Schubert calculus from polyhedral parametrizations of Demazure crystals
Published • View PublicationBIB
One approach to Schubert calculus is to realize Schubert classes as concrete combinatorial objects such as Schubert polynomials. Through an identification of the cohomology ring of the type A full flag variety with the polytope ring of the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes, Kiritchenko-Smirnov-Timorin realized each Schubert class as a sum of reduced (dual) Kogan faces. In this paper, we explicitly describe string parametrizations of opposite Demazure crystals, which give a natural generalization of reduced dual Kogan faces. We also relate reduced Kogan faces with Demazure crystals using the theory of mitosis operators, and apply these observations to develop the theory of Schubert calculus on symplectic Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes.

Combinatorics of Multicompositions
Published in Combinatorial and Additive Number Theory IV, ed. Nathanson, Springer Proceedings 347 (2021) 307-321 • View PublicationBIB
Integer compositions with certain colored parts were introduced by Andrews in 2007 to address a number-theoretic problem. Integer compositions allowing zero as some parts were introduced by Ouvry and Polychronakos in 2019. We give a bijection between these two varieties of compositions and determine various combinatorial properties of these multicompositions. In particular, we determine the count of multicompositions by number of all parts, number of positive parts, and number of zeros. Then, working from three types of compositions with restricted parts that are counted by the Fibonacci sequence, we find the sequences counting multicompositions with analogous restrictions. With these tools, we give combinatorial proofs of summation formulas for generalizations of the Jacobsthal and Pell sequences.

Toric Newton-Okounkov functions with an application to the rationality of certain Seshadri constants on surfaces
We initiate a combinatorial study of Newton-Okounkov functions on toric varieties with an eye on the rationality of asymptotic invariants of line bundles. In the course of our efforts we identify a combinatorial condition which ensures a controlled behavior of the appropriate Newton-Okounkov function on a toric surface. Our approach yields the rationality of many Seshadri constants that have not been settled before.

Signed Mahonian on Parabolic Quotients of Colored Permutation Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the generating polynomial of the flag major index with each one-dimensional character, called signed Mahonian polynomial, over the colored permutation group, the wreath product of a cyclic group with the symmetric group. Using the insertion lemma of Han and Haglund-Loehr-Remmel and a signed extension established by Eu et al., we derive the signed Mahonian polynomial over the quotients of parabolic subgroups of the colored permutation group, for a variety of systems of coset representatives in terms of subsequence restrictions. This generalizes the related work over parabolic quotients of the symmetric group due to Caselli as well as to Eu et al. As a byproduct, we derive a product formula that generalizes Biagioli's result about the signed Mahonian on the even signed permutation groups.

The bipermutahedron
Published • View PublicationBIB
The harmonic polytope and the bipermutahedron are two related polytopes which arose in Ardila, Denham, and Huh's work on the Lagrangian geometry of matroids. We study the bipermutahedron. We show that its faces are in bijection with the vertex-labeled and edge-labeled multigraphs with no isolated vertices; the generating function for its f-vector is a simple evaluation of the three variable Rogers--Ramanujan function. We show that the h-polynomial of the bipermutahedral fan is the biEulerian polynomial, which counts bipermutations according to their number of descents. We construct a unimodular triangulation of the product of n triangles that is combinatorially equivalent to (the triple cone over) the nth bipermutahedral fan. Ehrhart theory then gives us a formula for the biEulerian polynomial, which we use to show that this polynomial is real-rooted and that the h-vector of the bipermutahedral fan is log-concave and unimodal. We describe all the deformations of the bipermutahedron; that is, the ample cone of the bipermutahedral toric variety. We prove that among all polytopes in this family, the bipermutahedron has the largest possible symmetry group. Finally, we show that the Minkowski quotient of the bipermutahedron and the harmonic polytope equals 2.

Cubic graphs that cannot be covered with four perfect matchings
A conjecture of Berge suggests that every bridgeless cubic graph can have its edges covered with at most five perfect matchings. Since three perfect matchings suffice only when the graph in question is $3$-edge-colourable, the rest of cubic graphs falls into two classes: those that can be covered with four perfect matchings, and those that need at least five. Cubic graphs that require more than four perfect matchings to cover their edges are particularly interesting as potential counterexamples to several profound and long-standing conjectures including the celebrated cycle double cover conjecture. However, so far they have been extremely difficult to find. In this paper we build a theory that describes coverings with four perfect match\-ings as flows whose flow values and outflow patterns form a configuration of six lines spanned by four points of the 3-dimensional projective space $\mathbb{P}_3(\mathbb{F}_2)$ in general position. This theory provides powerful tools for investigation of graphs that do not admit such a cover and offers a great variety of methods for their construction. As an illustrative example we produce a rich family of snarks (nontrivial cubic graphs with no $3$-edge-colouring) that cannot be covered with four perfect matchings. The family contains all previously known graphs with this property.

Joints of varieties
Published in Geom. Funct. Anal. 32, 302--339 (2022) • View PublicationBIB
We generalize the Guth--Katz joints theorem from lines to varieties. A special case says that $N$ planes (2-flats) in 6 dimensions (over any field) have $O(N^{3/2})$ joints, where a joint is a point contained in a triple of these planes not all lying in some hyperplane. More generally, we prove the same bound when the set of $N$ planes is replaced by a set of 2-dimensional algebraic varieties of total degree $N$, and a joint is a point that is regular for three varieties whose tangent planes at that point are not all contained in some hyperplane. Our most general result gives upper bounds, tight up to constant factors, for joints with multiplicities for several sets of varieties of arbitrary dimensions (known as Carbery's conjecture). Our main innovation is a new way to extend the polynomial method to higher dimensional objects, relating the degree of a polynomial and its orders of vanishing on a given set of points on a variety.

Diagonal degenerations of matrix Schubert varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
Knutson and Miller (2005) established a connection between the anti-diagonal Gröbner degenerations of matrix Schubert varieties and the pre-existing combinatorics of pipe dreams. They used this correspondence to give a geometrically-natural explanation for the appearance of the combinatorially-defined Schubert polynomials as representatives of Schubert classes. Recently, Hamaker, Pechenik, and Weigandt (2022) proposed a similar connection between diagonal degenerations of matrix Schubert varieties and bumpless pipe dreams, newer combinatorial objects introduced by Lam, Lee, and Shimozono (2021). Hamaker, Pechenik, and Weigandt described new generating sets of the defining ideals of matrix Schubert varieties and conjectured a characterization of permutations for which these generating sets form diagonal Gröbner bases. They proved special cases of this conjecture and described diagonal degenerations of matrix Schubert varieties in terms of bumpless pipe dreams in these cases. The purpose of this paper is to prove the conjecture in full generality. The proof uses a connection between liaison and geometric vertex decomposition established in earlier work with Rajchgot (2021).

The Universal Valuation of Coxeter Matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
Coxeter matroids generalize matroids just as flag varieties of Lie groups generalize Grassmannians. Valuations of Coxeter matroids are functions that behave well with respect to subdivisions of a Coxeter matroid into smaller ones. We compute the universal valuative invariant of Coxeter matroids. A key ingredient is the family of Coxeter Schubert matroids, which correspond to the Bruhat cells of flag varieties. In the process, we compute the universal valuation of generalized Coxeter permutohedra, a larger family of polyhedra that model Coxeter analogues of combinatorial objects such as matroids, clusters, and posets.

Parking function varieties for combinatorial tree models
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the enumeration problem for different kind of tree parking functions introduced recently, called tree parking functions, tree parking distributions, prime tree parking functions, and prime tree parking distributions, for rooted labelled trees of important combinatorial tree families including labelled ordered, unordered and binary trees. Using combinatorial decompositions of the underlying structures yields, after solving the resulting equations, implicit characterizations of suitable generating functions of the total number of such tree parking functions for trees of size $n$ and $n$ successful drivers, from which we obtain exact and asymptotic enumeration results. The approach can be extended to the general situation of tree parking functions for trees of size $n$ and $m<n$ drivers for which we are also able to characterize the generating functions solutions, which allow, by applying analytic combinatorics techniques, a study of the asymptotic behaviour of the total number of tree parking functions and distributions for $n \to \infty$ depending on the load factor $0 < α= \frac{m}{n} < 1$.

Characteristic dependence of syzygies of random monomial ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
When do syzygies depend on the characteristic of the field? Even for well-studied families of examples, very little is known. For a family of random monomial ideals, namely the Stanley--Reisner ideals of random flag complexes, we prove that the Betti numbers asymptotically almost always depend on the characteristic. Using this result, we also develop a heuristic for characteristic dependence of asymptotic syzygies of algebraic varieties.

Turán and Ramsey problems for alternating multilinear maps
Guided by the connections between hypergraphs and exterior algebras, we study Turán and Ramsey type problems for alternating multilinear maps. This study lies at the intersection of combinatorics, group theory, and algebraic geometry, and has origins in the works of Lovász (Proc. Sixth British Combinatorial Conf., 1977), Buhler, Gupta, and Harris (J. Algebra, 1987), and Feldman and Propp (Adv. Math., 1992). Our main result is a Ramsey theorem for alternating bilinear maps. Given $s, t\in \mathbb{N}$, $s, t\geq 2$, and an alternating bilinear map $f:V\times V\to U$ with $\dim(V)=s\cdot t^4$, we show that there exists either a dimension-$s$ subspace $W\leq V$ such that $\dim(f(W, W))=0$, or a dimension-$t$ subspace $W\leq V$ such that $\dim(f(W, W))=\binom{t}{2}$. This result has natural group-theoretic (for finite $p$-groups) and geometric (for Grassmannians) implications, and leads to new Ramsey-type questions for varieties of groups and Grassmannians.

A Birkhoff-Bruhat Atlas for partial flag varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
A partial flag variety ${\mathcal {P}}_K$ of a Kac-Moody group $G$ has a natural stratification into projected Richardson varieties. When $G$ is a connected reductive group, a Bruhat atlas for ${\mathcal {P}}_K$ was constructed by He, Knutson and Lu: ${\mathcal {P}}_K$ is locally modeled with Schubert varieties in some Kac-Moody flag variety as stratified spaces. The existence of Bruaht atlases implies some nice combinatorial and geometric properties on the partial flag varieties and the decomposition into projected Richardson varieties. A Bruhat atlas does not exist for partial flag varieties of an arbitrary Kac-Moody group due to combinatorial and geometric reasons. To overcome obstructions, we introduce the notion of Birkhoff-Bruhat atlas. Instead of the Schubert varieties used in a Bruhat atlas, we use the $J$-Schubert varieties for a Birkhoff-Bruhat atlas. The notion of the $J$-Schubert varieties interpolates Birkhoff decomposition and Bruhat decomposition of the full flag variety (of a larger Kac-Moody group). The main result of this paper is the construction of a Birkhoff-Bruhat atlas for any partial flag variety ${\mathcal {P}}_K$ of a Kac-Moody group. We also construct a combinatorial atlas for the index set $Q_K$ of the projected Richardson varieties in ${\mathcal {P}}_K$. As a consequence, we show that $Q_K$ has some nice combinatorial properties. This gives a new proof and generalizes the work of Williams in the case where the group $G$ is a connected reductive group.

Path spaces I: A Menger-type result
Infinite graphs are finitary in the sense that their points are connected via finite paths. So what would an infinitary generalization of finite graphs look like? Usually this question is answered with the aid of topology, e.g. in the case of graph-like spaces. Here we introduce a more combinatorial answer, which we call path space, and prove a version of Menger's theorem for it. Since there are many topological path-like objects which induce path spaces, this result can be applied in a variety of settings.

Coxeter combinatorics and spherical Schubert geometry
Published in Journal of Lie Theory 32 (2022), No. 2, 447--474 • Search Publication
For a finite Coxeter system and a subset of its diagram nodes, we define spherical elements (a generalization of Coxeter elements). Conjecturally, for Weyl groups, spherical elements index Schubert varieties in a flag manifold G/B that are spherical for the action of a Levi subgroup. We evidence the conjecture, employing the combinatorics of Demazure modules, and work of R. Avdeev-A. Petukhov, M. Can-R. Hodges, R. Hodges-V. Lakshmibai, P. Karuppuchamy, P. Magyar-J. Weyman-A. Zelevinsky, N. Perrin, J. Stembridge, and B. Tenner. In type A, we establish connections with the key polynomials of A. Lascoux- M.-P. Schützenberger, multiplicity-freeness, and split-symmetry in algebraic combinatorics. Thereby, we invoke theorems of A. Kohnert, V. Reiner-M. Shimozono, and C. Ross-A. Yong.

Hodge theory for tropical varieties
In this paper we prove that the cohomology of smooth projective tropical varieties verify the tropical analogs of three fundamental theorems which govern the cohomology of complex projective varieties: Hard Lefschetz theorem, Hodge-Riemann relations and monodromy-weight conjecture. On the way to establish these results, we introduce and prove other results of independent interest. This includes a generalization of the results of Adiprasito-Huh-Katz, Hodge theory for combinatorial geometries, to any unimodular quasi-projective fan having the same support as the Bergman fan of a matroid, a tropical analog for Bergman fans of the pioneering work of Feichtner-Yuzvinsky on cohomology of wonderful compactifications (treated in a separate paper, recalled and used here), a combinatorial study of the tropical version of the Steenbrink spectral sequence, a treatment of Kahler forms in tropical geometry and their associated Hodge-Lefschetz structures, a tropical version of the projective bundle formula, and a result in polyhedral geometry on the existence of quasi-projective unimodular triangulations of polyhedral spaces.

Symplectic PBW Degenerate Flag Varieties; PBW Tableaux and Defining Equations
Published in Transformation Groups (2022) • View PublicationBIB
We define a set of PBW-semistandard tableaux that is in a weight preserving bijection with the set of monomials corresponding to integral points in the Feigin-Fourier-Littelmann-Vinberg polytope for highest weight modules of the symplectic Lie algebra. We then show that these tableaux parametrize bases of the homogeneous coordinate rings of the complete symplectic original and PBW degenerate flag varieties. From this construction, we provide explicit degenerate relations that generate the defining ideal of the PBW degenerate variety. These relations consist of type A degenerate Plücker relations and a set of degenerate linear relations that we obtain from De Concini's linear relations.

Demazure crystals and the Schur positivity of Catalan functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Catalan functions, the graded Euler characteristics of certain vector bundles on the flag variety, are a rich class of symmetric functions which include $k$-Schur functions and parabolic Hall-Littlewood polynomials. We prove that Catalan functions indexed by partition weight are the characters of $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_\ell)$-generalized Demazure crystals as studied by Lakshmibai-Littelmann-Magyar and Naoi. We obtain Schur positive formulas for these functions, settling conjectures of Chen-Haiman and Shimozono-Weyman. Our approach more generally gives key positive formulas for graded Euler characteristics of certain vector bundles on Schubert varieties by matching them to characters of generalized Demazure crystals.

Incidences with curves in three dimensions
We study incidence problems involving points and curves in $R^3$. The current (and in fact only viable) approach to such problems, pioneered by Guth and Katz, requires a variety of tools from algebraic geometry, most notably (i) the polynomial partitioning technique, and (ii) the study of algebraic surfaces that are ruled by lines or, in more recent studies, by algebraic curves of some constant degree. By exploiting and refining these tools, we obtain new and improved bounds for point-curve incidence problems in $R^3$. Incidences of this kind have been considered in several previous studies, starting with Guth and Katz's work on points and lines. Our results, which are based on the work of Guth and Zahl concerning surfaces that are doubly ruled by curves, provide a grand generalization of most of the previous results. We reconstruct the bound for points and lines, and improve, in certain significant ways, recent bounds involving points and circles (in Sharir, Sheffer and Zahl), and points and arbitrary constant-degree algebraic curves (in Sharir, Sheffer and Solomon). While in these latter instances the bounds are not known (and are strongly suspected not) to be tight, our bounds are, in a certain sense, the best that can be obtained with this approach, given the current state of knowledge. As an application of our point-curve incidence bound, we show that the number of triangles spanned by a set of $n$ points in $R^3$ and similar to a given triangle is $O(n^{15/7})$, which improves the bound of Agarwal et al. Our results are also related to a study by Guth et al.~(work in progress), and have been recently applied in Sharir, Solomon and Zlydenko to related incidence problems in three dimensions.
Quantization of deformed cluster Poisson varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
Fock and Goncharov described a quantization of cluster $\mathcal{X}$-varieties (also known as cluster Poisson varieties) in [FG09]. Meanwhile, families of deformations of cluster $\mathcal{X}$-varieties were introduced in [BFMNC18]. In this paper we show that the two constructions are compatible -- we extend the Fock-Goncharov quantization of $\mathcal{X}$-varieties to the families of [BFMNC18]. As a corollary, we obtain that these families and each of their fibers have Poisson structures. We relate this construction to the Berenstein-Zelevinsky quantization of $\mathcal{A}$-varieties ([BZ05]). Finally, inspired by the counter-example to quantum positivity of the quantum greedy basis in [LLRZ14], we compute a counter-example to quantum positivity of the quantum theta basis.
