The Oda's Strong Factorization Conjecture states that a proper birational map between smooth toric varieties can be decomposed as a sequence of smooth toric blowups followed by a sequence of smooth toric blowdowns. This article describes an algorithm that conjecturally constructs such a decomposition. Several reductions and simplifications of the algorithm are presented and some special cases of the conjecture are proved.

We extend our previous work arXiv:1007.0053 on coherent-constructible correspondence for toric varieties to include toric Deligne-Mumford (DM) stacks. Following Borisov-Chen-Smith, a toric DM stack $\cX_\bSi$ is described by a "stacky fan" $\bSi=(N,\Si,β)$, where $N$ is a finitely generated abelian group and $\Si$ is a simplicial fan in $N_\bR=N\otimes_{\bZ}\bR$. From $\bSi$ we define a conical Lagrangian $Λ_\bSi$ inside the cotangent $T^*M_\bR$ of the dual vector space $M_\bR$ of $N_\bR$, such that torus-equivariant, coherent sheaves on $\cX_\bSi$ are equivalent to constructible sheaves on $M_\bR$ with singular support in $\LbS$.

Okounkov bodies on projectivizations of rank two toric vector bundles
The global Okounkov body of a projective variety is a closed convex cone that encodes asymptotic information about every big line bundle on the variety. In the case of a rank two toric vector bundle E on a smooth projective toric variety, we use its Klyachko filtrations to give an explicit description of the global Okounkov body of P(E). In particular, we show that this is a rational polyhedral cone and that P(E) is a Mori dream space.

It is a long-standing question whether an arbitrary variety is desingularized by finitely many normalized Nash blow-ups. We consider this question in the case of a toric variety. We interpret the normalized Nash blow-up in polyhedral terms, show how continued fractions can be used to give an affirmative answer for a toric surface, and report on a computer investigation in which over a thousand 3- and 4-dimensional toric varieties were successfully resolved.
Arrangements of rational sections over curves and the varieties they define
We introduce arrangements of rational sections over curves. They generalize line arrangements on P^2. Each arrangement of d sections defines a single curve in P^{d-2} through the Kapranov's construction of \bar{M}_{0,d+1}. We show a one-to-one correspondence between arrangements of d sections and irreducible curves in M_{0,d+1}, giving also correspondences for two distinguished subclasses: transversal and simple crossing. Then, we associate to each arrangement A (and so to each irreducible curve in M_{0,d+1}) several families of nonsingular projective surfaces X of general type with Chern numbers asymptotically proportional to various log Chern numbers defined by A. For example, for extended families over the complex numbers, one has that any such X is of positive index and π_1(X) = π_1(\bar{A}), where \bar{A} is the normalization of A. In this way, any rational curve in M_{0,d+1} produces simply connected surfaces with 2< c_1^2(X)/c_2(X) <3. Inequalities like these come from log Chern inequalities, which are in general connected to geometric height inequalities (see Appendix). Along the way, we show examples of étale simply connected surfaces of general type in any characteristic violating any sort of Miyaoka-Yau inequality.

We provide a technique to compute the Euler characteristic of a class of projective varieties called quiver Grassmannians. This technique applies to quiver Grassmannians associated with "orientable string modules". As an application we explicitly compute the Euler characteristic of quiver Grassmannians associated with indecomposable preprojective, preinjective and regular homogeneous representations of an affine quiver of type $\tilde{A}_{p,1}$. For $p=1$, this approach provides another proof of a result due to P. Caldero and A. Zelevinsky in \cite{CZ}.

We classify the invariant prime ideals of a quantum partial flag variety under the action of the related maximal torus. As a result we construct a bijection between them and the torus orbits of symplectic leaves of the standard Poisson structure on the corresponding flag variety. It was previously shown by K. Goodearl and the author that the latter are precisely the Lusztig strata of the partial flag variety.

We introduce a moduli functor for varieties whose tropicalization realizes a given weighted fan and show that this functor is an algebraic space in general, and is represented by a scheme of finite type when the associated toric variety is quasiprojective. We study the geometry of these tropical realization spaces for the matroid fans studied by Ardila and Klivans, and show that the tropical realization space of a matroid fan is a torus torsor over the realization space of the matroid. As a consequence, we deduce that these tropical realization spaces satisfy Murphy's Law.

Let $u$ be a nilpotent endomorphism of a finite dimensional $\mathbb{C}$-vector space. The set ${\mathcal F}_u$ of $u$-stable complete flags is a projective algebraic variety called a Springer fiber. Its irreducible components are parameterized by a set of standard tableaux. We provide three characterizations of the singular components of ${\mathcal F}_u$ in the case $u^2=0$. First, we give the combinatorial description of standard tableaux corresponding to singular components. Second, we prove that a component is singular if and only if its Poincaré polynomial is not palindromic. Third, we show that a component is singular when it has too many intersections of codimension one with other components. Finally, relying on the second criterion, we infer that, for $u$ general, whenever ${\mathcal F}_u$ has a singular component, it admits a component whose Poincaré polynomial is not palindromic. This work relies on a previous criterion of singularity for components of ${\mathcal F}_u$ in the case $u^2=0$ by the first author and on the description of the $B$-orbit decomposition of orbital varieties of nilpotent order two by the second author.

We study an integrable vertex model with a periodic boundary condition associated with U_q(A_n^{(1)}) at the crystallizing point q=0. It is an (n+1)-state cellular automaton describing the factorized scattering of solitons. The dynamics originates in the commuting family of fusion transfer matrices and generalizes the ultradiscrete Toda/KP flow corresponding to the periodic box-ball system. Combining Bethe ansatz and crystal theory in quantum group, we develop an inverse scattering/spectral formalism and solve the initial value problem based on several conjectures. The action-angle variables are constructed representing the amplitudes and phases of solitons. By the direct and inverse scattering maps, separation of variables into solitons is achieved and nonlinear dynamics is transformed into a straight motion on a tropical analogue of the Jacobi variety. We decompose the level set into connected components under the commuting family of time evolutions and identify each of them with the set of integer points on a torus. The weight multiplicity formula derived from the q=0 Bethe equation acquires an elegant interpretation as the volume of the phase space expressed by the size and multiplicity of these tori. The dynamical period is determined as an explicit arithmetical function of the n-tuple of Young diagrams specifying the level set. The inverse map, i.e., tropical Jacobi inversion is expressed in terms of a tropical Riemann theta function associated with the Bethe ansatz data. As an application, time average of some local variable is calculated.

In this paper, we study tropicalisations of families of curves with a singularity in a fixed point. The tropicalisation of such a family is a linear tropical variety. We describe its maximal dimensional cones using results about linear tropical varieties from Ardila and Klivans and from Feichtner and Sturmfels. We show that a singularity tropicalises either to a vertex of higher valence or of higher multiplicity, or to an edge of higher weight. We then classify maximal dimensional types of singular tropical curves. For those, the singularity is either a crossing of two edges, or a 3-valent vertex of multiplicity 3, or a point on an edge of weight 2 whose distances to the neighbouring vertices satisfy a certain metric condition. We also study algebraic preimages of our singular tropical curves.

A Richardson variety $X_\ga^\gc$ in the Orthogonal Grassmannian is defined to be the intersection of a Schubert variety $X^\gc$ in the Orthogonal Grassmannian and a opposite Schubert variety $X_\ga$ therein. We give an explicit description of the initial ideal (with respect to certain conveniently chosen term order) for the ideal of the tangent cone at any $T$-fixed point of $X_\ga^\gc$, thus generalizing a result of Raghavan-Upadhyay \cite{Ra-Up2}. Our proof is based on a generalization of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth (RSK) correspondence, which we call the Orthogonal bounded RSK (OBRSK). The OBRSK correspondence will give a degree-preserving bijection between a set of monomials defined by the initial ideal of the ideal of the tangent cone (as mentioned above) and a `standard monomial basis'. A similar work for Richardson varieties in the ordinary Grassmannian was done by Kreiman in \cite{Kr-bkrs}.

The 4-dimensional abstract Kummer variety K^4 with 16 nodes leads to the K3 surface by resolving the 16 singularities. Here we present a simplicial realization of this minimal resolution. Starting with a minimal 16-vertex triangulation of K^4 we resolve its 16 isolated singularities - step by step - by simplicial blowups. As a result we obtain a 17-vertex triangulation of the standard PL K3 surface. A key step is the construction of a triangulated version of the mapping cylinder of the Hopf map from the real projective 3-space onto the 2-sphere with the minimum number of vertices. Moreover we study simplicial Morse functions and the changes of their levels between the critical points. In this way we obtain slicings through the K3 surface of various topological types.

Kazhdan-Lusztig ideals, a family of generalized determinantal ideals investigated in [Woo-Yong '08], provide an explicit choice of coordinates and equations encoding a neighbourhood of a torus-fixed point of a Schubert variety on a type A flag variety. Our main result is a Grobner basis for these ideals. This provides a single geometric setting to transparently explain the naturality of pipe dreams on the Rothe diagram of a permutation, and their appearance in:
* combinatorial formulas [Fomin-Kirillov '94] for Schubert and Grothendieck polynomials of [Lascoux-Schutzenberger '82];
* the equivariant K-theory specialization formula of [Buch-Rimanyi '04]; and
* a positive combinatorial formula for multiplicities of Schubert varieties in good cases, including those for which the associated Kazhdan-Lusztig ideal is homogeneous under the standard grading.
Our results generalize (with alternate proofs) [Knutson-Miller '05]'s Grobner basis theorem for Schubert determinantal ideals and their geometric interpretation of the monomial positivity of Schubert polynomials. We also complement recent work of [Knutson '08,'09] on degenerations of Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties in general Lie type, as well as work of [Goldin '01] on equivariant localization and of [Lakshmibai-Weyman '90], [Rosenthal-Zelevinsky '01], and [Krattenthaler '01] on Grassmannian multiplicity formulas.
A positive Monk formula in the S^1-equivariant cohomology of type A Peterson varieties

Peterson varieties are a special class of Hessenberg varieties that have been extensively studied e.g. by Peterson, Kostant, and Rietsch, in connection with the quantum cohomology of the flag variety. In this manuscript, we develop a generalized Schubert calculus, and in particular a positive Chevalley-Monk formula, for the ordinary and Borel-equivariant cohomology of the Peterson variety $Y$ in type $A_{n-1}$, with respect to a natural $S^1$-action arising from the standard action of the maximal torus on flag varieties. As far as we know, this is the first example of positive Schubert calculus beyond the realm of Kac-Moody flag varieties $G/P$.
Our main results are as follows. First, we identify a computationally convenient basis of $H^*_{S^1}(Y)$, which we call the basis of Peterson Schubert classes. Second, we derive a manifestly positive, integral Chevalley-Monk formula for the product of a cohomology-degree-2 Peterson Schubert class with an arbitrary Peterson Schubert class. Both $H^*_{S^1}(Y)$ and $H^*(Y)$ are generated in degree 2. Finally, by using our Chevalley-Monk formula we give explicit descriptions (via generators and relations) of both the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology ring $H^*_{S^1}(Y)$ and the ordinary cohomology ring $H^*(Y)$ of the type $A_{n-1}$ Peterson variety. Our methods are both directly from and inspired by those of GKM (Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson) theory and classical Schubert calculus. We discuss several open questions and directions for future work.

Let $G$ be a classical complex Lie group, $P$ any parabolic subgroup of $G$, and $G/P$ the corresponding partial flag variety. We prove an explicit combinatorial Giambelli formula which expresses an arbitrary Schubert class in the cohomology ring of $G/P$ as a polynomial in certain special Schubert class generators. Our formula extends to one that applies to the torus-equivariant cohomology ring of $G/P$ and to the setting of symplectic and orthogonal degeneracy loci.

An edge tessellation is a tiling of the plane generated by reflecting a polygon in its edges. We prove that a polygon generating an edge tessellation is one the following eight types: a rectangle; an equilateral, 60-right, isosceles right, or 120-isosceles triangle; a 120-rhombus; a 60-90-120 kite; or a regular hexagon. A stamp folding puzzle is a paper folding problem constrained to the perforations on a sheet of postage stamps. We establish the following conjecture due to G. Frederickson: "Although triangular stamps have come in a variety of different triangular shapes, only three shapes seem suitable for [stamp] folding puzzles: equilateral, isosceles right triangles, and 60-right triangles."

For a finite abelian group $G$ and a splitting field $K$ of $G$, let $d(G, K)$ denote the largest integer $l \in \N$ for which there is a sequence $S = g_1 \cdot ... \cdot g_l$ over $G$ such that $(X^{g_1} - a_1) \cdot ... \cdot (X^{g_l} - a_l) \ne 0 \in K[G]$ for all $a_1, ..., a_l \in K^{\times}$. If $D(G)$ denotes the Davenport constant of $G$, then there is the straightforward inequality $D(G)-1 \le d (G, K)$. Equality holds for a variety of groups, and a standing conjecture of W. Gao et.al. states that equality holds for all groups. We offer further groups for which equality holds, but we also give the first examples of groups $G$ for which $D(G) -1 < d(G, K)$ holds. Thus we disprove the conjecture.
