On a $q$-deformation of modular forms
Published in J. Math. Anal. Appl. 475:2 (2019), 1636--1646 • View Publication • BIB
There are many instances known when the Fourier coefficients of modular forms are congruent to partial sums of hypergeometric series. In our previous work arXiv:1803.01830, such partial sums are related to the radial asymptotics of infinite $q$-hypergeometric sums at roots of unity. Here we combine the two features to construct a hypergeometric $q$-deformation of two CM modular forms of weight 3 and discuss the corresponding $q$-congruences.

Non-isomorphic Signatures on Some Generalised Petersen Graph
In this paper we find the number of different signatures of $P(3,1), P(5,1)$ and $P(7,1)$ upto switching isomorphism, where $P(n, k)$ denotes the generalised Petersen graph, $2k < n$. We also count the number of non-isomorphic signatures on $P(2n+1,1)$ of size two for all $n \geq 1$, and we conjecture that any signature of $P(2n+1,1)$, upto switching, is of size at most $n+1$.

The complete set of minimal simple graphs that support unsatisfiable 2-CNFs
A propositional logic sentence in conjunctive normal form that has clauses of length two (a 2-CNF) can be associated with a multigraph in which the vertices correspond to the variables and edges to clauses. We first show that every such sentence that has been reduced, that is, which is unchanged under application of certain tautologies, is equisatisfiable to a 2-CNF whose associated multigraph is, in fact, a simple graph. Our main result is a complete characterization of graphs that can support unsatisfiable 2-CNF sentences. We show that a simple graph can support an unsatisfiable reduced 2-CNF sentence if and only if it contains any one of four specific small graphs as a topological minor. Equivalently, all reduced 2-CNF sentences supported on a given simple graph are satisfiable if and only if all subdivisions of those four graphs are forbidden as subgraphs of of the original graph. We conclude with a discussion of why the Robertson-Seymour graph minor theorem does not apply in our approach.

On edge-primitive and 2-arc-transitive graphs
A graph is edge-primitive if its automorphism group acts primitively on the edge set. In this short paper, we prove that a finite 2-arc-transitive edge-primitive graph has almost simple automorphism group if it is neither a cycle nor a complete bipartite graph. We also present two examples of such graphs, which are 3-arc-transitive and have faithful vertex-stabilizers.

Degree Bounded Bottleneck Spanning Trees in Three Dimensions
The geometric $δ$-minimum spanning tree problem ($δ$-MST) is the problem of finding a minimum spanning tree for a set of points in a normed vector space, such that no vertex in the tree has a degree which exceeds $δ$, and the sum of the lengths of the edges in the tree is minimum. The similarly defined geometric $δ$-minimum bottleneck spanning tree problem ($δ$-MBST), is the problem of finding a degree bounded spanning tree such that the length of the longest edge is minimum. For point sets that lie in the Euclidean plane, both of these problems have been shown to be NP-hard for certain specific values of $δ$. In this paper, we investigate the $δ$-MBST problem in $3$-dimensional Euclidean space and $3$-dimensional rectilinear space. We show that the problems are NP-hard for certain values of $δ$, and we provide inapproximability results for these cases. We also describe new approximation algorithms for solving these $3$-dimensional variants, and then analyse their worst-case performance.

Neighboring mapping points theorem
Published in Algebr. Geom. Topol. 23 (2023) 3043-3070 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce and study a new family of extensions for the Borsuk-Ulam and topological Radon type theorems. The defining idea for this new family is to replace requirements of the form `a subset that is large in some sense goes to a singleton' with requirements of the milder form `a subset that is large in some sense goes to a subset that is small in some sense'. This approach covers the case of mappings m-sphere to n-space with m<n and extends to wider classes of spaces.
On three outer-independent domination related parameters in graphs
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics, 294 (2021), 115-124 • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a graph and let $S\subseteq V(G)$. The set $S$ is a double outer-independent dominating set of $G$ if $|N[v]\cap D|\geq2$, for all $v\in V(G)$, and $V(G)\setminus S$ is independent. Similarly, $S$ is a $2$-outer-independent dominating set, if every vertex from $V(G)\setminus S$ has at least two neighbors in $S$ and $V(G)\setminus S$ is independent. Finally, $S$ is a total outer-independent dominating set if every vertex from $V(G)$ has a neighbor in $S$ and the complement of $S$ is an independent set. The double, total or $2$-outer-independent domination number of $G$ is the smallest possible cardinality of any double, total or $2$-outer-independent dominating set of $G$, respectively. In this paper, the $2$-outer-independent, the total outer-independent and the double outer-independent domination numbers of graphs are investigated. We prove some Nordhaus-Gaddum type inequalities, derive their computational complexity and present several bounds for them.

Quasi-homogeneity of the moduli space of stable maps to homogeneous spaces (II)
Let $G$ be a connected, simply connected, simple, complex, linear algebraic group. Let $P$ be an arbitrary parabolic subgroup of $G$. Let $X=G/P$ be the $G$-homogeneous projective space attached to this situation. Let $d\in H_2(X)$ be a degree. Let $\overline{M}_{0,3}(X,d)$ be the (coarse) moduli space of three pointed genus zero stable maps to $X$ of degree $d$. Building on and improving our previous results [Christoph Bärligea, Quasi-Homogeneity of the Moduli Space of Stable Maps to Homogeneous Spaces, Doc. Math. 23, 697-745 (2018), DOI: 10.25537/dm.2018v23.697-745], we prove that $\overline{M}_{0,3}(X,d)$ is quasi-homogeneous under the action of $\operatorname{Aut}(X)$ for all minimal degrees $d$ in $H_2(X)$. By a minimal degree in $H_2(X)$, we mean a degree $d\in H_2(X)$ which is minimal with the property that $q^d$ occurs (with non-zero coefficient) in the quantum product $σ_u\starσ_v$ of two Schubert classes $σ_u$ and $σ_v$, where $\star$ denotes the product in the (small) quantum cohomology ring $\mathit{QH}^*(X)$ attached to $X$. Along the way, we prove that $\overline{M}_{0,3}(X,d)$ is quasi-homogeneous under the action of $G$ for all minimal degrees $d$ in $H_2(X)$ except for one instance of $G$, $P$ and $d$ which occurs in type $\mathsf{G}_2$.

Matching complexes of small grids
The matching complex $M(G)$ of a simple graph $G$ is the simplicial complex consisting of the matchings on $G$. The matching complex $M(G)$ is isomorphic to the independence complex of the line graph $L(G)$. Braun and Hough introduced a family of graphs $Δ^m_n$, which is a generalization of the line graph of the $(n \times 2)$-grid graph. In this paper, we show that the independence complex of $Δ^m_n$ is a wedge of spheres. This gives an answer to a problem suggested by Braun and Hough.

Compositions with restricted parts
Euler showed that the number of partitions of $n$ into distinct parts equals the number of partitions of $n$ into odd parts. This theorem was generalized by Glaisher and further by Franklin. Recently, Beck made three conjectures on partitions with restricted parts, which were confirmed analytically by Andrews and Chern and combinatorially by Yang. Analogous to Euler's partition theorem, it is known that the number of compositions of $n$ with odd parts equals the number of compositions of $n+1$ with parts greater than one, as both numbers equal the Fibonacci number $F_n$. Recently, Sills provided a bijective proof for this result using binary sequences, and Munagi proved a generalization similar to Glaisher's result using the zigzag graphs of compositions. Extending Sills' bijection, we obtain a further generalizaiton which is analogous to Franklin's result. We establish, both analytically and combinatorially, two closed formulas for the number of compositions with restricted parts appearing in our generalization. We also prove some composition analogues for the conjectures of Beck.
Isolation of $k$-cliques
For any positive integer $k$ and any $n$-vertex graph $G$, let $ι(G,k)$ denote the size of a smallest set $D$ of vertices of $G$ such that the graph obtained from $G$ by deleting the closed neighbourhood of $D$ contains no $k$-clique. Thus, $ι(G,1)$ is the domination number of $G$. We prove that if $G$ is connected, then $ι(G,k) \leq \frac{n}{k+1}$ unless $G$ is a $k$-clique or $k = 2$ and $G$ is a $5$-cycle. The bound is sharp. The case $k=1$ is a classical result of Ore, and the case $k=2$ is a recent result of Caro and Hansberg. Our result solves a problem of Caro and Hansberg.

Estimating Some General Molecular Descriptors of Saturated Hydrocarbons
Published in Molecular Informatics 38 (2019) Art# 1900007 • View Publication • BIB
Three general molecular descriptors, namely the general sum-connectivity index, general Platt index and ordinary generalized geometric-arithmetic index, are studied here. Best possible bounds for the aforementioned descriptors of arbitrary saturated hydrocarbons are derived. These bounds are expressed in terms of number of carbon atoms and number of carbon-carbon bonds of the considered hydrocarbons.

Transition Property For Cube-Free Words
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study cube-free words over arbitrary non-unary finite alphabets and prove the following structural property: for every pair $(u,v)$ of $d$-ary cube-free words, if $u$ can be infinitely extended to the right and $v$ can be infinitely extended to the left respecting the cube-freeness property, then there exists a "transition" word $w$ over the same alphabet such that $uwv$ is cube free. The crucial case is the case of the binary alphabet, analyzed in the central part of the paper. The obtained "transition property", together with the developed technique, allowed us to solve cube-free versions of three old open problems by Restivo and Salemi. Besides, it has some further implications for combinatorics on words; e.g., it implies the existence of infinite cube-free words of very big subword (factor) complexity.
Occupancy fraction, fractional colouring, and triangle fraction
Given $\varepsilon>0$, there exists $f_0$ such that, if $f_0 \le f \le Δ^2+1$, then for any graph $G$ on $n$ vertices of maximum degree $Δ$ in which the neighbourhood of every vertex in $G$ spans at most $Δ^2/f$ edges, (i) an independent set of $G$ drawn uniformly at random has at least $(1/2-\varepsilon)(n/Δ)\log f$ vertices in expectation, and (ii) the fractional chromatic number of $G$ is at most $(2+\varepsilon)Δ/\log f$. These bounds cannot in general be improved by more than a factor $2$ asymptotically. One may view these as stronger versions of results of Ajtai, Komlós and Szemerédi (1981) and Shearer (1983). The proofs use a tight analysis of the hard-core model.

On the $d$-cluster generalization of Erdős-Ko-Rado
If $2 \le d \le k$ and $n \ge dk/(d-1)$, a $d$-cluster is defined to be a collection of $d$ elements of ${[n] \choose k}$ with empty intersection and union of size no more than $2k$. Mubayi conjectured that the largest size of a $d$-cluster-free family $\mathcal{F} \subset {[n] \choose k}$ is ${n-1 \choose k-1}$, with equality holding only for a maximum-sized star. Here, we resolve Mubayi's conjecture and prove a slightly stronger result, thus completing a new generalization of the Erdős-Ko-Rado Theorem.
EPPA for two-graphs and antipodal metric spaces
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 148 (2020), 1901-1915 • View Publication • BIB
We prove that the class of finite two-graphs has the extension property for partial automorphisms (EPPA, or Hrushovski property), thereby answering a question of Macpherson. In other words, we show that the class of graphs has the extension property for switching automorphisms. We present a short, self-contained, purely combinatorial proof which also proves EPPA for the class of integer valued antipodal metric spaces of diameter 3, answering a question of Aranda et al. The class of two-graphs is an important new example which behaves differently from all the other known classes with EPPA: Two-graphs do not have the amalgamation property with automorphisms (APA), their Ramsey expansion has to add a graph, it is not known if they have coherent EPPA and even EPPA itself cannot be proved using the Herwig--Lascar theorem.

On grids in point-line arrangements in the plane
Published in Discrete and Computational Geometry 2020 • View Publication • BIB
The famous Szemerédi-Trotter theorem states that any arrangement of $n$ points and $n$ lines in the plane determines $O(n^{4/3})$ incidences, and this bound is tight. In this paper, we prove the following Turán-type result for point-line incidence. Let $\mathcal{L}_1$ and $\mathcal{L}_2$ be two sets of $t$ lines in the plane and let $P=\{\ell_1 \cap \ell_2 : \ell_1 \in \mathcal{L}_1, \ell_2 \in \mathcal{L}_2\}$ be the set of intersection points between $\mathcal{L}_1$ and $\mathcal{L}_2$. We say that $(P, \mathcal{L}_1 \cup \mathcal{L}_2)$ forms a \emph{natural $t\times t$ grid} if $|P| =t^2$, and $conv(P)$ does not contain the intersection point of some two lines in $\mathcal{L}_i,$ for $i = 1,2.$ For fixed $t > 1$, we show that any arrangement of $n$ points and $n$ lines in the plane that does not contain a natural $t\times t$ grid determines $O(n^{\frac{4}{3}- \varepsilon})$ incidences, where $\varepsilon = \varepsilon(t)$. We also provide a construction of $n$ points and $n$ lines in the plane that does not contain a natural $2 \times 2$ grid and determines at least $Ω({n^{1+\frac{1}{14}}})$ incidences.

Further Combinatorial Identities deriving from the $n$-th power of a $2 \times 2$ matrix
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics 154 (2006), no. 8, 1301--1308 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we use a formula for the $n$-th power of a $2\times2$ matrix $A$ (in terms of the entries in $A$) to derive various combinatorial identities. Three examples of our results follow. 1) We show that if $m$ and $n$ are positive integers and $s \in \{0,1,2,\dots,$ $\lfloor (mn-1)/2 \rfloor \}$, then \begin{multline*} \sum_{i,j,k,t}2^{1+2t-mn+n} \frac{(-1)^{nk+i(n+1)}}{1+δ_{(m-1)/2,\,i+k}} \binom{m-1-i}{i} \binom{m-1-2i}{k}\times\\ \binom{n(m-1-2(i+k))}{2j}\binom{j}{t-n(i+k)} \binom{n-1-s+t}{s-t}\\ =\binom{mn-1-s}{s}. \end{multline*} 2) The generalized Fibonacci polynomial $f_{m}(x,s)$ can be expressed as \[ f_{m}(x,s)= \sum_{k=0}^{\lfloor (m-1)/2 \rfloor}\binom{m-k-1}{k}x^{m-2k-1}s^{k}. \] We prove that the following functional equation holds: \begin{equation*} f_{mn}(x,s)=f_{m}(x,s)\times f_{n}\left (\,f_{m+1}(x,s)+sf_{m-1}(x,s), \,-(-s)^{m}\right) . \end{equation*} 3) If an arithmetical function $f$ is multiplicative and for each prime $p$ there is a complex number $g(p)$ such that \begin{equation*} f(p^{n+1}) = f(p)f(p^{n})- g(p)f(p^{n-1}), \hspace{15pt} n \geq 1, \end{equation*} then $f$ is said to be \emph{specially multiplicative}. We give another derivation of the following formula for a specially multiplicative function $f$ evaluated at a prime power: \begin{equation*} f(p^{k})=\sum_{j=0}^{\lfloor k/2 \rfloor}(-1)^{j} \binom{k-j}{j}f(p)^{k-2j}g(p)^{j}. \end{equation*} We also prove various other combinatorial identities.

Hopping from Chebyshev polynomials to permutation statistics
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 26(3): Paper #P3.27, 17 pp., 2019 • View Publication • BIB
We prove various formulas which express exponential generating functions counting permutations by the peak number, valley number, double ascent number, and double descent number statistics in terms of the exponential generating function for Chebyshev polynomials, as well as cyclic analogues of these formulas for derangements. We give several applications of these results, including formulas for the $(-1)$-evaluation of some of these distributions. Our proofs are combinatorial and involve the use of monomino-domino tilings, the modified Foata-Strehl action (a.k.a. valley-hopping), and a cyclic analogue of this action due to Sun and Wang.
