The coefficients of the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials $P_{v,w}(q)$ are nonnegative integers that are upper semicontinuous on Bruhat order. Conjecturally, the same properties hold for $h$-polynomials $H_{v,w}(q)$ of local rings of Schubert varieties. This suggests a parallel between the two families of polynomials. We prove our conjectures for Grassmannians, and more generally, covexillary Schubert varieties in complete flag varieties, by deriving a combinatorial formula for $H_{v,w}(q)$. We introduce \emph{drift configurations} to formulate a new and compatible combinatorial rule for $P_{v,w}(q)$. From our rules we deduce, for these cases, the coefficient-wise inequality $P_{v,w}(q)\preceq H_{v,w}(q)$.
Control of cancellations that restrain the growth of a binomial recursion

We study a recursion that generates real sequences depending on a parameter $x$. Given a negative $x$ the growth of the sequence is very difficult to estimate due to canceling terms. We reduce the study of the recursion to a problem about a family of integral operators, and prove that for every parameter value except -1, the growth of the sequence is factorial. In the combinatorial part of the proof we show that when $x=-1$ the resulting recurrence yields the sequence of alternating Catalan numbers, and thus has exponential growth. We expect our methods to be useful in a variety of similar situations.
Some lower bounds in the B. and M. Shapiro conjecture for flag varieties

The B. and M. Shapiro conjecture stated that all solutions of the Schubert Calculus problems associated with real points on the rational normal curve should be real. For Grassmannians, it was proved by Mukhin, Tarasov and Varchenko. For flag varieties, Sottile found a counterexample and suggested that all solutions should be real under certain monotonicity conditions. In this paper, we compute lower bounds on the number of real solutions for some special cases of the B. and M. Shapiro conjecture for flag varieties, when Sottile's monotonicity conditions are not satisfied.
Computing Node Polynomials for Plane Curves

According to the Göttsche conjecture (now a theorem), the degree N^{d, delta} of the Severi variety of plane curves of degree d with delta nodes is given by a polynomial in d, provided d is large enough. These "node polynomials" N_delta(d) were determined by Vainsencher and Kleiman-Piene for delta <= 6 and delta <= 8, respectively. Building on ideas of Fomin and Mikhalkin, we develop an explicit algorithm for computing all node polynomials, and use it to compute N_delta(d) for delta <= 14. Furthermore, we improve the threshold of polynomiality and verify Göttsche's conjecture on the optimal threshold up to delta <= 14. We also determine the first 9 coefficients of N_delta(d), for general delta, settling and extending a 1994 conjecture of Di Francesco and Itzykson.

In this paper we first generalize to the case of partial flags a result proved both by Spaltenstein and by Steinberg that relates the relative position of two complete flags and the irreducible components of the flag variety in which they lie, using the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence. Then we use this result to generalize the mirabolic Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence defined by Travkin, to the case of two partial flags and a line.

In this note we give a transparent proof of a result of da Cruz and Dias da Silva on the equality of symmetrized decomposable tensors. This will be done by explaining that their result follows from the fact that the coordinate ring of a flag variety is a unique factorization domain.
Tropical secant graphs of monomial curves

The first secant variety of a projective monomial curve is a threefold with an action by a one-dimensional torus. Its tropicalization is a three-dimensional fan with a one-dimensional lineality space, so the tropical threefold is represented by a balanced graph. Our main result is an explicit construction of that graph. As a consequence, we obtain algorithms to effectively compute the multidegree and Chow polytope of an arbitrary projective monomial curve. This generalizes an earlier degree formula due to Ranestad. The combinatorics underlying our construction is rather delicate, and it is based on a refinement of the theory of geometric tropicalization due to Hacking, Keel and Tevelev.
On integer radii coin representations of the wheel graph
A {\em flower} is a coin graph representation of the wheel graph. A {\em petal} of the wheel graph is an edge to the center vertex. In this paper we investigate flowers whose coins have integer radii. For an $n$-petaled flower we show there is a unique irreducible polynomial $P_n$ in $n$ variables over the integers $\ints$, the affine variety of which contains the cosines of the internal angles formed by the petals of the flower. We also establish a recursion that these irreducible polynomials satisfy. Using the polynomials $P_n$, we develop a parameterization for all the integer radii of the coins of the 3-petal flower.
Pieri rules for the K-theory of cominuscule Grassmannians

We prove Pieri formulas for the multiplication with special Schubert classes in the K-theory of all cominuscule Grassmannians. For Grassmannians of type A this gives a new proof of a formula of Lenart. Our formula is new for Lagrangian Grassmannians, and for orthogonal Grassmannians it proves a special case of a conjectural Littlewood-Richardson rule of Thomas and Yong. Recent work of Thomas and Yong and of E. Clifford has shown that the full Littlewood-Richardson rule for orthogonal Grassmannians follows from the Pieri case proved here. We describe the K-theoretic Pieri coefficients both as integers determined by positive recursive identities and as the number of certain tableaux. The proof is based on a computation of the sheaf Euler characteristic of triple intersections of Schubert varieties, where at least one Schubert variety is special.

The symplectic group branching algebra, B, is a graded algebra whose components encode the multiplicities of irreducible representations of Sp(2n-2,C) in each irreducible representation of Sp(2n,C). By describing on B an ASL structure, we construct an explicit standard monomial basis of B consisting of Sp(2n-2,C) highest weight vectors. Moreover, B is known to carry a canonical action of the n-fold product SL(2) \times ... \times SL(2), and we show that the standard monomial basis is the unique (up to scalar) weight basis associated to this representation. Finally, using the theory of Hibi algebras we describe a deformation of Spec(B) into an explicit toric variety.
A Generalized Diagonal Wythoff Nim

In this paper we study a family of 2-pile Take Away games, that we denote by Generalized Diagonal Wythoff Nim (GDWN). The story begins with 2-pile Nim whose sets of options and $P$-positions are $\{\{0,t\}\mid t\in \N\}$ and $\{(t,t)\mid t\in \M \}$ respectively. If we to 2-pile Nim adjoin the main-\emph{diagonal} $\{(t,t)\mid t\in \N\}$ as options, the new game is Wythoff Nim. It is well-known that the $P$-positions of this game lie on two 'beams' originating at the origin with slopes $Φ= \frac{1+\sqrt{5}}{2}>1$ and $\frac{1}Φ < 1$. Hence one may think of this as if, in the process of going from Nim to Wythoff Nim, the set of $P$-positions has \emph{split} and landed some distance off the main diagonal. This geometrical observation has motivated us to ask the following intuitive question. Does this splitting of the set of $P$-positions continue in some meaningful way if we, to the game of Wythoff Nim, adjoin some new \emph{generalized diagonal} move, that is a move of the form $\{pt, qt\}$, where $0 < p < q$ are fixed positive integers and $t > 0$? Does the answer perhaps depend on the specific values of $p$ and $q$? We state three conjectures of which the weakest form is: $\lim_{t\in \N}\frac{b_t}{a_t}$ exists, and equals $Φ$, if and only if $(p, q)$ is a certain \emph{non-splitting pair}, and where $\{\{a_t, b_t\}\}$ represents the set of $P$-positions of the new game. Then we prove this conjecture for the special case $(p,q) = (1,2)$ (a \emph{splitting pair}). We prove the other direction whenever $q / p < Φ$. In the Appendix, a variety of experimental data is included, aiming to point out some directions for future work on GDWN games.

The spinor variety is cut out by the quadratic Wick relations among the principal Pfaffians of an n x n skew-symmetric matrix. Its points correspond to n-dimensional isotropic subspaces of a 2n-dimensional vector space. In this paper we tropicalize this picture, and we develop a combinatorial theory of tropical Wick vectors and tropical linear spaces that are tropically isotropic. We characterize tropical Wick vectors in terms of subdivisions of Delta-matroid polytopes, and we examine to what extent the Wick relations form a tropical basis. Our theory generalizes several results for tropical linear spaces and valuated matroids to the class of Coxeter matroids of type D.
On the singularity of some special components of Springer fibers

Let $u\in\mathrm{End}(\mathbb{C}^n)$ be nilpotent. The variety of $u$-stable complete flags is called the Springer fiber over $u$. Its irreducible components are parameterized by a set of standard Young tableaux. The Richardson (resp. Bala-Carter) components of Springer fibers correspond to the Richardson (resp. Bala-Carter) elements of the symmetric group, through Robinson-Schensted correspondence. Every Richardson component is isomorphic to a product of standard flag varieties. On the contrary, the Bala-Carter components are very susceptible to be singular. First, we characterize the singular Bala-Carter components in terms of two minimal forbidden configurations. Next, we introduce two new families of components, wider than the families of Bala-Carter components and Richardson components, and both in duality via the tableau transposition. The components in the first family are characterized by the fact that they have a dense orbit of special type under the action of the stabilizer of $u$, whereas all components in the second family are iterated fiber bundles over projective spaces.
New Techniques for obtaining Schubert-type formulas for Hamiltonian manifolds

In [GT], Goldin and the second author extend some ideas from Schubert calculus to the more general setting of Hamiltonian torus actions on compact symplectic manifolds with isolated fixed points. (See also [Kn99] and [Kn08].) The main goal of this paper is to build on this work by finding more effective formulas. More explicitly, given a generic component of the moment map, they define a canonical class $α_p$ in the equivariant cohomology of the manifold $M$ for each fixed point $p \in M$. When they exist, canonical classes form a natural basis of the equivariant cohomology of $M$. In particular, when $M$ is a flag variety, these classes are the equivariant Schubert classes. It is a long standing problem in combinatorics to find positive integral formulas for the equivariant structure constants associated to this basis. Since computing the restriction of the canonical classes to the fixed points determines these structure constants, it is important to find effective formulas for these restrictions. In this paper, we introduce new techniques for calculating the restrictions of a canonical class $α_p$ to a fixed point $q$. Our formulas are nearly always simpler, in the sense that they count the contributions over fewer paths. Moreover, our formula is manifestly positive and integral in certain important special cases.
Lattices freely generated by posets within a variety. Part I: Four easy varieties

Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence in the geometry of partial flag varieties

We study algebras encoding stable range branching rules for the pairs of complex classical groups of the same type in the context of toric degenerations of spherical varieties. By lifting affine semigroup algebras constructed from combinatorial data of branching multiplicities, we obtain algebras having highest weight vectors in multiplicity spaces as their standard monomial type bases. In particular, we identify a family of distributive lattices and their associated Hibi algebras which can uniformly describe the stable range branching algebras for all the pairs we consider.

Each irreducible component of the first resonance variety of a hyperplane arrangement naturally determines a codimension one foliation on the ambient space. The superposition of these foliations define what we call the resonance web of the arrangement. In this paper we initiate the study of these objects with emphasis on their spaces of abelian relations.

Affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties can be thought of as affine analogs of classical Deligne-Lusztig varieties, or Frobenius-twisted analogs of Schubert varieties. We provide a method for proving a non-emptiness statement for affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties inside the affine flag variety associated to affine Weyl group elements satisfying a certain length additivity hypothesis. In particular, we prove that non-emptiness holds whenever it is conjectured to do so for alcoves in the shrunken dominant Weyl chamber, providing a partial converse to the emptiness results of Goertz, Haines, Kottwitz, and Reuman. Our technique involves the work of Geck and Pfeiffer on cuspidal conjugacy classes, in addition to an analysis of the combinatorics of certain fully commutative elements in the finite Weyl group.
