Partial characterizations of 1-perfectly orientable graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the class of 1-perfectly orientable graphs, that is, graphs having an orientation in which every out-neighborhood induces a tournament. 1-perfectly orientable graphs form a common generalization of chordal graphs and circular arc graphs. Even though they can be recognized in polynomial time, little is known about their structure. In this paper, we develop several results on 1-perfectly orientable graphs. In particular, we: (i) give a characterization of 1-perfectly orientable graphs in terms of edge clique covers, (ii) identify several graph transformations preserving the class of 1-perfectly orientable graphs, (iii) exhibit an infinite family of minimal forbidden induced minors for the class of 1-perfectly orientable graphs, and (iv) characterize the class of 1-perfectly orientable graphs within the classes of cographs and of cobipartite graphs. The class of 1-perfectly orientable co-bipartite graphs coincides with the class of co-bipartite circular arc graphs.

Density of 5/2-critical graphs
A graph G is 5/2-critical if G has no circular 5/2-coloring (or equivalently, homomorphism to C_5), but every proper subgraph of G has one. We prove that every 5/2-critical graph on n>=4 vertices has at least (5n-2)/4 edges, and list all 5/2-critical graphs achieving this bound. This implies that every planar or projective-planar graph of girth at least 10 is 5/2-colorable.
Rainbow Ramsey simple structures
Published • View Publication • BIB
A relational structure $\mathrm{R}$ is {\em rainbow Ramsey} if for every finite induced substructure $\mathrm{C}$ of $\mathrm{R}$ and every colouring of the copies of $\mathrm{C}$ with countably many colours, such that each colour is used at most $k$ times for a fixed $k$, there exists a copy $\mathrm{R}^\ast$ of $\mathrm{R}$ so that the copies of $\mathrm{C}$ in $\mathrm{R^\ast}$ use each colour at most once. We show that certain ultrahomogenous binary relational structures, for example the Rado graph, are rainbow Ramsey. Via compactness this then implies that for all finite graphs $\mathrm{B}$ and $\mathrm{C}$ and $k \in ω$, there exists a graph $\mathrm{A}$ so that for every colouring of the copies of $\mathrm{C}$ in $\mathrm{A}$ such that each colour is used at most $k$ times, there exists a copy $\mathrm{B}^\ast$ of $\mathrm{B}$ in $\mathrm{A}$ so that the copies of $\mathrm{C}$ in $\mathrm{B^\ast}$ use each colour at most once.

Symmetric unimodal expansions of excedances in colored permutations
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, 52, part A, 174-196, 2016 • View Publication • BIB
We consider several generalizations of the classical $γ$-positivity of Eulerian polynomials (and their derangement analogues) using generating functions and combinatorial theory of continued fractions. For the symmetric group, we prove an expansion formula for inversions and excedances as well as a similar expansion for derangements. We also prove the $γ$-positivity for Eulerian polynomials for derangements of type $B$. More general expansion formulae are also given for Eulerian polynomials for $r$-colored derangements. Our results answer and generalize several recent open problems in the literature.

Morphing Schnyder drawings of planar triangulations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the problem of morphing between two planar drawings of the same triangulated graph, maintaining straight-line planarity. A paper in SODA 2013 gave a morph that consists of $O(n^2)$ steps where each step is a linear morph that moves each of the $n$ vertices in a straight line at uniform speed. However, their method imitates edge contractions so the grid size of the intermediate drawings is not bounded and the morphs are not good for visualization purposes. Using Schnyder embeddings, we are able to morph in $O(n^2)$ linear morphing steps and improve the grid size to $O(n)\times O(n)$ for a significant class of drawings of triangulations, namely the class of weighted Schnyder drawings. The morphs are visually attractive. Our method involves implementing the basic "flip" operations of Schnyder woods as linear morphs.

Disjoint paths in tournaments
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given $k$ pairs of vertices $(s_i,t_i)$, $1\le i\le k$, of a digraph $G$, how can we test whether there exist $k$ vertex-disjoint directed paths from $s_i$ to $t_i$ for $1\le i\le k$? This is NP-complete in general digraphs, even for $k = 2$, but for $k=2$ there is a polynomial-time algorithm when $G$ is a tournament (or more generally, a semicomplete digraph), due to Bang-Jensen and Thomassen. Here we prove that for all fixed $k$ there is a polynomial-time algorithm to solve the problem when $G$ is semicomplete.

Infinitesimal generators for a class of polynomial processes
Published in Studia Mathematica 229 (2015), 73-93 • View Publication • BIB
We study the infinitesimal generators of evolutions of linear mappings on the space of polynomials, which correspond to a special class of Markov processes with polynomial regressions called quadratic harnesses. We relate the infinitesimal generator to the unique solution of a certain commutation equation, and we use the commutation equation to find an explicit formula for the infinitesimal generator of free quadratic harnesses.
Combinatorial approach of certain generalized Stirling numbers
A combinatorial methods are used to investigate some properties of certain generalized Stirling numbers, including explicit formula and recurrence relations. Furthermore, an expression of these numbers with symmetric function is deduced.

On the symmetry of the Laplacian spectra of signed graphs
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications, Vol. 495, pp. 24-37 (2016) • View Publication • BIB
We study the symmetry properties of the spectra of normalized Laplacians on signed graphs. We find a new machinery that generates symmetric spectra for signed graphs, which includes bipartiteness of unsigned graphs as a special case. Moreover, we prove a fundamental connection between the symmetry of the spectrum and the existence of damped two-periodic solutions for the discrete-time heat equation on the graph.
On Structural Decompositions of Finite Frames
Published • View Publication • BIB
A frame in an $n$-dimensional Hilbert space $H_n$ is a possibly redundant collection of vectors $\{f_i\}_{i\in I}$ that span the space. A tight frame is a generalization of an orthonormal basis. A frame $\{f_i\}_{i\in I}$ is said to be scalable if there exist nonnegative scalars $\{c_i\}_{i\in I}$ such that $\{c_if_i\}_{i\in I}$ is a tight frame. In this paper we study the combinatorial structure of frames and their decomposition into tight or scalable subsets by using partially-ordered sets (posets). We define the factor poset of a frame $\{f_i\}_{i\in I}$ to be a collection of subsets of $I$ ordered by inclusion so that nonempty $J\subseteq I$ is in the factor poset if and only if $\{f_j\}_{j\in J}$ is a tight frame for $H_n$. A similar definition is given for the scalability poset of a frame. We prove conditions which factor posets satisfy and use these to study the inverse factor poset problem, which inquires when there exists a frame whose factor poset is some given poset $P$. We determine a necessary condition for solving the inverse factor poset problem in $H_n$ which is also sufficient for $H_2$. We describe how factor poset structure of frames is preserved under orthogonal projections. We also consider the enumeration of the number of possible factor posets and bounds on the size of factors posets. We then turn our attention to scalable frames and present partial results regarding when a frame can be scaled to have a given factor poset.

On a memory game and preferential attachment graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In a recent paper Velleman and Warrington analyzed the expected values of some of the parameters in a memory game, namely, the length of the game, the waiting time for the first match, and the number of lucky moves. In this paper we continue this direction of investigation and obtain the limiting distributions of those parameters. More specifically, we prove that when suitably normalized, these quantities converge in distribution to a normal, Rayleigh, and Poisson random variable, respectively. We also make a connection between the memory game and one of the models of preferential attachment graphs. In particular, as a by--product of our methods we obtain simpler proofs (although without rate of convergence) of some of the results of Peköz, Röllin, and Ross on the joint limiting distributions of the degrees of the first few vertices in preferential attachment graphs. For proving that the length of the game is asymptotically normal, our main technical tool is a limit result for the joint distribution of the number of balls in a multi--type generalized Pólya urn model.

On the covariances of outdegrees in random plane recursive trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 2005 Janson, extending earlier work of Mahmoud, Smythe, and Szymański, established the joint asymptotic normality of the outdegrees of a random plane recursive tree. In particular, he gave an explicit description of the limiting covariance matrix. Our aim here is to provide substantially simplified expression for the limiting covariance matrix.

New Bounds For Frameproof Codes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Frameproof codes are used to fingerprint digital data. It can prevent copyrighted materials from unauthorized use. In this paper, we study upper and lower bounds for $w$-frameproof codes of length $N$ over an alphabet of size $q$. The upper bound is based on a combinatorial approach and the lower bound is based on a probabilistic construction. Both bounds can improve previous results when $q$ is small compared to $w$, say $cq\leq w$ for some constant $c\leq q$. Furthermore, we pay special attention to binary frameproof codes. We show a binary $w$-frameproof code of length $N$ can not have more than $N$ codewords if $N<\binom{w+1}{2}$.

On Schur 3-groups
Published in Siberian Electronic Mathematical Reports, 12 (2015) 223-331 • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a finite group. If $Γ$ is a permutation group with $G_{right}\leqΓ\leq Sym(G)$ and $\mathcal{S}$ is the set of orbits of the stabilizer of the identity $e=e_{G}$ in $Γ$, then the $\mathbb{Z}$-submodule $\mathcal{A}(Γ,G)=Span_{\mathbb{Z}}\{\underline{X}:\ X\in\mathcal{S}\}$ of the group ring $\mathbb{Z} G$ is an $S$-ring as it was observed by Schur. Following Pöschel an $S$-ring $\mathcal{A}$ over $G$ is said to be schurian if there exists a suitable permutation group $Γ$ such that $\mathcal{A}=\mathcal{A}(Γ,G)$. A finite group $G$ is called a Schur group if every $S$-ring over $G$ is schurian. We prove that the groups $M_{3^n}=\langle a,b\;|\:a^{3^{n-1}}=b^3=e,a^b=a^{3^{n-2}+1}\rangle$, where $n\geq3$, are not Schur. Modulo previously obtained results, it follows that every Schur $p$-group is abelian whenever $p$ is an odd prime.

BMO and exponential Orlicz space estimates of the discrepancy function in arbitrary dimension
Published • View Publication • BIB
In the current paper we obtain discrepancy estimates in exponential Orlicz and BMO spaces in arbitrary dimension $d \ge 3$. In particular, we use dyadic harmonic analysis to prove that for the so-called digital nets of order $2$ the BMO${}^d$ and $\exp \big( L^{2/(d-1)} \big)$ norms of the discrepancy function are bounded above by $(\log N)^{\frac{d-1}{2}}$. The latter bound has been recently conjectured in several papers and is consistent with the best known low-discrepancy constructions. Such estimates play an important role as an intermediate step between the well-understood $L_p$ bounds and the notorious open problem of finding the precise $L_\infty$ asymptotics of the discrepancy function in higher dimensions, which is still elusive.
On the Classification of MDS Codes
Published in IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 61(12) 2015, 6485-6492 • View Publication • BIB
A $q$-ary code of length $n$, size $M$, and minimum distance $d$ is called an $(n,M,d)_q$ code. An $(n,q^{k},n-k+1)_q$ code is called a maximum distance separable (MDS) code. In this work, some MDS codes over small alphabets are classified. It is shown that every $(k+d-1,q^k,d)_q$ code with $k\geq 3$, $d \geq 3$, $q \in \{5,7\}$ is equivalent to a linear code with the same parameters. This implies that the $(6,5^4,3)_5$ code and the $(n,7^{n-2},3)_7$ MDS codes for $n\in\{6,7,8\}$ are unique. The classification of one-error-correcting $8$-ary MDS codes is also finished; there are $14$, $8$, $4$, and $4$ equivalence classes of $(n,8^{n-2},3)_8$ codes for $n=6,7,8,9$, respectively. One of the equivalence classes of perfect $(9,8^7,3)_8$ codes corresponds to the Hamming code and the other three are nonlinear codes for which there exists no previously known construction.

Canonical forms of $2\times 3 \times 3$ tensors over the real field, algebraically closed fields, and finite fields
Published • View Publication • BIB
We classify the orbits of elements of the tensor product spaces ${\mathbb{F}}^2\otimes {\mathbb{F}}^3 \otimes {\mathbb{F}}^3$ for all finite; real; and algebraically closed fields under the action of two natural groups. The result can also be interpreted as the classification of the orbits in the $17$-dimensional projective space of the Segre variety product of a projective line and two projective planes. This extends the classification of the orbits in the $7$-dimensional projective space of the Segre variety product of three projective lines [M. Lavrauw and J. Sheekey: Orbits of the stabiliser group of the Segre variety product of three projective lines, Finite Fields Appl. (2014)]. The proof is geometric in nature, relies on properties of the Segre embedding, and uses the terminology of projective spaces.
On factorisations of complete graphs into circulant graphs and the Oberwolfach Problem
Published • View Publication • BIB
Various results on factorisations of complete graphs into circulant graphs and on 2-factorisations of these circulant graphs are proved. As a consequence, a number of new results on the Oberwolfach Problem are obtained. For example, a complete solution to the Oberwolfach Problem is given for every 2-regular graph of order 2p where p = 5 (mod 8) is prime.

Permutation sorting and a game on graphs
We introduce a game on graphs. By a theorem of Zermelo, each instance of the game on a finite graph is determined. While the general decision problem on which player has a winning strategy in a given instance of the game is unsolved, we solve the decision problem for a specific class of finite graphs. This result is then applied to a permutation sorting game to prove the optimality of a proportional bound under which TWO has a winning strategy.
