Weak orders on symmetric groups and posets of support $τ$-tilting modules
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give a necessary and sufficient condition for that the support $τ$-tilting poset of a finite dimensional algebra is isomorphic to the poset of symmetric group with weak order. Moreover we show that there are infinitely many finite dimensional algebras whose support $τ$-tilting posets are isomorphic to the poset of symmetric group with weak order.

The Erdős-Rothschild problem on edge-colourings with forbidden monochromatic cliques
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathbf{k} := (k_1,\dots,k_s)$ be a sequence of natural numbers. For a graph $G$, let $F(G;\mathbf{k})$ denote the number of colourings of the edges of $G$ with colours $1,\dots,s$ such that, for every $c \in \{1,\dots,s\}$, the edges of colour $c$ contain no clique of order $k_c$. Write $F(n;\mathbf{k})$ to denote the maximum of $F(G;\mathbf{k})$ over all graphs $G$ on $n$ vertices. This problem was first considered by Erdős and Rothschild in 1974, but it has been solved only for a very small number of non-trivial cases. We prove that, for every $\mathbf{k}$ and $n$, there is a complete multipartite graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with $F(G;\mathbf{k}) = F(n;\mathbf{k})$. Also, for every $\mathbf{k}$ we construct a finite optimisation problem whose maximum is equal to the limit of $\log_2 F(n;\mathbf{k})/{n\choose 2}$ as $n$ tends to infinity. Our final result is a stability theorem for complete multipartite graphs $G$, describing the asymptotic structure of such $G$ with $F(G;\mathbf{k}) = F(n;\mathbf{k}) \cdot 2^{o(n^2)}$ in terms of solutions to the optimisation problem.

Selectively Balancing Unit Vectors
Published in Combinatorica 38, 67-74 (2018) • View Publication • BIB
A set $U$ of unit vectors is selectively balancing if one can find two disjoint subsets $U^+$ and $U^-$, not both empty, such that the Euclidean distance between the sum of $U^+$ and the sum of $U^-$ is smaller than $1$. We prove that the minimum number of unit vectors that guarantee a selectively balancing set in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is asymptotically $\frac{1}{2} n \log n$.

A user's guide to the topological Tverberg conjecture
Published in Russian Math. Surveys, 73:2 (2018), 323-353 • View Publication • BIB
The topological Tverberg conjecture was considered a central unsolved problem of topological combinatorics. The conjecture asserts that for any integers $r,d>1$ and any continuous map $f:Δ\to\mathbb R^d$ of the $(d+1)(r-1)$-dimensional simplex there are pairwise disjoint faces $σ_1,\ldots,σ_r\subsetΔ$ such that $f(σ_1)\cap \ldots \cap f(σ_r)\ne\emptyset$. The conjecture was proved for a prime power $r$. Recently counterexamples for other $r$ were found. Analogously, the $r$-fold van Kampen-Flores conjecture holds for a prime power $r$ but does not hold for other $r$. The arguments form a beautiful and fruitful interplay between combinatorics, algebra and topology. We present a simplified exposition accessible to non-specialists in the area. We also mention some recent developments and open problems.

A new characterization of ultraspherical, Hermite, and Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind

We show that the only polynomial sets with a generating function of the form F (xt -- R(t)) and satisfying a three-term recursion relation are the monomial set and the rescaled ultraspherical, Hermite, and Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind.

Graph limits of random graphs from a subset of connected $k$-trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
For any set $Ω$ of non-negative integers such that $\{0,1\}\subseteq Ω$ and $\{0,1\}\ne Ω$, we consider a random $Ω$-$k$-tree ${\sf G}_{n,k}$ that is uniformly selected from all connected $k$-trees of $(n+k)$ vertices where the number of $(k+1)$-cliques that contain any fixed $k$-clique belongs to $Ω$. We prove that ${\sf G}_{n,k}$, scaled by $(kH_{k}σ_Ω)/(2\sqrt{n})$ where $H_{k}$ is the $k$-th Harmonic number and $σ_Ω>0$, converges to the Continuum Random Tree $\mathcal{T}_{\sf e}$. Furthermore, we prove the local convergence of the rooted random $Ω$-$k$-tree ${\sf G}_{n,k}^{\circ}$ to an infinite but locally finite random $Ω$-$k$-tree ${\sf G}_{\infty,k}$.

Canonical Horizontal Visibility Graphs are uniquely determined by their degree sequence
Published • View Publication • BIB
Horizontal visibility graphs (HVGs) are graphs constructed in correspondence with number sequences that have been introduced and explored recently in the context of graph-theoretical time series analysis. In most of the cases simple measures based on the degree sequence (or functionals of these such as entropies over degree and joint degree distributions) appear to be highly informative features for automatic classification and provide nontrivial information on the associated dynam- ical process, working even better than more sophisticated topological metrics. It is thus an open question why these seemingly simple measures capture so much information. Here we prove that, under suitable conditions, there exist a bijection between the adjacency matrix of an HVG and its degree sequence, and we give an explicit construction of such bijection. As a consequence, under these conditions HVGs are unigraphs and the degree sequence fully encapsulates all the information of these graphs, thereby giving a plausible reason for its apparently unreasonable effectiveness.
Quantum State Transfer on Coronas
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, vol. 24, issue 2, P24, 2017 • View Publication • BIB
We study state transfer in quantum walk on graphs relative to the adjacency matrix. Our motivation is to understand how the addition of pendant subgraphs affect state transfer. For two graphs $G$ and $H$, the Frucht-Harary corona product $G \circ H$ is obtained by taking $|G|$ copies of the cone $K_{1} + H$ and by connecting the conical vertices according to $G$. Our work explores conditions under which the corona $G \circ H$ exhibits state transfer. We also describe new families of graphs with state transfer based on the corona product. Some of these constructions provide a generalization of related known results.
Alternator Coins
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a new type of coin: \textit{the alternator}. The alternator can pretend to be either a real or a fake coin (which is lighter than a real one). Each time it is put on a balance scale it switches between pretending to be either a real coin or a fake one. In this paper, we solve the following problem: You are given $N$ coins that look identical, but one of them is the alternator. All real coins weigh the same. You have a balance scale which you can use to find the alternator. What is the smallest number of weighings that guarantees that you will find the alternator?

Compatible polynomials and edgewise subdivisions
In this paper we answer a question posed by C. A. Athanasiadis. Namely, we prove that the local $h$-polynomial of the $r$th edgewise subdivision of the $(n-1)$-dimensional simplex $2^V$ has only real zeros. In doing so we find a tool, using compatible polynomials, that can be used to check if polynomials in certain types of families of polynomials have only real zeros.

Multiple list colouring of planar graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper proves that for each positive integer $m$, there is a planar graph $G$ which is not $(4m+\lfloor \frac{2m-1}{9}\rfloor,m)$-choosable. Then we pose some conjectures concerning multiple list colouring of planar graphs.

Colored operads, series on colored operads, and combinatorial generating systems
Published in Discrete Mathematics, 342, Issue 6, 1624--1657, 2019 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce bud generating systems, which are used for combinatorial generation. They specify sets of various kinds of combinatorial objects, called languages. They can emulate context-free grammars, regular tree grammars, and synchronous grammars, allowing us to work with all these generating systems in a unified way. The theory of bud generating systems uses colored operads. Indeed, an object is generated by a bud generating system if it satisfies a certain equation in a colored operad. To compute the generating series of the languages of bud generating systems, we introduce formal power series on colored operads and several operations on these. Series on colored operads are crucial to express the languages specified by bud generating systems and allow us to enumerate combinatorial objects with respect to some statistics. Some examples of bud generating systems are constructed; in particular to specify some sorts of balanced trees and to obtain recursive formulas enumerating these.

$K_{4}$-Minor-Free Induced Subgraphs of Sparse Connected Graphs
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math., 32(1), 123-147, 2018 • View Publication • BIB
We prove that every connected graph $G$ with $m$ edges contains a set $X$ of at most $\frac{3}{16}(m + 1)$ vertices such that $G-X$ has no $K_4$ minor, or equivalently, has treewidth at most $2$. This bound is best possible. Connectivity is essential: If $G$ is not connected then only a bound of $\frac{1}{5}m$ can be guaranteed.

Discrete Morse theory for the barycentric subdivision
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $F$ be a discrete Morse function on a simplicial complex $L$. We construct a discrete Morse function $Δ(F)$ on the barycentric subdivision $Δ(L)$. The constructed function $Δ(F)$ "behaves the same way" as $F$, i. e. has the same number of critical simplexes and the same gradient path structure.

The Local $h$-Polynomials of Cluster Subdivisions Have Only Real Zeros
Published • View Publication • BIB
Athanasiadis raised the question whether the local $h$-polynomials of type $A$ cluster subdivisions have only real zeros. In this paper, we confirm this conjecture and prove the real-rootedness of local $h$-polynomials for all the other Cartan--Killing types. Our proofs mainly involve multiplier sequences and Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind.
Restricted growth function patterns and statistics
Published • View Publication • BIB
A restricted growth function (RGF) of length n is a sequence w = w_1 w_2 ... w_n of positive integers such that w_1 = 1 and w_i is at most 1 + max{w_1,..., w_{i-1}} for i at least 2. RGFs are of interest because they are in natural bijection with set partitions of {1, 2, ..., n}. RGF w avoids RGF v if there is no subword of w which standardizes to v. We study the generating functions sum_{w in R_n(v)} q^{st(w)} where R_n(v) is the set of RGFs of length n which avoid v and st(w) is any of the four fundamental statistics on RGFs defined by Wachs and White. These generating functions exhibit interesting connections with integer partitions and two-colored Motzkin paths, as well as noncrossing and nonnesting set partitions.

A t-generalization for Schubert Representatives of the Affine Grassmannian
Published in DMTCS proc. AS, 2013, 1125-1136 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce two families of symmetric functions with an extra parameter t that specialize to Schubert representatives for cohomology and homology of the affine Grassmannian when t = 1. The families are defined by a statistic on combinatorial objects associated to the type-A affine Weyl group and their transition matrix with Hall-Littlewood polynomials is t-positive. We conjecture that one family is the set of k-atoms.

The maximum size of a partial spread in a finite projective space
Let $n$ and $t$ be positive integers with $t<n$, and let $q$ be a prime power. A $\textit{partial $(t-1)$-spread}$ of ${\rm PG}(n-1,q)$ is a set of $(t-1)$-dimensional subspaces of ${\rm PG}(n-1,q)$ that are pairwise disjoint. Let $r=n\mbox{ mod } t$ and $0\leq r<t$. We prove that if $t>(q^r-1)/(q-1)$, then the maximum size, i.e., cardinality, of a partial $(t-1)$-spread of ${\rm PG}(n-1,q)$ is $(q^n-q^{t+r})/(q^t-1)+1$. This essentially settles a main open problem in this area. Prior to this result, this maximum size was only known for $r\in\{0,1\}$ and for $r=q=2$.
