Parity duality for the amplituhedron
Published in Compositio Math. 156 (2020) 2207-2262 • View Publication • BIB
The (tree) amplituhedron $\mathcal A_{n,k,m}(Z)$ is a certain subset of the Grassmannian introduced by Arkani-Hamed and Trnka in 2013 in order to study scattering amplitudes in $N=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. Confirming a conjecture of the first author, we show that when $m$ is even, a collection of affine permutations yields a triangulation of $\mathcal A_{n,k,m}(Z)$ for any $Z\in \operatorname{Gr}_{>0}(k+m,n)$ if and only if the collection of their inverses yields a triangulation of $\mathcal A_{n,n-m-k,m}(Z)$ for any $Z\in\operatorname{Gr}_{>0}(n-k,n)$. We prove this duality using the twist map of Marsh and Scott. We also show that this map preserves the canonical differential forms associated with the corresponding positroid cells, and hence obtain a parity duality for amplituhedron differential forms.

Subcritical phase of $d$-dimensional Poisson-Boolean percolation and its vacant set
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that the Poisson-Boolean percolation on $\mathbb{R}^d$ undergoes a sharp phase transition in any dimension under the assumption that the radius distribution has a $5d-3$ finite moment (in particular we do not assume that the distribution is bounded). More precisely, we prove that: -In the whole subcritical regime, the expected size of the cluster of the origin is finite, and furthermore we obtain bounds for the origin to be connected to distance $n$: when the radius distribution has a finite exponential moment, the probability decays exponentially fast in $n$, and when the radius distribution has heavy tails, the probability is equivalent to the probability that the origin is covered by a ball going to distance $n$. - In the supercritical regime, it is proved that the probability of the origin being connected to infinity satisfies a mean-field lower bound. The same proof carries on to conclude that the vacant set of Poisson-Boolean percolation on $\mathbb{R}^d$ undergoes a sharp phase transition. This paper belongs to a series of papers using the theory of randomized algorithms to prove sharpness of phase transitions.

Independence Posets
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be an acylic directed graph. For each vertex $g \in G$, we define an involution on the independent sets of $G$. We call these involutions flips, and use them to define a new partial order on independent sets of $G$. Trim lattices generalize distributive lattices by removing the graded hypothesis: a graded trim lattice is a distributive lattice, and every distributive lattice is trim. Our independence posets are a further generalization of distributive lattices, eliminating also the lattice requirement: an independence poset that is a lattice is always a trim lattice, and every trim lattice is the independence poset for a unique (up to isomorphism) acyclic directed graph $G$. We characterize when an independence poset is a lattice with a graph-theoretic condition on $G$. We generalize the definition of rowmotion from distributive lattices to independence posets, and we show it can be computed in three different ways. We also relate our constructions to torsion classes, semibricks, and 2-simpleminded collections arising in the representation theory of certain acyclic finite-dimensional algebras.
Uniquely restricted matchings in subcubic graphs
A matching $M$ in a graph $G$ is uniquely restricted if no other matching in $G$ covers the same set of vertices. We conjecture that every connected subcubic graph with $m$ edges and $b$ bridges that is distinct from $K_{3,3}$ has a uniquely restricted matching of size at least $\frac{m+b}{6}$, and we establish this bound with $b$ replaced by the number of bridges that lie on a path between two vertices of degree at most $2$. Moreover, we prove that every connected subcubic graph of order $n$ and girth at least $7$ has a uniquely restricted matching of size at least $\frac{n-1}{3}$, which partially confirms a Conjecture of Fürst and Rautenbach (Some bounds on the uniquely restricted matching number, arXiv:1803.11032).
Maximum cuts in edge-colored graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The input of the Maximum Colored Cut problem consists of a graph $G=(V,E)$ with an edge-coloring $c:E\to \{1,2,3,\ldots , p\}$ and a positive integer $k$, and the question is whether $G$ has a nontrivial edge cut using at least $k$ colors. The Colorful Cut problem has the same input but asks for a nontrivial edge cut using all $p$ colors. Unlike what happens for the classical Maximum Cut problem, we prove that both problems are NP-complete even on complete, planar, or bounded treewidth graphs. Furthermore, we prove that Colorful Cut is NP-complete even when each color class induces a clique of size at most 3, but is trivially solvable when each color induces a $K_2$. On the positive side, we prove that Maximum Colored Cut is fixed-parameter tractable when parameterized by either $k$ or $p$, by constructing a cubic kernel in both cases.
On the geography of line arrangements
This is a short note on various results about the combinatorial properties of line arrangements in terms of the Chern numbers of the corresponding log surfaces. This resembles the study of the geography of surfaces of general type. We prove some new results about the distribution of Chern slopes, we prove a connection between their accumulation points and the accumulation points of linear $H$-constants on the plane, and we present two open problems in relation to geography over $\mathbb Q$ and over $\mathbb C$.

Asymptotics for the number of standard tableaux of skew shape and for weighted lozenge tilings
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove and generalize a conjecture in arXiv:1610.0474(4) about the asymptotics of $\frac{1}{\sqrt{n!}} f^{λ/μ}$, where $f^{λ/μ}$ is the number of standard Young tableaux of skew shape $λ/μ$ which have stable limit shape under the $1/\sqrt{n}$ scaling. The proof is based on the variational principle on the partition function of certain weighted lozenge tilings.
An Updated Experimental Evaluation of Graph Bipartization Methods
Published • View Publication • BIB
We experimentally evaluate the practical state-of-the-art in graph bipartization (Odd Cycle Transversal), motivated by recent advances in near-term quantum computing hardware and the related embedding problems. We assemble a preprocessing suite of fast input reduction routines from the Odd Cycle Transversal (OCT) and Vertex Cover (VC) literature, and compare algorithm implementations using Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization problems from the quantum literature. We also generate a corpus of frustrated cluster loop graphs, which have previously been used to benchmark quantum annealing hardware. The diversity of these graphs leads to harder OCT instances than in existing benchmarks. In addition to combinatorial branching algorithms for solving OCT directly, we study various reformulations into other NP-hard problems such as VC and Integer Linear Programming (ILP), enabling the use of solvers such as CPLEX. We find that for heuristic solutions with time constraints under a second, iterative compression routines jump-started with a heuristic solution perform best, after which point using a highly tuned solver like CPLEX is worthwhile. Results on exact solvers are split between using ILP formulations on CPLEX and solving VC formulations with a branch-and-reduce solver. We extend our results with a large corpus of synthetic graphs, establishing robustness and potential to generalize to other domain data. In total, over 8000 graph instances are evaluated, compared to the previous canonical corpus of 100 graphs. Finally, we provide all code and data in an open source suite, including a Python API for accessing reduction routines and branching algorithms, along with scripts for fully replicating our results.
A spectral version of the Moore problem for bipartite regular graphs
Let $b(k,θ)$ be the maximum order of a connected bipartite $k$-regular graph whose second largest eigenvalue is at most $θ$. In this paper, we obtain a general upper bound for $b(k,θ)$ for any $0\leq θ< 2\sqrt{k-1}$. Our bound gives the exact value of $b(k,θ)$ whenever there exists a bipartite distance-regular graph of degree $k$, second largest eigenvalue $θ$, diameter $d$ and girth $g$ such that $g\geq 2d-2$. For certain values of $d$, there are infinitely many such graphs of various valencies $k$. However, for $d=11$ or $d\geq 15$, we prove that there are no bipartite distance-regular graphs with $g\geq 2d-2$.

State Diagrams of a Class of Singular LFSR and Their Applications to the Construction of de Bruijn Cycles
The state diagrams of a class of singular linear feedback shift registers (LFSR) are discussed. It is shown that the state diagrams of the given LFSR have special structures. An algorithm is presented to construct a new class of de Bruijn cycles from the state diagrams of these singular LFSR.

Cayley graphs of order kp are hamiltonian for k < 48
Published in Art Discrete Appl. Math. 3 (2020), no. 2, Paper No. 2.02, 17 pp • View Publication • BIB
We provide a computer-assisted proof that if G is any finite group of order kp, where k < 48 and p is prime, then every connected Cayley graph on G is hamiltonian (unless kp = 2). As part of the proof, it is verified that every connected Cayley graph of order less than 48 is either hamiltonian connected or hamiltonian laceable (or has valence less than three).

Characteristic quasi-polynomials of ideals and signed graphs of classical root systems
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, 79 (2019), 179-192 • View Publication • BIB
With a main tool is signed graphs, we give a full description of the characteristic quasi-polynomials of ideals of classical root systems ($ABCD$) with respect to the integer and root lattices. As a result, we obtain a full description of the characteristic polynomials of the toric arrangements defined by these ideals. As an application, we provide a combinatorial verification to the fact that the characteristic polynomial of every ideal subarrangement factors over the dual partition of the ideal in the classical cases.

Matching on a line
Matching is a method of the design of experiments. If we had an even number of patients and wanted to form pairs of patients such that their ages, for example, in each pair be as close as possible, we would use nonbipartite matching. Not only do we present a fast method to do this, we also extend our approach to triples, quadruples, etc. In part 1 a matching algorithm uses kn points on a line as vertices, pairs of vertices as edges, and either absolute values of differences or the squares of differences as weights or distances. It forms n of k-tuples with the minimal sum of distances within each k-tuple in O(n log n) time. In part 2 we present a trivial algorithm for bipartite matching with absolute values or squares of differences as weights and a generalisation to tripartite matching on tripartite graphs.

The complement of a subspace in a classical polar space
Published • View Publication • BIB
In a polar space, embeddable into a projective space, we fix a subspace, that is contained in some hyperplane. The complement of that subspace resembles a slit space or a semiaffine space. We prove that under some assumptions the ambient polar space can be recovered in this complement.

A proof of the Murnaghan--Nakayama rule using Specht modules and tableau combinatorics
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Murnaghan--Nakayama rule is a combinatorial rule for the character values of symmetric groups. We give a new combinatorial proof by explicitly finding the trace of the representing matrices in the standard basis of Specht modules. This gives an essentially bijective proof of the rule. A key lemma is an extension of a straightening result proved by the second author to skew-tableaux. Our module theoretic methods also give short proofs of Pieri's rule and Young's rule.

Some results on the palette index of graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 21 no. 3 , Graph Theory (May 11, 2019) dmtcs:4509 • View Publication • BIB
Given a proper edge coloring $\varphi$ of a graph $G$, we define the palette $S_{G}(v,\varphi)$ of a vertex $v \in V(G)$ as the set of all colors appearing on edges incident with $v$. The palette index $\check s(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum number of distinct palettes occurring in a proper edge coloring of $G$. In this paper we give various upper and lower bounds on the palette index of $G$ in terms of the vertex degrees of $G$, particularly for the case when $G$ is a bipartite graph with small vertex degrees. Some of our results concern $(a,b)$-biregular graphs; that is, bipartite graphs where all vertices in one part have degree $a$ and all vertices in the other part have degree $b$. We conjecture that if $G$ is $(a,b)$-biregular, then $\check{s}(G)\leq 1+\max\{a,b\}$, and we prove that this conjecture holds for several families of $(a,b)$-biregular graphs. Additionally, we characterize the graphs whose palette index equals the number of vertices.

Kruskal-Katona type Problem
The Kruskal Katona theorem was proved in the 1960s. In the theorem, we are given an integer $r$ and families of sets $\mathcal{A}\subset \mathbb{N}^{(r)}$ and $\mathcal{B}\subset\mathbb{N}^{(r-1)}$ such that for every $A\in\mathcal{A}$, every subset of $A$ of size $r-1$ is in $\mathcal{B}$. We are interested in finding the mimimum size of $b=|\mathcal{B}|$ given fixed values of $r$ and $a=|\mathcal{A}|$. The Kruskal Katona theorem states that this mimimum occurs when both $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$ are initial segments of the colexicographic ordering. The Kruskal Katona theorem is very useful and has had many applications and generalisations. In this paper, we are interested in one particular generalisation, where instead of every subset of $A$ of size $r-1$ being in $\mathcal{B}$, we will instead ask that only $k$ of them are, where $k$ is some integer smaller than $r$. Note that setting $k=r$ is exactly the Kruskal Katona theorem. We will first find exact results for the cases where $0\leq k \leq 3$. For $k\geq 4$ we will not solve the question completely, however, we will find the exact result for infinitely many $a$. We will also provide a formula that is within some additive constant of the correct result for all $a$.

Decomposition of tensor products of Demazure crystals
Published • View Publication • BIB
A Demazure crystal is the basis at $q=0$ of a Demazure module. Demazure crystals play an important role in Schubert calculus because the character of a Demazure crystal in type A is identical to a key polynomial, which is closely related to Schubert polynomials. In this paper, we study tensor products of Demazure crystals. Each connected component of a tensor product of Demazure crystals need not be isomorphic to some Demazure crystal. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for every connected component of a tensor product to be isomorphic to some Demazure crystal. Also, we obtain the explicit formula for connected components. As applications, we study the positivity for structure constants of products of key polynomials, and we obtain an equation of crystals, which is an analog of the Leibniz rule for Demazure operators.

Erdős-Pósa property for labelled minors: 2-connected minors
Published • View Publication • BIB
In the 1960s, Erdős and Pósa proved that there is a packing-covering duality for cycles in graphs. As part of the graph minor project, Robertson and Seymour greatly extended this: there is such a duality for $H$-expansions in graphs if and only if $H$ is a planar graph (this includes the previous result for $H=K_3$). We consider vertex labelled graphs and minors and provide such a characterisation for $2$-connected labelled graphs $H$.
