Equivariant K-theory and tangent spaces to Schubert varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
Tangent spaces to Schubert varieties of type A were characterized by Lakshmibai and Seshadri. This result was extended to the other classical types by Lakshmibai. We give a uniform characterization of tangent spaces to Schubert varieties in cominuscule G/P. Our results extend beyond cominuscule G/P; they describe the tangent space to any Schubert variety in G/B at a point xB, where x is a cominuscule Weyl group element in the sense of Peterson. Our results also give partial information about the tangent space to any Schubert variety at any point. Our method is to describe the tangent spaces of Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties, and then recover results for Schubert varieties. Our proof uses a relationship between weights of the tangent space of a variety with torus action, and factors of the class of the variety in torus equivariant K-theory. The proof relies on a formula for Schubert classes in equivariant K-theory due to Graham and Willems, as well as a theorem on subword complexes due to Knutson and Miller.

Repeated patterns in proper colourings
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a fixed graph $H$, what is the smallest number of colours $C$ such that there is a proper edge-colouring of the complete graph $K_n$ with $C$ colours containing no two vertex-disjoint colour-isomorphic copies, or repeats, of $H$? We study this function and its generalisation to more than two copies using a variety of combinatorial, probabilistic and algebraic techniques. For example, we show that for any tree $T$ there exists a constant $c$ such that any proper edge-colouring of $K_n$ with at most $c n^2$ colours contains two repeats of $T$, while there are colourings with at most $c' n^{3/2}$ colours for some absolute constant $c'$ containing no three repeats of any tree with at least two edges. We also show that for any graph $H$ containing a cycle there exist $k$ and $c$ such that there is a proper edge-colouring of $K_n$ with at most $c n$ colours containing no $k$ repeats of $H$, while, for a tree $T$ with $m$ edges, a colouring with $o(n^{(m+1)/m})$ colours contains $ω(1)$ repeats of $T$.

Semi-dynamic Algorithms for Strongly Chordal Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
There is an extensive literature on dynamic algorithms for a large number of graph theoretic problems, particularly for all varieties of shortest path problems. Germane to this paper are a number fully dynamic algorithms that are known for chordal graphs. However, to the best of our knowledge no study has been done for the problem of dynamic algorithms for strongly chordal graphs. To address this gap, in this paper, we propose a semi-dynamic algorithm for edge-deletions and a semi-dynamic algorithm for edge-insertions in a strongly chordal graph, $G = (V, E)$, on $n$ vertices and $m$ edges. The query complexity of an edge-deletion is $O(d_u^2d_v^2 (n + m))$, where $d_u$ and $d_v$ are the degrees of the vertices $u$ and $v$ of the candidate edge $\{u, v\}$, while the query-complexity of an edge-insertion is $O(n^2)$.

Rigid toric matrix Schubert varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a given permutation $π\in S_N$, Fulton proves that the matrix Schubert variety $\overline{X_π} \cong Y_π \times \mathbb{C}^q$ can be defined via certain rank conditions encoded in the Rothe diagram of $π$. In the case where $Y_π:=\text{TV}(σ_π)$ is toric (with respect to a $(\mathbb{C}^*)^{2N-1}$ action), we show that it can be described as an edge ideal of a bipartite graph $G^π$. We characterize the lower dimensional faces of the associated so-called edge cone $σ_π$ explicitly in terms of subgraphs of $G^π$ and present a combinatorial study for the first order deformations of $Y_π$. We prove that $Y_π$ is rigid if and only if the three-dimensional faces of $σ_π$ are all simplicial. Moreover, we reformulate this result in terms of Rothe diagram of $π$.

Combining realization space models of polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we examine four different models for the realization space of a polytope: the classical model, the Grassmannian model, the Gale transform model, and the slack variety. Respectively, they identify realizations of the polytopes with the matrix whose columns are the coordinates of their vertices, the column space of said matrix, their Gale transforms, and their slack matrices. Each model has been used to study realizations of polytopes. In this paper we establish very explicitly the maps that allow us to move between models, study their precise relationships, and combine the strengths of different viewpoints. As an illustration, we combine the compact nature of the Grassmannian model with the slack variety to obtain a reduced slack model that allows us to perform slack ideal calculations that were previously out of computational reach. These calculations allow us to answer the question of [Criado, Santos. Topological prismatoids and small simplicial spheres of large diameter. Experimental Mathematics, 1-13, 2019], about the realizability of a family of prismatoids, in general in the negative by proving the non-realizability of one of them.

Toric spaces and face enumeration on simplicial manifolds
In this paper, we study the well-know $g$-conjecture for rational homology spheres in a topological way. To do this, we construct a class of topological spaces with torus actions, which can be viewed as topological generalizations of toric varieties. Along this way we prove that after doing stellar subdivision operations at some middle dimensional faces of an arbitrary rational homology sphere, the $g$-conjecture is valid. Furthermore, we give topological proofs of several fundamental algebraic results about Buchsbaum complexes and simplicial manifolds. In this process, we also get a few interesting results in toric topology.

AFLT-type Selberg integrals
Published in Communications in Mathematical Physics 388 (2021), 735-791 • View PublicationBIB
In their 2011 paper on the AGT conjecture, Alba, Fateev, Litvinov and Tarnopolsky (AFLT) obtained a closed-form evaluation for a Selberg integral over the product of two Jack polynomials, thereby unifying the well-known Kadell and Hua--Kadell integrals. In this paper we use a variety of symmetric functions and symmetric function techniques to prove generalisations of the AFLT integral. These include (i) an $\mathrm{A}_n$ analogue of the AFLT integral, containing two Jack polynomials in the integrand; (ii) a generalisation of (i) for $γ=1$ (the Schur or GUE case), containing a product of $n+1$ Schur functions; (iii) an elliptic generalisation of the AFLT integral in which the role of the Jack polynomials is played by a pair of elliptic interpolation functions; (iv) an AFLT integral for Macdonald polynomials.

A polynomial upper bound for the mixing time of edge rotations on planar maps
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a natural local dynamic on the set of all rooted planar maps with $n$ edges that is in some sense analogous to "edge flip" Markov chains, which have been considered before on a variety of combinatorial structures (triangulations of the $n$-gon and quadrangulations of the sphere, among others). We provide the first polynomial upper bound for the mixing time of this "edge rotation" chain on planar maps: we show that the spectral gap of the edge rotation chain is bounded below by an appropriate constant times $n^{-11/2}$. In doing so, we provide a partially new proof of the fact that the same bound applies to the spectral gap of edge flips on quadrangulations, which makes it possible to generalise a recent result of the author and Stauffer to a chain that relates to edge rotations via Tutte's bijection.

Parametrization, structure and Bruhat order of certain spherical quotients
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a reductive algebraic group and let $Z$ be the stabilizer of a nilpotent element $e$ of the Lie algebra of $G$. We consider the action of $Z$ on the flag variety of $G$, and we focus on the case where this action has a finite number of orbits (i.e., $Z$ is a spherical subgroup). This holds for instance if $e$ has height $2$. In this case we give a parametrization of the $Z$-orbits and we show that each $Z$-orbit has a structure of algebraic affine bundle. In particular, in type $A$, we deduce that each orbit has a natural cell decomposition. In the aim to study the (strong) Bruhat order of the orbits, we define an abstract partial order on certain quotients associated to a Coxeter system. In type $A$, we show that the Bruhat order of the $Z$-orbits can be described in this way.

Dwork-type supercongruences through a creative $q$-microscope
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series A 178 (2021), Article 105362 • View PublicationBIB
We develop an analytical method to prove congruences of the type $$ \sum_{k=0}^{(p^r-1)/d}A_kz^k \equiv ω(z)\sum_{k=0}^{(p^{r-1}-1)/d}A_kz^{pk} \pmod{p^{mr}\mathbb Z_p[[z]]} \quad \text{for}\; r=1,2,\dots, $$ for primes $p>2$ and fixed integers $m,d\ge1$, where $f(z)=\sum_{k=0}^\infty A_kz^k$ is an "arithmetic" hypergeometric series. Such congruences for $m=d=1$ were introduced by Dwork in 1969 as a tool for $p$-adic analytical continuation of $f(z)$. Our proofs of several Dwork-type congruences corresponding to $m\ge2$ (in other words, supercongruences) are based on constructing and proving their suitable $q$-analogues, which in turn have their own right for existence and potential for a $q$-deformation of modular forms and of cohomology groups of algebraic varieties. Our method follows the principles of creative microscoping introduced by us to tackle $r=1$ instances of such congruences; it is the first method capable of establishing the supercongruences of this type for general $r$.

Permutations, moments, measures
Which combinatorial sequences correspond to moments of probability measures on the real line? We present a generating function, in the form of a continued fraction, for a fourteen-parameter family of such sequences and interpret these in terms of combinatorial statistics on the symmetric groups. Special cases include several classical and noncommutative probability laws, along with a substantial subset of the orthogonalizing measures in the q-Askey scheme, now given a new combinatorial interpretation in terms of elementary permutation statistics. This framework further captures a variety of interesting combinatorial sequences including, notably, the moment sequences associated to distributions of the numbers of occurrences of (classical and vincular) permutation patterns of length three. This connection between pattern avoidance and broader ideas in classical and noncommutative probability is among several intriguing new corollaries, which generalize and unify results previously appearing in the literature, while opening up new lines of inquiry. The fourteen combinatorial statistics further generalize to signed and colored permutations, and, as an infinite family of statistics, to the k-arrangements: permutations with k-colored fixed points, introduced here along with several related results and conjectures.
Compactifications of cluster varieties and convexity
Published • View PublicationBIB
In [GHKK18], Gross-Hacking-Keel-Kontsevich discuss compactifications of cluster varieties from "positive subsets" in the real tropicalization of the mirror. To be more precise, let $\mathfrak{D}$ be the scattering diagram of a cluster variety $V$ (of either type -- $\mathcal{A}$ or $\mathcal{X}$), and let $S$ be a closed subset of $\left(V^\vee\right)^{\text{trop}}(\mathbb{R})$ -- the ambient space of $\mathfrak{D}$. The set $S$ is positive if the theta functions corresponding to the integral points of $S$ and its $\mathbb{N}$-dilations define an $\mathbb{N}$-graded subalgebra of $Γ(V, \mathcal{O}_V)[x]$. In particular, a positive set $S$ defines a compactification of $V$ through a Proj construction applied to the corresponding $\mathbb{N}$-graded algebra. In this paper we give a natural convexity notion for subsets of $\mathfrak{D}$, called "broken line convexity", and show that a set is positive if and only if it is broken line convex. The combinatorial criterion of broken line convexity provides a tractable way to construct positive subsets of $\mathfrak{D}$, or to check positivity of a given subset.

Calabi-Yau properties of Postnikov diagrams
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma , Volume 10 , 2022 , e56 • View PublicationBIB
We show that the dimer algebra of a connected Postnikov diagram in the disc is bimodule internally 3-Calabi-Yau in the sense of the author's earlier work. As a consequence, we obtain an additive categorification of the cluster algebra associated to the diagram, which (after inverting frozen variables) is isomorphic to the homogeneous coordinate ring of a positroid variety in the Grassmannian by a recent result of Galashin and Lam. We show that our categorification can be realised as a full extension closed subcategory of Jensen-King-Su's Grassmannian cluster category, in a way compatible with their bijection between rank 1 modules and Plücker coordinates.
An additive basis for the cohomology rings of regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties

In this paper we construct an additive basis for the cohomology ring of a regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety which is obtained by extending all Poincaré duals of smaller regular nilpotent Hessenberg subvarieties. In particular, all of the Poincaré duals of smaller regular nilpotent Hessenberg subvarieties are linearly independent.

A gallery model for affine flag varieties via chimney retractions
This paper provides a unified combinatorial framework to study orbits in certain affine flag varieties via the associated Bruhat-Tits buildings. We first formulate, for arbitrary affine buildings, the notion of a chimney retraction. This simultaneously generalizes the two well-known notions of retractions in affine buildings: retractions from chambers at infinity and retractions from alcoves. We then present a recursive formula for computing the images of certain minimal galleries in the building under chimney retractions, using purely combinatorial tools associated to the underlying affine Weyl group. Finally, for Bruhat-Tits buildings in the function field case, we relate these retractions and their effect on minimal galleries to double coset intersections in the corresponding affine flag variety.
Smooth torus quotients of Schubert varieties in the Grassmannian

Let $r < n$ be positive integers and further suppose $r$ and $n$ are coprime. We study the GIT quotient of Schubert varieties $X(w)$ in the Grassmannian $G_{r,n}$, admitting semistable points for the action of $T$ with respect to the $T$-linearized line bundle ${\cal L}(nω_r)$. We give necessary and sufficient combinatorial conditions for the GIT quotient $T\backslash\mkern-6mu\backslash X(w)^{ss}_{T}({\cal L}(nω_r))$ to be smooth.

An equivariant basis for the cohomology of Springer fibers
Published • View PublicationBIB
Springer fibers are subvarieties of the flag variety that play an important role in combinatorics and geometric representation theory. In this paper, we analyze the equivariant cohomology of Springer fibers for $GL_n(\mathbb{C})$ using results of Kumar and Procesi that describe this equivariant cohomology as a quotient ring. We define a basis for the equivariant cohomology of a Springer fiber, generalizing a monomial basis of the ordinary cohomology defined by De Concini and Procesi and studied by Garsia and Procesi. Our construction yields a combinatorial framework with which to study the equivariant and ordinary cohomology rings of Springer fibers. As an application, we identify an explicit collection of (equivariant) Schubert classes whose images in the (equivariant) cohomology ring of a given Springer fiber form a basis.
Substitutes for the non-existent square lattice designs for 36 varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
Square lattice designs are often used in trials of new varieties of various agricultural crops. However, there are no square lattice designs for 36 varieties in blocks of size six for four or more replicates. Here we use three different approaches to construct designs for up to eight replicates. All the designs perform well in terms of giving a low average variance of variety contrasts. Supplementary materials are available online.

Techniques for determining equality of the maximum nullity and the zero forcing number of a graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is known that the zero forcing number of a graph is an upper bound for the maximum nullity of the graph. In this paper, we search for characteristics of a graph that guarantee the maximum nullity of the graph and the zero forcing number of the graph are the same by studying a variety of graph parameters which bound the maximum nullity of a graph below. In particular, we introduce a new graph parameter which acts as a lower bound for the maximum nullity of the graph. As a result, we show that the Aztec Diamond graph's maximum nullity and zero forcing number are the same. Other graph parameters that are considered are a Colin de Verdiére type parameter and the vertex connectivity. We also use matrices, such as a divisor matrix of a graph and an equitable partition of the adjacency matrix of a graph, to establish a lower bound for the nullity of the graph's adjacency matrix.
