Generalizing Tanisaki's ideal via ideals of truncated symmetric functions
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 37 (2013), 167--199 • View PublicationBIB
We define a family of ideals $I_h$ in the polynomial ring $\mathbb{Z}[x_1,...,x_n]$ that are parametrized by Hessenberg functions $h$ (equivalently Dyck paths or ample partitions). The ideals $I_h$ generalize algebraically a family of ideals called the Tanisaki ideal, which is used in a geometric construction of permutation representations called Springer theory. To define $I_h$, we use polynomials in a proper subset of the variables ${x_1,...,x_n}$ that are symmetric under the corresponding permutation subgroup. We call these polynomials {\em truncated symmetric functions} and show combinatorial identities relating different kinds of truncated symmetric polynomials. We then prove several key properties of $I_h$, including that if $h>h'$ in the natural partial order on Dyck paths then $I_{h} \subset I_{h'}$, and explicitly construct a Gröbner basis for $I_h$. We use a second family of ideals $J_h$ for which some of the claims are easier to see, and prove that $I_h = J_h$. The ideals $J_h$ arise in work of Ding, Develin-Martin-Reiner, and Gasharov-Reiner on a family of Schubert varieties called partition varieties. Using earlier work of the first author, the current manuscript proves that the ideals $I_h = J_h$ generalize the Tanisaki ideals both algebraically and geometrically, from Springer varieties to a family of nilpotent Hessenberg varieties.
Loop models, random matrices and planar algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define matrix models that converge to the generating functions of a wide variety of loop models with fugacity taken in sets with an accumulation point. The latter can also be seen as moments of a non-commutative law on a subfactor planar algebra. We apply this construction to compute the generating functions of the Potts model on a random planar map.
The Enumeration of Prudent Polygons by Area and its Unusual Asymptotics
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory A, vol. 118 (2011) 2261-2290 • View PublicationBIB
Prudent walks are special self-avoiding walks that never take a step towards an already occupied site, and \emph{$k$-sided prudent walks} (with $k=1,2,3,4$) are, in essence, only allowed to grow along $k$ directions. Prudent polygons are prudent walks that return to a point adjacent to their starting point. Prudent walks and polygons have been previously enumerated by length and perimeter (Bousquet-Mélou, Schwerdtfeger; 2010). We consider the enumeration of \emph{prudent polygons} by \emph{area}. For the 3-sided variety, we find that the generating function is expressed in terms of a $q$-hypergeometric function, with an accumulation of poles towards the dominant singularity. This expression reveals an unusual asymptotic structure of the number of polygons of area $n$, where the critical exponent is the transcendental number $\log_23$ and and the amplitude involves tiny oscillations. Based on numerical data, we also expect similar phenomena to occur for 4-sided polygons. The asymptotic methodology involves an original combination of Mellin transform techniques and singularity analysis, which is of potential interest in a number of other asymptotic enumeration problems.

The classes of the quasihomogeneous Hilbert schemes of points on the plane
Published in Mosc. Math. J. 12 (2012), no. 1, 21--36 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we give a formula for the classes (in the Grothendieck ring of complex quasi-projective varieties) of irreducible components of $(1,k)$-quasi-homogeneous Hilbert schemes of points on the plane. We find a new simple geometric interpretation of the $q,t$-Catalan numbers. Finally, we investigate a connection between $(1,k)$-quasi-homogeneous Hilbert schemes and homogeneous nested Hilbert schemes.

Affine Patches on Positroid Varieties and Affine Pipe Dreams (Thesis)
The objects of interest in this thesis are positroid varieties in the Grassmannian, which are indexed by juggling patterns. In particular, we study affine patches on these positroid varieties. Our main result corresponds these affine patches to Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties in the affine Grassmannian. We develop a new term order and study how these spaces are related to subword complexes and Stanley-Reisner ideals. We define an extension of pipe dreams to the affine case and conclude by showing how our affine pipe dreams are generalizations of Cauchon and Le diagrams.

Star chromatic index
The star chromatic index $χ_s'(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of colors needed to properly color the edges of the graph so that no path or cycle of length four is bi-colored. We obtain a near-linear upper bound in terms of the maximum degree $Δ=Δ(G)$. Our best lower bound on $χ_s'$ in terms of $Δ$ is $2Δ(1+o(1))$ valid for complete graphs. We also consider the special case of cubic graphs, for which we show that the star chromatic index lies between 4 and 7 and characterize the graphs attaining the lower bound. The proofs involve a variety of notions from other branches of mathematics and may therefore be of certain independent interest.

L-cumulants, L-cumulant embeddings and algebraic statistics
Published • View PublicationBIB
Focusing on the discrete probabilistic setting we generalize the combinatorial definition of cumulants to L-cumulants. This generalization keeps all the desired properties of the classical cumulants like semi-invariance and vanishing for independent blocks of random variables. These properties make L-cumulants useful for the algebraic analysis of statistical models. We illustrate this for general Markov models and hidden Markov processes in the case when the hidden process is binary. The main motivation of this work is to understand cumulant-like coordinates in algebraic statistics and to give a more insightful explanation why tree cumulants give such an elegant description of binary hidden tree models. Moreover, we argue that L-cumulants can be used in the analysis of certain classical algebraic varieties.

Combinatorial Characterization of Formal Languages
This paper is an extended abstract of the dissertation presented by the author for the doctoral degree in physics and mathematics (in Russia). The main characteristic studied in the dissertation is combinatorial complexity, which is a "counting" function associated with a language and returning the number of words of given length in this language. For several classes of languages, a variety of problems about combinatorial complexity and its connections to other parameters of languages are studied. A brief introduction to the topic and the formulations of results are presented. No proofs are given; instead, the papers containing the proofs are cited.
Few smooth d-polytopes with n lattice points
Published in Israel J. Math., April 2015, Volume 207, Issue 1, pp 301-329 • View PublicationBIB
We prove that, for fixed n there exist only finitely many embeddings of Q-factorial toric varieties X into P^n that are induced by a complete linear system. The proof is based on a combinatorial result that for fixed nonnegative integers d and n, there are only finitely many smooth d-polytopes with n lattice points. We also enumerate all smooth 3-polytopes with at most 12 lattice points. In fact, it is sufficient to bound the singularities and the number of lattice points on edges to prove finiteness.
Vanishing products of one-forms and critical points of master functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let \A be an affine hyperplane arrangement in $\C^\ell$ with complement $U$. Let $f_1, \..., f_n$ be linear polynomials defining the hyperplanes of \A, and $A^\cdot$ the algebra of differential forms generated by the 1-forms $d \log f_1, \..., d \log f_n$. To each $l \in \C^n$ we associate the master function $Φ=Φ_l = \prod_{i=1}^n f_i^{l_i}$ on $U$ and the closed logarithmic 1-form $ω= d \log Φ$. We assume $ω$ is an element of a rational linear subspace $D$ of $A^1$ of dimension $q>1$ such that the multiplication map $\bigwedge^k(D) \to A^k$ is zero for $p<k\leq q$. With this assumption, we prove every component of the critical locus $\crit(Φ)$ of $Φ$ has codimension at most $p$, and $\crit(Φ)$ is a union of intersections of level sets of rational master functions. We give conditions that guarantee $\crit(Φ)$ is nonempty and every component has codimension equal to $p$, in terms of syzygies among polynomial master functions. If \A is $p$-generic, then $D$ is contained in the degree $p$ resonance variety $\R^p(\A)$ -- in this sense the present work complements previous work on resonance and critical loci of master functions. Any arrangement is 1-generic; in case $p=1$ we give a precise description of $\crit(Φ_l)$ in case $l$ lies in an isotropic subspace $D$ of $A^1$, using the multinet structure on \A corresponding to $D\subseteq \R^1(\A)$. This is carried out in detail for the Hessian arrangement. Finally, for arbitrary $p$ and \A, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions for a set of integral one-forms to span such a subspace, in terms of nested sets of \A, using tropical implicitization.

Maximal lengths of exceptional collections of line bundles
Published in Journal of the London Mathematical Society 90 (2), 350-372, 2014 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we construct infinitely many examples of toric Fano varieties with Picard number three, which do not admit full exceptional collections of line bundles. In particular, this disproves King's conjecture for toric Fano varieties. More generally, we prove that for any constant $c>\frac34$ there exist infinitely many toric Fano varieties $Y$ with Picard number three, such that the maximal length of exceptional collection of line bundles on $Y$ is strictly less than $c\rk K_0(Y).$ To obtain varieties without exceptional collections of line bundles, it suffices to put $c=1.$ On the other hand, we prove that for any toric nef-Fano DM stack $Y$ with Picard number three, there exists a strong exceptional collection of line bundles on $Y$ of length at least $\frac34 \rk K_0(Y).$ The constant $\frac34$ is thus maximal with this property.

Unipotent Invariant Matrices

We describe the variety of fixed points of a unipotent operator acting on the space of matrices. We compute the determinant and the rank of a generic (symmetric, or anti-symmetric) matrix in the fixed variety, yielding information about the generic singular locus of the corresponding bilinear form.

Counting points of slope varieties over finite fields
Published • View PublicationBIB
The slope variety of a graph is an algebraic set whose points correspond to drawings of a graph. A complement-reducible graph (or cograph) is a graph without an induced four-vertex path. We construct a bijection between the zeroes of the slope variety of the complete graph on $n$ vertices over $\mathbb{F}_2$, and the complement-reducible graphs on $n$ vertices.

Inversion arrangements and Bruhat intervals
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $W$ be a finite reflection group. For a given $w \in W$, the following assertion may or may not be satisfied: (*) The principal Bruhat order ideal of $w$ contains as many elements as there are regions in the inversion hyperplane arrangement of $w$. We present a type independent combinatorial criterion which characterises the elements $w\in W$ that satisfy (*). A couple of immediate consequences are derived: (1) The criterion only involves the order ideal of $w$ as an abstract poset. In this sense, (*) is a poset-theoretic property. (2) For $W$ of type $A$, another characterisation of (*), in terms of pattern avoidance, was previously given in collaboration with Linusson, Shareshian and Sjöstrand. We obtain a short and simple proof of that result. (3) If $W$ is a Weyl group and the Schubert variety indexed by $w \in W$ is rationally smooth, then $w$ satisfies (*).

A Game for the Resolution of Singularities
Published • View PublicationBIB
We propose a combinatorial game on finite graphs, called Salmagundy, that is played by two protagonists, Dido and Mephisto. The game captures the logical structure of a proof of the resolution of singularities. In each round, the graph of the game is modified by the moves of the players. When it assumes a final configuration, Dido has won. Otherwise, the game goes on forever, and nobody wins. In particular, Mephisto cannot win himself, he can only prevent Dido from winning. We show that Dido always possesses a winning strategy, regardless of the initial shape of the graph and of the moves of Mephisto. This implies -- translating back to algebraic geometry -- that there is a choice of centers for the blowup of singular varieties in characteristic zero which eventually leads to their resolution. The algebra needed for this implication is elementary. The transcription from varieties to graphs and from blowups to modifications of the graph thus axiomatizes the proof of the resolution of singularities. In principle, the same logic could also work in positive characteristic, once an appropriate descent in dimension is settled.

Asymptotics of coefficients of multivariate generating functions: improvements for multiple points
Let $F(x)= \sum_{ν\in\NN^d} F_νx^ν$ be a multivariate power series with complex coefficients that converges in a neighborhood of the origin. Assume $F=G/H$ for some functions $G$ and $H$ holomorphic in a neighborhood of the origin. We derive asymptotics for the coefficients $F_{rα}$ as $r \to \infty$ with $rα\in \NN^d$ for $α$ in a permissible subset of $d$-tuples of positive reals. More specifically, we give an algorithm for computing arbitrary terms of the asymptotic expansion for $F_{rα}$ when the asymptotics are controlled by a transverse multiple point of the analytic variety $H = 0$. This improves upon earlier work by R. Pemantle and M. C. Wilson. We have implemented our algorithm in Sage and apply it to obtain accurate numerical results for several rational combinatorial generating functions.

Relative Node Polynomials for Plane Curves
Published • View PublicationBIB
We generalize the recent work of S. Fomin and G. Mikhalkin on polynomial formulas for Severi degrees. The degree of the Severi variety of plane curves of degree d and delta nodes is given by a polynomial in d, provided delta is fixed and d is large enough. We extend this result to generalized Severi varieties parametrizing plane curves which, in addition, satisfy tangency conditions of given orders with respect to a given line. We show that the degrees of these varieties, appropriately rescaled, are given by a combinatorially defined "relative node polynomial" in the tangency orders, provided the latter are large enough. We describe a method to compute these polynomials for arbitrary delta, and use it to present explicit formulas for delta <= 6. We also give a threshold for polynomiality, and compute the first few leading terms for any delta.

Simple Modules of Classical Linear Groups with Normal Closures of Maximal Torus Orbits
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let T be a maximal torus in a classical linear group G. In this paper we find all simple rational G-modules V such that for each vector v in V the closure of its T-orbit is a normal affine variety. For every other G-module we present a T-orbit with the non-normal closure. We use a combinatorial criterion of normality formulated in terms of the set of weights of a simple G-module. This work is a continuation of the previous work, where the same problem was solved in the case G=SL(n).

Non-coherent Components of the Toric Hilbert Scheme
We want to understand the geometry of all irreducible components of the toric Hilbert scheme. Until now it is known that the coherent component is (up to normalisation) the toric variety associated to the state polytope of the toric ideal. For the non-coherent components it was only known that there exists such a polytope describing the normalisation. Using the local equations and various facts about toric Hilbert schemes, we will derive an explicit construction of the polytope corresponding to the normalisation of the underlying reduced structure of a given non-coherent component of the toric Hilbert scheme.
