Equivariant Algebraic Morse Theory
In this paper we develop Algebraic Morse Theory for the case where a group acts on a free chain complex. Algebraic Morse Theory is an adaption of Discrete Morse Theory to free chain complexes.

A Note on the DP-Chromatic Number of Complete Bipartite Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
DP-coloring (also called correspondence coloring) is a generalization of list coloring recently introduced by Dvořák and Postle. Several known bounds for the list chromatic number of a graph $G$, $χ_\ell(G)$, also hold for the DP-chromatic number of $G$, $χ_{DP}(G)$. On the other hand, there are several properties of the DP-chromatic number that shows that it differs with the list chromatic number. In this note we show one such property. It is well known that $χ_\ell (K_{k,t}) = k+1$ if and only if $t \geq k^k$. We show that $χ_{DP} (K_{k,t}) = k+1$ if $t \geq 1 + (k^k/k!)(\log(k!)+1)$, and we show that $χ_{DP} (K_{k,t}) < k+1$ if $t < k^k/k!$.

A study on resistance matrix of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this article we consider resistance matrix of a connected graph. For unweighted graph we study some necessary and sufficient conditions for resistance regular graphs. Also we find some relationship between Laplacian matrix and resistance matrix in case of weighted graphs where all edge weights are positive definite matrices of given order.
Saturated Fully Leafed Tree-Like Polyforms and Polycubes
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present recursive formulas giving the maximal number of leaves in tree-like polyforms living in two-dimensional regular lattices and in tree-like polycubes in the three-dimensional cubic lattice. We call these tree-like polyforms and polycubes \emph{fully leafed}. The proof relies on a combinatorial algorithm that enumerates rooted directed trees that we call abundant. In the last part, we concentrate on the particular case of polyforms and polycubes, that we call \emph{saturated}, which is the family of fully leafed structures that maximize the ratio $\mbox{(number of leaves)}/\mbox{ (number of cells)}$. In the polyomino case, we present a bijection between the set of saturated tree-like polyominoes of size $4k+1$ and the set of tree-like polyominoes of size $k$. We exhibit a similar bijection between the set of saturated tree-like polycubes of size $41k+28$ and a family of polycubes, called $4$-trees, of size $3k+2$.
On difference graphs and the local dimension of posets
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 86, 1--13, 2020 • View Publication • BIB
The dimension of a partially-ordered set (poset), introduced by Dushnik and Miller (1941), has been studied extensively in the literature. Recently, Ueckerdt (2016) proposed a variation called local dimension which makes use of partial linear extensions. While local dimension is bounded above by dimension, they can be arbitrarily far apart as the dimension of the standard example is $n$ while its local dimension is only $3$. Hiraguchi (1955) proved that the maximum dimension of a poset of order $n$ is $n/2$. However, we find a very different result for local dimension, proving a bound of $Θ(n/\log n)$. This follows from connections with covering graphs using difference graphs which are bipartite graphs whose vertices in a single class have nested neighborhoods. We also prove that the local dimension of the $n$-dimensional Boolean lattice is $Ω(n/\log n)$ and make progress toward resolving a version of the removable pair conjecture for local dimension.

An equivalent formulation of chromatic quasi-polynomials
Published in Discrete Mathematics, 343 (2020) • View Publication • BIB
Given a central integral arrangement, the reduction of the arrangement modulo positive integers $q$ gives rise to a subgroup arrangement in $(\mathbb{Z}/q\mathbb{Z})^\ell$. Kamiya-Takemura-Terao (2008) introduced the notion of characteristic quasi-polynomials, which uses to evaluate the cardinality of the complement of the subgroup arrangement. Chen-Wang (2012) found a similar but more general setting that replacing the integral arrangement by its restriction to a subspace of $\mathbb{R}^\ell$, and evaluating the cardinality of the $q$-reduction complement will also lead to a quasi-polynomial in $q$. On an independent study, Brändén-Moci (2014) defined the so-called chromatic quasi-polynomial, and initiated the study of $q$-colorings on a finite list of elements in a finitely generated abelian group. The main purpose of this paper is to verify that the Chen-Wang's quasi-polynomial and the Brändén-Moci's chromatic quasi-polynomial are equivalent in the sense that the quasi-polynomials enumerate the cardinalities of isomorphic sets.

The maximum $p$-Spectral Radius of Hypergraphs with $m$ Edges
For $r\geq 2$ and $p\geq 1$, the $p$-spectral radius of an $r$-uniform hypergraph $H=(V,E)$ on $n$ vertices is defined to be $$ρ_p(H)=\max_{{\bf x}\in \mathbb{R}^n: \|{\bf x}\|_p=1}r \cdot \!\!\!\! \sum_{\{i_1,i_2,\ldots, i_r\}\in E(H)} x_{i_1}x_{i_2}\cdots x_{i_r},$$ where the maximum is taken over all ${\bf x\in \mathbb{R}^n}$ with the $p$-norm equals 1. In this paper, we proved for any integer $r\geq 2$, and any real $p\geq 1$, and any $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$ with $m={s\choose r}$ edges (for some real $s\geq r-1$), we have $$λ_p(H)\leq \frac{rm}{s^{r/p}}.$$ The equality holds if and only if $s$ is an integer and $H$ is the complete $r$-uniform hypergraph $K^r_s$ with some possible isolated vertices added. Thus, we completely settled a conjecture of Nikiforov. In particular, we settled all the principal cases of the Frankl-Füredi's Conjecture on the Lagrangians of $r$-uniform hypergraphs for all $r\geq 2$.
Proving a conjecture on chromatic polynomials by counting the number of acyclic orientations
Published • View Publication • BIB
The chromatic polynomial $P(G,x)$ of a graph $G$ of order $n$ can be expressed as $\sum\limits_{i=1}^n(-1)^{n-i}a_{i}x^i$, where $a_i$ is interpreted as the number of broken-cycle free spanning subgraphs of $G$ with exactly $i$ components. The parameter $ε(G)=\sum\limits_{i=1}^n (n-i)a_i/\sum\limits_{i=1}^n a_i$ is the mean size of a broken-cycle-free spanning subgraph of $G$. In this article, we confirm and strengthen a conjecture proposed by Lundow and Markström in 2006 that $ε(T_n)< ε(G)<ε(K_n)$ holds for any connected graph $G$ of order $n$ which is neither the complete graph $K_n$ nor a tree $T_n$ of order $n$. The most crucial step of our proof is to obtain the interpretation of all $a_i$'s by the number of acyclic orientations of $G$.

On a generalization of Solomon-Terao formula for subspace arrangements
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate in this paper a generalization of Solomon-Terao formula for central equidimensional subspace arrangements. We introduce generalized Solomon-Terao functions based on the Hilbert-Poincaré series of the modules of multi-logarithmic forms and logarithmic multi-residues. We show that as in the case of hyperplane arrangements, these Solomon-Terao functions are polynomial. We then prove that if the Solomon-Terao polynomial of the modules of multi-residues satisfies a certain property, then this polynomial is related to the characteristic polynomial of the subspace arrangement. In particular, we prove that this generalized Solomon-Terao formula holds for any line arrangement of any codimension.

Double Character Sums with Intervals and Arbitrary Sets in Finite Fields

We obtain a new bound on certain double sums of multiplicative characters improving the range of several previous results. This improvement comes from new bounds on the number of collinear triples in finite fields, which is a classical object of study of additive combinatorics.
On essentially 4-edge-connected cubic bricks
Published • View Publication • BIB
Lovász (1987) proved that every matching covered graph $G$ may be uniquely decomposed into a list of bricks (nonbipartite) and braces (bipartite); we let $b(G)$ denote the number of bricks. An edge $e$ is removable if $G-e$ is also matching covered; furthermore, $e$ is $b$-invariant if $b(G-e)=1$, and $e$ is quasi-$b$-invariant if $b(G-e)=2$. (Each edge of the Petersen graph is quasi-$b$-invariant.) A brick $G$ is near-bipartite if it has a pair of edges $\{e,f\}$ so that $G-e-f$ is matching covered and bipartite; such a pair $\{e,f\}$ is a removable doubleton. (Each of $K_4$ and the triangular prism $\overline{C_6}$ has three removable doubletons.) Carvalho, Lucchesi and Murty (2002) proved a conjecture of Lovász which states that every brick, distinct from $K_4$, $\overline{C_6}$ and the Petersen graph, has a $b$-invariant edge. A cubic graph is essentially $4$-edge-connected if it is $2$-edge-connected and if its only $3$-cuts are the trivial ones; it is well-known that each such graph is either a brick or a brace; we provide a graph-theoretical proof of this fact. We prove that if $G$ is any essentially $4$-edge-connected cubic brick then its edge-set may be partitioned into three (possibly empty) sets: (i) edges that participate in a removable doubleton, (ii) $b$-invariant edges, and (iii) quasi-$b$-invariant edges; our Main Theorem states that if $G$ has two adjacent quasi-$b$-invariant edges, say $e_1$ and $e_2$, then either $G$ is the Petersen graph or the (near-bipartite) Cubeplex graph, or otherwise, each edge of $G$ (distinct from $e_1$ and $e_2$) is $b$-invariant. As a corollary, we deduce that each essentially $4$-edge-connected cubic non-near-bipartite brick $G$, distinct from the Petersen graph, has at least $|V(G)|$ $b$-invariant edges.

Nilspace factors for general uniformity seminorms, cubic exchangeability and limits
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study a class of measure-theoretic objects that we call cubic couplings, on which there is a common generalization of the Gowers norms and the Host-Kra seminorms. Our main result yields a complete structural description of cubic couplings, using nilspaces. We give three applications. Firstly, we describe the characteristic factors of Host-Kra type seminorms for measure-preserving actions of countable nilpotent groups. This yields an extension of the structure theorem of Host and Kra. Secondly, we characterize sequences of random variables with a property that we call cubic exchangeability. These are sequences indexed by the infinite discrete cube, such that for every integer $k\geq 0$ the joint distribution's marginals on affine subcubes of dimension $k$ are all equal. In particular, our result gives a description, in terms of compact nilspaces, of a related exchangeability property considered by Austin, inspired by a problem of Aldous. Finally, using nilspaces we obtain limit objects for sequences of functions on compact abelian groups (more generally on compact nilspaces) such that the densities of certain patterns in these functions converge. The paper thus proposes a measure-theoretic framework on which the area of higher-order Fourier analysis can be based, and which yields new applications of this area in a unified way in ergodic theory and arithmetic combinatorics.

Symmetric Hadamard matrices of orders 268, 412, 436 and 604
Published in Informatsionno-upravliaiushchie sistemy; Information and Control Systems; 2018; 4: 2-8 • View Publication • BIB
We construct many symmetric Hadamard matrices of small order by using the so called propus construction. The necessary difference families are constructed by restricting the search to the families which admit a nontrivial multiplier. Our main result is that we have constructed, for the first time, symmetric Hadamard matrices of order 268, 412, 436 and 604.

Enumeration of super-strong Wilf equivalence classes of permutations in the generalized factor order
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 21 no. 2, Permutation Patters 2018, Permutation Patterns (November 11, 2019) dmtcs:5055 • View Publication • BIB
Super-strong Wilf equivalence classes of the symmetric group ${\mathcal S}_n$ on $n$ letters, with respect to the generalized factor order, were shown by Hadjiloucas, Michos and Savvidou (2018) to be in bijection with pyramidal sequences of consecutive differences. In this article we enumerate the latter by giving recursive formulae in terms of a two-dimensional analogue of non-interval permutations. As a by-product, we obtain a recursively defined set of representatives of super-strong Wilf equivalence classes in ${\mathcal S}_n$. We also provide a connection between super-strong Wilf equivalence and the geometric notion of shift equivalence---originally defined by Fidler, Glasscock, Miceli, Pantone, and Xu (2018) for words---by showing that an alternate way to characterize super-strong Wilf equivalence for permutations is by keeping only rigid shifts in the definition of shift equivalence. This allows us to fully describe shift equivalence classes for permutations of size $n$ and enumerate them, answering the corresponding problem posed by Fidler, Glasscock, Miceli, Pantone, and Xu (2018).

The kernel of chromatic quasisymmetric functions on graphs and hypergraphic polytopes
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the chromatic symmetric function on graphs, and show that its kernel is spanned by the modular relations. We generalize this result to the chromatic quasisymmetric function on hypergraphic polytopes, a family of generalized permutahedra. We use this description of the kernel of the chromatic symmetric function to find other graph invariants that may help us tackle the tree conjecture.

The Farey Maps Modulo N
The Farey map is the universal triangular map whose automorphism group is the classical modular group. We study the quotients of the Farey map by the principal congruence subgroups of the modular group. We also study the structure of the underlying graphs of these quotients.

Combinatorial, Bakry-Émery, Ollivier's Ricci curvature notions and their motivation from Riemannian geometry
In this survey, we study three different notions of curvature that are defined on graphs, namely, combinatorial curvature, Bakry-Émery curvature, and Ollivier's Ricci curvature. For each curvature notion, the definition and its motivation from Riemannian geometry will be explained. Moreover, we bring together some global results and geometric concepts in Riemannian geometry that are related to curvature (e.g. Bonnet-Myers theorem, Laplacian operator, Lichnerowicz theorem, Cheeger constant), and then compare them to the discrete analogues in some (if not all) of the discrete curvature notions. The structure of this survey is as follows: the first chapter is dedicated to relevant background in Riemannian geometry. Each following chapter is focussing on one of the discrete curvature notions. This survay is an MSc dissertation in Mathematical Sciences at Durham University.

Many odd zeta values are irrational
Published in Compositio Math. 155 (2019) 938-952 • View Publication • BIB
Building upon ideas of the second and third authors, we prove that at least $2^{(1-\varepsilon)\frac{\log s}{\log\log s}}$ values of the Riemann zeta function at odd integers between 3 and $s$ are irrational, where $\varepsilon$ is any positive real number and $s$ is large enough in terms of $\varepsilon$. This lower bound is asymptotically larger than any power of $\log s$; it improves on the bound $\frac{1-\varepsilon}{1+\log2}\log s$ that follows from the Ball--Rivoal theorem. The proof is based on construction of several linear forms in odd zeta values with related coefficients.

Projective duals to algebraic and tropical hypersurfaces
Published in P. London Math. Soc. 119(5) (2019) pp. 1234-1278 • View Publication • BIB
We study a tropical analogue of the projective dual variety of a hypersurface. When $X$ is a curve in $\mathbb{P}^2$ or a surface in $\mathbb{P}^3$, we provide an explicit description of $\text{Trop}(X^*)$ in terms of $\text{Trop}(X)$, as long as $\text{Trop}(X)$ is smooth and satisfies a mild genericity condition. As a consequence, when $X$ is a curve we describe the transformation of Newton polygons under projective duality, and recover classical formulas for the degree of a dual plane curve. For higher dimensional hypersurfaces $X$, we give a partial description of $\text{Trop}(X^*)$.
