Structural Parameterization for Graph Deletion Problems over Data Streams
Published • View Publication • BIB
The study of parameterized streaming complexity on graph problems was initiated by Fafianie et al. (MFCS'14) and Chitnis et al. (SODA'15 and SODA'16). Simply put, the main goal is to design streaming algorithms for parameterized problems such that $O\left(f(k)\log^{O(1)}n\right)$ space is enough, where $f$ is an arbitrary computable function depending only on the parameter $k$. However, in the past few years, very few positive results have been established. Most of the graph problems that do have streaming algorithms of the above nature are ones where localized checking is required, like Vertex Cover or Maximum Matching parameterized by the size $k$ of the solution we are seeking. Many important parameterized problems that form the backbone of traditional parameterized complexity are known to require $Ω(n)$ bits for any streaming algorithm; e.g., Feedback Vertex Set, Even/Odd Cycle Transversal, Triangle Deletion or the more general ${\cal F}$-Subgraph Deletion when parameterized by solution size $k$. Our main conceptual contribution is to overcome the obstacles to efficient parameterized streaming algorithms by utilizing the power of parameterization. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work in parameterized streaming complexity that considers structural parameters instead of the solution size as a parameter. We focus on the vertex cover size $K$ as the parameter for the parameterized graph deletion problems we consider. At the same time, most of the previous work in parameterized streaming complexity was restricted to the EA (edge arrival) or DEA (dynamic edge arrival) models. In this work, we consider the above mentioned graph deletion problems in the four most well-studied streaming models, i.e., the EA, DEA, VA (vertex arrival) and AL (adjacency list) models.

Combinatorially equivalent hyperplane arrangements
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the combinatorics of hyperplane arrangements over arbitrary fields. Specifically, we determine in which situation an arrangement and its reduction modulo a prime number have isomorphic lattices via the use of minimal strong $σ$-Gröbner bases. Moreover, we prove that the Terao's conjecture over finite fields implies the conjecture over the rationals.

Fractional cocoloring of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The cochromatic number $Z(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the fewest number of colors needed to color the vertices of $G$ so that each color class is a clique or an independent set. In a fractional cocoloring of $G$ a non-negative weight is assigned to each clique and independent set so that for each vertex $v$, the sum of the weights of all cliques and independent sets containing $v$ is at least one. The smallest total weight of such a fractional cocoloring of $G$ is the fractional cochromatic number $Z_f(G)$. In this paper we prove results for the fractional cochromatic number $Z_f(G)$ that parallel results for $Z(G)$ and the well studied fractional chromatic number $χ_f{(G)}$. For example $Z_f(G)=χ_f(G)$ when $G$ is triangle-free, except when the only nontrivial component of $G$ is a star. More generally, if $G$ contains no $k$-clique, then $Z_f(G)\le χ_f(G)\le Z_f(G)+R(k,k)$. Moreover, every graph $G$ with $χ_f(G)=m$ contains a subgraph $H$ with $Z_f(H)\ge (\frac 14 - o(1))\frac m{\log_2 m}$. We also prove that the maximum value of $Z_f(G)$ over all graphs $G$ of order $n$ is $Θ(n/\log n)$, and the maximum over all graphs embedded on an orientable surface of genus $g$ is $Θ(\sqrt g / \log g)$.

Binomial edge ideals of cographs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We determine the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of binomial edge ideals of complement reducible graphs (cographs). For cographs with $n$ vertices the maximum regularity grows as $2n/3$. We also bound the regularity by graph theoretic invariants and construct a family of counterexamples to a conjecture of Hibi and Matsuda.

Signed Hultman Numbers and Signed Generalized Commuting Probability in Finite Groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let G be a finite group. Let pi be a permutation from S{n}. We study the distribution of probabilities of equality a{1} a{2} ...a{n-1}a{n}=a{pi{1}}^{epsilon{1}} a{pi_{2}}^{epsilon{2}}...a{pi{n-1}}^{epsilon_{n-1}} a_{pi_{n}}^{epsilon{n}}, when pi varies over all the permutations in S{n}, and epsilon{i} varies over the set {+1, -1}. By the paper "Hultman Numbers and Generalized Commuting Probability in Finite Groups" (2017), The case where all epsilon{i} are +1 led to a close connection to Hultman numbers. In this paper we generalize the results, permitting epsilon{i} to be -1. We describe the spectrum of the probabilities of signed permutation equalities in a finite group G. This spectrum turns out to be closely related to the partition of 2^{n}*n! into a sum of the corresponding signed Hultman numbers.

Hypercontractivity for global functions and sharp thresholds
Published • View Publication • BIB
The classical hypercontractive inequality for the noise operator on the discrete cube plays a crucial role in many of the fundamental results in the Analysis of Boolean functions, such as the KKL (Kahn-Kalai-Linial) theorem, Friedgut's junta theorem and the invariance principle of Mossel, O'Donnell and Oleszkiewicz. In these results the cube is equipped with the uniform ($1/2$-biased) measure, but it is desirable, particularly for applications to the theory of sharp thresholds, to also obtain such results for general $p$-biased measures. However, simple examples show that when $p$ is small there is no hypercontractive inequality that is strong enough for such applications. In this paper, we establish an effective hypercontractivity inequality for general $p$ that applies to `global functions', i.e. functions that are not significantly affected by a restriction of a small set of coordinates. This class of functions appears naturally, e.g. in Bourgain's sharp threshold theorem, which states that such functions exhibit a sharp threshold. We demonstrate the power of our tool by strengthening Bourgain's theorem, thereby making progress on a conjecture of Kahn and Kalai. An additional application of our hypercontractivity theorem, is a $p$-biased analog of the seminal invariance principle of Mossel, O'Donnell, and Oleszkiewicz. In a companion paper, we give applications to the solution of two open problems in Extremal Combinatorics.

On discrete idempotent paths
Published in Words 2019, Sep 2019, Loughborough, United Kingdom • View Publication • BIB
The set of discrete lattice paths from (0, 0) to (n, n) with North and East steps (i.e. words w $\in$ { x, y } * such that |w| x = |w| y = n) has a canonical monoid structure inherited from the bijection with the set of join-continuous maps from the chain { 0, 1,. .. , n } to itself. We explicitly describe this monoid structure and, relying on a general characterization of idempotent join-continuous maps from a complete lattice to itself, we characterize idempotent paths as upper zigzag paths. We argue that these paths are counted by the odd Fibonacci numbers. Our method yields a geometric/combinatorial proof of counting results, due to Howie and to Laradji and Umar, for idempotents in monoids of monotone endomaps on finite chains.

Counting integer points of flow polytopes
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Baldoni--Vergne volume and Ehrhart polynomial formulas for flow polytopes are significant in at least two ways. On one hand, these formulas are in terms of Kostant partition functions, connecting flow polytopes to this classical vector partition function fundamental in representation theory. On the other hand the Ehrhart polynomials can be read off from the volume functions of flow polytopes. The latter is remarkable since the leading term of the Ehrhart polynomial of an integer polytope is its volume! Baldoni and Vergne proved these formulas via residues. To reveal the geometry of these formulas, the second author and Morales gave a fully geometric proof for the volume formula and a part generating function proof for the Ehrhart polynomial formula. The goal of the present paper is to provide a fully geometric proof for the Ehrhart polynomial formula of flow polytopes.

On Edge-Partitioning of Complete Geometric Graphs into Plane Trees
In response to a well-known open question ``Does every complete geometric graph on $2n\/$ vertices have a partition of its edge set into $n\/$ plane spanning trees?" we provide an affirmative answer when the complete geometry graph is in the regular wheel configuration. Also we present sufficient conditions for the complete geometric graph on $2n\/$ vertices to have a partition of its edge set into $n\/$ plane spanning trees (which are double stars, caterpillars or $ w\/$-caterpillars).
On Convex Graphs Having Plane Spanning Subgraph of Certain Type
Motivated by a result of [17], we determine necessary and sufficient conditions on $F\/$ with $|E(F)| \leq n-1\/$ for which $K_n - F\/$ admits a $g$-angulation. For $|E(F)| \geq n\/$, we investigate the possibility of placing $F\/$ in $K_n\/$ such that $K_n -F\/$ admits a $g$-angulation for certain families of graphs $F\/$.

Vertex properties of maximum scattered linear sets of $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n)$
Published in Discrete Math. 343 (2020) • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we investigate the geometric properties of the configuration consisting of a $k$-subspace $Γ$ and a canonical subgeometry $Σ$ in $\mathrm{PG}(n-1,q^n)$, with $Γ\capΣ=\emptyset$. The idea motivating is that such properties are reflected in the algebraic structure of the linear set which is projection of $Σ$ from the vertex $Γ$. In particular we deal with the maximum scattered linear sets of the line $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n)$ found by Lunardon and Polverino and recently generalized by Sheekey. Our aim is to characterize this family by means of the properties of the vertex of the projection as done by Csajbók and the first author of this paper for linear sets of pseudoregulus type. With reference to such properties, we construct new examples of scattered linear sets in $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^6)$, yielding also to new examples of MRD-codes in $\mathbb F_q^{6\times 6}$ with left idealiser isomorphic to $\mathbb F_{q^6}$.

An Asymmetric Random Rado Theorem: 1-statement
Published • View Publication • BIB
A classical result by Rado characterises the so-called partition-regular matrices $A$, i.e.\ those matrices $A$ for which any finite colouring of the positive integers yields a monochromatic solution to the equation $Ax=0$. We study the {\sl asymmetric} random Rado problem for the (binomial) random set $[n]_p$ in which one seeks to determine the threshold for the property that any $r$-colouring, $r \geq 2$, of the random set has a colour $i \in [r]$ admitting a solution for the matrical equation $A_i x = 0$, where $A_1,\ldots,A_r$ are predetermined partition-regular matrices pre-assigned to the colours involved. We prove a $1$-statement for the asymmetric random Rado property. In the symmetric setting our result retrieves the $1$-statement of the {\sl symmetric} random Rado theorem established in a combination of results by Rödl and Ruciński~\cite{RR97} and by Friedgut, Rödl and Schacht~\cite{FRS10}. We conjecture that our $1$-statement in fact unveils the threshold for the asymmetric random Rado property, yielding a counterpart to the so-called {\em Kohayakawa-Kreuter conjecture} concerning the threshold for the asymmetric random Ramsey problem in graphs. We deduce the aforementioned $1$-statement for the asymmetric random Rado property after establishing a broader result generalising the main theorem of Friedgut, Rödl and Schacht from~\cite{FRS10}. The latter then serves as a combinatorial framework through which $1$-statements for Ramsey-type problems in random sets and (hyper)graphs alike can be established in the asymmetric setting following a relatively short combinatorial examination of certain hypergraphs. To establish this framework we utilise a recent approach put forth by Mousset, Nenadov and Samotij~\cite{MNS18} for the Kohayakawa-Kreuter conjecture.

On the 4-color theorem for signed graphs
There are several ways to generalize graph coloring to signed graphs. Máčajová, Raspaud and Škoviera introduced one of them and conjectured that in this setting, for signed planar graphs four colors are always enough, generalising thereby The Four Color Theorem. We disprove the conjecture.

Nearly all cacti are edge intersection hypergraphs of 3-uniform hypergraphs
If ${\cal H}=(V,{\cal E})$ is a hypergraph, its edge intersection hypergraph $EI({\cal H})=(V,{\cal E}^{EI})$ has the edge set ${\cal E}^{EI}=\{e_1 \cap e_2 \ |\ e_1, e_2 \in {\cal E} \ \wedge \ e_1 \neq e_2 \ \wedge \ |e_1 \cap e_2 |\geq2\}$. Using the so-called clique-fusion, we show that nearly all cacti are edge intersection hypergraphs of 3-uniform hypergraphs. In the proof we make use of known characterizations of the trees and the cycles which are edge intersection hypergraphs of 3-uniform hypergraphs (see arXiv:1901.06292).

Smooth digraphs modulo primitive positive constructability and cyclic loop conditions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Finite smooth digraphs, that is, finite directed graphs without sources and sinks, can be partially ordered via pp-constructability. We give a complete description of this poset and, in particular, we prove that it is a distributive lattice. Moreover, we show that in order to separate two smooth digraphs in our poset it suffices to show that the polymorphism clone of one of the digraphs satisfies a prime cyclic loop condition that is not satisfied by the polymorphism clone of the other. Furthermore, we prove that the poset of cyclic loop ordered by their strength for clones is a distributive lattice, too.

Graphs of bounded depth-$2$ rank-brittleness
Published in J. Graph Theory, 96:361-378, March 2021 • View Publication • BIB
We characterize classes of graphs closed under taking vertex-minors and having no $P_n$ and no disjoint union of $n$ copies of the $1$-subdivision of $K_{1,n}$ for some $n$. Our characterization is described in terms of a tree of radius $2$ whose leaves are labelled by the vertices of a graph $G$, and the width is measured by the maximum possible cut-rank of a partition of $V(G)$ induced by splitting an internal node of the tree to make two components. The minimum width possible is called the depth-$2$ rank-brittleness of $G$. We prove that for all $n$, every graph with sufficiently large depth-$2$ rank-brittleness contains $P_n$ or disjoint union of $n$ copies of the $1$-subdivision of $K_{1,n}$ as a vertex-minor.
The rank of sparse random matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
We determine the rank of a random matrix over an arbitrary field with prescribed numbers of non-zero entries in each row and column. As an application we obtain a formula for the rate of low-density parity check codes. This formula vindicates a conjecture of Lelarge (2013). The proofs are based on coupling arguments and a novel random perturbation, applicable to any matrix, that diminishes the number of short linear relations.

Hypersimplicial subdivisions
Published in Sel. Math. New Ser. 28:1 (2022), article 4 • View Publication • BIB
Let $π:{\mathbb R}^n \to {\mathbb R}^d$ be any linear projection, let $A$ be the image of the standard basis. Motivated by Postnikov's study of postitive Grassmannians via plabic graphs and Galashin's connection of plabic graphs to slices of zonotopal tilings of 3-dimensional cyclic zonotopes, we study the poset of subdivisions induced by the restriction of $π$ to the $k$-th hypersimplex, for $k=1,\dots,n-1$. We show that: - For arbitrary $A$ and for $k\le d+1$, the corresponding fiber polytope $\mathcal F^{(k)}(A)$ is normally isomorphic to the Minkowski sum of the secondary polytopes of all subsets of $A$ of size $\max\{d+2,n-k+1\}$. - When $A={\mathbf P}_n$ is the vertex set of an $n$-gon, we answer the Baues question in the positive: the inclusion of the poset of $π$-coherent subdivisions into the poset of all $π$-induced subdivisions is a homotopy equivalence. - When $A=\mathbf{C}(n,d)$ is the vertex set of a cyclic $d$-polytope with $d$ odd and any $n \ge d+3$, there are non-lifting (and even more so, non-separated) $π$-induced subdivisions for $k=2$.
