Covering graphs by monochromatic trees and Helly-type results for hypergraphs
How many monochromatic paths, cycles or general trees does one need to cover all vertices of a given $r$-edge-coloured graph $G$? These problems were introduced in the 1960s and were intensively studied by various researchers over the last 50 years. In this paper, we establish a connection between this problem and the following natural Helly-type question in hypergraphs. Roughly speaking, this question asks for the maximum number of vertices needed to cover all the edges of a hypergraph $H$ if it is known that any collection of a few edges of $H$ has a small cover. We obtain quite accurate bounds for the hypergraph problem and use them to give some unexpected answers to several questions about covering graphs by monochromatic trees raised and studied by Bal and DeBiasio, Kohayakawa, Mota and Schacht, Lang and Lo, and Girão, Letzter and Sahasrabudhe.

Graver Bases via Quantum Annealing with Application to Non-Linear Integer Programs
We propose a novel hybrid quantum-classical approach to calculate Graver bases, which have the potential to solve a variety of hard linear and non-linear integer programs, as they form a test set (optimality certificate) with very appealing properties. The calculation of Graver bases is exponentially hard (in general) on classical computers, so they not used for solving practical problems on commercial solvers. With a quantum annealer, however, it may be a viable approach to use them. We test two hybrid quantum-classical algorithms (on D-Wave)--one for computing Graver basis and a second for optimizing non-linear integer programs that utilize Graver bases--to understand the strengths and limitations of the practical quantum annealers available today. Our experiments suggest that with a modest increase in coupler precision--along with near-term improvements in the number of qubits and connectivity (density of hardware graph) that are expected--the ability to outperform classical best-in-class algorithms is within reach, with respect to non-linear integer optimization.

How to count the number of zeros that a polynomial has on the unit circle?
Published in Journal of Computational and Applied Mathematics, Volume 384, 1 March 2021, 113169 (Available online 27 August 2020) • View Publication • BIB
The classical problem of counting the number of real zeros of a real polynomial was solved a long time ago by Sturm. The analogous problem of counting the number of zeros that a polynomial has on the unit circle is, however, still an open problem. In this paper, we show that the second problem can be reduced to the first one through the use of a suitable pair of Möbius transformations - often called Cayley transformations - that have the property of mapping the unit circle onto the real line and vice versa. Although the method applies to arbitrary complex polynomials, we discuss in detail several classes of polynomials with symmetric zeros as, for instance, the cases of self-conjugate, self-adjoint, self-inversive, self-reciprocal and skew-reciprocal polynomials. Finally, an application of this method to Salem polynomials and to polynomials with small Mahler measure is also discussed.

The least H-eigenvalue of signless Laplacian of non-odd-bipartite hypergraphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics, Volume 343, Issue 9, 2020, 111987 • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a connected non-odd-bipartite hypergraph with even uniformity. The least H-eigenvalue of the signless Laplacian tensor of $G$ is simply called the least eigenvalue of $G$ and the corresponding H-eigenvectors are called the first eigenvectors of $G$. In this paper we give some numerical and structural properties about the first eigenvectors of $G$ which contains an odd-bipartite branch, and investigate how the least eigenvalue of $G$ changes when an odd-bipartite branch attached at one vertex is relocated to another vertex. We characterize the hypergraph(s) whose least eigenvalue attains the minimum among a certain class of hypergraphs which contain a fixed non-odd-bipartite connected hypergraph. Finally we present some upper bounds of the least eigenvalue and prove that zero is the least limit point of the least eigenvalues of connected non-odd-bipartite hypergraphs.

List edge coloring of outer-1-planar graphs
A graph is outer-1-planar if it can be drawn in the plane so that all vertices are on the outer face and each edge is crossed at most once. It is known that the list edge chromatic number $χ'_l(G)$ of any outer-1-planar graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ(G)\geq 5$ is exactly its maximum degree. In this paper, we prove $χ'_l(G)=Δ(G)$ for outer-1-planar graphs $G$ with $Δ(G)=4$ and with the crossing distance being at least 3.

On Conflict Free DNA Codes
Published • View Publication • BIB
DNA storage has emerged as an important area of research. The reliability of DNA storage system depends on designing the DNA strings (called DNA codes) that are sufficiently dissimilar. In this work, we introduce DNA codes that satisfy a special constraint. Each codeword of the DNA code has a specific property that any two consecutive sub-strings of the DNA codeword will not be the same (a generalization of homo-polymers constraint). This is in addition to the usual constraints such as Hamming, reverse, reverse-complement and $GC$-content. We believe that the new constraint will help further in reducing the errors during reading and writing data into the synthetic DNA strings. We also present a construction (based on a variant of stochastic local search algorithm) to calculate the size of the DNA codes with all the above constraints, which improves the lower bounds from the existing literature, for some specific cases. Moreover, a recursive isometric map between binary vectors and DNA strings is proposed. Using the map and the well known binary codes we obtain few classes of DNA codes with all the constraints including the property that the constructed DNA codewords are free from the hairpin-like secondary structures.

Optimal BIBD-extended designs
Balanced incomplete block designs (BIBDs) are a class of designs with v treatments and b blocks of size k that are optimal with regards to a wide range of optimality criteria, but it is not clear which designs to choose for combinations of v, b and k when BIBDs do not exist. In 1992, Cheng showed that for sufficiently large b, the designs which are optimal with respect to commonly used criteria (including the A- and D- criteria) must be found among (M.S)-optimal designs. In particular, this result confirmed the conjecture of John and Mitchell in 1977 on the optimality of regular graph designs (RGDs) in the case of large numbers of blocks. We investigate the effect of extending known optimal binary designs by repeatedly adding the blocks of a BIBD and find boundaries for the number of block so that these BIBD-extended designs are optimal. In particular, we will study the designs for k=2 and b=v-1 and b=v: in these cases the A- and D-optimal designs are not the same but we show that this changes after adding blocks of a BIBD and the same design becomes A- and D-optimal amongst the collection of extended designs. Finally, we characterise those RGDs that give rise to A- and D-optimal extended designs and extend a result on the D-optimality of the a group-divisible design to A- and D-optimality amongst BIBD-extended designs.

A hierarchy of dismantlings in Graphs
Given a finite undirected graph $X$, a vertex is $0$-dismantlable if its open neighbourhood is a cone and $X$ is $0$-dismantlable if it is reducible to a single vertex by successive deletions of $0$-dismantlable vertices. By an iterative process, a vertex is $(k+1)$-dismantlable if its open neighbourhood is $k$-dismantlable and a graph is $k$-dismantlable if it is reducible to a single vertex by successive deletions of $k$-dismantlable vertices. We introduce a graph family, the cubion graphs, in order to prove that $k$-dismantlabilities give a strict hierarchy in the class of graphs whose clique complex is non-evasive. We point out how these higher dismantlabilities are related to the derivability of graphs defined by Mazurkievicz and we get a new characterization of the class of closed graphs he defined. By generalising the notion of vertex transitivity, we consider the issue of higher dismantlabilities in link with the evasiveness conjecture.

On intriguing sets of the Penttila-Williford association scheme
We investigate intriguing sets of an association scheme introduced by Penttila and Williford (2011) that was the basis for their construction of primitive cometric association schemes that are not $P$-polynomial nor the dual of a $P$-polynomial scheme. In particular, we give examples and characterisation results for the four types of intriguing sets that arise in this scheme.

Lorentzian polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the class of Lorentzian polynomials. The class contains homogeneous stable polynomials as well as volume polynomials of convex bodies and projective varieties. We prove that the Hessian of a nonzero Lorentzian polynomial has exactly one positive eigenvalue at any point on the positive orthant. This property can be seen as an analog of Hodge--Riemann relations for Lorentzian polynomials. Lorentzian polynomials are intimately connected to matroid theory and negative dependence properties. We show that matroids, and more generally M-convex sets, are characterized by the Lorentzian property, and develop a theory around Lorentzian polynomials. In particular, we provide a large class of linear operators that preserve the Lorentzian property and prove that Lorentzian measures enjoy several negative dependence properties. We also prove that the class of tropicalized Lorentzian polynomials coincides with the class of M-convex functions in the sense of discrete convex analysis. The tropical connection is used to produce Lorentzian polynomials from M-convex functions. We give two applications of the general theory. First, we prove that the homogenized multivariate Tutte polynomial of a matroid is Lorentzian whenever the parameter q satisfies $0 < q \le 1$. Consequences are proofs of the strongest Mason's conjecture from 1972 and negative dependence properties of the random cluster model model in statistical physics. Second, we prove that the multivariate characteristic polynomial of an M-matrix is Lorentzian. This refines a result of Holtz who proved that the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of an M-matrix form an ultra log-concave sequence.

An Eisenbud-Goto-type Upper Bound for the Castelnuovo-Mumford Regularity of Fake Weighted Projective Spaces
We will give an upper bound for the $k$-normality of very ample lattice simplices, and then give an Eisenbud-Goto-type bound for some special classes of projective toric varieties.

A Sundaram type bijection for $\mathrm{SO}(2k+1)$: vacillating tableaux and pairs consisting of a standard Young tableau and an orthogonal Littlewood-Richardson tableau
We present a bijection between vacillating tableaux and pairs consisting of a standard Young tableau and an orthogonal Littlewood-Richardson tableau for the special orthogonal group $\mathrm{SO}(2k+1)$. This bijection is motivated by the direct-sum-decomposition of the $r$th tensor power of the defining representation of $\mathrm{SO}(2k+1)$. To formulate it, we use Kwon's orthogonal Littlewood-Richardson tableaux and introduce new alternative tableaux they are in bijection with. Moreover we use a suitably defined descent set for vacillating tableaux to determine the quasi-symmetric expansion of the Frobenius characters of the isotypic components.

Congruences on sums of $q$-binomial coefficients
Published in Adv. in Appl. Math. 116 (2020), 102003 • View Publication • BIB
We establish a $q$-analogue of Sun--Zhao's congruence on harmonic sums. Based on this $q$-congruence and a $q$-series identity, we prove a congruence conjecture on sums of central $q$-binomial coefficients, which was recently proposed by Guo. We also deduce a $q$-analogue of a congruence due to Apagodu and Zeilberger from Guo's $q$-congruence.
All those EPPA classes (Strengthenings of the Herwig-Lascar theorem)
In this paper we prove a general theorem showing the extension property for partial automorphisms (EPPA, also called the Hrushovski property) for classes of structures containing relations and unary functions, optionally equipped with a permutation group of the language. The proof is elementary, combinatorial and fully self-contained. Our result is a common strengthening of the Herwig-Lascar theorem on EPPA for relational classes with forbidden homomorphisms, the Hodkinson-Otto theorem on EPPA for relational free amalgamation classes, its strengthening for unary functions by Evans, Hubička and Nešetřil and their coherent variants by Siniora and Solecki. We also prove an EPPA analogue of the main results of J. Hubička and J. Nešetřil: All those Ramsey classes (Ramsey classes with closures and forbidden homomorphisms), thereby establishing a common framework for proving EPPA and the Ramsey property. Our results have numerous applications, we include a solution of a problem related to a class constructed by the Hrushovski predimension construction.

The minimal cone of an algebraic Laurent series
We study the algebraic closure of $\mathbb K(\!(x)\!)$, the field of power series in several indeterminates over a field $\mathbb K$. In characteristic zero we show that the elements algebraic over $\mathbb K(\!(x)\!)$ can be expressed as Puiseux series such that the convex hull of its support is essentially a polyhedral rational cone, strengthening the known results. In positive characteristic we construct algebraic closed fields containing the field of power series and we give examples showing that the results proved in characteristic zero are longer valid in positive characteristic.

Limit theory of isolated and extreme points in hyperbolic random geometric graphs
Published in Electron. J. Probab., Volume 25 (2020), paper no. 141 • View Publication • BIB
Given $α\in (0, \infty)$ and $r \in (0, \infty)$, let ${\cal D}_{r, α}$ be the disc of radius $r$ in the hyperbolic plane having curvature $-α^2$. Consider the Poisson point process having uniform intensity density on ${\cal D}_{R, α}$, with $R = 2 \log(n/ ν),$ $n \in \mathbb{N}$, and $ν< n$ a fixed constant. The points are projected onto ${\cal D}_{R, 1}$, preserving polar coordinates, yielding a Poisson point process ${\cal P}_{α, n}$ on ${\cal D}_{R, 1}$. The hyperbolic geometric graph ${\cal G}_{α, n}$ on ${\cal P}_{α, n}$ puts an edge between pairs of points of ${\cal P}_{α, n}$ which are distant at most $R$. This model has been used to express fundamental features of complex networks in terms of an underlying hyperbolic geometry. For $α\in (1/2, \infty)$ we establish expectation and variance asymptotics as well as asymptotic normality for the number of isolated and extreme points in ${\cal G}_{α, n}$ as $n \to \infty$. The limit theory and renormalization for the number of isolated points are highly sensitive on the curvature parameter. In particular, for $α\in (1/2, 1)$, the variance is super-linear, for $α= 1$ the variance is linear with a logarithmic correction, whereas for $α\in (1, \infty)$ the variance is linear. The central limit theorem fails for $α\in (1/2, 1)$ but it holds for $α\in (1, \infty)$.

On the number of pancake stacks requiring four flips to be sorted
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 21 no. 2, Permutation Patters 2018 (November 4, 2019) dmtcs:5214 • View Publication • BIB
Using existing classification results for the 7- and 8-cycles in the pancake graph, we determine the number of permutations that require 4 pancake flips (prefix reversals) to be sorted. A similar characterization of the 8-cycles in the burnt pancake graph, due to the authors, is used to derive a formula for the number of signed permutations requiring 4 (burnt) pancake flips to be sorted. We furthermore provide an analogous characterization of the 9-cycles in the burnt pancake graph. Finally we present numerical evidence that polynomial formulae exist giving the number of signed permutations that require $k$ flips to be sorted, with $5\leq k\leq9$.
