Newton-Okounkov bodies of flag varieties and combinatorial mutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
A Newton-Okounkov body is a convex body constructed from a projective variety with a globally generated line bundle and with a higher rank valuation on the function field, which gives a systematic method of constructing toric degenerations of projective varieties. Its combinatorial properties heavily depend on the choice of a valuation, and it is a fundamental problem to relate Newton-Okounkov bodies associated with different kinds of valuations. In this paper, we address this problem for flag varieties using the framework of combinatorial mutations which was introduced in the context of mirror symmetry for Fano manifolds. By applying iterated combinatorial mutations, we connect specific Newton-Okounkov bodies of flag varieties including string polytopes, Nakashima-Zelevinsky polytopes, and FFLV polytopes.

Singularities of Schubert Varieties within a Right Cell
Published in SIGMA 17 (2021), 070, 9 pages • View PublicationBIB
We describe an algorithm which pattern embeds, in the sense of Woo-Yong, any Bruhat interval of a symmetric group into an interval whose extremes lie in the same right Kazhdan-Lusztig cell. This apparently harmless fact has applications in finding examples of reducible associated varieties of $\mathfrak{sl}_n$-highest weight modules, as well as in the study of $W$-graphs for symmetric groups, and in comparing various bases of irreducible representations of the symmetric group or its Hecke algebra. For example, we are able to systematically produce many negative answers to a question from the 1980s of Borho-Brylinski and Joseph, which had been settled by Williamson via computer calculations only in 2014.

Bumpless pipe dreams and alternating sign matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
In their work on the infinite flag variety, Lam, Lee, and Shimozono (2018) introduced objects called bumpless pipe dreams and used them to give a formula for double Schubert polynomials. We extend this formula to the setting of K-theory, giving an expression for double Grothendieck polynomials as a sum over a larger class of bumpless pipe dreams. Our proof relies on techniques found in an unpublished manuscript of Lascoux (2002). Lascoux showed how to write double Grothendieck polynomials as a sum over alternating sign matrices. We explain how to view the Lam-Lee-Shimozono formula as a disguised special case of Lascoux's alternating sign matrix formula. Knutson, Miller, and Yong (2009) gave a tableau formula for vexillary Grothendieck polynomials. We recover this formula by showing vexillary marked bumpless pipe dreams and flagged set-valued tableaux are in weight preserving bijection. Finally, we give a bijection between Hecke bumpless pipe dreams and decreasing tableaux. The restriction of this bijection to Edelman-Greene bumpless pipe dreams solves a problem of Lam, Lee, and Shimozono.

Slack Ideals in Macaulay2
Published in Published in Mathematical Software - ICMS 2020, pages 222-231, Cham, 2020, Springer International Publishing • View PublicationBIB
Recently Gouveia, Thomas and the authors introduced the slack realization space, a new model for the realization space of a polytope. It represents each polytope by its slack matrix, the matrix obtained by evaluating each facet inequality at each vertex. Unlike the classical model, the slack model naturally mods out projective transformations. It is inherently algebraic, arising as the positive part of a variety of a saturated determinantal ideal, and provides a new computational tool to study classical realizability problems for polytopes. We introduce the package SlackIdeals for Macaulay2, that provides methods for creating and manipulating slack matrices and slack ideals of convex polytopes and matroids. Slack ideals are often difficult to compute. To improve the power of the slack model, we develop two strategies to simplify computations: we scale as many entries of the slack matrix as possible to one; we then obtain a reduced slack model combining the slack variety with the more compact Grassmannian realization space model. This allows us to study slack ideals that were previously out of computational reach. As applications, we show that the well-known Perles polytope does not admit rational realizations and prove the non-realizability of a large quasi-simplicial sphere.

Self-dual intervals in the Bruhat order
Published in Selecta Mathematica volume 26, Article number: 77 (2020) • View PublicationBIB
Björner-Ekedahl prove that general intervals $[e,w]$ in Bruhat order are "top-heavy", with at least as many elements in the $i$-th corank as the $i$-th rank. Well-known results of Carrell and of Lakshmibai-Sandhya give the equality case: $[e,w]$ is rank-symmetric if and only if the permutation $w$ avoids the patterns $3412$ and $4231$ and these are exactly those $w$ such that the Schubert variety $X_w$ is smooth. In this paper we study the finer structure of rank-symmetric intervals $[e,w]$, beyond their rank functions. In particular, we show that these intervals are still "top-heavy" if one counts cover relations between different ranks. The equality case in this setting occurs when $[e,w]$ is self-dual as a poset; we characterize these $w$ by pattern avoidance and in several other ways.

Symmetries of stochastic colored vertex models
Published • View PublicationBIB
We discover a new property of the stochastic colored six-vertex model called flip-invariance. We use it to show that for a given collection of observables of the model, any transformation that preserves the distribution of each individual observable also preserves their joint distribution. This generalizes recent shift-invariance results of Borodin-Gorin-Wheeler. As limiting cases, we obtain similar statements for the Brownian last passage percolation, the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation, the Airy sheet, and directed polymers. Our proof relies on an equivalence between the stochastic colored six-vertex model and the Yang-Baxter basis of the Hecke algebra. We conclude by discussing the relationship of the model with Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials and positroid varieties in the Grassmannian.

Pólya enumeration theorems in algebraic geometry
Published • View PublicationBIB
We generalize a formula due to Macdonald that relates the singular Betti numbers of $X^{n}/G$ to those of $X$, where $X$ is a compact manifold and $G$ is any subgroup of the symmetric group $S_{n}$ acting on $X^{n}$ by permuting coordinates. Our result is completely axiomatic: in a general setting, given an endomorphism on the cohomology $H^{\bullet}(X)$, it explains how we can explicitly relate the Lefschetz series of the induced endomorphism on $H^{\bullet}(X^{n})^{G}$ to that of the given endomorphism on $H^{\bullet}(X)$ in the presence of the Künneth formula with respect to a cup product. For example, when $X$ is a compact manifold, we take the Lefschetz series given by the singular cohomology with rational coefficients. On the other hand, when $X$ is a projective variety over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$, we use the $l$-adic étale cohomology with a suitable choice of prime number $l$. We also explain how our formula generalizes the Pólya enumeration theorem, a classical theorem in combinatorics that counts colorings of a graph up to given symmetries, where $X$ is taken to be a finite set of colors. When $X$ is a smooth projective variety over $\mathbb{C}$, our formula also generalizes a result of Cheah that relates the Hodge numbers of $X^{n}/G$ to those of $X$. We will also see that our result generalizes the following facts: 1. the generating function of the Poincaré polynomials of symmetric powers of a compact manifold $X$ is rational; 2. the generating function of the Hodge-Deligne polynomials of symmetric powers of a smooth projective variety $X$ over $\mathbb{C}$ is rational; 3. the zeta series of a projective variety $X$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ is rational. We also prove analogous rationality results when we replace $S_{n}$ with $A_{n}$, alternating groups.
Groups of automorphisms of Riemann surfaces and maps of genus $p+1$ where $p$ is prime
Published • View PublicationBIB
We classify compact Riemann surfaces of genus $g$, where $g-1$ is a prime $p$, which have a group of automorphisms of order $ρ(g-1)$ for some integer $ρ\ge 1$, and determine isogeny decompositions of the corresponding Jacobian varieties. This extends results of Belolipetzky and the second author for $ρ>6$, and of the first and third authors for $ρ=3, 4, 5$ and $6$. As a corollary we classify the orientably regular hypermaps (including maps) of genus $p+1$, together with the non-orientable regular hypermaps of characteristic $-p$, with automorphism group of order divisible by the prime $p$; this extends results of Conder, \v Sirá\v n and Tucker for maps.
Towards a Computational Proof of Vizing's Conjecture using Semidefinite Programming and Sums-of-Squares
Published • View PublicationBIB
Vizing's conjecture (open since 1968) relates the product of the domination numbers of two graphs to the domination number of their Cartesian product graph. In this paper, we formulate Vizing's conjecture as a Positivstellensatz existence question. In particular, we select classes of graphs according to their number of vertices and their domination number and encode the conjecture as an ideal/polynomial pair such that the polynomial is non-negative on the variety associated with the ideal if and only if the conjecture is true for this graph class. Using semidefinite programming we obtain numeric sum-of-squares certificates, which we then manage to transform into symbolic certificates confirming non-negativity of our polynomials. Specifically, we obtain exact low-degree sparse sum-of-squares certificates for particular classes of graphs. The obtained certificates allow generalizations for larger graph classes. Besides computational verification of these more general certificates, we also present theoretical proofs as well as conjectures and questions for further investigations.

Classification of minimally unsatisfiable 2-CNFs
We consider minimally unsatisfiable 2-CNFs (short 2-MUs). Characterisations of 2-MUs in the literature have been restricted to the nonsingular case (where every variable occurs positively and negatively at least twice), and those with a unit-clause. We provide the full classification of 2-MUs F. The main tool is the implication digraph, and we show that the implication digraph of F is a "weak double cycle" (WDC), a big cycle of small cycles (with possible overlaps). Combining logical and graph-theoretical methods, we prove that WDCs have at most one skew-symmetry, and thus we obtain that the isomorphisms between 2-MUs F, F' are exactly the isomorphisms between their implication digraphs. We obtain a variety of applications. For fixed deficiency k, the difference of the number of clauses of F and the number n of variables of F, the automorphism group of F is a subgroup of the Dihedral group with 4k elements. The isomorphism problem restricted to 2-MUs F is decidable in linear time for fixed k. The number of isomorphism types of 2-MUs for fixed k is Theta(n^(3k-1)). The smoothing (removal of linear vertices) of skew-symmetric WDCs corresponds exactly to the canonical normal form of F obtained by 1-singular DP-reduction, a restricted form of DP-reduction (or "variable elimination") only reducing variables of degree 2. The isomorphism types of these normal forms, i.e., the homeomorphism types of skew-symmetric WDCs, are in one-to-one correspondence with binary bracelets (or "turnover necklaces") of length k.
Moduli spaces of codimension-one subspaces in a linear variety and their tropicalization
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 29(2) P2.31 (2022), 33 pages • View PublicationBIB
We study the moduli space of $d$-dimensional linear subspaces contained in a fixed $(d+1)$-dimensional linear variety $X$, and its tropicalization. We prove that these moduli spaces are linear subspaces themselves, and thus their tropicalization is completely determined by their associated (valuated) matroids. We show that these matroids can be interpreted as the matroid of lines of the hyperplane arrangement corresponding to $X$, and generically are equal to a Dilworth truncation of the free matroid. In this way, we can describe combinatorially tropicalized Fano schemes and tropicalizations of moduli spaces of stable maps of degree $1$ to a plane.

Gröbner fans of Hibi ideals, generalized Hibi ideals and flag varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
The main goal of this paper is to give explicit descriptions of two maximal cones in the Gröbner fan of the Plücker ideal. These cones correspond to the monomial ideals given by semistandard and PBW-semistandard Young tableaux. For the first cone, as an intermediate result we obtain the description of a maximal cone in the Gröbner fan of any Hibi ideal. For the second, we generalize the notion of Hibi ideals by associating an ideal with every interpolating polytope. This is a family of polytopes that generalizes the order and chain polytopes of a poset (à la Fang--Fourier--Litza--Pegel). We then describe a maximal cone in the Gröbner fan of each of these ideals. We also establish some useful facts concerning PBW-semistandardness, in particular, we prove that it provides a new Hodge algebra structure on the Plücker algebra.

The asymptotic value of energy for matrices with degree-distance-based entries of random graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a graph $G=(V, E)$ and $i, j\in V$, denote the distance between $i$ and $j$ in $G$ by $D(i, j)$ and the degrees of $i$, $j$ by $d_i$, $d_j$, respectively. Let $f(D(i, j), d_{i}, d_{j})$ be a function symmetric in $i$ and $j$. Define a matrix $W_f(G)$, called the weighted distance matrix, of $G$, with the $ij$-entry $W_f(G)(i, j)=f(D(i, j), d_{i}, d_{j})$ if $i\neq j$ and $W_f(G)(i, j)=0$ if $i=j$. In this paper, we prove that if the symmetric function $f$ satisfies that $f(D(i, j), (1+o(1))np, (1+o(1))np)=(1+o(1))f(D(i, j), np, np)$, then for almost all graphs $G_p$ in the $Erd\ddot{o}s$-$R\acute{e}nyi$ random graph model $\mathcal{G}_{n, p}$, the energy of $W_f(G_p)$ is $\{(\frac{8}{3π}\sqrt{p(1-p)}+o(1))\cdot|f(1, np, np)-f(2, np, np)|+o(|f(2, np, np)|)\}\cdot n^{3/2}$. As a consequence, we give the asymptotic values of energies of a variety of weighted distance matrices with function $f$ from distance-based only and mixed with degree-distance-based topological indices of chemical use. This generalizes our former result with only degree-based weights.

Newton-Okounkov polytopes of Schubert varieties arising from cluster structures
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. Ser. B 12 (2025), 910--973 • View PublicationBIB
The theory of Newton-Okounkov bodies is a generalization of that of Newton polytopes for toric varieties, and it gives a systematic method of constructing toric degenerations of projective varieties. In this paper, we study Newton-Okounkov bodies of Schubert varieties from the theory of cluster algebras. We construct Newton-Okounkov bodies using specific valuations which generalize extended g-vectors in cluster theory, and discuss how these bodies are related to string polytopes and Nakashima-Zelevinsky polytopes.

In the present paper we extend the Riemann-Roch formalism to structure algebras of moment graphs. We introduce and study the Chern character and pushforwards for twisted fibrations of moment graphs. We prove an analogue of the Riemann-Roch theorem for moment graphs. As an application, we obtain the Riemann-Roch type theorem for equivariant $K$-theory of some Kac-Moody flag varieties.

Bruhat inversions in Weyl groups and torsion-free classes over preprojective algebras
Published in Comm. Algebra 49 (2021), no. 5, 2156--2189 • View PublicationBIB
For an element $w$ of the simply-laced Weyl group, Buan-Iyama-Reiten-Scott defined a subcategory $\mathcal{F}(w)$ of a module category over a preprojective algebra of Dynkin type. This paper aims at studying categorical properties of $\mathcal{F}(w)$ via its connection with the root system. We show that by taking dimension vectors, simple objects in $\mathcal{F}(w)$ bijectively correspond to Bruhat inversion roots of $w$. As an application, we obtain a combinatorial criterion for $\mathcal{F}(w)$ to satisfy the Jordan-Hölder property (JHP). To achieve this, we develop a method to find simple objects in a general torsion-free class by using a brick sequence associated to a maximal green sequence of it. For type A case, we give a diagrammatic construction of simple objects, and show that (JHP) can be characterized via a forest-like permutation, introduced by Bousquet-Mélou and Butler in the study of Schubert varieties.
Poincare polynomials of generic torus orbit closures in Schubert varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
The closure of a generic torus orbit in the flag variety $G/B$ of type $A$ is known to be a permutohedral variety and its Poincare polynomial agrees with the Eulerian polynomial. In this paper, we study the Poincare polynomial of a generic torus orbit closure in a Schubert variety in $G/B$. When the generic torus orbit closure in a Schubert variety is smooth, its Poincare polynomial is known to agree with a certain generalization of the Eulerian polynomial. We extend this result to an arbitrary generic torus orbit closure which is not necessarily smooth.

Singular loci of reflection arrangements and the containment problem
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper provides insights into the role of symmetry in studying polynomial functions vanishing to high order on an algebraic variety. The varieties we study are singular loci of hyperplane arrangements in projective space, with emphasis on arrangements arising from complex reflection groups. We provide minimal sets of equations for the radical ideals defining these singular loci and study containments between the ordinary and symbolic powers of these ideals.

Cohomology ring of manifold arrangements
We study the cohomology ring of the complement $\mathcal{M}(\mathcal{A})$ of a manifold arrangement $\mathcal{A}$ in a smooth manifold $M$ without boundary. We first give the concept of monoidal cosheaf on a locally geometric poset $\mathfrak{L}$, and then define the generalized Orlik--Solomon algebra $A^*(\mathfrak{L}, \mathcal{C})$ over a commutative ring with unit, which is built by the classical Orlik--Solomon algebra and a monoidal cosheaf $\mathcal{C}$ as coefficients. Furthermore, we construct a monoidal cosheaf $\hat{\mathcal{C}}(\mathcal{A})$ associated with $\mathcal{A}$, so that the generalized Orlik--Solomon algebra $A^*(\mathfrak{L}, \hat{\mathcal{C}}(\mathcal{A}))$ becomes a double complex with suitable multiplication structure and the associated total complex $Tot(A^*(\mathfrak{L}, \hat{\mathcal{C}}(\mathcal{A})))$ is a differential algebra. Our main result is that $H^*(Tot(A^*(\mathfrak{L}, \hat{\mathcal{C}}(\mathcal{A}))))$ is isomorphic to $H^*(\mathcal{M}(\mathcal{A}))$ as algebras. Our argument is of topological with the use of a spectral sequence induced by a geometric filtration associated with $\mathcal{A}$. In particular, we also discuss the mixed Hodge complex structure on our model if $M$ and all elements in $\mathcal{A}$ are complex smooth varieties, and show that it induces the canonical mixed Hodge structure of $\mathcal{M}(\mathcal{A})$. As an application, we calculate the cohomology of chromatic configuration spaces, which agrees with many known results in some special cases. In addition, some explicit formulas with respect to Poincaré polynomial and chromatic polynomial are also given.
