An extremal problem for integer sparse recovery
Motivated by the problem of integer sparse recovery we study the following question. Let $A$ be an $m \times d$ integer matrix whose entries are in absolute value at most $k$. How large can be $d=d(m,k)$ if all $m \times m$ submatrices of $A$ are non-degenerate? We obtain new upper and lower bounds on $d$ and answer a special case of the problem by Brass, Moser and Pach on covering $m$-dimensional $k \times \cdots\times k$ grid by linear subspaces.

Upper bounds for bar visibility of subgraphs and n-vertex graphs
A $t$-bar visibility representation of a graph assigns each vertex up to $t$ horizontal bars in the plane so that two vertices are adjacent if and only if some bar for one vertex can see some bar for the other via an unobstructed vertical channel of positive width. The least $t$ such that $G$ has a $t$-bar visibility representation is the bar visibility number of $G$, denoted by $b(G)$. We show that if $H$ is a spanning subgraph of $G$, then $b(H)\le b(G)+1$. It follows that $b(G)\le \lceil n/6\rceil+1$ when $G$ is an $n$-vertex graph. This improves the upper bound obtained by Chang et al. (SIAM J. Discrete Math. 18 (2004) 462).

Partial associativity and rough approximate groups
Suppose that a binary operation $\circ$ on a finite set $X$ is injective in each variable separately and also associative. It is easy to prove that $(X,\circ)$ must be a group. In this paper we examine what happens if one knows only that a positive proportion of the triples $(x,y,z)\in X^3$ satisfy the equation $x\circ(y\circ z)=(x\circ y)\circ z$. Other results in additive combinatorics would lead one to expect that there must be an underlying "group-like" structure that is responsible for the large number of associative triples. We prove that this is indeed the case: there must be a proportional-sized subset of the multiplication table that approximately agrees with part of the multiplication table of a metric group. We also present an example that suggests that our result cannot be strengthened to yield a dense subset that agrees with part of the multiplication table of a group.

Perfect State Transfer on Weighted Graphs of the Johnson Scheme
Published • View Publication • BIB
We characterize perfect state transfer on real-weighted graphs of the Johnson scheme $\mathcal{J}(n,k)$. Given $\mathcal{J}(n,k)=\{A_1, A_2, \cdots, A_k\}$ and $A(X) = w_0A_0 + \cdots + w_m A_m$, we show, using classical number theory results, that $X$ has perfect state transfer at time $τ$ if and only if $n=2k$, $m\ge 2^{\lfloor{\log_2(k)} \rfloor}$, and there are integers $c_1, c_2, \cdots, c_m$ such that (i) $c_j$ is odd if and only if $j$ is a power of $2$, and (ii) for $r=1,2,\cdots,m$, \[w_r = \fracπτ \sum_{j=r}^m \frac{c_j}{\binom{2j}{j}} \binom{k-r}{j-r}.\] We then characterize perfect state transfer on unweighted graphs of $\mathcal{J}(n,k)$. In particular, we obtain a simple construction that generates all graphs of $\mathcal{J}(n,k)$ with perfect state transfer at time $π/2$.

Planar Point Sets Determine Many Pairwise Crossing Segments
We show that any set of $n$ points in general position in the plane determines $n^{1-o(1)}$ pairwise crossing segments. The best previously known lower bound, $Ω\left(\sqrt n\right)$, was proved more than 25 years ago by Aronov, Erd\H os, Goddard, Kleitman, Klugerman, Pach, and Schulman. Our proof is fully constructive, and extends to dense geometric graphs.

A $q$-analogue of Wilson's congruence
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let ${\mathcal C}_n$ be the set of all permutation cycles of length $n$ over $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. Let $${\mathfrak f}_n(q):=\sum_{σ\in{\mathcal C}_{n+1}}q^{{\mathrm maj}\,σ} $$ be a $q$-analogue of the factorial $n!$, where ${\mathrm maj}$ denotes the major index. We prove a $q$-analogue of Wilson's congruence $$ {\mathfrak f}_{n-1}(q)\equivμ(n)\pmod{Φ_n(q)}, $$ where $μ$ denotes the Möbius function and $Φ_n(q)$ is the $n$-th cyclotomic polynomial.

Generalized threshold arrangements
An arrangement of hyperplanes is a finite collection of hyperplanes in a real Euclidean space. To such a collection one associates the characteristic polynomial that encodes the combinatorics of intersections of the hyperplanes. Finding the characteristic polynomial of the Shi threshold and the Catalan threshold arrangements was an open problem in Stanley's list of problems in [1]. Seunghyun Seo solved both the problems by clever arguments using the finite field method in [3,4]. However, in his paper, he left open the problem of computing the characteristic polynomial of a broader class of threshold arrangements, the so-called "generalized threshold" arrangements whose defining set of hyperplanes is given by $x_i + x_j = -l,-l+1,...,m-1,m$ for $1 \le i < j \le n$ where $l,m \in \mathbb{N}$. In this paper, we present a method for computing the characteristic polynomial of this family of arrangements.

A corollary of Stanley's Hook Content Formula
We use the hook lengths of a partition to define two rectangular tableaux. We prove these tableaux have equal multisets of entries, first by elementary combinatorial arguments, and then using Stanley's Hook Content Formula and symmetric polynomials.

Classifications of $\ell$-Zero-Sumfree Sets
The set of all $\ell$-zero-sumfree subsets of $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$ is a simplicial complex denoted by $Δ_{n,\ell}$ We create an algorithm via defining a set of integer partitions we call $(n,\ell)$-congruent partitions in order to compute this complex for moderately-sized parameters $n$ and $\ell$. We also theoretically determine $Δ_{n,\ell}$ for several infinite families of parameters, and compute the intersection lattices and the characteristic polynomials of the corresponding coordinate subspace arrangements.

Determining Finite Connected Graphs Along the Quadratic Embedding Constants of Paths
Published in Electronic Journal of Graph Theory and Applications (EJGTA) Vol. 9 No. 2 (2021), 539 - 560 • View Publication • BIB
The QE constant of a finite connected graph $G$, denoted by $\mathrm{QEC}(G)$, is by definition the maximum of the quadratic function associated to the distance matrix on a certain sphere of codimension two. We prove that the QE constants of paths $P_n$ form a strictly increasing sequence converging to $-1/2$. Then we formulate the problem of determining all the graphs $G$ satisfying $\mathrm{QEC}(P_n)\le\mathrm{QEC}(G)<\mathrm{QEC}(P_{n+1})$. The answer is given for $n=2$ and $n=3$ by exploiting forbidden subgraphs for $\mathrm{QEC}(G)<-1/2$ and the explicit QE constants of star products of the complete graphs.

The LexCycle on $\overline{P_{2}\cup P_{3}}$-free Cocomparability Graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 22 no. 4, Graph Theory (December 28, 2020) dmtcs:5385 • View Publication • BIB
A graph $G$ is a cocomparability graph if there exists an acyclic transitive orientation of the edges of its complement graph $\overline{G}$. LBFS$^{+}$ is a variant of the generic Lexicographic Breadth First Search (LBFS), which uses a specific tie-breaking mechanism. Starting with some ordering $σ_{0}$ of $G$, let $\{σ_{i}\}_{i\geq 1}$ be the sequence of orderings such that $σ_{i}=$LBFS$^{+}(G, σ_{i-1})$. The LexCycle($G$) is defined as the maximum length of a cycle of vertex orderings of $G$ obtained via such a sequence of LBFS$^{+}$ sweeps. Dusart and Habib conjectured in 2017 that LexCycle($G$)=2 if $G$ is a cocomparability graph and proved it holds for interval graphs. In this paper, we show that LexCycle($G$)=2 if $G$ is a $\overline{P_{2}\cup P_{3}}$-free cocomparability graph, where a $\overline{P_{2}\cup P_{3}}$ is the graph whose complement is the disjoint union of $P_{2}$ and $P_{3}$. As corollaries, it's applicable for diamond-free cocomparability graphs, cocomparability graphs with girth at least 4, as well as interval graphs.

A Lower Bound for Relaxed Locally Decodable Codes
A locally decodable code (LDC) C:{0,1}^k -> {0,1}^n is an error correcting code wherein individual bits of the message can be recovered by only querying a few bits of a noisy codeword. LDCs found a myriad of applications both in theory and in practice, ranging from probabilistically checkable proofs to distributed storage. However, despite nearly two decades of extensive study, the best known constructions of O(1)-query LDCs have super-polynomial blocklength. The notion of relaxed LDCs is a natural relaxation of LDCs, which aims to bypass the foregoing barrier by requiring local decoding of nearly all individual message bits, yet allowing decoding failure (but not error) on the rest. State of the art constructions of O(1)-query relaxed LDCs achieve blocklength n = O(k^{1+ γ}) for an arbitrarily small constant γ. We prove a lower bound which shows that O(1)-query relaxed LDCs cannot achieve blocklength n = k^{1+ o(1)}. This resolves an open problem raised by Goldreich in 2004.

A unified proof of conjectures on cycle lengths in graphs
In this paper, we prove a tight minimum degree condition in general graphs for the existence of paths between two given endpoints, whose lengths form a long arithmetic progression with common difference one or two. This allows us to obtain a number of exact and optimal results on cycle lengths in graphs of given minimum degree, connectivity or chromatic number. More precisely, we prove the following statements by a unified approach. (1) Every graph $G$ with minimum degree at least $k+1$ contains cycles of all even lengths modulo $k$; in addition, if $G$ is 2-connected and non-bipartite, then it contains cycles of all lengths modulo $k$. (2) For all $k\geq 3$, every $k$-connected graph contains a cycle of length zero modulo $k$. (3) Every 3-connected non-bipartite graph with minimum degree at least $k+1$ contains $k$ cycles of consecutive lengths. (4) Every graph with chromatic number at least $k+2$ contains $k$ cycles of consecutive lengths. The first statement is a conjecture of Thomassen, the second is a conjecture of Dean, the third is a tight answer to a question of Bondy and Vince, and the fourth is a conjecture of Sudakov and Verstraëte. All of the above results are best possible.
The intersection of two vertex coloring problems
A hole is an induced cycle with at least four vertices. A hole is even if its number of vertices is even. Given a set L of graphs, a graph G is L-free if G does not contain any graph in L as an induced subgraph. Currently, the following two problems are unresolved: the complexity of coloring even hole-free graphs, and the complexity of coloring {4K1, C4}-free graphs. The intersection of these two problems is the problem of coloring {4K1, C4, C6}-free graphs. In this paper we present partial results on this problem.

Circularly squarefree words and unbordered conjugates: a new approach
Using a new approach based on automatic sequences, logic, and a decision procedure, we reprove some old theorems about circularly squarefree words and unbordered conjugates in a new and simpler way. Furthermore, we prove three new results about unbordered conjugates: we complete the classification, due to Harju and Nowotka, of binary words with the maximum number of unbordered conjugates; we prove that for every possible number, up to the maximum, there exists a word having that number of unbordered conjugates, and finally, we determine the expected number of unbordered conjugates in a random word.

Upper tails via high moments and entropic stability
Suppose that $X$ is a bounded-degree polynomial with nonnegative coefficients on the $p$-biased discrete hypercube. Our main result gives sharp estimates on the logarithmic upper tail probability of $X$ whenever an associated extremal problem satisfies a certain entropic stability property. We apply this result to solve two long-standing open problems in probabilistic combinatorics: the upper tail problem for the number of arithmetic progressions of a fixed length in the $p$-random subset of the integers and the upper tail problem for the number of cliques of a fixed size in the random graph $G_{n,p}$. We also make significant progress on the upper tail problem for the number of copies of a fixed regular graph $H$ in $G_{n,p}$. To accommodate readers who are interested in learning the basic method, we include a short, self-contained solution to the upper tail problem for the number of triangles in $G_{n,p}$ for all $p=p(n)$ satisfying $n^{-1}\log n\ll p \ll 1$.
On the neighborhood complex of $\vec{s}$-stable Kneser graphs
In 2002, A. Björner and M. de Longueville showed the neighborhood complex of the $2$-stable Kneser graph ${KG(n, k)}_{2-\textit{stab}}$ has the same homotopy type as the $(n-2k)$-sphere. A short time ago, an analogous result about the homotopy type of the neighborhood complex of almost $s$-stable Kneser graph has been announced by J. Osztényi. Combining this result with the famous Lovász's topological lower bound on the chromatic number of graphs has been yielded a new way for determining the chromatic number of these graphs which was determined a bit earlier by P. Chen. In this paper we present a common generalization of the mentioned results. We will define the $\vec{s}$-stable Kneser graph ${KG(n, k)}_{\vec{s}-\textit{stab}}$ as the induced subgraph of the Kneser graph $KG(n, k)$ on $\vec{s}$-stable vertices. And we prove, for given an integer vector $\vec{s}=(s_1,\ldots, s_k)$ and $n\geq\sum_{i=1}^{k-1}s_i+2$ where $s_i\geq2$ for $i\neq k$ and $s_k\in\{1,2\}$, the neighborhood complex of ${KG(n, k)}_{\vec{s}-\textit{stab}}$ is homotopy equivalent to the $\left(n-\sum_{i=1}^{k-1}s_i-2\right)$-sphere. In particular, this implies that $χ\left({KG(n, k)}_{\vec{s}-\textit{stab}}\right)= n-\sum_{i=1}^{k-1}s_i$ for the mentioned parameters. Moreover, as a simple corollary of the previous result, we will determine the chromatic number of 3-stable kneser graphs with at most one error.

Higher dimensional connectivity and minimal degree of random graphs with an eye towards minimal free resolutions
In this note we define and study graph invariants generalizing to higher dimension the maximum degree of a vertex and the vertex-connectivity (our $0$-dimensional cases). These are known to coincide almost surely in any regime for Erdoes-Renyi random graphs. We show the same in the one dimensional case for a middle density regime and show the easier inequality for all dimensions in the same regime. Our original motivation comes from the study of minimal free resolutions of Stanley-Reisner rings of clique complexes of graphs in commutative algebra, In that setting the higher dimensional vertex connectivities determine the lengths of the strands. Through our results we aim to replace (asymptotically) vertex connectivity by a simpler invariant.

A modification of Wythoff's Nim
We modify Wythoff's game by allowing an additional move, which we call a "split", and show how the $P$-positions are coded by the Tribonacci word. We analyze the table of letter positions of arbitrary $k$-bonacci words and find a $\mathrm{mex}$-rule that generates the Quadribonacci table.

Type $\tilde{C}$ Temperley-Lieb algebra quotients and Catalan combinatorics
We study some algebraic and combinatorial features of two algebras that arise as quotients of Temperley-Lieb algebras of type $\tilde{C}$, namely, the two-boundary Temperley-Lieb algebra and the symplectic blob algebra. We provide a monomial basis for both algebras. The elements of these bases are parameterized by certain subsets of fully commutative elements. We enumerate these elements according to their affine length.
