Generalizing the notion of Newton polytope, we define the Newton-Okounkov body, respectively, for semigroups of integral points, graded algebras, and linear series on varieties. We prove that any semigroup in the lattice Z^n is asymptotically approximated by the semigroup of all the points in a sublattice and lying in a convex cone. Applying this we obtain several results: we show that for a large class of graded algebras, the Hilbert functions have polynomial growth and their growth coefficients satisfy a Brunn-Minkowski type inequality. We prove analogues of Fujita approximation theorem for semigroups of integral points and graded algebras, which imply a generalization of this theorem for arbitrary linear series. Applications to intersection theory include a far-reaching generalization of the Kushnirenko theorem (from Newton polytope theory) and a new version of the Hodge inequality. We also give elementary proofs of the Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality in convex geometry and its analogue in algebraic geometry.
Tropical intersection products on smooth varieties

In analogy to chapter 9 of arXiv:0709.3705 we define an intersection product of tropical cycles on tropical linear spaces L^n_k, i.e. on tropical fans of the type max{0,x_1,...,x_n}^(n-k)*R^n. Afterwards we use this result to obtain an intersection product of cycles on every smooth tropical variety, i.e. on every tropical variety that arises from gluing such tropical linear spaces. In contrast to classical algebraic geometry these products always yield well-defined cycles, not cycle classes only. Using these intersection products we are able to define the pull-back of a tropical cycle along a morphism between smooth tropical varieties. In the present article we stick to the definitions, notions and concepts introduced in arXiv:0709.3705.

Let A be an asymptotic basis for N and X a finite subset of A such that A\X is still an asymptotic basis. Farhi recently proved a new batch of upper bounds for the order of A\X in terms of the order of A and a variety of parameters related to the set X. He posed two questions concerning possible improvements to his bounds. In this note, we answer both questions.

A $n$-dimensional Gorenstein toric Fano variety $X$ is called Del Pezzo variety if the anticanonical class $-K_X$ is a $(n-1)$-multiple of a Cartier divisor. Our purpose is to give a complete biregular classfication of Gorenstein toric Del Pezzo varieties in arbitrary dimension $n \geq 2$. We show that up to isomorphism there exist exactly 37 Gorenstein toric Del Pezzo varieties of dimension $n$ which are not cones over $(n-1)$-dimensional Gorenstein toric Del Pezzo varieties. Our results are closely related to the classification of all Minkowski sum decompositions of reflexive polygons due to Emiris and Tsigaridas and to the classification up to deformation of $n$-dimensional almost Del Pezzo manifolds obtained by Jahnke and Peternell.

We describe a class of isolated nondegenerate hypersurface singularities that give a polynomial contribution to Batyrev's stringy E-function. These singularities are obtained by imposing a natural condition on the facets of the Newton polyhedron, and they are strictly canonical. We prove that Batyrev's conjecture concerning the nonnegativity of stringy Hodge numbers is true for complete varieties with such singularities, under some additional hypotheses on the defining polynomials (e.g. convenient or weighted homogeneous). The proof uses combinatorics on lattice polytopes. The results form a strong generalisation of previously obtained results for Brieskorn singularities.

We give a construction of MV-polytopes of a complex semisimple algebraic group G in terms of the geometry of the Bott-Samelson variety and the affine building. This is done by using the construction of dense subsets of MV-cycles by Gaussent and Littelmann. They used LS-gallery to define subsets in the Bott-Samelson variety that map to subsets of the affine Grassmannian, whose closure are MV-cycles. Since points in the Bott-Samelson variety correspond to galleries in the affine building one can look at the image of a point in such a special subset under all retractions at infinity. We prove that these images can be used to construct the corresponding MV-polytope in an explicit way, by using the GGMS strata. Furthermore we give a combinatorial construction for these images by using the crystal structure of LS-galleries and the action of the ordinary Weyl group on the coweight lattice.
Positroid varieties I: juggling and geometry
While the intersection of the Grassmannian Bruhat decompositions for all coordinate flags is an intractable mess, the intersection of only the {\em cyclic shifts} of one Bruhat decomposition turns out to have many of the good properties of the Bruhat and Richardson decompositions. This decomposition coincides with the projection of the Richardson stratification of the flag manifold, studied by Lusztig, Rietsch, and Brown-Goodearl-Yakimov. However, its cyclic-invariance is hidden in this description. Postnikov gave many cyclic-invariant ways to index the strata, and we give a new one, by a subset of the affine Weyl group we call {\em bounded juggling patterns}. We adopt his terminology and call the strata {\em positroid varieties.} We show that positroid varieties are normal and Cohen-Macaulay, and are defined as schemes by the vanishing of Plucker coordinates. We compute their T-equivariant Hilbert series, and show that their associated cohomology classes are represented by affine Stanley functions. This latter fact lets us connect Postnikov's and Buch-Kresch-Tamvakis' approaches to quantum Schubert calculus. Our principal tools are the Frobenius splitting results for Richardson varieties as developed by Brion, Lakshmibai, and Littelmann, and the Hodge-Grobner degeneration of the Grassmannian. We show that each positroid variety degenerates to the projective Stanley-Reisner scheme of a shellable ball.

In this paper, we obtain a characterization of short normal sequences over a finite Abelian p-group, thus answering positively a conjecture of Gao for a variety of such groups. Our main result is deduced from a theorem of Alon, Friedland and Kalai, originally proved so as to study the existence of regular subgraphs in almost regular graphs. In the special case of elementary p-groups, Gao's conjecture is solved using Alon's Combinatorial Nullstellensatz. To conclude, we show that, assuming every integer satisfies Property B, this conjecture holds in the case of finite Abelian groups of rank two.
Spectra of large random trees

We analyze the eigenvalues of the adjacency matrices of a wide variety of random trees. Using general, broadly applicable arguments based on the interlacing inequalities for the eigenvalues of a principal submatrix of a Hermitian matrix and a suitable notion of local weak convergence for an ensemble of random trees, we show that the empirical spectral distributions for each of a number of random tree models converge to a deterministic (model dependent) limit as the number of vertices goes to infinity.
We conclude for ensembles such as the linear preferential attachment models, random recursive trees, and the uniform random trees that the limiting spectral distribution has a set of atoms that is dense in the real line. We obtain precise asymptotics on the mass assigned to zero by the empirical spectral measures via the connection with the cardinality of a maximal matching. Moreover, we show that the total weight of a weighted matching is asymptotically equivalent to a constant multiple of the number of vertices when the edge weights are independent, identically distributed, non-negative random variables with finite expected value.
We greatly extend a celebrated result obtained by Schwenk for the uniform random trees by showing that, under mild conditions, with probability converging to one, the spectrum of a realization is shared by at least one other tree.
For the the linear preferential attachment model with parameter $a > -1$, we show that the suitably rescaled $k$ largest eigenvalues converge jointly.

We introduce a canonical strip hypothesis for Fano varieties. We show that the canonical strip hypothesis for a Fano variety implies that the zeros of the Hilbert polynomial of embedded Calabi--Yau and general type hypersurfaces are located on a vertical line. This extends, in particular, Villegas's `polynomial RH' for intersections in projective spaces to the case of CY and general type hyperplane sections in Grassmannians. We state a few conjectures on the Ehrhart polynomials of certain fan polytopes.

Using the polynomial method of Dvir \cite{dvir}, we establish optimal estimates for Kakeya sets and Kakeya maximal functions associated to algebraic varieties $W$ over finite fields $F$. For instance, given an $n-1$-dimensional projective variety $W \subset ¶^n(F)$, we establish the Kakeya maximal estimate $$ \| \sup_{γ\ni w} \sum_{v \in γ(F)} |f(v)| \|_{\ell^n(W)} \leq C_{n,W,d} |F|^{(n-1)/n} \|f\|_{\ell^n(F^n)}$$ for all functions $f: F^n \to \R$ and $d \geq 1$, where for each $w \in W$, the supremum is over all irreducible algebraic curves in $F^n$ of degree at most $d$ that pass through $w$ but do not lie in $W$, and with $C_{n,W,d}$ depending only on $n, d$ and the degree of $W$; the special case when $W$ is the hyperplane at infinity in particular establishes the Kakeya maximal function conjecture in finite fields, which in turn strengthens the results of Dvir.

We give bounds on Kazhdan constants of abelian extensions of (finite) groups. As a corollary, we improved known results of Kazhdan constants for some meta-abelian groups and for the relatively free group in the variety of $p$-groups of lower $p$-series of class 2. Furthermore, we calculate Kazhdan constants of the tame automorphism groups of the free nilpotent groups.
Codimension growth of a variety of Novikov algebras
An algebra with identities $a\circ(b\circ c-c\circ b)=(a\circ b)\circ c-(a\circ c)\circ b$ and $a\circ(b\circ c)=b\circ(a\circ c)$ is called Novikov. We construct free Novikov base in terms of Young diagrams. We show that codimensions exponent for a variety of Novikov algebras exists and is equal 4.
Cyclicity of Lusztig's stratification of Grassmannians and Poisson geometry
We prove that the standard Poisson structure on the Grassmannian Gr(k, n) is invariant under the action of the Coxeter element c =(1 2 ... n). In particular, its symplectic foliation is invariant under c. As a corollary, we obtain a second, Poisson geometric proof of the result of Knutson, Lam, and Speyer that the Coxeter element c interchanges the Lusztig strata of Gr(k, n). We also relate the main result to known anti-invariance properties of the standard Poisson structures on cominuscule flag varieties.
Representations of Symmetric Implication Algebras as Multicubes
We show that the variety of symmetric implication algebras is generated from cubic implication algebras and Boolean algebras. We do this by developing the notion of a locally symmetric implication algebra that has properties similar to cubic implication algebras and provide a representation of these algebras as subalgebras of a product of a cubic implication algebra and an implication algebra. We then show that every symmetric implication algebra is covered by a locally symmetric implication algebra.

We present a partial generalization to Schubert calculus on flag varieties of the classical Littlewood-Richardson rule, in its version based on Schuetzenberger's jeu de taquin. More precisely, we describe certain structure constants expressing the product of a Schubert and a Schur polynomial. We use a generalization of Fomin's growth diagrams (for chains in Young's lattice of partitions) to chains of permutations in the so-called k-Bruhat order. Our work is based on the recent thesis of Beligan, in which he generalizes the classical plactic structure on words to chains in certain intervals in k-Bruhat order. Potential applications of our work include the generalization of the S_3-symmetric Littlewood-Richardson rule due to Thomas and Yong, which is based on Fomin's growth diagrams.
Equivariant classes of matrix matroid varieties
Consider an integer associated with every subset of the set of columns of an $n\times k$ matrix. The collection of those matrices for which the rank of a union of columns is the predescribed integer for every subset, will be denoted by $X_C$. We study the equivariant cohomology class represented by the Zariski closure $Y_C$ of this set. We show that the coefficients of this class are solutions to problems in enumerative geometry, which are natural generalization of the linear Gromov-Witten invariants of projective spaces. We also show how to calculate these classes and present their basic properties.
On Sequential Coloring of Graphs and its Defining Sets
In this paper, based on the contributions of Tucker (1983) and Seb{ő} (1992), we generalize the concept of a sequential coloring of a graph to a framework in which the algorithm may use a coloring rule-base obtained from suitable forcing structures. In this regard, we introduce the {\it weak} and {\it strong sequential defining numbers} for such colorings and as the main results, after proving some basic properties, we show that these two parameters are intrinsically different and their spectra are nontrivial. Also, we consider the natural problems related to the complexity of computing such parameters and we show that in a variety of cases these problems are ${\bf NP}$-complete. We conjecture that this result does not depend on the rule-base for all nontrivial cases.
Floor decompositions of tropical curves : the planar case
In a previous paper, we announced a formula to compute Gromov-Witten and Welschinger invariants of some toric varieties, in terms of combinatorial objects called floor diagrams. We give here detailed proofs in the tropical geometry framework, in the case when the ambient variety is a complex surface, and give some examples of computations using floor diagrams. The focusing on dimension 2 is motivated by the special combinatoric of floor diagrams compared to arbitrary dimension.
We treat a general toric surface case in this dimension: the curve is given by an arbitrary lattice polygon and include computation of Welschinger invariants with pairs of conjugate points. See also \cite{FM} for combinatorial treatment of floor diagrams in the projective case.
Extreme lattices and vexillar designs

We define a notion of vexillar design for the flag variety in the spirit of the spherical designs introduced by Delsarte, Goethals and Seidel. For a finite subgroup of the orthogonal group, we explain how conditions on the group have the orbits of any flag under the group action be a design and point out why the minima of a lattice in the sense of the general Hermite constant forming a 4-design implies being extreme. The reasoning proves useful to show the extremality of many new expected examples ($E_8$, $\La_{24}$, Barnes-Wall lattices, Thompson-Smith lattice for instance) that were out of reach until now.
