The lattice of cycles of an undirected graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study bases of the lattice generated by the cycles of an undirected graph, defined as the integer linear combinations of the 0/1-incidence vectors of cycles. We prove structural results for this lattice, including explicit formulas for its dimension and determinant, and we present efficient algorithms to construct lattice bases, using only cycles as generators, in quadratic time. By algebraic considerations, we relate these results to the more general setting with coefficients from an arbitrary Abelian group. Our results generalize classical results for the vector space of cycles of a graph over the binary field to the case of an arbitrary field.
Computational and analytical studies of the Randić index in Erdös-Rényi models
In this work we perform computational and analytical studies of the Randić index $R(G)$ in Erdös-Rényi models $G(n,p)$ characterized by $n$ vertices connected independently with probability $p \in (0,1)$. First, from a detailed scaling analysis, we show that $\left\langle \overline{R}(G) \right\rangle = \left\langle R(G)\right\rangle/(n/2)$ scales with the product $ξ\approx np$, so we can define three regimes: a regime of mostly isolated vertices when $ξ< 0.01$ ($R(G)\approx 0$), a transition regime for $0.01 < ξ< 10$ (where $0<R(G)< n/2$), and a regime of almost complete graphs for $ξ> 10$ ($R(G)\approx n/2$). Then, motivated by the scaling of $\left\langle \overline{R}(G) \right\rangle$, we analytically (i) obtain new relations connecting $R(G)$ with other topological indices and characterize graphs which are extremal with respect to the relations obtained and (ii) apply these results in order to obtain inequalities on $R(G)$ for graphs in Erdös-Rényi models.

Weighted words at degree two, II: flat partitions, regular partitions, and application to level one perfect crystals
Published • View Publication • BIB
In a recent work, Keith and Xiong gave a refinement of Glaisher's theorem by using a Sylvester-style bijection. In this paper, we introduce two families of colored partitions, flat and regular partitions, and generalize the bijection of Keith and Xiong to these partitions. We then state two results, the first at degree one, where partitions have parts with primary colors, and the second result at degree two for secondary-colored partitions, using the result of the first paper of this series. These results allow us to easily retrieve the Frenkel-Kac character formulas of level one standard modules for the type $A_{2n}^{(2)}, D_{n+1}^{(2)}$ and $B_n^{(1)}$, and also to make the connection between the result stated in paper one and the representation theory.

Principal specializations of Schubert polynomials in classical types
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 4 (2021) no. 2, pp. 273-287 • View Publication • BIB
There is a remarkable formula for the principal specialization of a type A Schubert polynomial as a weighted sum over reduced words. Taking appropriate limits transforms this to an identity for the backstable Schubert polynomials recently introduced by Lam, Lee, and Shimozono. This note identifies some analogues of the latter formula for principal specializations of Schubert polynomials in classical types B, C, and D. We also describe some more general identities for Grothendieck polynomials. As a related application, we derive a simple proof of a pipe dream formula for involution Grothendieck polynomials.

Matching Book Embedding of the Cartesian Product of a Complete Graph and a Cycle
Published in Ars Combinatoria,2020(153),pp.89-97 • Search Publication
The $book$ $embedding$ of a graph $G$ is to place the vertices of $G$ on the spine and draw the edges to the pages so that the edges in the same page do not cross with each other. The book embedding is $matching$ if the pages have maximum degree $1$. The $matching$ $book$ $thickness$ is the minimum number of pages in which graphs can be matching book embedded. In this paper, we show that the matching book thickness of the Cartesian product $K_p\Box C_q$of a complete graph $K_p$ and a cycle $C_q$ is equal to $Δ(K_p\Box C_q)+1$.

On discrete surfaces: Enumerative geometry, matrix models and universality classes via topological recursion
The main objects under consideration in this thesis are called maps, a certain class of graphs embedded on surfaces. Our problems have a powerful relatively recent tool in common, the so-called topological recursion (TR) introduced by Chekhov, Eynard and Orantin. We call a map fully simple if it has non self-intersecting disjoint boundaries, and ordinary if such a restriction is not imposed. We study the combinatorial relation between fully simple and ordinary maps with the topology of a disk or a cylinder, which reproduces relations between moments and free cumulants established in the context of free probability. We propose a combinatorial interpretation of the exchange symplectic transformation of TR. We provide a matrix model interpretation for fully simple maps via the formal hermitian matrix model with external field and deduce a universal relation between generating series of fully simple and ordinary maps, which involves double monotone Hurwitz numbers. In particular, we obtain an ELSV-like formula for double $2$-orbifold strictly monotone Hurwitz numbers. We consider ordinary maps endowed with an $O(\mathsf{n})$ loop model, which is a classical model in statistical physics, and determine which shapes are more likely to occur by looking at the nesting properties of the loops decorating the maps. We want to study the limiting objects when the number of vertices becomes arbitrarily large, which can be done by studying the generating series at dominant singularities. We analyze the nesting statistics in the $O(\mathsf{n})$ loop model on random maps of arbitrary topologies in the presence of large and small boundaries, relying on previous results for disks and cylinders and TR for this model. We study the generating series of maps which realize a fixed nesting graph and characterize their critical behavior in the dense and dilute phases.

Exact minimum codegree thresholds for $K_4^-$-covering and $K_5^-$-covering
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given two $3$-graphs $F$ and $H$, an $F$-covering of $H$ is a collection of copies of $F$ in $H$ such that each vertex of $H$ is contained in at least one copy of them. Let {$c_2(n,F)$} be the maximum integer $t$ such that every 3-graph with minimum codegree greater than $t$ has an $F$-covering. In this note, we answer an open problem of Falgas-Ravry and Zhao (SIAM J. Discrete Math., 2016) by determining the exact value of {$c_2(n, K_4^-)$} and {$c_2(n, K_5^-)$}, where $K_t^-$ is the complete $3$-graph on $t$ vertices with one edge removed.

Fractional matching number and spectral radius of nonnegative matrix of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A fractional matching of a graph $G$ is a function $f:E(G) \to [0,1]$ such that for any $v\in V(G)$, $\sum_{e\in E_G(v)}f(e)\leq 1$ where $E_G(v) = \{e \in E(G): e$ is incident with $v$ in $G\}$. The fractional matching number of $G$ is $μ_{f}(G) = \max\{\sum_{e\in E(G)} f(e): f$ is fractional matching of $G\}$. For any real numbers $a \ge 0$ and $k \in (0, n)$, it is observed that if $n = |V(G)|$ and $δ(G) > \frac{n-k}{2}$, then $μ_{f}(G)>\frac{n-k}{2}$. We determine a function $\varphi(a, n,δ, k)$ and show that for a connected graph $G$ with $n = |V(G)|$, $δ(G) \leq\frac{n-k}{2}$, spectral radius $λ_1(G)$ and complement $\overline{G}$, each of the following holds. (i) If $λ_{1}(aD(G)+A(G))<\varphi(a, n, δ, k),$ then $μ_{f}(G)>\frac{n-k}{2}.$ (ii) If $λ_{1}(aD(\overline{G})+A(\overline{G}))<(a+1)(δ+k-1),$ then $μ_{f}(G)>\frac{n-k}{2}.$ As corollaries, sufficient spectral condition for fractional perfect matchings and analogous results involving $Q$-index and $A_α$-spectral radius are obtained, and former spectral results in [European J. Combin. 55 (2016) 144-148] are extended.

On Sum-Of-Tails Identities
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this article, a finite analogue of the generalized sum-of-tails identity of Andrews and Freitas is obtained. We derive several interesting results as special cases of this analogue, in particular, a recent identity of Dixit, Eyyyunni, Maji and Sood. We derive a new extension of Abel's lemma with the help of which we obtain a one-parameter generalization of a sum-of-tails identity of Andrews, Garvan and Liang, an identity of Ramanujan as well as two new results - one for Ramanujan's function $σ(q)$ and another for the function recently introduced by Andrews and Ballantine. Later we introduce a new generalization $\mathrm{FFW}_{c}(n)$ of a function of Fokkink, Fokkink and Wang and derive an identity for its generating function. This gives, as a special case, a recent representation for the generating function of $\mathrm{spt}(n)$ given by Andrews, Garvan and Liang. We also obtain some weighted partition identities along with new representations for two of Ramanujan's third order mock theta functions through combinatorial techniques.

On characterizing proper-max-point tolerance graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Max-point-tolerance graphs (MPTG) was introduced by Catanzaro et al. in 2017 as a generalization of interval graphs. This graph class has many practical applications in study of human genome as well as in signal processing for networks. The same class of graphs were also studied in the name of p-BOX(1) graphs by Soto and Caro in 2015. In our article, we consider a natural subclass of max-point-tolerance graphs namely, proper max-point-tolerance graphs (proper MPTG) where intervals associated to the vertices are not contained in each other properly. We present the first characterization theorem of this graph class by defining certain linear ordering on the vertex set. In course of this study we prove proper max-point-tolerance graphs are asteroidal triple free and perfect. We also find proper max-point-tolerance graphs are equivalent to unit max-point-tolerance graphs. Further we note that MPTG (proper MPTG) and max-tolerance graphs (proper max-tolerance graphs) are incomparable. In conclusion we demonstrate relations between proper MPTG with other variants of MPTG and max-tolerance graphs.

Caterpillars on three and four leaves are sufficient to reconstruct normal networks
Published in Journal of Mathematical Biology 81:961-980, 2020 • View Publication • BIB
While every rooted binary phylogenetic tree is determined by its set of displayed rooted triples, such a result does not hold for an arbitrary rooted binary phylogenetic network. In particular, there exist two non-isomorphic rooted binary temporal normal networks that display the same set of rooted triples. Moreover, without any structural constraint on the rooted phylogenetic networks under consideration, similarly negative results have also been established for binets and trinets which are rooted subnetworks on two and three leaves, respectively. Hence, in general, piecing together a rooted phylogenetic network from such a set of small building blocks appears insurmountable. In contrast to these results, in this paper, we show that a rooted binary normal network is determined by its sets of displayed caterpillars (particular type of subtrees) on three and four leaves. The proof is constructive and realises a polynomial-time algorithm that takes the sets of caterpillars on three and four leaves displayed by a rooted binary normal network and, up to isomorphism, reconstructs this network.
Excluding a ladder
Published in Combinatorica, 42:405--432, 2022 • View Publication • BIB
A ladder is a $2 \times k$ grid graph. When does a graph class $\mathcal{C}$ exclude some ladder as a minor? We show that this is the case if and only if all graphs $G$ in $\mathcal{C}$ admit a proper vertex coloring with a bounded number of colors such that for every $2$-connected subgraph $H$ of $G$, there is a color that appears exactly once in $H$. This type of vertex coloring is a relaxation of the notion of centered coloring, where for every connected subgraph $H$ of $G$, there must be a color that appears exactly once in $H$. The minimum number of colors in a centered coloring of $G$ is the treedepth of $G$, and it is known that classes of graphs with bounded treedepth are exactly those that exclude a fixed path as a subgraph, or equivalently, as a minor. In this sense, the structure of graphs excluding a fixed ladder as a minor resembles the structure of graphs without long paths. Another similarity is as follows: It is an easy observation that every connected graph with two vertex-disjoint paths of length $k$ has a path of length $k+1$. We show that every $3$-connected graph which contains as a minor a union of sufficiently many vertex-disjoint copies of a $2 \times k$ grid has a $2 \times (k+1)$ grid minor. Our structural results have applications to poset dimension. We show that posets whose cover graphs exclude a fixed ladder as a minor have bounded dimension. This is a new step towards the goal of understanding which graphs are unavoidable as minors in cover graphs of posets with large dimension.

On the Erdős distance problem
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, using the method of compression, we recover the lower bound for the Erdős unit distance problem and provide an alternative proof to the distinct distance conjecture. In particular, in $\mathbb{R}^k$ for all $k\geq 2$, we have \begin{align} \# \bigg\{||\vec{x_j}-\vec{x_t}||:~||\vec{x_j}-\vec{x_t}||=1,~1\leq t,j \leq n,~\vec{x_j},~\vec{x}_t \in \mathbb{R}^k\bigg\}\geq C\frac{\sqrt{k}}{2}n^{1+o(1)}\nonumber \end{align}for some $C>0$. We also show that \begin{align} \# \bigg\{d_j:d_j=||\vec{x_s}-\vec{y_t}||,~d_j\neq d_i,~1\leq s,t\leq n\bigg\}\geq D\frac{\sqrt{k}}{2}n^{\frac{2}{k}-o(1)}\nonumber \end{align}for some $D>0$. These lower bounds generalizes the lower bounds of the Erdős unit distance and the distinct distance problem to higher dimensions.

Solving the Joint Order Batching and Picker Routing Problem for Large Instances
In this work, we investigate the problem of order batching and picker routing in warehouse storage areas. These problems are known to be capital and labour intensive, and often contribute to a sizable fraction of warehouse operating costs. Here, we consider the case of online grocery shopping where orders may consist of dozens of items. We present the problem introduced and tackle the issue of solving the problem heuristically with proposed methods of solving that utilize batching and routing heuristics. Instances with up to 50 orders were solved heuristically in large simulated warehouse instances consisting of 8 to 30 aisles, with 1 to 4 blocks. The proposed methods were shown to have relatively short computation times as compared to optimally solving the problem in. In particular, we showed that a proposed method which utilizes an optimal solver for routing yielded poorer results than methods that utilize routing heuristics.

Basic quadratic identities on quantum minors
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper continues an earlier research of the authors on universal quadratic identities (QIs) on minors of quantum matrices. We demonstrate situations when the universal QIs are provided, in a sense, by the ones of four special types (Plucker, co-Plucker, Dodgson identities and quasi-commutation relations on flag and co-flag interval minors).

A combinatorial approach to central to theorem
H. Furstenberg introduced the notion of central set in terms of topological dynamics and established the central set theorem. The essence of central set theorem is that it is the simultaneous extension of van der Waerden's theorem and Hindman's theorem. Later V. Bergelson and N. Hindman established a connection between central sets and the algebra of Stone-cech compactification and proved that the central sets are the member of minimal idempotent ultrafilter of discrete semigroup. In some subsequent papers the central set theorem has been studied more deeply and some generalizations has been established. Those works use the techniques of Stone-Cech compactification of discrete semigroup. In this work we will prove central set theorem via combinatorial approach using the combinatorial characterization of central set established by N. Hindman, A. Malkeki and D. Strauss. Though we will use the combinatorial approach but the technique of the proof is similar to the proof of D. De, N. Hindman, D. Strauss.

Hopf algebras on planar trees and permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We endow the space of rooted planar trees with an structure of Hopf algebra. We prove that variations of such a structure lead to Hopf algebras on the spaces of labelled trees, $n$--trees, increasing planar trees and sorted trees. These structures are used to construct Hopf algebras on different types of permutations. In particular, we obtain new characterizations of the Hopf algebras of Malvenuto--Reutenauer and Loday--Ronco via planar rooted trees.

Excluded minors for the Klein Bottle I. Low connectivity case
Published • View Publication • BIB
Graphs that are critical (minimal excluded minors) for embeddability in surfaces are studied. In Part I we consider the structure of graphs with a 2-vertex-cut that are critical with respect to the Euler genus. A general theorem describing the building blocks is presented. These constituents, called hoppers and cascades, are classified for the case when Euler genus is small. As a consequence, the complete list of obstructions of connectivity 2 for embedding graphs into the Klein bottle is obtained. This is the first complete result about obstructions for embeddability of graphs in the Klein bottle, and the outcome is somewhat surprising in the sense that there are considerably fewer excluded minors than expected.

Excluded minors for the Klein Bottle II. Cascades
Published • View Publication • BIB
Graphs that are critical (minimal excluded minors) for embeddability in surfaces are studied. In Part I, it was shown that graphs that are critical for embeddings into surfaces of Euler genus $k$ or for embeddings into nonorientable surface of genus $k$ are built from 3-connected components, called hoppers and cascades. In Part II, all cascades for Euler genus 2 are classified. As a consequence, the complete list of obstructions of connectivity 2 for embedding graphs into the Klein bottle is obtained.
Module structure of the homology of right-angled Artin kernels
Published in Algebr. Geom. Topol. 22 (2022) 2775-2803 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we study the module structure of the homology of Artin kernels, i.e., kernels of non-resonant characters from right-angled Artin groups onto the integer numbers, the module structure being with respect to the ring $\mathbb{K}[t^{\pm 1}]$, where $\mathbb{K}$ is a field of characteristic zero. Papadima and Suciu determined some part of this structure by means of the flag complex of the graph of the Artin group. In this work, we provide more properties of the torsion part of this module, e.g., the dimension of each primary part and the maximal size of Jordan forms (if we interpret the torsion structure in terms of a linear map). These properties are stated in terms of homology properties of suitable filtrations of the flag complex and suitable double covers of an associated toric complex.
