Counting independent sets in Riordan graphs

The notion of a Riordan graph was introduced recently, and it is a far-reaching generalization of the well-known Pascal graphs and Toeplitz graphs. However, apart from a certain subclass of Toeplitz graphs, nothing was known on independent sets in Riordan graphs.
In this paper, we give exact enumeration and lower and upper bounds for the number of independent sets for various classes of Riordan graphs. Remarkably, we offer a variety of methods to solve the problems that range from the structural decomposition theorem to methods in combinatorics on words. Some of our results are valid for any graph.

Subword complexes were defined by A.Knutson and E.Miller in 2004 for describing Gröbner degenerations of matrix Schubert varieties. The facets of such a complex are indexed by pipe dreams, or, equivalently, by the monomials in the corresponding Schubert polynomial. In 2017 S.Assaf and D.Searles defined a basis of slide polynomials, generalizing Stanley symmetric functions, and described a combinatorial rule for expanding Schubert polynomials in this basis. We describe a decomposition of subword complexes into strata called slide complexes, that correspond to slide polynomials. The slide complexes are shown to be homeomorphic to balls or spheres.
Affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties and folded galleries governed by chimneys
We characterize the nonemptiness and dimension problems for an affine Deligne-Lusztig variety $X_x(b)$ in the affine flag variety in terms of galleries that are positively folded with respect to a chimney. If the parabolic subgroup associated to the Newton point of b has rank 1, we then prove nonemptiness for a certain class of Iwahori-Weyl group elements x by explicitly constructing such galleries.

For $\ell\geq 2$ and $h\in \mathbb{Z}[x_1,\dots,x_{\ell}]$ of degree $k\geq 2$, we show that every set $A\subseteq \{1,2,\dots,N\}$ lacking nonzero differences in $h(\mathbb{Z}^{\ell})$ satisfies $|A|\ll_h Ne^{-c(\log N)^μ}$, where $c=c(h)>0$, $μ=[(k-1)^2+1]^{-1}$ if $\ell=2$, and $μ=1/2$ if $\ell\geq 3$, provided $h(\mathbb{Z}^{\ell})$ contains a multiple of every natural number and $h$ satisfies certain nonsingularity conditions. We also explore these conditions in detail, drawing on a variety of tools from algebraic geometry.
Cohomology rings of toric bundles and the ring of conditions

The celebrated BKK Theorem expresses the number of roots of a system of generic Laurent polynomials in terms of the mixed volume of the corresponding system of Newton polytopes.Pukhlikov and the second author noticed that the cohomology ring of smooth projective toric varieties over $\mathbb{C}$ can be computed via the BKK Theorem. This complemented the known descriptions of the cohomology ring of toric varieties, like the one in terms of Stanley-Reisner algebras.
Sankaran and Uma generalized the "Stanley-Reisner description" to the case of toric bundles, i.e. equivariant compactifications of (not necessarily algebraic) torus principal bundles. We provide a description of the cohomology ring of toric bundles which is based on a generalization of the \BKK Theorem, and thus extends the approach by Pukhlikov and the second author. Indeed, for every cohomology class of the base of the toric bundle, we obtain a BKK-type theorem. Furthermore, our proof relies on a description of graded-commutative algebras which satisfy Poincaré duality.
From this computation of the cohomology ring of toric bundles, we obtain a description of the ring of conditions of horospherical homogeneous spaces as well as a version of Brion-Kazarnovskii theorem for them. We conclude the manuscript with a number of examples. In particular, we apply our results to toric bundles over a full flag variety $G/B$. The description that we get generalizes the corresponding description of the cohomology ring of toric varieties as well as the one of full flag varieties $G/B$ previously obtained by Kaveh.

We let $A=R/I$ be a standard graded Artinian algebra quotient of $R={\sf k}[x,y]$, the polynomial ring in two variables over a field ${\sf k}$ by an ideal $I$, and let $n$ be its vector space dimension. The Jordan type $P_\ell$ of a linear form $\ell\in A_1$ is the partition of $n$ determining the Jordan block decomposition of the multiplication on $A$ by $\ell$ -- which is nilpotent. The first three authors previously determined which partitions of $n=\dim_{\sf k}A$ may occur as the Jordan type for some linear form $\ell$ on a graded complete intersection Artinian quotient $A=R/(f,g)$ of $R$, and they counted the number of such partitions for each complete intersection Hilbert function $T$ arXiv:1810.00716.\par
We here consider the family $\mathrm{G}_T$ of graded Artinian quotients $A=R/I$ of $R={\sf k}[x,y]$, having arbitrary Hilbert function $H(A)=T$. The Jordan cell $\mathbb V(E_P)$ corresponding to a partition $P$ having diagonal lengths $T$ is comprised of all ideals $I$ in $R$ whose initial ideal is the monomial ideal $E_P$ determined by $P$. These cells give a decomposition of the variety $\mathrm{G}_T$ into affine spaces. We determine the generic number $κ(P)$ of generators for the ideals in each cell $\mathbb V(E_P)$, generalizing a result of arXiv:1810.00716. In particular, we determine those partitions for which $κ(P)=κ(T)$, the generic number of generators for an ideal defining an algebra $A$ in $\mathrm{G}_T$. We also count the number of partitions $P$ of diagonal lengths $T$ having a given $κ(P)$. A main tool is a combinatorial and geometric result allowing us to split $T$ and any partition $P$ of diagonal lengths $T$ into simpler $T_i$ and partitions $P_i$, such that $\mathbb V(E_P)$ is the product of the cells $\mathbb V(E_{P_i})$, and $T_i$ is single-block: $\mathrm{G}_{T_i}$ is a Grassmannian.
Positroid cluster structures from relabeled plabic graphs

The Grassmannian is a disjoint union of open positroid varieties $P_v$, certain smooth irreducible subvarieties whose definition is motivated by total positivity. The coordinate ring of $P_v$ is a cluster algebra, and each reduced plabic graph $G$ for $P_v$ determines a cluster. We study the effect of relabeling the boundary vertices of $G$ by a permutation $r$. Under suitable hypotheses on the permutation, we show that the relabeled graph $G^r$ determines a cluster for a different open positroid variety $P_w$. As a key step of the proof, we show that $P_v$ and $P_w$ are isomorphic by a nontrivial twist isomorphism. Our constructions yield many cluster structures on each open positroid variety $P_w$, given by plabic graphs with appropriately relabeled boundary. We conjecture that the seeds in all of these cluster structures are related by a combination of mutations and Laurent monomial transformations involving frozen variables, and establish this conjecture for (open) Schubert and opposite Schubert varieties. As an application, we also show that for certain reduced plabic graphs $G$, the "source" cluster and the "target" cluster are related by mutation and Laurent monomial rescalings.

We initiate the study of applications of machine learning to Seiberg duality, focusing on the case of quiver gauge theories, a problem also of interest in mathematics in the context of cluster algebras. Within the general theme of Seiberg duality, we define and explore a variety of interesting questions, broadly divided into the binary determination of whether a pair of theories picked from a series of duality classes are dual to each other, as well as the multi-class determination of the duality class to which a given theory belongs. We study how the performance of machine learning depends on several variables, including number of classes and mutation type (finite or infinite). In addition, we evaluate the relative advantages of Naive Bayes classifiers versus Convolutional Neural Networks. Finally, we also investigate how the results are affected by the inclusion of additional data, such as ranks of gauge/flavor groups and certain variables motivated by the existence of underlying Diophantine equations. In all questions considered, high accuracy and confidence can be achieved.

We study parameter spaces of linear series on projective curves in the presence of unibranch singularities, i.e. {\it cusps}; and to do so, we stratify cusps according to value semigroup. We show that {\it generalized Severi varieties} of maps $\mathbb{P}^1 \rightarrow \mathbb{P}^n$ with images of fixed degree and arithmetic genus are often {\it reducible} whenever $n \geq 3$. We also prove that the Severi variety of degree-$d$ maps with a hyperelliptic cusp of delta-invariant $g \ll d$ is of codimension at least $(n-1)g$ inside the space of degree-$d$ holomorphic maps $\mathbb{P}^1 \rightarrow \mathbb{P}^n$; and that for small $g$, the bound is exact, and the corresponding space of maps is the disjoint union of unirational strata. Finally, we conjecture a generalization for unicuspidal rational curves associated to an {\it arbitrary} value semigroup.
Roots of Two-Terminal Reliability

Assume that the vertices of a graph $G$ are always operational, but the edges of $G$ are operational independently with probability $p \in[0,1]$. For fixed vertices $s$ and $t$, the \emph{two-terminal reliability} of $G$ is the probability that the operational subgraph contains an $(s,t)$-path, while the \emph{all-terminal reliability} of $G$ is the probability that the operational subgraph contains a spanning tree. Both reliabilities are polynomials in $p$, and have very similar behaviour in many respects. However, unlike all-terminal reliability, little is known about the roots of two-reliability polynomials. In a variety of ways, we shall show that the nature and location of the roots of two-terminal reliability polynomials have significantly different properties than those held by roots of the all-terminal reliability.

Majorization is a partial order on real vectors which plays an important role in a variety of subjects, ranging from algebra and combinatorics to probability and statistics. In this paper, we consider a generalized notion of majorization associated to an arbitrary root system $Φ,$ and show that it admits a natural characterization in terms of the values of spherical functions on any Riemannian symmetric space with restricted root system $Φ.$
A geometric characterisation of subvarieties of the standard E_6-variety related to the ternions, degenerate split quaternions and sextonions over arbitrary fields
The main achievement of this paper is a geometric characterisation of certain subvarieties of the Cartan variety (the standard projective variety associated to the split exceptional group of Lie type E_6) over an arbitrary field K. The characterised varieties arise as Veronese representations of certain ring projective planes over quadratic subalgebras of the split octonions over K (among which the sextonions, a 6-dimensional non-associative algebra). We describe how these varieties are linked to the Freudenthal-Tits magic square, and discuss how they would even fit in, when also allowing the sextonions and other "degenerate composition algebras" as the algebras used to construct the square.

We consider a $d$-dimensional well-formed weighted projective space $\mathbb{P}(\overline{w})$ as a toric variety associated with a fan $Σ(\overline{w})$ in $N_{\overline{w}} \otimes \mathbb{N}$ whose $1$-dimensional cones are spanned by primitive vectors $v_0, v_1, \ldots, v_d \in N_{\overline{w}}$ generating a lattice $N_{\overline{w}}$ and satisfying the linear relation $\sum_i w_i v_i =0$. For any fixed dimension $d$, there exist only finitely many weight vectors $\overline{w} = (w_0, \ldots, w_d)$ such that $\mathbb{P}(\overline{w})$ contains a quasi-smooth Calabi-Yau hypersurface $X_w$ defined by a transverse weighted homogeneous polynomial $W$ of degree $w = \sum_{i=0}^d w_i$. Using a formula of Vafa for the orbifold Euler number $χ_{\rm orb}(X_w)$, we show that for any quasi-smooth Calabi-Yau hypersurface $X_w$ the number $(-1)^{d-1}χ_{\rm orb}(X_w)$ equals the stringy Euler number $χ_{\rm str}(X_{\overline{w}}^*)$ of Calabi-Yau compactifications $X_{\overline{w}}^*$ of affine toric hypersurfaces $Z_{\overline{w}}$ defined by non-degenerate Laurent polynomials $f_{\overline{w}} \in \mathbb{C}[N_{\overline{w}}]$ with Newton polytope $\text{conv}(\{v_0, \ldots, v_d\})$. In the moduli space of Laurent polynomials $f_{\overline{w}}$ there always exists a special point $f_{\overline{w}}^0$ defining a mirror $X_{\overline{w}}^*$ with a $\mathbb{Z}/w\mathbb{Z}$-symmetry group such that $X_{\overline{w}}^*$ is birational to a quotient of a Fermat hypersurface via a Shioda map.

Let $G/P$ be a complex cominuscule flag manifold. We prove a type independent formula for the torus equivariant Mather class of a Schubert variety in $G/P$, and for a Schubert variety pulled back via the natural projection $G/Q \to G/P$. We apply this to find formulae for the local Euler obstructions of Schubert varieties, and for the torus equivariant localizations of the conormal spaces of these Schubert varieties. We conjecture positivity properties for the local Euler obstructions and for the Schubert expansion of Mather classes. We check the conjectures in many cases, by utilizing results of Boe and Fu about the characteristic cycles of the intersection homology sheaves of Schubert varieties. We also conjecture that certain `Mather polynomials' are unimodal in general Lie type, and log concave in type A.

The harmonic polytope

We study the harmonic polytope, which arose in Ardila, Denham, and Huh's work on the Lagrangian geometry of matroids. We describe its combinatorial structure, showing that it is a $(2n-2)$-dimensional polytope with $(n!)^2(1+\frac12+\cdots+\frac1n)$ vertices and $3^n-3$ facets. We also give a formula for its volume: it is a weighted sum of the degrees of the projective varieties of all the toric ideals of connected bipartite graphs with $n$ edges; or equivalently, a weighted sum of the lattice point counts of all the corresponding trimmed generalized permutahedra.
An Extremal Problem Motivated by Triangle-Free Strongly Regular Graphs

We introduce the following combinatorial problem. Let $G$ be a triangle-free regular graph with edge density $ρ$. What is the minimum value $a(ρ)$ for which there always exist two non-adjacent vertices such that the density of their common neighborhood is $\leq a(ρ)$? We prove a variety of upper bounds on the function $a(ρ)$ that are tight for the values $ρ=2/5,\ 5/16,\ 3/10,\ 11/50$, with $C_5$, Clebsch, Petersen and Higman-Sims being respective extremal configurations. Our proofs are entirely combinatorial and are largely based on counting densities in the style of flag algebras. For small values of $ρ$, our bound attaches a combinatorial meaning to Krein conditions that might be interesting in its own right. We also prove that for any $ε>0$ there are only finitely many values of $ρ$ with $a(ρ)\geqε$ but this finiteness result is somewhat purely existential (the bound is double exponential in $1/ε$).
Tropical flag varieties

Flag matroids are combinatorial abstractions of flags of linear subspaces, just as matroids are of linear subspaces. We introduce the flag Dressian as a tropical analogue of the partial flag variety, and prove a correspondence between: (a) points on the flag Dressian, (b) valuated flag matroids, (c) flags of projective tropical linear spaces, and (d) coherent flag matroidal subdivisions. We introduce and characterize projective tropical linear spaces, which serve as a fundamental tool in our proof. We apply the correspondence to prove that all valuated flag matroids on ground set up to size 5 are realizable, and give an example where this fails for a flag matroid on 6 elements.

We give an explicit subword complex description of the generators of the type cone of the g-vector fan of a finite type cluster algebra with acyclic initial seed. This yields in particular a description of the Newton polytopes of the F-polynomials in terms of subword complexes as conjectured by S. Brodsky and the third author. We then show that the cluster complex is combinatorially isomorphic to the totally positive part of the tropicalization of the cluster variety as conjectured by D. Speyer and L. Williams.
Geometric vertex decomposition and liaison

Geometric vertex decomposition and liaison are two frameworks that have been used to produce similar results about similar families of algebraic varieties. In this paper, we establish an explicit connection between these approaches. In particular, we show that each geometrically vertex decomposable ideal is linked by a sequence of elementary G-biliaisons of height 1 to an ideal of indeterminates and, conversely, that every G-biliaison of a certain type gives rise to a geometric vertex decomposition. As a consequence, we can immediately conclude that several well-known families of ideals are glicci, including Schubert determinantal ideals, defining ideals of varieties of complexes, and defining ideals of graded lower bound cluster algebras.
