Decomposing tournaments into paths
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider a generalisation of Kelly's conjecture which is due to Alspach, Mason, and Pullman from 1976. Kelly's conjecture states that every regular tournament has an edge decomposition into Hamilton cycles, and this was proved by Kühn and Osthus for large tournaments. The conjecture of Alspach, Mason, and Pullman asks for the minimum number of paths needed in a path decomposition of a general tournament $T$. There is a natural lower bound for this number in terms of the degree sequence of $T$ and it is conjectured that this bound is correct for tournaments of even order. Almost all cases of the conjecture are open and we prove many of them.

Answers to Some Questions about Explicit Sinkhorn Limits posed by Mel Nathanson
At the Jan. 2018 Joint Mathematics Meetings, Avi Wigderson gave a series of three fascinating lectures whose starting point was the Sinkhorn algorithm. One of the people in the audience was Mel Nathanson, and this lead him to ask some intriguing questions, some of which we answer in this note.

Triangulations with homogeneous zigzags
We investigate zigzags in triangulations of connected closed $2$-dimensional surfaces and show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between triangulations with homogeneous zigzags and closed $2$-cell embeddings of directed Eulerian graphs in surfaces. A triangulation is called $z$-knotted if it has a single zigzag. We construct a family of tree structured $z$-knotted spherical triangulations whose zigzags are homogeneous.

Linear algebraic techniques for weighted spanning tree enumeration
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications, Volume 582, 2019, Pages 391-402 • View Publication • BIB
The weighted spanning tree enumerator of a graph $G$ with weighted edges is the sum of the products of edge weights over all the spanning trees in $G$. In the special case that all of the edge weights equal $1$, the weighted spanning tree enumerator counts the number of spanning trees in $G$. The Weighted Matrix-Tree Theorem asserts that the weighted spanning tree enumerator can be calculated from the determinant of a reduced weighted Laplacian matrix of $G$. That determinant, however, is not always easy to compute. In this paper, we show how two well-known results from linear algebra, the Matrix Determinant Lemma and the method of Schur complements, can be used to elegantly compute the weighted spanning tree enumerator for several families of graphs.

A central idempotent in the endomorphism algebra of a finite lattice
We give a direct construction of a specific idempotent in the endomorphism algebra of a finite lattice $T$. This idempotent is associated with all possible sublattices of $T$ which are total orders.

Sarnak's Conjecture for nilsequences on arbitrary number fields and applications
We formulate the generalized Sarnak's Möbius disjointness conjecture for an arbitrary number field $K$, and prove a quantitative disjointness result between polynomial nilsequences $(Φ(g(n)Γ))_{n\in\mathbb{Z}^{D}}$ and aperiodic multiplicative functions on $\mathcal{O}_{K}$, the ring of integers of $K$. Here $D=[K\colon\mathbb{Q}]$, $X=G/Γ$ is a nilmanifold, $g\colon\mathbb{Z}^{D}\to G$ is a polynomial sequence, and $Φ\colon X\to \mathbb{C}$ is a Lipschitz function. The proof uses tools from multi-dimensional higher order Fourier analysis, multi-linear analysis, orbit properties on nilmanifold, and an orthogonality criterion of Kátai in $\mathcal{O}_{K}$. We also use variations of this result to derive applications in number theory and combinatorics: (1) we prove a structure theorem for multiplicative functions on $K$, saying that every bounded multiplicative function can be decomposed into the sum of an almost periodic function (the structural part) and a function with small Gowers uniformity norm of any degree (the uniform part); (2) we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the Gowers norms of a bounded multiplicative function in $\mathcal{O}_{K}$ to be zero; (3) we provide partition regularity results over $K$ for a large class of homogeneous equations in three variables. For example, for $a,b\in\mathbb{Z}\backslash\{0\}$, we show that for every partition of $\mathcal{O}_{K}$ into finitely many cells, where $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{a},\sqrt{b},\sqrt{a+b})$, there exist distinct and non-zero $x,y$ belonging to the same cell and $z\in\mathcal{O}_{K}$ such that $ax^{2}+by^{2}=z^{2}$.

Grassmann convexity and multiplicative Sturm theory, revisited
In this paper we settle a special case of the Grassmann convexity conjecture formulated earlier by B.and M.Shapiro. We present a conjectural formula for the maximal total number of real zeros of the consecutive Wronskians of an arbitrary fundamental solution to a disconjugate linear ordinary differential equation with real time. We show that this formula gives the lower bound for the required total number of real zeros for equations of an arbitrary order and, using our results on the Grassmann convexity, we prove that the aforementioned formula is correct for equations of orders $4$ and $5$.

Ordered graphs and large bi-cliques in intersection graphs of curves
An ordered graph $G_<$ is a graph with a total ordering $<$ on its vertex set. A monotone path of length $k$ is a sequence of vertices $v_1<v_2<\ldots<v_k$ such that $v_iv_{j}$ is an edge of $G_<$ if and only if $|j-i|=1$. A bi-clique of size $m$ is a complete bipartite graph whose vertex classes are of size $m$. We prove that for every positive integer $k$, there exists a constant $c_k>0$ such that every ordered graph on $n$ vertices that does not contain a monotone path of length $k$ as an induced subgraph has a vertex of degree at least $c_kn$, or its complement has a bi-clique of size at least $c_kn/\log n$. A similar result holds for ordered graphs containing no induced ordered subgraph isomorphic to a fixed ordered matching. As a consequence, we give a short combinatorial proof of the following theorem of Fox and Pach. There exists a constant $c>0$ such the intersection graph $G$ of any collection of $n$ $x$-monotone curves in the plane has a bi-clique of size at least $cn/\log n$ or its complement contains a bi-clique of size at least $cn$. (A curve is called $x$-monotone if every vertical line intersects it in at most one point.) We also prove that if $G$ has at most $\left(\frac14 -ε\right){n\choose 2}$ edges for some $ε>0$, then $\overline{G}$ contains a linear sized bi-clique. We show that this statement does not remain true if we replace $\frac14$ by any larger constants.

Simple and projective correspondence functors
A correspondence functor is a functor from the category of finite sets and correspondences to the category of $k$-modules, where $k$ is a commutative ring. We determine exactly which simple correspondence functors are projective. Moreover, we analyze the occurrence of such simple projective functors inside the correspondence functor $F$ associated with a finite lattice and we deduce a direct sum decomposition of $F$.

Polynomial bound for partition rank in terms of analytic rank
Let $G_1, \dots, G_k$ be vector spaces over a finite field $\mathbb{F} = \mathbb{F}_q$ with a non-trivial additive character $χ$. The analytic rank of a multilinear form $α\colon G_1 \times \dots \times G_k \to \mathbb{F}$ is defined as $\operatorname{arank}(α) = -\log_q \mathbb{E}_{x_1 \in G_1, \dots, x_k\in G_k} χ\big(α(x_1,\dots, x_k)\big)$. The partition rank $\operatorname{prank}(α)$ of $α$ is the smallest number of maps of partition rank 1 that add up to $α$, where a map is of partition rank 1 if it can be written as a product of two multilinear forms, depending on different coordinates. It is easy to see that $\operatorname{arank}(α) \leq O\Big(\operatorname{prank}(α)\Big)$ and it has been known that $\operatorname{prank}(α)$ can be bounded from above in terms of $\operatorname{arank}(α)$. In this paper, we improve the latter bound to polynomial, i.e. we show that there are quantities $C, D$ depending on $k$ only such that $\operatorname{prank}(α) \leq C (\operatorname{arank}(α)^D + 1)$. As a consequence, we prove a conjecture of Kazhdan and Ziegler. The same result was obtained independently and simultaneously by Janzer.

Dessins d'enfants, Brauer graph algebras and Galois invariants
In this paper, we associate a finite dimensional algebra, called a Brauer graph algebra, to every clean dessin d'enfant by constructing a quiver based on the monodromy of the dessin. We show that Galois conjugate dessins d'enfants give rise to derived equivalent Brauer graph algebras and that the stable Auslander-Reiten quiver and the dimension of the Brauer graph algebra are invariant under the induced action of the absolute Galois group.

Polynomial bound for the partition rank vs the analytic rank of tensors
Published in Discrete Analysis, 2020:7, 18pp • View Publication • BIB
A tensor defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}$ has low analytic rank if the distribution of its values differs significantly from the uniform distribution. An order $d$ tensor has partition rank 1 if it can be written as a product of two tensors of order less than $d$, and it has partition rank at most $k$ if it can be written as a sum of $k$ tensors of partition rank 1. In this paper, we prove that if the analytic rank of an order $d$ tensor is at most $r$, then its partition rank is at most $f(r,d,|\mathbb{F}|)$, where, for fixed $d$ and $\mathbb{F}$, $f$ is a polynomial in $r$. This is an improvement of a recent result of the author, where he obtained a tower-type bound. Prior to our work, the best known bound was an Ackermann-type function in $r$ and $d$, though it did not depend on $\mathbb{F}$. It follows from our results that a biased polynomial has low rank; there too we obtain a polynomial dependence improving the previously known Ackermann-type bound. A similar polynomial bound for the partition rank was obtained independently and simultaneously by Milićević.

On a congruence involving $q$-Catalan numbers
Based on a $q$-congruence of the author and Petrov, we set up a $q$-analogue of Sun--Tauraso's congruence for sums of Catalan numbers, which extends a $q$-congruence due to Tauraso.
Vertex-monochromatic connectivity of strong digraphs
A vertex coloring of a strong digraph $D$ is a \emph{strong vertex-monochromatic connection coloring (SVMC-coloring)} if for every pair $u, v$ of vertices in $D$ there exists an $(u,v)$-path having all its internal vertices of the same color. Let $smc_v(D)$ denote the maximum number of colors used in an SVMC-coloring of a digraph $D$. In this paper we determine the value of $smc_v(D)$, whenever $D$ is the line digraph of a digraph. Also, if $T$ is a tournament, we give conditions to find the exact value of $smc_v(T)$.

Boson-fermion correspondence for Hall-Littlewood polynomials revisited
Published in Journal of Mathematical Sciences, New York, Vol. 247, No. 6, 2020; p.926 • Search Publication
We connect twisted vertex operator presentation of Hall-Littlewood polynomials with the action of charged free fermions, describe a boson-fermion correspondence that relates twisted vertex operators with classical Heisenberg algebra. We also show that the elements of the orthogonal to Schur functions basis of the one-parameter deformation of the ring of symmetric functions $Λ[t]$ are $τ$-functions of KP hierarchy.
Motivic Chern classes of Schubert cells, Hecke algebras, and applications to Casselman's problem
Published in Ann. Sci. Éc. Norm. Supér. (4) 57 (2024), no. 1, 87-141 • View Publication • BIB
Motivic Chern classes are elements in the K-theory of an algebraic variety $X$, depending on an extra parameter $y$. They are determined by functoriality and a normalization property for smooth $X$. In this paper we calculate the motivic Chern classes of Schubert cells in the (equivariant) K-theory of flag manifolds $G/B$. We show that the motivic class of a Schubert cell is determined recursively by the Demazure-Lusztig operators in the Hecke algebra of the Weyl group of $G$, starting from the class of a point. The resulting classes are conjectured to satisfy a positivity property. We use the recursions to give a new proof that they are equivalent to certain K-theoretic stable envelopes recently defined by Okounkov and collaborators, thus recovering results of Fehér, Rimányi and Weber. The Hecke algebra action on the K-theory of the Langlands dual flag manifold matches the Hecke action on the Iwahori invariants of the principal series representation associated to an unramified character for a group over a nonarchimedean local field. This gives a correspondence identifying the duals of the motivic Chern classes to the standard basis in the Iwahori invariants, and the fixed point basis to Casselman's basis. We apply this correspondence to prove two conjectures of Bump, Nakasuji and Naruse concerning factorizations and holomorphy properties of the coefficients in the transition matrix between the standard and the Casselman's basis.

Weighted games of best choice
The game of best choice (also known as the secretary problem) is a model for sequential decision making with a long history and many variations. The classical setup assumes that the sequence of candidate rankings are uniformly distributed. Given a statistic on the symmetric group, one can instead weight each permutation according to an exponential function in the statistic. We play the game of best choice on the Ewens and Mallows distributions that are obtained in this way from the number of left-to-right maxima and number of inversions in the permutation, respectively. For each of these, we give the optimal strategy and probability of winning. Moreover, we introduce a general class of permutation statistics that always produces games of best choice whose optimal strategies are positional, which simplifies their analysis considerably.

The optimal packing of eight points in the real projective plane
How can we arrange $n$ lines through the origin in three-dimensional Euclidean space in a way that maximizes the minimum interior angle between pairs of lines? Conway, Hardin and Sloane (1996) produced line packings for $n \leq 55$ that they conjectured to be within numerical precision of optimal in this sense, but until now only the cases $n \leq 7$ have been solved. In this paper, we resolve the case $n = 8$. Drawing inspiration from recent work on the Tammes problem, we enumerate contact graph candidates for an optimal configuration and eliminate those that violate various combinatorial and geometric necessary conditions. The contact graph of the putatively optimal numerical packing of Conway, Hardin and Sloane is the only graph that survives, and we recover from this graph an exact expression for the minimum distance of eight optimally packed points in the real projective plane.

On Ramsey numbers of hedgehogs
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 29 (2020) 101-112 • View Publication • BIB
The hedgehog $H_t$ is a 3-uniform hypergraph on vertices $1,\dots,t+\binom{t}{2}$ such that, for any pair $(i,j)$ with $1\le i<j\le t$, there exists a unique vertex $k>t$ such that $\{i,j,k\}$ is an edge. Conlon, Fox, and Rödl proved that the two-color Ramsey number of the hedgehog grows polynomially in the number of its vertices, while the four-color Ramsey number grows exponentially in the number of its vertices. They asked whether the two-color Ramsey number of the hedgehog $H_t$ is nearly linear in the number of its vertices. We answer this question affirmatively, proving that $r(H_t) = O(t^2\ln t)$.
