Two Applications of Graph Minor Reduction
In this paper, we study two applications of graph minor reduction. In the first part of the paper, we introduce a variant of the boxicity, called strong boxicity, where the rectangular representation satisfies an additional condition that each rectangle contains at least one point not present in any other rectangle. We show how the strong boxicity of a graph~\(G\) can be estimated in terms of the strong boxicity of a minor~\(H\) and the number of edit operations needed to obtain~\(H\) from~\(G.\) In the second part of the paper, we consider false data injection (attack) in a flow graph~\(G\) and quantify the subsequent effect on the state of edges of~\(G\) via the \emph{edge variation factor}~\(θ.\) We use minor reduction techniques to obtain bounds on~\(θ\) in terms of the connectivity parameters of~\(G,\) when the attacker has complete knowledge of~\(G\) and also discuss stealthy attacks with partial knowledge of the flow graph.

Duality and Outermost Boundaries in Generalized Percolation Lattices
In this paper we consider a connected planar graph $G$ and impose conditions that results in $G$ having a percolation lattice-like cellular structure. Assigning each cell of $G$ to be either occupied or vacant, we describe the outermost boundaries of star and plus connected components in $G$. We then consider the dual graph of $G$ and impose conditions under which the dual is also a percolation lattice. Finally, using $G$ and its dual, we construct vacant cell cycles surrounding occupied components and study left right crossings and bond percolation in rectangles.

Size of local finite field Kakeya sets
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathbb{F}$ be a finite field consisting of $q$ elements and let $n \geq 1$ be an integer. In this paper, we study the size of local Kakeya sets with respect to subsets of $\mathbb{F}^{n}$ and obtain upper and lower bounds for the minimum size of a (local) Kakeya set with respect to an arbitrary set ${\mathcal T} \subseteq \mathbb{F}^{n}.$

Approximate MDS Property of Linear Codes
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we study the weight spectrum of linear codes with \emph{super-linear} field size and use the probabilistic method to show that for nearly all such codes, the corresponding weight spectrum is very close to that of a maximum distance separable (MDS) code.

Limits of Jensen polynomials for partitions and other sequences
It was discovered recently by Griffin, Ono, Rolen and Zagier that the Jensen polynomials associated to many sequences have Hermite polynomial limits. We develop this theory in detail, based on the log-polynomial property which is a refinement of log-concavity and log-convexity. Applications to various partition sequences are given. An application to the sequence of factorials leads naturally to evaluating limits of generalized Laguerre polynomials.

Stable sets of contracts in two-sided markets
We revisit the problem of existence of stable systems of contracts with arbitrary sets of contracts. We show that stable sets of contracts exists if choices of agents satisfy path-independence. We call such choice functions Plott functions. Our proof is based on application of Zorn lemma to a special poset of semi-stable pairs. Moreover, we construct a dynamic process on the poset (generalizing algorithm Gale and Shapley) steady states of which are stable sets. In Appendix we discuss Lehmann hyper-orders and establish a bijection between the set of Lehmann hyper-orders and the set of Plott functions.

Fragments in symmetric configurations with block size 3
We begin the study of collections of three blocks which can occur in a symmetric configuration with block size 3, $v_3$. Formulae are derived for the number of occurrences of these and it is shown that the triangle, i.e. abf, ace, bcd is a basis. It is also shown that symmetric configurations without triangles exist if and only if $v=15$ or $v \geq 17$. Such configurations containing "many" triangles are also discussed and a complete analysis of the triangle content of those with a cyclic automorphism is given.

Fibonacci colored compositions and applications
Published in Integers 21 (2021), Paper A91 • Search Publication
We study compositions whose parts are colored by subsequences of the Fibonacci numbers. We give explicit bijections between Fibonacci colored compositions and several combinatorial objects, including certain restricted ternary and quaternary words, spanning trees in the ladder graph, unimodal sequences covering an initial interval, and ordered-consecutive partition sequences. Our approach relies on the basic idea of representing the colored compositions as tilings of an $n$-board whose tiles are connected, and sometimes decorated, according to a suitable combinatorial interpretation of the given coloring sequence.

Multicoloured Ramsey numbers of the path of length four
Let $P_t$ denote the path on $t$ vertices. The $r$-coloured Ramsey number of $P_t$, denoted by $R_r(P_t)$, is the minimum integer $n$ such that whenever the complete graph on $n$ vertices is given an $r$-edge-colouring, there exists a monochromatic copy of $P_t$. In this note, we determine $R_r(P_5)$, which is approximately $3r$.

Generalised rigid body motions in non-Euclidean planes with applications to global rigidity
Published in Journal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications (2022) • View Publication • BIB
A bar-joint framework $(G,p)$ in a (non-Euclidean) real normed plane $X$ is the combination of a finite, simple graph $G$ and a placement $p$ of the vertices in $X$. A framework $(G,p)$ is globally rigid in $X$ if every other framework $(G,q)$ in $X$ with the same edge lengths as $(G,p)$ arises from an isometry of $X$. The weaker property of local rigidity in normed planes (where only $(G,q)$ within a neighbourhood of $(G,p)$ are considered) has been studied by several researchers over the last 5 years after being introduced by Kitson and Power for $\ell_p$-norms. However global rigidity is an unexplored area for general normed spaces, despite being intensely studied in the Euclidean context by many groups over the last 40 years. In order to understand global rigidity in $X$, we introduce new generalised rigid body motions in normed planes where the norm is determined by an analytic function. This theory allows us to deduce several geometric and combinatorial results concerning the global rigidity of bar-joint frameworks in $X$.

Tilings of the Sphere by Congruent Quadrilaterals with Exactly Two Equal Edges
In this paper we give a classification of tilings of the sphere by congruent quadrilaterals with exactly two equal edges. The tilings are the earth map tilings, $(p,q)$-earth map tilings and their flip modifications, and quadrilateral subdivisions of the cube and the triangular prism. We described the ranges of values of the edges and angles for the tile to be geometrically realisable. The symmetry groups of the tilings are also determined.

The birthday boy problem
In their recent preprint arXiv:2101.08308, Robert Dougherty-Bliss, Christoph Koutschan and Doron Zeilberger come up with a powerful strategy to prove the irrationality, in a quantitative form, of some numbers that are given as multiple integrals or quotients of such. What is really missing there, for many examples given, is an explicit identification of those irrational numbers; the authors comment on this task, "The output file [...] contains many such conjectured evaluations, (very possibly many of them are equivalent via a hypergeometric transformation rule) and we challenge [...], the birthday boy, or anyone else, to prove them." Without an identification, the numbers are hardly appealing to human (number theorists). The goal of this note is to outline a strategy to do the job and illustrate it on several promising entries discussed in the preprint above.

Biregularity in Sidorenko's Conjecture
Sidorenko's Conjecture says that the minimum density of a bigraph $G$ in a bigraphon $W$ of a given edge density is attained when $W$ is a constant function. A consequence of a result by B. Szegedy is that it is enough to show Sidorenko's Conjecture under the further assumption that $W$ is biregular. In this paper, we retrieve this result with a more elementary proof. With this biregularity result and some ideas of its proof, we also obtain simple proofs of several other results related to Sidorenko's Conjecture. Furthermore, we also show that bigraphs that have a special type of tree decomposition, called reflective tree decomposition, satisfy Sidorenko's conjecture. This both unifies and generalizes the notions of strong tree decompositions and $N$-decompositions from the literature.

Deformed Polynuclear Growth in $(1+1)$ Dimensions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce and study a one parameter deformation of the polynuclear growth (PNG) in $(1+1)$-dimensions, which we call the $t$-PNG model. It is defined by requiring that, when two expanding islands merge, with probability $t$ they sprout another island on top of the merging location. At $t=0$, this becomes the standard (non-deformed) PNG model that, in the droplet geometry, can be reformulated through longest increasing subsequences of uniformly random permutations or through an algorithm known as patience sorting. In terms of the latter, the $t$-PNG model allows errors to occur in the sorting algorithm with probability $t$. We prove that the $t$-PNG model exhibits one-point Tracy-Widom GUE asymptotics at large times for any fixed $t\in [0,1)$, and one-point convergence to the narrow wedge solution of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation as $t$ tends to $1$. We further construct distributions for an external source that are likely to induce Baik-Ben Arous-Peche type phase transitions. The proofs are based on solvable stochastic vertex models and their connection to the determinantal point processes arising from Schur measures on partitions.
The unbroken spectra of Frobenius seaweeds
We show that if $\mathfrak{g}$ is a Frobenius seaweed, then the spectrum of the adjoint of a principal element consists of an unbroken set of integers whose multiplicities have a symmetric distribution. Our methods are combinatorial.
Factorization length distribution for affine semigroups IV: a geometric approach to weighted factorization lengths in three-generator numerical semigroups
Published • View Publication • BIB
For numerical semigroups with three generators, we study the asymptotic behavior of weighted factorization lengths, that is, linear functionals of the coefficients in the factorizations of semigroup elements. This work generalizes many previous results, provides more natural and intuitive proofs, and yields a completely explicit error bound.
On the minimum degree of power graphs of finite nilpotent groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
The power graph $\mathcal{P}(G)$ of a group $G$ is the simple graph with vertex set $G$ and two vertices are adjacent whenever one of them is a positive power of the other. In this paper, for a finite noncyclic nilpotent group $G$, we study the minimum degree $δ(\mathcal{P}(G))$ of $\mathcal{P}(G)$. Under some conditions involving the prime divisors of $|G|$ and the Sylow subgroups of $G$, we identify certain vertices associated with the generators of maximal cyclic subgroups of $G$ such that $δ(\mathcal{P}(G))$ is equal to the degree of one of these vertices. As an application, we obtain $δ(\mathcal{P}(G))$ for some classes of finite noncyclic abelian groups $G$.

Subcubic planar graphs of girth 7 are class I
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that planar graphs of maximum degree 3 and of girth at least 7 are 3-edge-colorable, extending the previous result for girth at least 8 by Kronk, Radlowski, and Franen from 1974.
Baxter Tree-like Tableaux
Tree-like tableaux are objects in bijection with alternative or permutation tableaux. They have been the subject of a fruitful combinatorial study for the past few years. In the present work, we define and study a new subclass of tree-like tableaux enumerated by Baxter numbers. We exhibit simple bijective links between these objects and three other combinatorial classes: (packed or mosaic) floorplans, twisted Baxter permutations and triples of non-intersecting lattice paths. From several (and unrelated) works, these last objects are already known to be enumerated by Baxter numbers, and our main contribution is to provide a unifying approach to bijections between Baxter objects, where Baxter tree-like tableaux play the key role. We moreover get new enumerative results about alternating twisted Baxter permutations. Finally, we define a new subfamily of floorplans, which we call alternating floorplans, and we enumerate these combinatorial objects.
A Faster Algorithm for Quickest Transshipments via an Extended Discrete Newton Method
The Quickest Transshipment Problem is to route flow as quickly as possible from sources with supplies to sinks with demands in a network with capacities and transit times on the arcs. It is of fundamental importance for numerous applications in areas such as logistics, production, traffic, evacuation, and finance. More than 25 years ago, Hoppe and Tardos presented the first (strongly) polynomial-time algorithm for this problem. Their approach, as well as subsequently derived algorithms with strongly polynomial running time, are hardly practical as they rely on parametric submodular function minimization via Megiddo's method of parametric search. The main contribution of this paper is a considerably faster algorithm for the Quickest Transshipment Problem that instead employs a subtle extension of the Discrete Newton Method. This improves the previously best known running time of $\tilde{O}(m^4k^{14})$ to $\tilde O(m^2k^5+m^3k^3+m^3n)$, where $n$ is the number of nodes, $m$ the number of arcs, and $k$ the number of sources and sinks.
