Hook-length formula and applications to alternating permutations
In this paper, we take interest in finding applications for a hook-length formula recently proved in (Morales Pak Panova 2016). This formula can be applied to give a non trivial relation between alternating permutations and weighted Dyck paths. First, we give an alternative proof for this result using continued fractions, and then we apply a similar reasoning to the more general case of $k$-alternating permutations.
Re-pairing brackets
Consider the following one-player game. Take a well-formed sequence of opening and closing brackets. As a move, the player can pair any opening bracket with any closing bracket to its right, erasing them. The goal is to re-pair (erase) the entire sequence, and the complexity of a strategy is measured by its width: the maximum number of nonempty segments of symbols (separated by blank space) seen during the play.
For various initial sequences, we prove upper and lower bounds on the minimum width sufficient for re-pairing. (In particular, the sequence associated with the complete binary tree of height $n$ admits a strategy of width sub-exponential in $\log n$.) Our two key contributions are (1) lower bounds on the width and (2) their application in automata theory: quasi-polynomial lower bounds on the translation from one-counter automata to Parikh-equivalent nondeterministic finite automata. The latter result answers a question by Atig et al. (2016).

Many families of combinatorial objects have a Hopf monoid structure. Aguiar and Ardila introduced the Hopf monoid of generalized permutahedra and showed that it contains various other notable combinatorial families as Hopf submonoids, including graphs, posets, and matroids. We introduce the Hopf monoid of orbit polytopes, which is generated by the generalized permutahedra that are invariant under the action of the symmetric group. We show that modulo normal equivalence, these polytopes are in bijection with integer compositions. We interpret the Hopf structure through this lens, and we show that applying the first Fock functor to this Hopf monoid gives a Hopf algebra of compositions. We describe the character group of the Hopf monoid of orbit polytopes in terms of noncommutative symmetric functions, and we give a combinatorial interpretation of the basic character and its polynomial invariant.
The phylogeny number in the aspect of triangles and diamonds of a graph
Given an acyclic digraph $D$, the competition graph of $D$, denoted by $C(D)$, is the simple graph having vertex set $V(D)$ and edge set $\{uv \mid (u, w), (v, w) \in A(D) \text{ for some } w \in V(D) \}$. The phylogeny graph of an acyclic digraph $D$, denoted by $P(D)$, is the graph with the vertex set $V(D)$ and the edge set $E(U(D)) \cup E(C(D))$ where $U(D)$ denotes the underlying graph of $D$. The notion of phylogeny graphs was introduced by Roberts and Sheng~\cite{roberts1997phylogeny} as a variant of competition graph. Moral graphs having arisen from studying Bayesian networks are the same as phylogeny graphs. In this paper, we integrate the existing theorems computing phylogeny numbers of connected graph with a small number of triangles into one proposition: for a graph $G$ containing at most two triangle, $ |E(G)|-|V(G)|-2t(G)+d(G)+1 \le p(G) \le |E(G)|-|V(G)|-t(G)+1 $ where $t(G)$ and $d(G)$ denote the number of triangles and the number of diamond in $G$, respectively. Then we show that these inequalities hold for graphs with many triangles. In the process of showing it, we derive a useful theorem which plays a key role in deducing various meaningful results including a theorem that answers a question given by Wu~{\it et al.}~\cite{Wu2019}.

Given a measurable set $A\subset \mathbb R^d$ we consider the "large-distance graph" $\mathcal{G}_A$, on the ground set $A$, in which each pair of points from $A$ whose distance is bigger than 2 forms an edge. We consider the problems of maximizing the $2d$-dimensional Lebesgue measure of the edge set as well as the $d$-dimensional Lebesgue measure of the vertex set of a large-distance graph in the $d$-dimensional Euclidean space that contains no copies of a complete graph on $k$ vertices. The former problem may be seen as a continuous analogue of Turán's classical graph theorem, and the latter as a graph-theoretic analogue of the classical isodiametric problem. Our main result yields an analogue of Mantel's theorem for large-distance graphs. Our approach employs an isodiametric inequality in an annulus, which might be of independent interest.

The largest minimum weights among quaternary Hermitian linear complementary dual codes are known for dimension $2$. In this paper, we give some conditions for the nonexistence of quaternary Hermitian linear complementary dual codes with large minimum weights. As an application, we completely determine the largest minimum weights for dimension $3$, by using a classification of some quaternary codes. In addition, for a positive integer $s$, a maximal entanglement entanglement-assisted quantum $[[21s+5,3,16s+3;21s+2]]$ codes is constructed for the first time from a quaternary Hermitian linear complementary dual $[26,3,19]$ code.
One-adhesive polymatroids
Adhesive polymatroids were defined by F. Matúš motivated by entropy functions. Two polymatroids are adhesive if they can be glued together along their joint part in a modular way; and are one-adhesive, if one of them has a single point outside their intersection. It is shown that two polymatroids are one-adhesive if and only if two closely related polymatroids have any extension. Using this result, adhesive polymatroid pairs on a five-element set are characterized.
On the Ramsey number of the Brauer configuration
We obtain a double exponential bound in Brauer's generalisation of van der Waerden's theorem, which concerns progressions with the same colour as their common difference. Such a result has been obtained independently and in much greater generality by Sanders. Using Gowers' local inverse theorem, our bound is quintuple exponential in the length of the progression. We refine this bound in the colour aspect for three-term progressions, and combine our arguments with an insight of Lefmann to obtain analogous bounds for the Ramsey numbers of certain nonlinear quadratic equations.

Suppose that $A$ is a $k \times d$ matrix of integers and write $\mathfrak{R}_A:\mathbb{N} \rightarrow \mathbb{N}\cup \{ \infty\}$ for the function taking $r$ to the largest $N$ such that there is an $r$-colouring $\mathcal{C}$ of $[N]$ with $\bigcup_{C \in \mathcal{C}}{C^d}\cap \ker A =\emptyset$. We show that if $\mathfrak{R}_A(r)<\infty$ for all $r \in \mathbb{N}$ then $\mathfrak{R}_A(r) \leq \exp (\exp(r^{O_{A}(1)}))$ for all $r \geq 2$.
When the kernel of $A$ consists only of Brauer configurations -- that is vectors of the form $(y,x,x+y,\dots,x+(d-2)y)$ -- the above has been proved by Chapman and Prendiville with good bounds on the $O_A(1)$ term.
Higher weight spectra of Veronese codes
We study q-ary linear codes C obtained from Veronese surfaces over finite fields. We show how one can find the higher weight spectra of these codes, or equivalently, the weight distribution of all extension codes of C over all field extensions of the field with q elements. Our methods will be a study of the Stanley-Reisner rings of a series of matroids associated to each code C
Sequences in Dihedral Groups with Distinct Partial Products
Given a subset $S$ of the non-identity elements of the dihedral group of order $2m$, is it possible to order the elements of $S$ so that the partial products are distinct? This is equivalent to the sequenceability of the group when $|S| = 2m-1$ and so it is known that the answer is yes in this case if and only if $m>4$. We show that the answer is yes when $|S| \leq 9$ and $m$ is an odd prime other than 3, when $|S| = 2m-2$ and $m$ is even or prime, and when $|S| = 2m-2$ for many instances of the problem when $m$ is odd and composite. We also consider the problem in the more general setting of arbitrary non-abelian groups and discuss connections between this work and the concept of strong sequenceability.

Given a $k$-vertex graph $H$ and an integer $n$, what are the $n$-vertex graphs with the maximum number of induced copies of $H$? This question is closely related to the inducibility problem introduced by Pippenger and Golumbic in 1975, which asks for the maximum possible fraction of $k$-vertex subsets of an $n$-vertex graph that induce a copy of $H$. Huang, Lee and the first author proved that for a random $k$-vertex graph $H$, almost surely the $n$-vertex graphs maximizing the number of induced copies of $H$ are the balanced iterated blow-ups of $H$. In this paper, we consider the case where the graph $H$ is obtained by deleting a small number of vertices from a random Cayley graph $\widetilde{H}$ of an abelian group. We prove that in this case, almost surely all $n$-vertex graphs maximizing the number of induced copies of $H$ are balanced iterated blow-ups of $\widetilde{H}$.
Semi-equivelar maps of Euler characteristics -2 with few vertices
We enumerate and classify all the semi equivelar maps on the surface of $ χ=-2 $ with up to 12 vertices. We also determine which of these are vertex-transitive and which are not.
On the Chromatic Polynomial and Counting DP-Colorings
The chromatic polynomial of a graph $G$, denoted $P(G,m)$, is equal to the number of proper $m$-colorings of $G$. The list color function of graph $G$, denoted $P_{\ell}(G,m)$, is a list analogue of the chromatic polynomial that has been studied since 1992, primarily through comparisons with the corresponding chromatic polynomial. DP-coloring (also called correspondence coloring) is a generalization of list coloring recently introduced by Dvořák and Postle. In this paper, we introduce a DP-coloring analogue of the chromatic polynomial called the DP color function, denoted $P_{DP}(G,m)$, and ask several fundamental open questions about it, making progress on some of them. Motivated by known results related to the list color function, we show that while the DP color function behaves similar to the list color function for some graphs, there are also some surprising differences. For example, Wang, Qian, and Yan recently showed that if $G$ is a connected graph with $l$ edges, then $P_{\ell}(G,m)=P(G,m)$ whenever $m > \frac{l-1}{\ln(1+ \sqrt{2})}$, but we will show that for any $g \geq 3$ there exists a graph, $G$, with girth $g$ such that $P_{DP}(G,m) < P(G,m)$ when $m$ is sufficiently large. We also study the asymptotics of $P(G,m) - P_{DP}(G,m)$ for a fixed graph $G$. We develop techniques to compute $P_{DP}(G,m)$ exactly and apply them to certain classes of graphs such as chordal graphs, unicyclic graphs, and cycles with a chord. Finally, we make progress towards showing that for any graph $G$, there is a $p$ such that $P_{DP}(G \vee K_p, m) = P(G \vee K_p , m)$ for large enough $m$.
p-Adic scaled space filling curve indices for high dimensional data
Space filling curves are widely used in Computer Science. In particular Hilbert curves and their generalisations to higher dimension are used as an indexing method because of their nice locality properties. This article generalises this concept to the systematic construction of p-adic versions of Hilbert curves based on affine transformations of the p-adic Gray code, and develops an efficient scaled indexing method for data taken from high-dimensional spaces based on these new curves, which with increasing dimension is shown to be less space consuming than the optimal standard static Hilbert curve index. A measure is derived which allows to assess the local sparsity of a data set, and is tested on some data.

Using the theory of electrical network, we first obtain a simple formula for the number of spanning trees of a complete bipartite graph containing a certain matching or a certain tree. Then we apply the effective resistance (i.e., resistance distance in graphs) to find a formula for the number of spanning trees in the nearly complete bipartite graph $G(m,n,p)=K_{m,n}-pK_2$ $(p\leq \min\{m,n\})$, which extends a recent result by Ye and Yan who obtained the effective resistances and the number of spanning trees in $G(n,n,p)$. As a corollary, we obtain the Kirchhoff index of $G(m,n,p)$ which extends a previous result by Shi and Chen.
On the size of $(K_t,\mathcal{T}_k)$-co-critical graphs
Given an integer $r\ge1$ and graphs $G, H_1, \ldots, H_r$, we write $G \rightarrow ({H}_1, \ldots, {H}_r)$ if every $r$-coloring of the edges of $G$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H_i$ in color $i$ for some $i\in\{1, \ldots, r\}$. A non-complete graph $G$ is $(H_1, \ldots, H_r)$-co-critical if $G \nrightarrow ({H}_1, \ldots, {H}_r)$, but $G+e\rightarrow ({H}_1, \ldots, {H}_r)$ for every edge $e$ in $\overline{G}$. In this paper, motivated by Hanson and Toft's conjecture [Edge-colored saturated graphs, J Graph Theory 11(1987), 191--196], we study the minimum number of edges over all $(K_t, \mathcal{T}_k)$-co-critical graphs on $n$ vertices, where $\mathcal{T}_k$ denotes the family of all trees on $k$ vertices. Following Day [Saturated graphs of prescribed minimum degree, Combin. Probab. Comput. 26 (2017), 201--207], we apply graph bootstrap percolation on a not necessarily $K_t$-saturated graph to prove that for all $t\ge4 $ and $k\ge \max\{6, t\}$, there exists a constant $c(t, k)$ such that, for all $n \ge (t-1)(k-1)+1$, if $G$ is a $(K_t, \mathcal{T}_k)$-co-critical graph on $n$ vertices, then $$ e(G)\ge \left(\frac{4t-9}{2}+\frac{1}{2}\left\lceil \frac{k}{2} \right\rceil\right)n-c(t, k).$$ Furthermore, this linear bound is asymptotically best possible when $t\in\{4,5\}$ and $k\ge6$. The method we develop in this paper may shed some light on attacking Hanson and Toft's conjecture.

We present families of tableaux which interpolate between the classical semi-standard Young tableaux and matching field tableaux. Algebraically, this corresponds to SAGBI bases of Plücker algebras. We show that each such family of tableaux leads to a toric ideal, that can be realized as initial of the Plücker ideal, hence a toric degeneration for the flag variety.
Distribution of determinant of sum of matrices
Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be an arbitrary finite field of order $q$. In this article, we study $\det S$ for certain types of subsets $S$ in the ring $M_2(\mathbb F_q)$ of $2\times 2$ matrices with entries in $\mathbb F_q$. For $i\in \mathbb{F}_q$, let $D_i$ be the subset of $M_2(\mathbb F_q)$ defined by
$ D_i := \{x\in M_2(\mathbb F_q): \det(x)=i\}.$ Then our results can be stated as follows. First of all, we show that when $E$ and $F$ are subsets of $D_i$ and $D_j$ for some $i, j\in \mathbb{F}_q^*$, respectively, we have $$\det(E+F)=\mathbb F_q,$$ whenever $|E||F|\ge {15}^2q^4$, and then provide a concrete construction to show that our result is sharp. Next, as an application of the first result, we investigate a distribution of the determinants generated by the sum set $(E\cap D_i) + (F\cap D_j),$ when $E, F$ are subsets of the product type, i.e., $U_1\times U_2\subseteq \mathbb F_q^2\times \mathbb F_q^2$ under the identification $ M_2(\mathbb F_q)=\mathbb F_q^2\times \mathbb F_q^2$. Lastly, as an extended version of the first result, we prove that if $E$ is a set in $D_i$ for $i\ne 0$ and $k$ is large enough, then we have \[\det(2kE):=\det(\underbrace{E + \dots + E}_{2k~terms})\supseteq \mathbb{F}_q^*,\] whenever the size of $E$ is close to $q^{\frac{3}{2}}$. Moreover, we show that, in general, the threshold $q^{\frac{3}{2}}$ is best possible. Our main method is based on the discrete Fourier analysis.
$e$-Positivity Results and Conjectures
In a 2016 ArXiv posting F. Bergeron listed a variety of symmetric functions $G[X;q]$ with the property that $G[X;1+q]$ is $e$-positive. A large subvariety of his examples could be explained by the conjecture that the Dyck path LLT polynomials exhibit the same phenomenon. In this paper we list the results of computer explorations which suggest that other examples exhibit the same phenomenon. We prove two of the resulting conjectures and propose algorithms that would prove several of our conjectures. In writing this paper we have learned that similar findings have been independently discovered by Per Alexandersson.
