Infinite Limits of Finite-Dimensional Permutation Structures, and their Automorphism Groups: Between Model Theory and Combinatorics
In the course of classifying the homogeneous permutations, Cameron introduced the viewpoint of permutations as structures in a language of two linear orders, and this structural viewpoint is taken up here. The majority of this thesis is concerned with Cameron's problem of classifying the homogeneous structures in a language of finitely many linear orders, which we call finite-dimensional permutation structures. Towards this problem, we present a construction that we conjecture produces all such structures. Some evidence for this conjecture is given, including the classification of the homogeneous 3-dimensional permutation structures. We next consider the topological dynamics, in the style of Kechris, Pestov, and Todorčević, of the automorphism groups of the homogeneous finite-dimensional permutation structures we have constructed, which requires proving a structural Ramsey theorem for all the associated amalgamation classes. Because the $\emptyset$-definable equivalence relations in these homogeneous finite-dimensional permutation structures may form arbitrary finite distributive lattices, the model-theoretic algebraic closure operation may become quite complex, and so we require the framework recently introduced by Hubička and Nešetril. Finally, we consider the decision problem for whether a finitely-constrained permutation avoidance class is atomic, or equivalently, has the joint embedding property. As a first approximation to this problem, we prove the undecidability of the corresponding decision problem in the category of graphs. Modifying this proof also gives the undecidability, in the category of graphs, of the corresponding decision problem for the joint homomorphism property, which is of interest in infinite-domain constraint satisfaction problems.

We prove that if $g(x,y)$ is a polynomial of constant degree $d$ that $y_2-y_1$ does not divide $g(x_1,y_1)-g(x_2,y_2)$, then for any finite set $A \subset \mathbb{R}$ \[ |X| \gg_d |A|^2, \quad \text{where} \ X:=\left\{\frac{g(a_1,b_1)-g(a_2,b_2)}{b_2-b_1} :\, a_1,a_2,b_1,b_2 \in A \right\}. \] We will see this bound is also tight for some polynomial $g(x,y)$.

Asymptotics of principal evaluations of Schubert polynomials for layered permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
Denote by $u(n)$ the largest principal specialization of the Schubert polynomial: $ u(n) := \max_{w \in S_n} \mathfrak{S}_w(1,\ldots,1) $ Stanley conjectured in [arXiv:1704.00851] that there is a limit $\lim_{n\to \infty} \, \frac{1}{n^2} \log u(n), $ and asked for a limiting description of permutations achieving the maximum $u(n)$. Merzon and Smirnov conjectured in [arXiv:1410.6857] that this maximum is achieved on layered permutations. We resolve both Stanley's problems restricted to layered permutations.

Revisiting the Hamiltonian Theme in the Square of a Block: The General Case
Published • View Publication • BIB
This is the second part of joint research in which we show that every $2$-connected graph $G$ has the ${\cal F}_4$ property. That is, given distinct $x_i\in V(G)$, $1\leq i\leq 4$, there is an $x_1x_2$-hamiltonian path in $G^2$ containing different edges $x_3y_3, x_4y_4\in E(G)$ for some $y_3,y_4\in V(G)$. However, it was shown already in \cite[Theorem 2]{cf1:refer} that 2-connected DT-graphs have the ${\cal F}_4$ property; based on this result we generalize it to arbitrary $2$-connected graphs. We also show that these results are best possible.

Approximating the position of a hidden agent in a graph
A cat and mouse play a pursuit and evasion game on a connected graph $G$ with $n$ vertices. The mouse moves to vertices $m_1,m_2,\dots$ of $G$ where $m_i$ is in the closed neighbourhood of $m_{i-1}$ for $i\geq2$. The cat tests vertices $c_1,c_2,\dots$ of $G$ without restriction and is told whether the distance between $c_i$ and $m_i$ is at most the distance between $c_{i-1}$ and $m_{i-1}$. The mouse knows the cat's strategy, but the cat does not know the mouse's strategy. We will show that the cat can determine the position of the mouse up to distance $O(\sqrt{n})$ within finite time and that this bound is tight up to a constant factor. This disproves a conjecture of Dayanikli and Rautenbach.

The Steiner $k$-Wiener index of graphs with given minimum degree
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a connected graph. The Steiner distance $d(S)$ of a set $S$ of vertices is the minimum size of a connected subgraph of $G$ containing all vertices of $S$. For $k\in \mathbb{N}$, the Steiner $k$-Wiener index $SW_k(G)$ is defined as $\sum_S d(S)$, where the sum is over all $k$-element subsets of the vertex set of $G$. The average Steiner $k$-distance $μ_k(G)$ of $G$ is defined as $\binom{n}{k}^{-1} SW_k(G)$. In this paper we prove upper bounds on the Steiner Wiener index and the average Steiner distance of graphs with given order $n$ and minimum degree $δ$. Specifically we show that $SW_k(G) \leq \frac{k-1}{k+1}\frac{3n}{δ+1} \binom{n}{k} + O(n^{k})$, and that $μ_k(G) \leq \frac{k-1}{k+1}\frac{3n}{δ+1} + O(1)$. We improve this bound for triangle-free graphs to $SW_k(G) \leq \frac{k-1}{k+1}\frac{2n}δ \binom{n}{k} + O(n^{k})$, and $μ_k(G) \leq \frac{k-1}{k+1}\frac{2n}δ + O(1)$. All bounds are best possible.

Distances to Lattice Points in Knapsack Polyhedra
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give an optimal upper bound for the maximum-norm distance from a vertex of a knapsack polyhedron to its nearest feasible lattice point. In a randomised setting, we show that the upper bound can be significantly improved on average. As a corollary, we obtain an optimal upper bound for the additive integrality gap of integer knapsack problems and show that the integrality gap of a "typical" knapsack problem is drastically smaller than the integrality gap that occurs in a worst case scenario. We also prove that, in a generic case, the integer programming gap admits a natural optimal lower bound.
3-uniform hypergraphs: modular decomposition and realization by tournaments
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $H$ be a 3-uniform hypergraph. A tournament $T$ defined on $V(T)=V(H)$ is a realization of $H$ if the edges of $H$ are exactly the 3-element subsets of $V(T)$ that induce 3-cycles. We characterize the 3-uniform hypergraphs that admit realizations by using a suitable modular decomposition.

On the $q$-derivative and $q$-series expansions
Published in International Journal of Number Theory 8 (2013)2069--2089 • View Publication • BIB
Using a general $q$-series expansion, we derive some nontrivial $q$-formulas involving many infinite products. A multitude of Hecke--type series identities are derived. Some general formulas for sums of any number of squares are given. A new representation for the generating function for sums of three triangular numbers is derived, which is slightly different from that of Andrews, also implies the famous result of Gauss where every integer is the sum of three triangular numbers.

Threshold functions for substructures in random subsets of finite vector spaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
The study of substructures in random objects has a long history, beginning with Erdős and Rényi's work on subgraphs of random graphs. We study the existence of certain substructures in random subsets of vector spaces over finite fields. First we provide a general framework which can be applied to establish coarse threshold results and prove a limiting Poisson distribution at the threshold scale. To illustrate our framework we apply our results to $k$-term arithmetic progressions, sums, right triangles, parallelograms and affine planes. We also find coarse thresholds for the property that a random subset of a finite vector space is sum-free, or is a Sidon set.

$M_2$-Ranks of overpartitions modulo $6$ and $10$
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we obtain inequalities on $M_2$-ranks of overpartitions modulo $6$. Let $\overline{N}_2(s,m,n)$ to be the number of overpartitions of $n$ whose $M_2$-rank is congruent to $s$ modulo $m$. For $M_2$-ranks modulo $3$, Lovejoy and Osburn derived the generating function of $\overline{N}_2(s,3,n)-\overline{N}_2(t,3,n)$, which implies the inequalities $\overline{N}_2(0,3,n)\geq\overline{N}_2(1,3,n)$. For $\ell=6, 10$, we consider the generating function $\overline{R}_{s,t}(d,\ell)$ of the $M_2$-rank differences $\overline{N}_2(s,\ell,\ell n/2+d) + \overline{N}_2(s+1,\ell,\ell n/2+d) - \overline{N}_2(t,\ell,\ell n/2+d) - \overline{N}_2(t+1,\ell,\ell n/2+d)$. By the method of Lovejoy and Osburn, we derive a formula for $\overline{R}_{0,2}(d,6)$. This leads to the inequalities for $n\geq0$, $\overline{N}_2(0,6,3n)\geq\overline{N}_2(2,6,3n)$ and $\overline{N}_2(0,6,3n+1) \geq \overline{N}_2(2,6,3n+1)$. Based on the valence formula for modular functions, we compute $\overline{R}_{0,4}(d,10)$ and $\overline{R}_{1,3}(d,10)$. In particular, we notice that the generating function $\overline{R}_{0,2}(2,6)$ can be expressed in terms of the third order mock theta function $ρ(q)$, and the generating functions $\overline{R}_{0,4}(4,10)$, $\overline{R}_{1,3}(1,10)$ and $\overline{R}_{1,3}(4,10)$ can also be expressed in terms of the tenth order mock theta functions $φ(q)$ and $ψ(q)$.

On Arbitrarily Long Periodic Orbits of Evolutionary Games on Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A periodic behavior is a well observed phenomena in biological and economical systems. We show that evolutionary games on graphs with imitation dynamics can display periodic behavior for an arbitrary choice of game theoretical parameters describing social-dilemma games. We construct graphs and corresponding initial conditions whose trajectories are periodic with an arbitrary minimal period length. We also examine a periodic behavior of evolutionary games on graphs with the underlying graph being an acyclic (tree) graph. Astonishingly, even this acyclic structure allows for arbitrary long periodic behavior.
Signature Catalan Combinatorics
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Catalan numbers constitute one of the most important sequences in combinatorics. Catalan objects have been generalized in various directions, including the classical Fuss-Catalan objects and the rational Catalan generalization of Armstrong-Rhoades-Williams. We propose a wider generalization of these families indexed by a composition $s$ which is motivated by the combinatorics of planar rooted trees; when $s=(2,...,2)$ and $s=(k+1,...,k+1)$ we recover the classical Catalan and Fuss-Catalan combinatorics, respectively. Furthermore, to each pair $(a,b)$ of relatively prime numbers we can associate a signature that recovers the combinatorics of rational Catalan objects. We present explicit bijections between the resulting $s$-Catalan objects, and a fundamental recurrence that generalizes the fundamental recurrence of the classical Catalan numbers. Our framework allows us to define signature generalizations of parking functions which coincide with the generalized parking functions studied by Pitman-Stanley and Yan, as well as generalizations of permutations which coincide with the notion of Stirling multipermutations introduced by Gessel-Stanley. Some of our constructions differ from the ones of Armstrong-Rhoades-Williams, however as a byproduct of our extension, we obtain the additional notions of rational permutations and rational trees.

The thickness of Schubert cells as incidence structures
Published in J. Aust. Math. Soc. 109 (2020) 145-156 • View Publication • BIB
This paper explores the possible use of Schubert cells and Schubert varieties in finite geometry, particularly in regard to the question of whether these objects might be a source of understanding of ovoids or provide new examples. The main result provides a characterization of those Schubert cells for finite Chevalley groups which have the first property (thinness) of ovoids. More importantly, perhaps this short paper can help to bridge the modern language barrier between finite geometry and representation theory. For this purpose, this paper includes very brief surveys of the powerful lattice theory point of view from finite geometry and the powerful method of indexing points of flag varieties by Chevalley generators from representation theory.

The number of independent sets in an irregular graph
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 138 (2019), 172--195 • View Publication • BIB
Settling Kahn's conjecture (2001), we prove the following upper bound on the number $i(G)$ of independent sets in a graph $G$ without isolated vertices: \[ i(G) \le \prod_{uv \in E(G)} i(K_{d_u,d_v})^{1/(d_u d_v)}, \] where $d_u$ is the degree of vertex $u$ in $G$. Equality occurs when $G$ is a disjoint union of complete bipartite graphs. The inequality was previously proved for regular graphs by Kahn and Zhao. We also prove an analogous tight lower bound: \[ i(G) \ge \prod_{v \in V(G)} i(K_{d_v+1})^{1/(d_v + 1)}, \] where equality occurs for $G$ a disjoint union of cliques. More generally, we prove bounds on the weighted versions of these quantities, i.e., the independent set polynomial, or equivalently the partition function of the hard-core model with a given fugacity on a graph.

Packing and domination parameters in digraphs
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics, 269 (2019), 184-192 • View Publication • BIB
Given a digraph $D=(V,A)$, a set $B\subset V$ is a packing set in $D$ if there are no arcs joining vertices of $B$ and for any two vertices $x,y\in B$ the sets of in-neighbors of $x$ and $y$ are disjoint. The set $S$ is a dominating set (an open dominating set) in $D$ if every vertex not in $S$ (in $V$) has an in-neighbor in $S$. Moreover, a dominating set $S$ is called a total dominating set if the subgraph induced by $S$ has no isolated vertices. The packing sets of maximum cardinality and the (total, open) dominating sets of minimum cardinality in digraphs are studied in this article. We prove that the two optimal sets concerning packing and domination achieve the same value for directed trees, and give some applications of it. We also show analogous equalities for all connected contrafunctional digraphs, and characterize all such digraphs $D$ for which such equalities are satisfied. Moreover, sharp bounds on the maximum and the minimum cardinalities of packing and dominating sets, respectively, are given for digraphs. Finally, we present solutions for two open problems, concerning total and open dominating sets of minimum cardinality, pointed out in [Australas. J. Combin. 39 (2007), 283--292].

Asymptotic results for Representation Theory
Representation theory of finite groups portrays a marvelous crossroad of group theory, algebraic combinatorics, and probability. In particular the Plancherel measure is a probability that arises naturally from representation theory, and in this thesis we consider three ramifications of asymptotic questions for random Plancherel distributed representations. First we recall irreducible characters of the symmetric group, which are indexed by integer partitions. We focus on the so called 'dual approach', in which the partition indexing a character is now considered to be the variable. We extend a famous result of Kerov on the asymptotic of Plancherel distributed characters by studying partial trace and partial sum of a representation matrix. We decompose each of these objects into a main term and a remainder, and in each case we prove a central limit theorem for the main term. We apply these results to prove a law of large numbers for the partial sum. In the second part we consider projective representations of the symmetric group by converting a multirectangular approach developed by Stanley for the classical case. In particular, we present a positivity conjecture for the coefficients of the renormalized projective character, written as a polynomial in a new set of coordinates. We prove the positivity for the leading term of the polynomial. In the last part of the thesis we recall the theory of supercharacters, which is an alternative tool to representation theory when the classical approach proves to be intractable. We show that a generalization of the Plancherel measure, called the superplancherel measure, arises naturally. We focus on a particular supercharacter theory for the upper unitriangular group in which supercharacters are indexed by set partitions. We prove a limit shape result for a random set partition according to this distribution.

Towards integrable structure in 3d Ising model

We construct a weight matrix for the 3D Ising model satisfying the so-called twisted tetrahedron equation. The result is based on the theory of the n-simplicial complex and the invented recursion procedure on the space of n-simplex solutions in correspondences. The weight matrix reveals some properties intrinsic for the hypercube combinatorics.

Beating Fredman-Komlós for perfect $k$-hashing
Published • View Publication • BIB
We say a subset $C \subseteq \{1,2,\dots,k\}^n$ is a $k$-hash code (also called $k$-separated) if for every subset of $k$ codewords from $C$, there exists a coordinate where all these codewords have distinct values. Understanding the largest possible rate (in bits), defined as $(\log_2 |C|)/n$, of a $k$-hash code is a classical problem. It arises in two equivalent contexts: (i) the smallest size possible for a perfect hash family that maps a universe of $N$ elements into $\{1,2,\dots,k\}$, and (ii) the zero-error capacity for decoding with lists of size less than $k$ for a certain combinatorial channel. A general upper bound of $k!/k^{k-1}$ on the rate of a $k$-hash code (in the limit of large $n$) was obtained by Fredman and Komlós in 1984 for any $k \geq 4$. While better bounds have been obtained for $k=4$, their original bound has remained the best known for each $k \ge 5$. In this work, we obtain the first improvement to the Fredman-Komlós bound for every $k \ge 5$. While we get explicit (numerical) bounds for $k=5,6$, for larger $k$ we only show that the FK bound can be improved by a positive, but unspecified, amount. Under a conjecture on the optimum value of a certain polynomial optimization problem over the simplex, our methods allow an effective bound to be computed for every $k$.
