Chebyshev coordinates and Salem numbers
By expressing polynomials in the basis of Chebyshev polynomials, certain families of hyperbolic polynomials appear naturally. Some of these families have all their roots in the interval $[-2,2]$. In many cases the span of the family of polynomials thus found is greater than 4, and we show that they are the minimal polynomials of Salem numbers, possibly multiplied by some cyclotomic polynomials. In addition, we show how to compute the limit of the largest and smallest roots.
A rainbow version of Mantel's Theorem
Mantel's Theorem asserts that a simple $n$ vertex graph with more than $\frac{1}{4}n^2$ edges has a triangle (three mutually adjacent vertices). Here we consider a rainbow variant of this problem. We prove that whenever $G_1, G_2, G_3$ are simple graphs on a common set of $n$ vertices and $|E(G_i)| > ( \frac{ 26 - 2 \sqrt{7} }{81})n^2 \approx 0.2557 n^2$ for $1 \le i \le 3$, then there exist distinct vertices $v_1,v_2,v_3$ so that (working with the indices modulo 3) we have $v_i v_{i+1} \in E(G_i)$ for $1 \le i \le 3$. We provide an example to show this bound is best possible. This also answers a question of Diwan and Mubayi. We include a new short proof of Mantel's Theorem we obtained as a byproduct.

Generalisations of the Harer-Zagier recursion for 1-point functions
Harer and Zagier proved a recursion to enumerate gluings of a $2d$-gon that result in an orientable genus $g$ surface, in their work on Euler characteristics of moduli spaces of curves. Analogous results have been discovered for other enumerative problems, so it is natural to pose the following question: how large is the family of problems for which these so-called 1-point recursions exist? In this paper, we prove the existence of 1-point recursions for a class of enumerative problems that have Schur function expansions. In particular, we recover the Harer-Zagier recursion, but our methodology also applies to the enumeration of dessins d'enfant, to Bousquet-Mélou-Schaeffer numbers, to monotone Hurwitz numbers, and more. On the other hand, we prove that there is no 1-point recursion that governs simple Hurwitz numbers. Our results are effective in the sense that one can explicitly compute particular instances of 1-point recursions, and we provide several examples. We conclude the paper with a brief discussion and a conjecture relating 1-point recursions to the theory of topological recursion.

An overview of $(κ,τ)$-regular sets and their applications
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics, 2019 • View Publication • BIB
A ($κ$,$τ$)-regular set is a vertex subset S inducing a $κ$-regular subgraph such that every vertex out of S has $τ$ neighbors in S. This article is an expository overview of the main results obtained for graphs with ($κ$,$τ$)-regular sets. The graphs with classical combinatorial structures, like perfect matchings, Hamilton cycles, efficient dominating sets, etc, are characterized by ($κ$,$τ$)-regular sets whose determination is equivalent to the determination of those classical combinatorial structures. The characterization of graphs with these combinatorial structures are presented. The determination of ($κ$,$τ$)-regular sets in a finite number of steps is deduced and the main spectral properties of these sets are described.

Alternate minimization and doubly stochastic matrices
Published in Integers 20A (2020), \#A10, 1--17 • Search Publication
Sinkhorn's alternative minimization algorithm applied to a positive $n\times n$ matrix converges to a doubly stochastic matrix. If the algorithm, applied to a $2\times 2$ matrix, converges in a finite number of iterations, then it converges in at most two iterations, and the structure of such matrices is determined.

Pattern avoidance in permutations and their squares
We study permutations $p$ such that both $p$ and $p^2$ avoid a given pattern $q$. We obtain a generating function for the case of $q=312$ (equivalently, $q=231$), we prove that if $q$ is monotone increasing, then above a certain length, there are no such permutations, and we prove an upper bound for $q=321$. We also present some intriguing questions in the case of $q=132$.
On the structure of (claw,bull)-free graphs
In this research, we determine the structure of (claw, bull)-free graphs. We show that every connected (claw, bull)-free graph is either an expansion of a path, an expansion of a cycle, or the complement of a triangle-free graph; where an expansion of a graph $G$ is obtained by replacing its vertices with disjoint cliques and adding all edges between cliques corresponding to adjacent vertices of $G$. This result also reveals facts about the structure of triangle-free graphs, which might be of independent interest.
Spanning 2-Forests and Resistance Distance in 2-Connected Graphs
A spanning 2-forest separating vertices $u$ and $v$ of an undirected connected graph is a spanning forest with 2 components such that $u$ and $v$ are in distinct components. Aside from their combinatorial significance, spanning 2-forests have an important application to the calculation of resistance distance or effective resistance. The resistance distance between vertices $u$ and $v$ in a graph representing an electrical circuit with unit resistance on each edge is the number of spanning 2-forests separating $u$ and $v$ divided by the number of spanning trees in the graph. There are also well-known matrix theoretic methods for calculating resistance distance, but the way in which the structure of the underlying graph determines resistance distance via these methods is not well understood. For any connected graph $G$ with a 2-separator separating vertices $u$ and $v$, we show that the number of spanning trees and spanning 2-forests separating $u$ and $v$ can be expressed in terms of these same quantities for the smaller separated graphs, which makes computation significantly more tractable. An important special case is the preservation of the number of spanning 2-forests if $u$ and $v$ are in the same smaller graph. In this paper we demonstrate that this method of calculating resistance distance is more suitable for certain structured families of graphs than the more standard methods. We apply our results to count the number of spanning 2-forests and calculate the resistance distance in a family of Sierpinski triangles and in the family of linear 2-trees with a single bend.

The smooth torus orbit closures in the Grassmannians
It is known that for the natural algebraic torus actions on the Grassmannians, the closures of torus orbits are toric varieties, and that these toric varieties are smooth if and only if the corresponding matroid polytopes are simple. We prove that simple matroid polytopes are products of simplices and smooth torus orbit closures in the Grassmannians are products of complex projective spaces. Moreover, it turns out that the smooth torus orbit closures are uniquely determined by the corresponding simple matroid polytopes.

A note on lattices with many sublattices
For every natural number $n\geq 5$, we prove that the number of subuniverses of an $n$-element lattice is $2^n$, $13\cdot 2^{n-4}$, $23\cdot 2^{n-5}$, or less than $23\cdot 2^{n-5}$. By a subuniverse, we mean a sublattice or the emptyset. Also, we describe the $n$-element lattices with exactly $2^n$, $13\cdot 2^{n-4}$, or $23\cdot 2^{n-5}$ subuniverses.

Ring of Flows of $k$-dimensional Autonomous Dynamical Systems
We construct a ring of flows where we can decompose autonomous nonlinear dynamical systems into smaller parts, then solve each part and finally put everything together to obtain the exact solution of these systems.

On the structure of distance sets over prime fields
Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be a finite field of order $q$ and $\mathcal{E}$ be a set in $\mathbb{F}_q^d$. The distance set of $\mathcal{E}$, denoted by $Δ(\mathcal{E})$, is the set of distinct distances determined by the pairs of points in $\mathcal{E}$. Very recently, Iosevich, Koh, and Parshall (2018) proved that if $|\mathcal{E}|\gg q^{d/2}$, then the quotient set of $Δ(\mathcal{E})$ satisfies \[\left\vert\frac{Δ(\mathcal{E})}{Δ(\mathcal{E})}\right\vert=\left\vert \left\lbrace\frac{a}{b}\colon a, b\in Δ(\mathcal{E}), b\ne 0\right\rbrace\right\vert\gg q.\] In this paper, we break the exponent $d/2$ when $\mathcal{E}$ is a Cartesian product of sets over a prime field. More precisely, let $p$ be a prime and $A\subset \mathbb{F}_p$. If $\mathcal{E}=A^d\subset \mathbb{F}_p^d$ and $|\mathcal{E}|\gg p^{\frac{d}{2}-\varepsilon}$ for some $\varepsilon>0$, then we have \[\left\vert\frac{Δ(\mathcal{E})}{Δ(\mathcal{E})}\right\vert, ~\left\vert Δ(\mathcal{E})\cdot Δ(\mathcal{E})\right\vert \gg p.\] Such improvements are not possible over arbitrary finite fields. These results give us a better understanding about the structure of distance sets and the Erdős-Falconer distance conjecture over finite fields.

Expander Graphs -- Both Local and Global
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a finite graph. For $v\in V$ we denote by $G_v$ the subgraph of $G$ that is induced by $v$'s neighbor set. We say that $G$ is $(a,b)$-regular for $a>b>0$ integers, if $G$ is $a$-regular and $G_v$ is $b$-regular for every $v\in V$. Recent advances in PCP theory call for the construction of infinitely many $(a,b)$-regular expander graphs $G$ that are expanders also locally. Namely, all the graphs $\{G_v|v\in V\}$ should be expanders as well. While random regular graphs are expanders with high probability, they almost surely fail to expand locally. Here we construct two families of $(a,b)$-regular graphs that expand both locally and globally. We also analyze the possible local and global spectral gaps of $(a,b)$-regular graphs. In addition, we examine our constructions vis-a-vis properties which are considered characteristic of high-dimensional expanders.

Expanders - how to find them, and what to find in them
A graph $G=(V,E)$ is called an expander if every vertex subset $U$ of size up to $|V|/2$ has an external neighborhood whose size is comparable to $|U|$. Expanders have been a subject of intensive research for more than three decades and have become one of the central notions of modern graph theory. We first discuss the above definition of an expander and its alternatives. Then we present examples of families of expanding graphs and state basic properties of expanders. Next, we introduce a way to argue that a given graph contains a large expanding subgraph. Finally we research properties of expanding graphs, such as existence of small separators, of cycles (including cycle lengths), and embedding of large minors.

The Hopf structure of symmetric group characters as symmetric functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
In arXiv:1605.06672 the authors introduced inhomogeneous bases of the ring of symmetric functions. The elements in these bases have the property that they evaluate to characters of symmetric groups. In this article we develop further properties of these bases by proving product and coproduct formulae. In addition, we give the transition coefficients between the elementary symmetric functions and the irreducible character basis.

Factors and connected factors in tough graphs with high isolated toughness
Let $G$ be a graph and let $f$ be a positive integer-valued function on $V(G)$. Assume that for all $S\subseteq V(G)$, $$\sum_{v\in I(G\setminus S)}f(v)(f(v)+1)\le |S|,$$ where $I(G\setminus S)$ denotes the set of isolated vertices of $G\setminus S$. In this paper, we show that if for all $S\subseteq V(G)$, $$ω(G\setminus S)\le \sum_{v\in S}(f(v)-1)+1,$$ and $\sum_{v\in V(G)}f(v)$ is even, then $G$ has a factor $F$ such that for each vertex $v$, $d_F(v)=f(v)$, where $ω(G\setminus S)$ denotes the number of components of $G\setminus S$. Moreover, we show that if for all $S\subseteq V(G)$, $$ω(G\setminus S)\le \frac{1}{4}|S|+1,$$ and $f\ge 2$, then $G$ has a connected factor $H$ such that for each vertex $v$, $d_H(v)\in \{f(v),f(v)+1\}$.

Colored partitions and the hooklength formula: partition statistic identities
We give relations between the joint distributions of multiple hook lengths and of frequencies and part sizes in partitions, extending prior work in this area. These results are discovered by investigating truncations of the Han/Nekrasov-Okounkov hooklength formula and of (k,j)-colored partitions, a unification of k-colored partitions and overpartitions. We establish the observed relations at the constant and linear terms for all n, and for j=2 in their quadratic term, with the associated hook/frequency identities. Further results of this type seem likely.

Powers of a matrix and combinatorial identities
Published in INTEGERS: The Electronic Journal of Combinatorial Number Theory 5 (2005), A13, 9 pp • Search Publication
In this article we obtain a general polynomial identity in $k$ variables, where $k\geq 2$ is an arbitrary positive integer. We use this identity to give a closed-form expression for the entries of the powers of a $k \times k$ matrix. Finally, we use these results to derive various combinatorial identities.

On separable abelian $p$-groups
Published in ARS Mathematica Contemporanea, Vol. 17, No.2 (2019), 467-479 • View Publication • BIB
An $S$-ring (a Schur ring) is said to be separable with respect to a class of groups $\mathcal{K}$ if every algebraic isomorphism from the $S$-ring in question to an $S$-ring over a group from $\mathcal{K}$ is induced by a combinatorial isomorphism. A finite group is said to be \emph{separable} with respect to $\mathcal{K}$ if every $S$-ring over this group is separable with respect to $\mathcal{K}$. We provide a complete classification of abelian $p$-groups separable with respect to the class of abelian groups.
