Free hyperplane arrangements over arbitrary fields
In this paper, we study the class of free hyperplane arrangements. Specifically, we investigate the relations between freeness over a field of finite characteristic and freeness over $\mathbb{Q}$.

Classification of external Zonotopal algebras
In this paper we work with power algebras associated to hyperplane arrangements. There are three main types of these algebras, namely, external, central, and internal zonotopal algebras. We classify all external algebras up to isomorphism in terms of zonotopes. Also, we prove that unimodular external zonotopal algebras are in one to one correspondence with regular matroids. For the case of central algebras we formulate a conjecture.
On Dispersable Book Embeddings
In a dispersable book embedding, the vertices of a given graph $G$ must be ordered along a line l, called spine, and the edges of G must be drawn at different half-planes bounded by l, called pages of the book, such that: (i) no two edges of the same page cross, and (ii) the graphs induced by the edges of each page are 1-regular. The minimum number of pages needed by any dispersable book embedding of $G$ is referred to as the dispersable book thickness $dbt(G)$ of $G$. Graph $G$ is called dispersable if $dbt(G) = Δ(G)$ holds (note that $Δ(G) \leq dbt(G)$ always holds). Back in 1979, Bernhart and Kainen conjectured that any $k$-regular bipartite graph $G$ is dispersable, i.e., $dbt(G)=k$. In this paper, we disprove this conjecture for the cases $k=3$ (with a computer-aided proof), and $k=4$ (with a purely combinatorial proof). In particular, we show that the Gray graph, which is 3-regular and bipartite, has dispersable book thickness four, while the Folkman graph, which is 4-regular and bipartite, has dispersable book thickness five. On the positive side, we prove that 3-connected 3-regular bipartite planar graphs are dispersable, and conjecture that this property holds, even if 3-connectivity is relaxed.

Congruences involving binomial coefficients and Apéry-like numbers
Published in Publ. Math. Debrecen 96(2020), no.3-4, 315-346 • View Publication • BIB
For $n=0,1,2,\ldots$ let $W_n=\sum_{k=0}^{[n/3]}\binom{2k}k \binom{3k}k\binom n{3k}(-3)^{n-3k}$, where $[x]$ is the greatest integer not exceeding $x$. Then $\{W_n\}$ is an Apéry-like sequence. In this paper we deduce many congruences involving $\{W_n\}$, in particular we determine $\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\binom{2k}k\frac{W_k}{m^k}\pmod p$ for $m=-640332,-5292,-972,-108,-44,-27,-12,8,54,243$ by using binary quadratic forms, where $p>3$ is a prime. We also prove several congruences for generalized Apéry-like numbers, and pose 29 challenging conjectures on congruences involving binomial coefficients and Apéry-like numbers.

A sequent calculus for a semi-associative law
Published in Logical Methods in Computer Science, Volume 15, Issue 1 (February 5, 2019) lmcs:4406 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a sequent calculus with a simple restriction of Lambek's product rules that precisely captures the classical Tamari order, i.e., the partial order on fully-bracketed words (equivalently, binary trees) induced by a semi-associative law (equivalently, right rotation). We establish a focusing property for this sequent calculus (a strengthening of cut-elimination), which yields the following coherence theorem: every valid entailment in the Tamari order has exactly one focused derivation. We then describe two main applications of the coherence theorem, including: 1. A new proof of the lattice property for the Tamari order, and 2. A new proof of the Tutte-Chapoton formula for the number of intervals in the Tamari lattice $Y_n$.

A Ramsey theorem for biased graphs
A $biased\ graph$ is a pair $(G,\mathcal{B})$, where $G$ is a graph and $\mathcal{B}$ is a collection of `balanced' circuits of $G$ such that no $Θ$-subgraph of $G$ contains precisely two balanced circuits. We prove a Ramsey-type theorem, showing that if $(G,\mathcal{B})$ is a biased graph which $G$ is a very large complete graph, then $G$ contains a large complete subgraph $H$ such that the set of balanced cycles within $H$ has one of three specific, highly symmetric structures, all of which can be described naturally via group-labellings.
Generalized vector space partitions
Published in The Australasian Journal of Combinatorics. Vol. 73 (2019) Issue 1 . - pp. 162-178 • Search Publication
A vector space partition $\mathcal{P}$ in $\mathbb{F}_q^v$ is a set of subspaces such that every $1$-dimensional subspace of $\mathbb{F}_q^v$ is contained in exactly one element of $\mathcal{P}$. Replacing "every point" by "every $t$-dimensional subspace", we generalize this notion to vector space $t$-partitions and study their properties. There is a close connection to subspace codes and some problems are even interesting and unsolved for the set case $q=1$.

A random variant of the game of plates and olives
The game of plates and olives was originally formulated by Nicolaescu and encodes the evolution of the topology of the sublevel sets of Morse functions. We consider a random variant of this game. The process starts with an empty table. There are four different types of moves: (1) add a new plate to the table, (2) combine two plates and their olives onto one plate, removing the second plate from the table, (3) add an olive to a plate, and (4) remove an olive from a plate. We show that with high probability the number of olives is linear as the total number of moves goes to infinity. Furthermore, we prove that the number of olives is concentrated around its expectation.

Generalized Eulerian Triangles and Some Special Production Matrices
We show how some special production matrices may be used to define families of generalized Eulerian triangles. We furthermore show that these generalized Eulerian triangles are the coefficient arrays of polynomials which are the moments of families of orthogonal polynomials. Using the previously defined $\mathcal{T}$ transform, we associate these generalized Eulerian triangles to triangles defined by Catalan generating functions. Again, these new triangles are the coefficient arrays of polynomial moment sequences. The main tools used are the Sumudu transform, Jacobi continued fractions and Riordan arrays.

Correlation Functions as Nests of Self-Avoiding Paths
Published in J. Math. Sci., Vol. 238, No. 6 (2019), 779-792 • View Publication • BIB
We discuss connection between the XXZ Heisenberg spin chain in the limiting case of zero anisotropy and some aspects of enumerative combinatorics. The representation of the Bethe wave functions via the Schur functions allows to apply the theory of symmetric functions to calculation of the correlation functions. We provide a combinatorial derivation of the dynamical correlation functions of the projection operator in terms of nests of self-avoiding lattice paths.

The $1/k$-Eulerian Polynomials as Moments, via Exponential Riordan Arrays
Using the theory of exponential Riordan arrays, we show that the $1/k$-Eulerian polynomials are moments for a paramaterized family of orthogonal polynomials. In addition, we show that the related Savage-Viswanathan polynomials are also moments for appropriate families of orthogonal polynomials. We provide continued fraction ordinary generating functions and Hankel transforms for these moments, as well as the three-term recurrences for the corresponding orthogonal polynomials. We provide formulas for the $1/k$-Eulerian polynomials and the Savage-Viswanathan polynomials involving the Stirling numbers of the first and the second kind. Finally we show that the once-shifted polynomials are again moment sequences.
Dense Subgraphs in Random Graphs
For a constant $γ\in[0,1]$ and a graph $G$, let $ω_γ(G)$ be the largest integer $k$ for which there exists a $k$-vertex subgraph of $G$ with at least $γ\binom{k}{2}$ edges. We show that if $0<p<γ<1$ then $ω_γ(G_{n,p})$ is concentrated on a set of two integers. More precisely, with $α(γ,p)=γ\log\fracγ{p}+(1-γ)\log\frac{1-γ}{1-p}$, we show that $ω_γ(G_{n,p})$ is one of the two integers closest to $\frac{2}{α(γ,p)}\big(\log n-\log\log n+\log\frac{eα(γ,p)}{2}\big)+\frac{1}{2}$, with high probability. While this situation parallels that of cliques in random graphs, a new technique is required to handle the more complicated ways in which these "quasi-cliques" may overlap.
Extensions of partial cyclic orders and consecutive coordinate polytopes
Published in Ann. Henri Lebesgue, 3, 275-297, 2020 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce several classes of polytopes contained in $[0,1]^n$ and cut out by inequalities involving sums of consecutive coordinates. We show that the normalized volumes of these polytopes enumerate circular extensions of certain partial cyclic orders. Among other things this gives a new point of view on a question popularized by Stanley. We also provide a combinatorial interpretation of the Ehrhart $h^*$-polynomials of some of these polytopes in terms of descents of total cyclic orders. The Euler numbers, the Eulerian numbers and the Narayana numbers appear as special cases.

An optimization parameter for seriation of noisy data
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math 33(2) 10.1137 (2019) • View Publication • BIB
A square symmetric matrix is a Robinson similarity matrix if entries in its rows and columns are non-decreasing when moving towards the diagonal. A Robinson similarity matrix can be viewed as the affinity matrix between objects arranged in linear order, where objects closer together have higher affinity. We define a new parameter, $Γ_\max$, which measures how badly a given matrix fails to be Robinson similarity. Namely, a matrix is Robinson similarity precisely when its $Γ_\max$ attains zero, and a matrix with small $Γ_\max$ is close (in the normalized $\ell^1$-norm) to a Robinson similarity matrix. Moreover, both $Γ_\max$ and the Robinson similarity approximation can be computed in polynomial time. Thus, our parameter recognizes Robinson similarity matrices which are perturbed by noise, and can therefore be a useful tool in the problem of seriation of noisy data.

Bounds on the cardinality of restricted sumsets in $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$
In this paper we present a procedure which allows to transform a subset $A$ of $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$ into a set $ A'$ such that $ |2\hspace{0.15cm}\widehat{} A'|\leq|2\hspace{0.15cm}\widehat{} A | $, where $2\hspace{0.15cm}\widehat{} A$ is defined to be the set $\left\{a+b:a\neq b,\;a,b\in A\right\}$. From this result, we get some lower bounds for $ |2\hspace{0.15cm}\widehat{} A| $. Finally, we give some remarks related to the problem for which sets $A\subset \mathbb{Z}_{p}$ we have the equality $|2\hspace{0.15cm}\widehat{} A|=2|A|-1$.

Induced nets and Hamiltonicity of claw-free graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The connected graph of degree sequence 3,3,3,1,1,1 is called a net, and the vertices of degree 1 in a net is called its endvertices. Broersma conjectured in 1993 that a 2-connected graph G with no induced K_{1,3} is hamiltonian if every endvertex of each induced net of G has degree at least (|V(G)|-2)/3. In this paper we prove this conjecture in the affirmative.
On the Tits cone of a Weyl groupoid
We translate the axioms of a Weyl groupoid with (not necessarily finite) root system in terms of arrangements. The result is a correspondence between Weyl groupoids permitting a root system and Tits arrangements satisfying an integrality condition which we call the crystallographic property.

Ordinary lines in space
We prove that if a finite point set in real space does not have too many points on a plane, then it spans a quadratic number of ordinary lines. This answers the real case of a question of Basit, Dvir, Saraf, and Wolf. It shows that there is a significant difference in terms of ordinary lines between planar point sets, which may span a linear number of ordinary lines, and truly three-dimensional point sets. Our proof uses a projection argument of Kelly combined with a theorem of Beck on the number of spanned lines of a planar point set.

Determinants, Choices and Combinatorics
We prove a formula which generalizes both Onn's colorful determinantal formula, related to Rota's basis conjecture, and Svrtan's $n!$ formula, related to the Atiyah-Sutcliffe problem. In some cases, our formula allows us to prove some results similar in spirit to the statement of Rota's basis conjecture. We prove such a result using Svrtan's $n!$ formula, generalizing one of Svrtan's arguments to a combinatorial setting.

Colouring set families without monochromatic k-chains
Published • View Publication • BIB
A coloured version of classic extremal problems dates back to Erdős and Rothschild, who in 1974 asked which $n$-vertex graph has the maximum number of 2-edge-colourings without monochromatic triangles. They conjectured that the answer is simply given by the largest triangle-free graph. Since then, this new class of coloured extremal problems has been extensively studied by various researchers. In this paper we pursue the Erdős--Rothschild versions of Sperner's Theorem, the classic result in extremal set theory on the size of the largest antichain in the Boolean lattice, and Erdős' extension to $k$-chain-free families. Given a family $\mathcal{F}$ of subsets of $[n]$, we define an $(r,k)$-colouring of $\mathcal{F}$ to be an $r$-colouring of the sets without any monochromatic $k$-chains $F_1 \subset F_2 \subset \dots \subset F_k$. We prove that for $n$ sufficiently large in terms of $k$, the largest $k$-chain-free families also maximise the number of $(2,k)$-colourings. We also show that the middle level, $\binom{[n]}{\lfloor n/2 \rfloor}$, maximises the number of $(3,2)$-colourings, and give asymptotic results on the maximum possible number of $(r,k)$-colourings whenever $r(k-1)$ is divisible by three.
