On the cop number of toroidal graphs
We show that the cop number of toroidal graphs is at most 3. This resolves a conjecture by Schroeder from 2001 which is implicit in a question by Andreae from 1986.

Extractors for small zero-fixing sources
A random variable $X$ is an $(n,k)$-zero-fixing source if for some subset $V\subseteq[n]$, $X$ is the uniform distribution on the strings $\{0,1\}^n$ that are zero on every coordinate outside of $V$. An $ε$-extractor for $(n,k)$-zero-fixing sources is a mapping $F:\{0,1\}^n\to\{0,1\}^m$, for some $m$, such that $F(X)$ is $ε$-close in statistical distance to the uniform distribution on $\{0,1\}^m$ for every $(n,k)$-zero-fixing source $X$. Zero-fixing sources were introduced by Cohen and Shinkar in [10] in connection with the previously studied extractors for bit-fixing sources. They constructed, for every $μ>0$, an efficiently computable extractor that extracts a positive fraction of entropy, i.e., $Ω(k)$ bits, from $(n,k)$-zero-fixing sources where $k\geq(\log\log n)^{2+μ}$. In this paper we present two different constructions of extractors for zero-fixing sources that are able to extract a positive fraction of entropy for $k$ essentially smaller than $\log\log n$. The first extractor works for $k\geq C\log\log\log n$, for some constant $C$. The second extractor extracts a positive fraction of entropy for $k\geq \log^{(i)}n$ for any fixed $i\in \mathbb{N}$, where $\log^{(i)}$ denotes $i$-times iterated logarithm. The fraction of extracted entropy decreases with $i$. The first extractor is a function computable in polynomial time in~$n$ (for $ε=o(1)$, but not too small); the second one is computable in polynomial time when $k\leqα\log\log n/\log\log\log n$, where $α$ is a positive constant. The subject studied in this paper is closely related to Ramsey theory. We use methods developed in Ramsey theory and our results can also be interpreted as a contribution to this field.

Graded Quivers, Generalized Dimer Models and Toric Geometry
Published • View Publication • BIB
The open string sector of the topological B-model model on CY $(m+2)$-folds is described by $m$-graded quivers with superpotentials. This correspondence extends to general $m$ the well known connection between CY $(m+2)$-folds and gauge theories on the worldvolume of D$(5-2m)$-branes for $m=0,\ldots, 3$. We introduce $m$-dimers, which fully encode the $m$-graded quivers and their superpotentials, in the case in which the CY $(m+2)$-folds are toric. Generalizing the well known $m=1,2$ cases, $m$-dimers significantly simplify the connection between geometry and $m$-graded quivers. A key result of this paper is the generalization of the concept of perfect matching, which plays a central role in this map, to arbitrary $m$. We also introduce a simplified algorithm for the computation of perfect matchings, which generalizes the Kasteleyn matrix approach to any $m$. We illustrate these new tools with a few infinite families of CY singularities.

Outliers in spectrum of sparse Wigner matrices
In this paper, we study the effect of sparsity on the appearance of outliers in the semi-circular law. Let $(W_n)_{n=1}^\infty$ be a sequence of random symmetric matrices such that each $W_n$ is $n\times n$ with i.i.d entries above and on the main diagonal equidistributed with the product $b_nξ$, where $ξ$ is a real centered uniformly bounded random variable of unit variance and $b_n$ is an independent Bernoulli random variable with a probability of success $p_n$. Assuming that $\lim\limits_{n\to\infty}n p_n=\infty$, we show that for the random sequence $(ρ_n)_{n=1}^\infty$ given by $$ρ_n:=θ_n+\frac{n p_n}{θ_n},\quad θ_n:=\sqrt{\max\big(\max\limits_{i\leq n}\|{\rm Row_i}(W_n)\|_2^2-np_n,n p_n\big)},$$ the ratio $\frac{\|W_n\|}{ρ_n}$ converges to one in probability. A non-centered counterpart of the theorem allows to obtain asymptotic expressions for eigenvalues of the Erdős--Renyi graphs, which were unknown in the regime $n p_n=Θ(\log n)$. In particular, denoting by $A_n$ the adjacency matrix of $\mathcal{G}(n,p_n)$ and by $λ_{|k|}(A_n)$ its $k$-th largest (by the absolute value) eigenvalue, under the assumptions $\lim\limits_{n\to\infty }n p_n=\infty$ and $\lim\limits_{n\to\infty}p_n=0$ we have: -(No non-trivial outliers) If $\liminf\frac{n p_n}{\log n}\geq\frac{1}{\log (4/e)}$ then for any fixed $k\geq2$, $\frac{|λ_{|k|}(A_n)|}{2\sqrt{n p_n}}$ converges to $1$ in probability. -(Outliers) If $\limsup\frac{n p_n}{\log n}<\frac{1}{\log (4/e)}$ then there is $\varepsilon>0$ such that for any $k\in\mathbb{N}$, we have $\lim\limits_{n\to\infty}\mathbb{P}\Big\{\frac{|λ_{|k|}(A_n)|}{2\sqrt{n p_n}}>1+\varepsilon\Big\}=1$. On a conceptual level, our result highlights similarities in appearance of outliers in spectrum of sparse matrices and the so-called BBP phase transition phenomenon in deformed Wigner matrices.

Interesting identities involving weighted representations of integers as sums of arbitrarily many squares
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we obtain formulas for the number of representations of positive integers as sums of arbitrarily many squares (and other polygonal numbers) with a certain natural weighting. The resulting weighted sums give Fourier coefficients of weight two quasimodular forms.

Nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials via integrable vertex models
Published • View Publication • BIB
Starting from an integrable rank-$n$ vertex model, we construct an explicit family of partition functions indexed by compositions $μ= (μ_1,\dots,μ_n)$. Using the Yang-Baxter algebra of the model and a certain rotation operation that acts on our partition functions, we show that they are eigenfunctions of the Cherednik-Dunkl operators $Y_i$ for all $1 \leq i \leq n$, and are thus equal to nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials $E_μ$. Our partition functions have the combinatorial interpretation of ensembles of coloured lattice paths which traverse a cylinder. Applying a simple bijection to such path ensembles, we show how to recover the well-known combinatorial formula for $E_μ$ due to Haglund-Haiman-Loehr.

Rank $n$ swapping algebra for Grassmannian
The rank $n$ swapping algebra is the Poisson algebra defined on the ordered pairs of points on a circle using the linking numbers, where a subspace of $(\mathbb{K}^n \times \mathbb{K}^{n*})^r/\operatorname{GL}(n,\mathbb{K})$ is its geometric mode. In this paper, we find an injective Poisson homomorphism from the Poisson algebra on Grassmannian $G_{n,r}$ arising from boundary measurement map to the rank $n$ swapping fraction algebra.

Some results on double triangle descendants of $K_5$
Double triangle expansion is an operation on $4$-regular graphs with at least one triangle which replaces a triangle with two triangles in a particular way. We study the class of graphs which can be obtained by repeated double triangle expansion beginning with the complete graph $K_5$. These are called double triangle descendants of $K_5$. We enumerate, with explicit rational generating functions, those double triangle descendants of $K_5$ with at most four more vertices than triangles. We also prove that the minimum number of triangles in any $K_5$ descendant is four. Double triangle descendants are an important class of graphs because of conjectured properties of their Feynman periods when they are viewed as scalar Feynman diagrams, and also because of conjectured properties of their $c_2$ invariants, an arithmetic graph invariant with quantum field theoretical applications.

Deza graphs with parameters (v,k,k-2,a)
Published in J Combin Des. (2020) 1-12 • View Publication • BIB
A Deza graph with parameters $(v,k,b,a)$ is a $k$-regular graph on $v$ vertices in which the number of common neighbors of two distinct vertices takes two values $a$ or $b$ ($a\leq b$) and both cases exist. In the previous papers Deza graphs with parameters $(v,k,b,a)$ where $k-b = 1$ were characterized. In the paper we characterise Deza graphs with $k-b = 2$.

Making multigraphs simple by a sequence of double edge swaps
We show that any loopy multigraph with a graphical degree sequence can be transformed into a simple graph by a finite sequence of double edge swaps with each swap involving at least one loop or multiple edge. Our result answers a question of Janson motivated by random graph theory, and it adds to the rich literature on reachability of double edge swaps with applications in Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling from the uniform distribution of graphs with prescribed degrees.

The $h$-edge tolerable diagnosability of balanced hypercubes
To measure the fault diagnosis capability of a multiprocessor system with faulty links, Zhu et al. [Theoret. Comput. Sci. 758 (2019) 1--8] introduced the $h$-edge tolerable diagnosability. This kind of diagnosability is a generalization of the concept of traditional diagnosability. In this paper, as complement to the results in [Theoret. Comput. Sci. 760 (2019) 1--14], we completely determine the $h$-edge tolerable diagnosability of balanced hypercubes $BH_n$ under the PMC model and the MM$^*$ model. Thus, the traditional diagnosability of $BH_n$ is also determined.

Latin cubes of even order with forbidden entries
We consider the problem of constructing Latin cubes subject to the condition that some symbols may not appear in certain cells. We prove that there is a constant $γ> 0$ such that if $n=2t$ and $A$ is a $3$-dimensional $n\times n\times n$ array where every cell contains at most $γn$ symbols, and every symbol occurs at most $γn$ times in every line of $A$, then $A$ is {\em avoidable}; that is, there is a Latin cube $L$ of order $n$ such that for every $1\leq i,j,k\leq n$, the symbol in position $(i,j,k)$ of $L$ does not appear in the corresponding cell of $A$.

The Varchenko Determinant for Apartments
Published • View Publication • BIB
Varchenko introduced a distance function on chambers of hyperplane arrangements that he called quantum bilinear form. That gave rise to a determinant indexed by chambers whose entry in position $(C,D)$ is the distance between $C$ and $D$: that is the Varchenko determinant. He showed that that determinant has a nice factorization. Later, Aguiar and Mahajan defined a generalization of the quantum bilinear form, and computed the Varchenko determinant given rise by that generalization for central hyperplane arrangements and their cones. This article takes inspiration from their proof strategy to compute the Varchenko determinant given rise by their distance function for apartment of hyperplane arrangements. Those latter are in fact realizable conditional oriented matroids.

On restricted colorings of $(d,s)$-edge colorable graphs
A cycle is $2$-colored if its edges are properly colored by two distinct colors. A $(d,s)$-edge colorable graph $G$ is a $d$-regular graph that admits a proper $d$-edge coloring in which every edge of $G$ is in at least $s-1$ $2$-colored $4$-cycles. Given a $(d,s)$-edge colorable graph $G$ and a list assigment $L$ of forbidden colors for the edges of $G$ satisfying certain sparsity conditions, we prove that there is a proper $d$-edge coloring of $G$ that avoids $L$, that is, a proper edge coloring $\varphi$ of $G$ such that $\varphi(e) \notin L(e)$ for every edge $e$ of $G$.

An Asymptotic Form of the Generating Function $\prod_{k=1}^\infty (1+x^k/k)$
It is shown that the sequence of rational numbers $r(k)$ generated by the ordinary generating function $\prod_{k=1}^\infty (1+x^k/k)$ converges to a limit $C > 0$. $C$ can be expressed as $C = \exp\Bigl(-\sum_{k = 2}^\infty \frac{(-1)^k}{k}\ ζ(k) \Bigr)$ where $ζ()$ denotes the Riemann zeta function.
A decorated tree approach to random permutations in substitution-closed classes
Published in Electron. J. Probab. 25 (2020), paper no. 67, 52 pp • View Publication • BIB
We establish a novel bijective encoding that represents permutations as forests of decorated (or enriched) trees. This allows us to prove local convergence of uniform random permutations from substitution-closed classes satisfying a criticality constraint. It also enables us to reprove and strengthen permuton limits for these classes in a new way, that uses a semi-local version of Aldous' skeleton decomposition for size-constrained Galton--Watson trees.

Binary patterns in the Prouhet-Thue-Morse sequence
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 23, no. 3, Automata, Logic and Semantics (August 30, 2021) dmtcs:5460 • View Publication • BIB
We show that, with the exception of the words $a^2ba^2$ and $b^2ab^2$, all (finite or infinite) binary patterns in the Prouhet-Thue-Morse sequence can actually be found in that sequence as segments (up to exchange of letters in the infinite case). This result was previously attributed to unpublished work by D. Guaiana and may also be derived from publications of A. Shur only available in Russian. We also identify the (finitely many) finite binary patterns that appear non trivially, in the sense that they are obtained by applying an endomorphism that does not map the set of all segments of the sequence into itself.

Some cyclic properties of $L_1$-graphs
A graph $G$ is called an $L_1$-graph if $d(u)+d(v)\ge|N(u)\cup N(v)\cup N(w)|-1$ for every triple of vertices $u,v,w$ where $u$ and $v$ are at distance 2 and $w\in N(u)\cap N(v)$. Asratian et al. (1996) proved that all finite connected $L_1$-graphs on at least three vertices such that $|N(u)\cap N(v)|\ge2$ for each pair of vertices $u,v$ at distance 2 are Hamiltonian, except for a simple family $\mathcal{K}$ of exceptions. We show that not all such graphs are pancyclic, but that any non-Hamiltonian cycle in such a graph can be extended to a larger cycle containing all vertices of the original cycle and at most two other vertices. We also prove a similar result for paths whose endpoints do not have any common neighbors.

A Linear Upper Bound on the Weisfeiler-Leman Dimension of Graphs of Bounded Genus
The Weisfeiler-Leman (WL) dimension of a graph is a measure for the inherent descriptive complexity of the graph. While originally derived from a combinatorial graph isomorphism test called the Weisfeiler-Leman algorithm, the WL dimension can also be characterised in terms of the number of variables that is required to describe the graph up to isomorphism in first-order logic with counting quantifiers. It is known that the WL dimension is upper-bounded for all graphs that exclude some fixed graph as a minor (Grohe, JACM 2012). However, the bounds that can be derived from this general result are astronomic. Only recently, it was proved that the WL dimension of planar graphs is at most 3 (Kiefer, Ponomarenko, and Schweitzer, LICS 2017). In this paper, we prove that the WL dimension of graphs embeddable in a surface of Euler genus $g$ is at most $4g+3$. For the WL dimension of graphs embeddable in an orientable surface of Euler genus $g$, our approach yields an upper bound of $2g+3$.

From Hall's Marriage Theorem to Boolean Satisfiability and Back
Motivated by the application of Hall's Marriage Theorem in various LP-rounding problems, we introduce a generalization of the classical marriage problem (CMP) that we call the Fractional Marriage Problem. We show that the Fractional Marriage Problem is NP-Complete by reduction from Boolean Satisfiability (SAT). We show that when we view the classical marriage problem (a.k.a. bipartite matching) as a sub-class of SAT we get a new class of polynomial-time satisfiable SAT instances that we call CMP-SAT, different from the classically known polynomial-time satisfiable SAT instances 2-SAT, Horn-SAT and XOR-SAT. We next turn to the problem of recognizing CMP-SAT instances, first using SAT embeddings, and then using their embeddings within the universe of Fractional Marriage Problems (FMPs). In the process we are led to another generalization of the CMP that we call the Symmetric Marriage Problem, which is polynomial time decidable and leads to a slight enlargement of the CMP-SAT class. We develop a framework for simplifying FMP problems to identify CMP instances that we call Fragment Logic. Finally we give a result that sheds light on how expressive the FMP need be to still be NP-Complete. The result gives a second NP-Complete reduction of the FMP, this time to Tripartite Matching. We conclude with a wide assortment of suggested additional problems.
