We study semigroups of labellings associated to a graph. These generalize the Jukes-Cantor model and phylogenetic toric varieties defined by Buczyńska. Our main theorem bounds the degree of the generators of the semigroup by g+1 when the graph has first Betti number g. Also, we provide a series of examples where the bound is sharp.
Equivariant Pieri Rule for the homology of the affine Grassmannian

An explicit rule is given for the product of the degree two class with an arbitrary Schubert class in the torus-equivariant homology of the affine Grassmannian. In addition a Pieri rule (the Schubert expansion of the product of a special Schubert class with an arbitrary one) is established for the equivariant homology of the affine Grassmannians of SL_n and a similar formula is conjectured for Sp_{2n} and SO_{2n+1}. For SL_n the formula is explicit and positive. By a theorem of Peterson these compute certain products of Schubert classes in the torus-equivariant quantum cohomology of flag varieties. The SL_n Pieri rule is used in our recent definition of k-double Schur functions and affine double Schur functions.

Let G be an exceptional simple algebraic group, and let T be a maximal torus in G. In this paper, for every such G, we find all simple rational G-modules V with the following property: for every vector v in V, the closure of its T-orbit is a normal affine variety. For all G-modules without this property we present a T-orbit with the non-normal closure. To solve this problem, we use a combinatorial criterion of normality formulated in the terms of weights of a simple G-module. This paper continues two papers of the second author, where the same problem was solved for classical linear groups.

In this paper we give a combinatorial view on the adjunction theory of toric varieties. Inspired by classical adjunction theory of polarized algebraic varieties we define two convex-geometric notions: the Q-codegree and the nef value of a rational polytope P. We define the adjoint polytope P^(s) as the set of those points in P, whose lattice distance to every facet of P is at least s. We prove a structure theorem for lattice polytopes P with high Q-codegree. If P^(s) is empty for some s < 2/(dim(P)+2), then the lattice polytope P has lattice width one. This has consequences in Ehrhart theory and on polarized toric varieties with dual defect. Moreover, we illustrate how classification results in adjunction theory can be translated into new classification results for lattice polytopes.
Generalized Frobenius numbers: Bounds and average behavior

We produce new upper and lower bounds for the s-Frobenius number by relating it to the so called s-covering radius of a certain convex body with respect to a certain lattice; this generalizes a well-known theorem of R. Kannan for the classical Frobenius number. Using these bounds, we obtain results on the average behavior of the s-Frobenius number, extending analogous recent investigations for the classical Frobenius number by a variety of authors. We also derive bounds on the s-covering radius, an interesting geometric quantity in its own right.
Implicitization of surfaces via geometric tropicalization
In this paper we further develop the theory of geometric tropicalization due to Hacking, Keel and Tevelev and we describe tropical methods for implicitization of surfaces. More precisely, we enrich this theory with a combinatorial formula for tropical multiplicities of regular points in arbitrary dimension and we prove a conjecture of Sturmfels and Tevelev regarding sufficient combinatorial conditions to compute tropical varieties via geometric tropicalization. Using these two results, we extend previous work of Sturmfels, Tevelev and Yu for tropical implicitization of generic surfaces, and we provide methods for approaching the non-generic cases.

We show that $m$ points and $n$ smooth algebraic surfaces of bounded degree in $\mathbb{R}^3$ satisfying suitable nondegeneracy conditions can have at most $O(m^{\frac{2k}{3k-1}}n^{\frac{3k-3}{3k-1}}+m+n)$ incidences, provided that any collection of $k$ points have at most O(1) surfaces passing through all of them, for some $k\geq 3$. In the case where the surfaces are spheres and no three spheres meet in a common circle, this implies there are $O((mn)^{3/4} + m +n)$ point-sphere incidences. This is a slight improvement over the previous bound of $O((mn)^{3/4} β(m,n)+ m +n)$ for $β(m,n)$ an (explicit) very slowly growing function. We obtain this bound by using the discrete polynomial ham sandwich theorem to cut $\mathbb{R}^3$ into open cells adapted to the set of points, and within each cell of the decomposition we apply a Turan-type theorem to obtain crude control on the number of point-surface incidences. We then perform a second polynomial ham sandwich decomposition on the irreducible components of the variety defined by the first decomposition. As an application, we obtain a new bound on the maximum number of unit distances amongst $m$ points in $\mathbb{R}^3$.
On polynomial representation functions for multilinear forms
Given an infinite sequence of positive integers $\cA$, we prove that for every nonnegative integer $k$ the number of solutions of the equation $n=a_1+...+a_k$, $a_1,\,..., a_k\in \cA$, is not constant for $n$ large enough. This result is a corollary of our main theorem, which partially answers a question of Sárközy and Sós on representation functions for multilinear forms. Additionally, we obtain an Erdős-Fuchs type result for a wide variety of representation functions.
Log-concavity of characteristic polynomials and the Bergman fan of matroids

In a recent paper, the first author proved the log-concavity of the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of a matroid realizable over a field of characteristic 0, answering a long-standing conjecture of Read in graph theory. We extend the proof to all realizable matroids, making progress towards a more general conjecture of Rota-Heron-Welsh. Our proof follows from an identification of the coefficients of the reduced characteristic polynomial as answers to particular intersection problems on a toric variety. The log-concavity then follows from an inequality of Hodge type.
Analytic continuation of a parametric polytope and wall-crossing

We define a set theoretic "analytic continuation" of a polytope defined by inequalities. For the regular values of the parameter, our construction coincides with the parallel transport of polytopes in a mirage introduced by Varchenko. We determine the set-theoretic variation when crossing a wall in the parameter space, and we relate this variation to Paradan's wall-crossing formulas for integrals and discrete sums. As another application, we refine the theorem of Brion on generating functions of polytopes and their cones at vertices. We describe the relation of this work with the equivariant index of a line bundle over a toric variety and Morelli constructible support function.
Wronskians, cyclic group actions, and ribbon tableaux

The Wronski map is a finite, PGL_2(C)-equivariant morphism from the Grassmannian Gr(d,n) to a projective space (the projectivization of a vector space of polynomials). We consider the following problem. If C_r < PGL_2(C) is a cyclic subgroup of order r, how may C_r-fixed points are in the in a fibre of the Wronski map over a C_r-fixed point in the base?
In this paper, we compute a general answer in terms of r-ribbon tableaux. When r=2, this computation gives the number of real points in the fibre of the Wronski map over a real polynomial with purely imaginary roots. More generally, we can compute the number of real points in certain intersections of Schubert varieties.
When r divides d(n-d) our main result says that the generic number of C_r-fixed points in the fibre is the number of standard r-ribbon tableaux rectangular shape (n-d)^d. Computing by a different method, we show that the answer in this case is also given by the number of of standard Young tableaux of shape (n-d)^d that are invariant under N/r iterations of jeu de taquin promotion. Together, these two results give a new proof of Rhoades' cyclic sieving theorem for promotion on rectangular tableaux.
We prove analogous results for dihedral group actions.

Let $\R$ be a real closed field, $\mathcal{P},\mathcal{Q} \subset \R[X_1,...,X_k]$ finite subsets of polynomials, with the degrees of the polynomials in $\mathcal{P}$ (resp. $\mathcal{Q}$) bounded by $d$ (resp. $d_0$). Let $V \subset \R^k$ be the real algebraic variety defined by the polynomials in $\mathcal{Q}$ and suppose that the real dimension of $V$ is bounded by $k'$. We prove that the number of semi-algebraically connected components of the realizations of all realizable sign conditions of the family $\mathcal{P}$ on $V$ is bounded by $$ \displaylines{\sum_{j=0}^{k'}4^j{s +1\choose j}F_{d,d_0,k,k'}(j),}$$ where $s = \card \; \mathcal{P}$, and $$F_{d,d_0,k,k'}(j)= \textstyle\binom{k+1}{k-k'+j+1} \;(2d_0)^{k-k'}d^j\; \max{2d_0,d}^{k'-j} +2(k-j+1) .$$
In case $2 d_0 \leq d$, the above bound can be written simply as $$ \displaylines{\sum_{j = 0}^{k'} {s+1 \choose j}d^{k'} d_0^{k-k'} O(1)^{k} = (sd)^{k'} d_0^{k-k'} O(1)^k} $$ (in this form the bound was suggested by J. Matousek. Our result improves in certain cases (when $d_0 \ll d$) the best known bound of $$ \sum_{1 \leq j \leq k'}
\binom{s}{j} 4^{j} d(2d-1)^{k-1} $$ on the same number proved earlier in the case $d=d_0$.
The distinction between the bound $d_0$ on the degrees of the polynomials defining the variety $V$ and the bound $d$ on the degrees of the polynomials in $\mathcal{P}$ that appears in the new bound is motivated by several applications in discrete geometry.
Diameters of random circulant graphs

The diameter of a graph measures the maximal distance between any pair of vertices. The diameters of many small-world networks, as well as a variety of other random graph models, grow logarithmically in the number of nodes. In contrast, the worst connected networks are cycles whose diameters increase linearly in the number of nodes. In the present study we consider an intermediate class of examples: Cayley graphs of cyclic groups, also known as circulant graphs or multi-loop networks. We show that the diameter of a random circulant 2k-regular graph with n vertices scales as n^{1/k}, and establish a limit theorem for the distribution of their diameters. We obtain analogous results for the distribution of the average distance and higher moments.
Nonlocal, noncommutative diagrammatics and the linked cluster Theorems

Recent developments in quantum chemistry, perturbative quantum field theory, statistical physics or stochastic differential equations require the introduction of new families of Feynman-type diagrams. These new families arise in various ways. In some generalizations of the classical diagrams, the notion of Feynman propagator is extended to generalized propagators connecting more than two vertices of the graphs. In some others (introduced in the present article), the diagrams, associated to noncommuting product of operators inherit from the noncommutativity of the products extra graphical properties. The purpose of the present article is to introduce a general way of dealing with such diagrams. We prove in particular a "universal" linked cluster theorem and introduce, in the process, a Feynman-type "diagrammatics" that allows to handle simultaneously nonlocal (Coulomb-type) interactions, the generalized diagrams arising from the study of interacting systems (such as the ones where the ground state is not the vacuum but e.g. a vacuum perturbed by a magnetic or electric field, by impurities...) or Wightman fields (that is, expectation values of products of interacting fields). Our diagrammatics seems to be the first attempt to encode in a unified algebraic framework such a wide variety of situations. In the process, we promote two ideas. First, Feynman-type diagrammatics belong mathematically to the theory of linear forms on combinatorial Hopf algebras. Second, linked cluster-type theorems rely ultimately on Möbius inversion on the partition lattice. The two theories should therefore be introduced and presented accordingly

Let Y be a divisor on a smooth algebraic variety X. We investigate the geometry of the Jacobian scheme of Y, homological invariants derived from logarithmic differential forms along Y, and their relationship with the property that Y is a free divisor.
We consider arrangements of hyperplanes as a source of examples and counterexamples. In particular, we make a complete calculation of the local cohomology of logarithmic forms of generic hyperplane arrangements.

In this paper, we consider terminal reflexive polytopes arising from finite directed graphs and study the problem of deciding which directed graphs yield smooth Fano polytopes. We show that any centrally symmetric or pseudo-symmetric smooth Fano polytopes can be obtained from directed graphs. Moreover, by using directed graphs, we provide new examples of smooth Fano polytopes whose corresponding varieties admit Kähler--Einstein metrics.
Binary Cumulant Varieties

Algebraic statistics for binary random variables is concerned with highly structured algebraic varieties in the space of 2x2x...x2-tensors. We demonstrate the advantages of representing such varieties in the coordinate system of binary cumulants. Our primary focus lies on hidden subset models. Parametrizations and implicit equations in cumulants are derived for hyperdeterminants, for secant and tangential varieties of Segre varieties, and for certain context-specific independence models. Extending work of Rota and collaborators, we explore the polynomial inequalities satisfied by cumulants.
Avoiding Colored Partitions of Lengths Two and Three
Pattern avoidance in the symmetric group $S_n$ has provided a number of useful connections between seemingly unrelated problems from stack-sorting to Schubert varieties. Recent work has generalized these results to $S_n\wr C_c$, the objects of which can be viewed as "colored permutations".
Another body of research that has grown from the study of pattern avoidance in permutations is pattern avoidance in $Π_n$, the set of set partitions of $[n]$. Pattern avoidance in set partitions is a generalization of the well-studied notion of noncrossing partitions.
Motivated by recent results in pattern avoidance in $S_n \wr C_c$ we provide a catalog of initial results for pattern avoidance in colored partitions, $Π_n \wr C_c$. We note that colored set partitions are not a completely new concept. \emph{Signed} (2-colored) set partitions appear in the work of Björner and Wachs involving the homology of partition lattices. However, we seek to study these objects in a new enumerative context.

It was shown by van Rees \cite{vR} that a latin square of order $n$ has at most $n^2(n-1)/18$ latin subsquares of order $3$. He conjectured that this bound is only achieved if $n$ is a power of $3$. We show that it can only be achieved if $n\equiv3\bmod6$. We also state several conditions that are equivalent to achieving the van Rees bound. One of these is that the Cayley table of a loop achieves the van Rees bound if and only if every loop isotope has exponent $3$. We call such loops \emph{van Rees loops} and show that they form an equationally defined variety.
We also show that (1) In a van Rees loop, any subloop of index 3 is normal, (2) There are exactly 6 nonassociative van Rees loops of order $27$ with a non-trivial nucleus and at least 1 with all nuclei trivial, (3) Every commutative van Rees loop has the weak inverse property and (4) For each van Rees loop there is an associated family of Steiner quasigroups.
