Coincidence among families of mesh patterns
Two mesh patterns are coincident if they are avoided by the same set of permutations. In this paper, we provide necessary conditions for this coincidence, which include having the same set of enclosed diagonals. This condition is sufficient to prove coincidence of vincular patterns, although it is not enough to guarantee coincidence of bivincular patterns. In addition, we provide a generalization of the Shading Lemma (Hilmarsson et al.), a result that examined when a square could be added to the mesh of a pattern.
Sublinear extensions of polygons
Every convex polygon with $n$ vertices is a linear projection of a higher-dimensional polytope with at most $147\,n^{2/3}$ facets.

Motivated by recent extensive studies on Wenger graphs, we introduce a new infinite class of bipartite graphs of the similar type, called linearized Wenger graphs. The spectrum, diameter and girth of these linearized Wenger graphs are determined.
Conditions for Discrete Equidecomposability of Polygons
Two rational polygons $P$ and $Q$ are said to be discretely equidecomposable if there exists a piecewise affine-unimodular bijection (equivalently, a piecewise affine-linear bijection that preserves the integer lattice $\mathbb{Z} \times \mathbb{Z}$) from $P$ to $Q$. In [TW14], we developed an invariant for rational finite discrete equidecomposability known as weight. Here we extend this program with a necessary and sufficient condition for rational finite discrete equidecomposability. We close with an algorithm for detecting and constructing equidecomposability relations between rational polygons $P$ and $Q$.

Motivated by questions from Ehrhart theory, we present new results on discrete equidecomposability. In this paper, we primarily study a particular version of this notion which we call rational finite discrete equidecomposability. We construct triangles that are Ehrhart equivalent but not rationally finitely discretely equidecomposable, thus providing a partial negative answer to a question of Haase--McAllister on whether Ehrhart equivalence implies discrete equidecomposability. Surprisingly, if we delete an edge from each of these triangles, there exists an infinite rational discrete equidecomposability relation between them. Our final section addresses the topic of infinite equidecomposability with concrete examples and a potential setting for further investigation of this phenomenon.
Hyperbolic polynomials and the Marcus-Spielman-Srivastava theorem

Recently Marcus, Spielman and Srivastava gave a spectacular proof of a theorem which implies a positive solution to the Kadison-Singer problem. We extend (and slightly sharpen) this theorem to the realm of hyperbolic polynomials. A benefit of the extension is that the proof becomes coherent in its general form, and fits naturally in the theory of hyperbolic polynomials. We also study the sharpness of the bound in the theorem, and in the final section we describe how the hyperbolic Marcus-Spielman-Srivastava theorem may be interpreted in terms of strong Rayleigh measures. We use this to derive sufficient conditions for a weak half-plane property matroid to have k disjoint bases.
This work is based on notes from a graduate course focused on hyperbolic polynomials and the recent papers of Marcus, Spielman and Srivastava, given by the author at the Royal Institute of Technology (Stockholm) in the fall of 2013.

In this paper, we prove a local limit theorem for the distribution of the number of triangles in the Erdos-Renyi random graph $G(n,p)$, where $p \in (0,1)$ is a fixed constant. Our proof is based on bounding the characteristic function $ψ(t)$ of the number of triangles, and uses several different conditioning arguments for handling different ranges of $t$.

We introduce a class of sequences, defined by means of partial Bell polynomials, that contains a basis for the space of linear recurrence sequences with constant coefficients as well as other well-known sequences like Catalan and Motzkin. For the family of `Bell sequences' considered in this paper, we give a general multifold convolution formula and illustrate our result with a few explicit examples.
Characterizing forbidden pairs for hamiltonian squares

The square of a graph is obtained by adding additional edges joining all pair of vertices of distance two in the original graph. Particularly, if $C$ is a hamiltonian cycle of a graph $G$, then the square of $C$ is called a hamiltonian square of $G$. In this paper, we characterize all possible forbidden pairs, which implies the containment of a hamiltonian square, in a 4-connected graph. The connectivity condition is necessary as, except $K_3$ and $K_4$, the square of a cycle is always 4-connected.
Locality of connective constants

The connective constant $μ(G)$ of a quasi-transitive graph $G$ is the exponential growth rate of the number of self-avoiding walks from a given origin. We prove a locality theorem for connective constants, namely, that the connective constants of two graphs are close in value whenever the graphs agree on a large ball around the origin (and a further condition is satisfied). The proof exploits a generalized bridge decomposition of self-avoiding walks, which is valid subject to the assumption that the underlying graph is quasi-transitive and possesses a so-called unimodular graph height function.
Highly symmetric matroids, the strong Rayleigh property, and sums of squares
We investigate the strong Rayleigh property of matroids for which the basis enumerating polynomial is invariant under a Young subgroup of the symmetric group on the ground set. In general, the Grace-Walsh-Szegő theorem can be used to simplify the problem. When the Young subgroup has only two orbits, such a matroid is strongly Rayleigh if and only if an associated univariate polynomial has only real roots. When this polynomial is quadratic we get an explicit structural criterion for the strong Rayleigh property. Finally, if one of the orbits has rank two then the matroid is strongly Rayleigh if and only if the Rayleigh difference of any two points on this line is in fact a sum of squares.
Local $h$-polynomials, invariants of subdivisions, and mixed Ehrhart theory

There are natural polynomial invariants of polytopes and lattice polytopes coming from enumerative combinatorics and Ehrhart theory, namely the $h$- and $h^*$-polynomials, respectively. In this paper, we study their generalization to subdivisions and lattice subdivisions of polytopes. By abstracting constructions in mixed Hodge theory, we introduce multivariable polynomials which specialize to the $h$-, $h^*$- polynomials. These polynomials, the mixed $h$-polynomial and the (refined) limit mixed $h^*$-polynomial have rich symmetry, non-negativity, and unimodality properties, which both refine known properties of the classical polynomials, and reveal new structure. For example, we prove a lower bound theorem for a related invariant called the local $h^*$-polynomial. We introduce our polynomials by developing a very general formalism for studying subdivisions of Eulerian posets that extends the work of Stanley, Brenti and Athanasiadis on local $h$-vectors. In particular, we prove a conjecture of Nill and Schepers, and answer a question of Athanasiadis.
On Perfect and Quasiperfect Domination in Graphs
A subset $S\subseteq V$ in a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a $k$-quasiperfect dominating set (for $k\geq 1$) if every vertex not in $S$ is adjacent to at least one and at most $k$ vertices in $S$. The cardinality of a minimum $k$-quasiperfect dominating set in $G$ is denoted by $γ_ {\stackrel{}{1k}}(G)$. Those sets were first introduced by Chellali et al. (2013) as a generalization of the perfect domination concept and allow us to construct a decreasing chain of quasiperfect dominating numbers $ n \ge γ_ {\stackrel{}{11}}(G) \ge γ_ {\stackrel{}{12}}(G)\ge \ldots \ge γ_ {\stackrel{}{1Δ}}(G)=γ(G)$ in order to indicate how far is $G$ from being perfectly dominated. In this paper we study properties, existence and realization of graphs for which the chain is short, that is, $γ_ {\stackrel{}{12}}(G)=γ(G)$. Among them, one can find cographs, claw-free graphs and graphs with extremal values of $Δ(G)$.

We consider shifts of a set $A\subseteq\mathbb{N}$ by elements from another set $B\subseteq\mathbb{N}$, and prove intersection properties according to the relative asymptotic size of $A$ and $B$. A consequence of our main theorem is the following: If $A=\{a_n\}$ is such that $a_n=o(n^{k/k-1})$, then the $k$-recurrence set $R_k(A)=\{x\mid |A\cap(A+x)|\ge k\}$ contains the distance sets of arbitrarily large finite sets.
Linial arrangements and local binary search trees
We study the set of NBC sets (no broken circuit sets) of the Linial arrangement and deduce a constructive bijection to the set of local binary search trees. We then generalize this construction to two families of Linial type arrangements for which the bijections are with some $k$-ary labelled trees that we introduce for this purpose.

The harmonic numbers $H_n=\sum_{0<k\le n}1/k\ (n=0,1,2,\ldots)$ play important roles in mathematics. Let $p>3$ be a prime. With helps of some combinatorial identities, we establish the following two new congruences: $$\sum_{k=1}^{p-1}\frac{\binom{2k}k}kH_k\equiv\frac13\left(\frac p3\right)B_{p-2}\left(\frac13\right)\pmod{p}$$ and $$\sum_{k=1}^{p-1}\frac{\binom{2k}k}kH_{2k}\equiv\frac7{12}\left(\frac p3\right)B_{p-2}\left(\frac13\right)\pmod{p},$$ where $B_n(x)$ denotes the Bernoulli polynomial of degree $n$. As an application, we determine $\sum_{n=1}^{p-1}g_n$ and $\sum_{n=1}^{p-1}h_n$ modulo $p^3$, where
$$g_n=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom nk^2\binom{2k}k\quad\mbox{and}\quad h_n=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom nk^2C_k$$ with $C_k=\binom{2k}k/(k+1)$.
On the representation of finite distributive lattices
A simple but elegant result of Rival states that every sublattice $L$ of a finite distributive lattice $\mathcal{P}$ can be constructed from $\mathcal{P}$ by removing a particular family $\mathcal{I}_L$ of its irreducible intervals.
Applying this in the case that $\mathcal{P}$ is a product of a finite set $\mathcal{C}$ of chains, we get a one-to-one correspondence $L \mapsto \mathcal{D}_\mathcal{P}(L)$ between the sublattices of $\mathcal{P}$ and the preorders spanned by a canonical sublattice $\mathcal{C}^\infty$ of $\mathcal{P}$.
We then show that $L$ is a tight sublattice of the product of chains $\mathcal{P}$ if and only if $\mathcal{D}_\mathcal{P}(L)$ is asymmetric. This yields a one-to-one correspondence between the tight sublattices of $\mathcal{P}$ and the posets spanned by its poset $J(\mathcal{P})$ of non-zero join-irreducible elements.
With this we recover and extend, among other classical results, the correspondence derived from results of Birkhoff and Dilworth, between the tight embeddings of a finite distributive lattice $L$ into products of chains, and the chain decompositions of its poset $J(L)$ of non-zero join-irreducible elements.

We use a Mayer-Vietoris-like spectral sequence to establish vanishing results for the cohomology of complements of linear and elliptic hyperplane arrangements, as part of a more general framework involving duality and abelian duality properties of spaces and groups. In the process, we consider cohomology of local systems with a general, Cohen-Macaulay-type condition. As a result, we recover known vanishing theorems for rank-1 local systems as well as group ring coefficients, and obtain new generalizations.
