic flag variety. These are projective singular irreducible $\bG_a^M$ degenerations of the classical flag varieties for symplectic group $Sp_{2n}$. We give an explicit construction for the varieties $\SF^a_λ$ and construct their desingularizations, similar to the Bott-Samelson resolutions in the classical case. We prove that $\SF^a_\la$ are normal locally complete intersections with terminal and rational singularities. We also show that these varieties are Frobenius split. Using the above mentioned results, we prove an analogue of the Borel-Weil-Bott theorem and obtain a $q$-character formula for the characters of irreducible $Sp_{2n}$-modules via the Atiyah-Bott-Lefschetz fixed points formula.

Algebraic and combinatorial Brill-Noether theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
The interplay between algebro-geometric and combinatorial Brill-Noether theory is studied. The Brill-Noether variety of a graph shown to be non-empty if the Brill-Noether number is non-negative, as a consequence of the analogous fact for smooth projective curves. Similarly, the existence of a graph for which the Brill-Noether variety is empty implies the emptiness of the corresponding Brill-Noether variety for a general curve. The main tool is a refinement of Baker's Specialization Lemma.

A combinatorial description of the Gindikin-Karpelevich formula in type A
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A. 119 (2012), 1081-1094 • View PublicationBIB
A combinatorial description of the crystal $\mathcal{B}(\infty)$ for finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras in terms of Young tableaux was developed by J. Hong and H. Lee. Using this description, we obtain a combinatorial rule for expressing the Gindikin-Karpelevich formula as a sum over $\mathcal{B}(\infty)$ when the underlying Lie algebra is of type A. We also interpret our description in terms of MV polytopes and irreducible components of quiver varieties.
Algebraic/combinatorial proofs of Cayley-type identities for derivatives of determinants and pfaffians
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics 50, 474--594 (2013) • View PublicationBIB
The classic Cayley identity states that \det(\partial) (\det X)^s = s(s+1)...(s+n-1) (\det X)^{s-1} where X=(x_{ij}) is an n-by-n matrix of indeterminates and \partial=(\partial/\partial x_{ij}) is the corresponding matrix of partial derivatives. In this paper we present straightforward combinatorial proofs of a variety of Cayley-type identities, both old and new. The most powerful of these proofs employ Grassmann algebra (= exterior algebra) and Grassmann-Berezin integration. Among the new identities proven here are a pair of "diagonal-parametrized" Cayley identities, a pair of "Laplacian-parametrized" Cayley identities, and the "product-parametrized" and "border-parametrized" rectangular Cayley identities.

Large deviations for the degree structure in preferential attachment schemes
Published in Annals of Applied Probability 2013, Vol. 23, No. 2, 722-763 • View PublicationBIB
Preferential attachment schemes, where the selection mechanism is linear and possibly time-dependent, are considered, and an infinite-dimensional large deviation principle for the sample path evolution of the empirical degree distribution is found by Dupuis-Ellis-type methods. Interestingly, the rate function, which can be evaluated, contains a term which accounts for the cost of assigning a fraction of the total degree to an "infinite" degree component, that is, when an atypical "condensation" effect occurs with respect to the degree structure. As a consequence of the large deviation results, a sample path a.s. law of large numbers for the degree distribution is deduced in terms of a coupled system of ODEs from which power law bounds for the limiting degree distribution are given. However, by analyzing the rate function, one can see that the process can deviate to a variety of atypical nonpower law distributions with finite cost, including distributions typically associated with sub and superlinear selection models.

Cohomological and Combinatorial Methods in the Study of Symbolic Powers and Equations defining Varieties
In this PhD thesis we will discuss some aspects in Commutative Algebra which have interactions with Algebraic Geometry, Representation Theory and Combinatorics. In particular, in the first chapter we will focus on understanding when certain cohomology modules vanish, a classical problem raised by Grothendieck. In the second chapter we will use local cohomology to study the connectedness behavior during a Groebner deformation and the arithmetical rank of certain varieties. In the third chapter, we will investigate the relations between the minors of a fixed size of a generic matrix by using tools from the representation theory of the general linear group (the results of this chapter will appear in a joint paper with Bruns and Conca). In the last chapter we will use combinatorial methods to study the Cohen-Macaulay property of the symbolic powers of Stanley-Reisner ideals. In the thesis are included five appendixes with some basic needed facts and a preliminary chapter introducing to local cohomology.
Arithmetic geometry of toric varieties. Metrics, measures and heights
Published in Asterisque vol. 360 (2014) • View PublicationBIB
We show that the height of a toric variety with respect to a toric metrized line bundle can be expressed as the integral over a polytope of a certain adelic family of concave functions. To state and prove this result, we study the Arakelov geometry of toric varieties. In particular, we consider models over a discrete valuation ring, metrized line bundles, and their associated measures and heights. We show that these notions can be translated in terms of convex analysis, and are closely related to objects like polyhedral complexes, concave functions, real Monge-Ampère measures, and Legendre-Fenchel duality. We also present a closed formula for the integral over a polytope of a function of one variable composed with a linear form. This allows us to compute the height of toric varieties with respect to some interesting metrics arising from polytopes. We also compute the height of toric projective curves with respect to the Fubini-Study metric, and of some toric bundles.
