Counting K_4-Subdivisions

A fundamental theorem in graph theory states that any 3-connected graph contains a subdivision of $K_4$. As a generalization, we ask for the minimum number of $K_4$-subdivisions that are contained in every $3$-connected graph on $n$ vertices. We prove that there are $Ω(n^3)$ such $K_4$-subdivisions and show that the order of this bound is tight for infinitely many graphs. We further investigate a better bound in dependence on $m$ and prove that the computational complexity of the problem of counting the exact number of $K_4$-subdivisions is $\#P$-hard.

The generic digraph $(D,E)$ is the unique countable homogeneous digraph that embeds all finite digraphs. In this paper, we determine the lattice of reducts of $(D,E)$, where a structure $\mathcal{M}$ is a reduct of $(D,E)$ if it has domain $D$ and all its $\emptyset$-definable relations are $\emptyset$-definable relations of $(D,E)$. As $(D,E)$ is $\aleph_0$-categorical, this is equivalent to determining the lattice of closed groups that lie in between Aut$(D,E)$ and Sym$(D)$.
Note on the Sum of Powers of Signless Laplacian Eigenvalues of Graphs
For a simple graph $G$ and a real number $α$ $\left(α\neq 0,1\right) $ the graph invariant $s_α\left(G\right) $ is equal to the sum of powers of signless Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$. In this note, we present some new bounds on $s_α\left(G\right) $. As a result of these bounds, we also give some results on incidence energy.

We consider higher-dimensional generalizations of the normalized Laplacian and the adjacency matrix of graphs and study their eigenvalues for the Linial-Meshulam model $X^k(n,p)$ of random $k$-dimensional simplicial complexes on $n$ vertices. We show that for $p=Ω(\log n/n)$, the eigenvalues of these matrices are a.a.s. concentrated around two values. The main tool, which goes back to the work of Garland, are arguments that relate the eigenvalues of these matrices to those of graphs that arise as links of $(k-2)$-dimensional faces. Garland's result concerns the Laplacian; we develop an analogous result for the adjacency matrix. The same arguments apply to other models of random complexes which allow for dependencies between the choices of $k$-dimensional simplices. In the second part of the paper, we apply this to the question of possible higher-dimensional analogues of the discrete Cheeger inequality, which in the classical case of graphs relates the eigenvalues of a graph and its edge expansion. It is very natural to ask whether this generalizes to higher dimensions and, in particular, whether the higher-dimensional Laplacian spectra capture the notion of coboundary expansion - a generalization of edge expansion that arose in recent work of Linial and Meshulam and of Gromov. We show that this most straightforward version of a higher-dimensional discrete Cheeger inequality fails, in quite a strong way: For every $k\geq 2$ and $n\in \mathbb{N}$, there is a $k$-dimensional complex $Y^k_n$ on $n$ vertices that has strong spectral expansion properties (all nontrivial eigenvalues of the normalised $k$-dimensional Laplacian lie in the interval $[1-O(1/\sqrt{n}),1+O(1/\sqrt{n})]$) but whose coboundary expansion is bounded from above by $O(\log n/n)$ and so tends to zero as $n\rightarrow \infty$; moreover, $Y^k_n$ can be taken to have vanishing integer homology in dimension less than $k$.
On some automorphism related parameters in graphs
In this paper, we deduce some properties of $f$-sets of connected graphs. Also, we introduce the concept of fixing share of each vertex of a fixing set $D$ to see the participation of each vertex when fixing a connected graph $G$. We define a parameter, called the fixing percentage, by using the concept of fixing share, which is helpful in determining the measure of the amount of fixing done by the elements of $D$ in $G$.
Tight cycles and regular slices in dense hypergraphs

We study properties of random subcomplexes of partitions returned by (a suitable form of) the Strong Hypergraph Regularity Lemma, which we call regular slices. We argue that these subcomplexes capture many important structural properties of the original hypergraph. Accordingly we advocate their use in extremal hypergraph theory, and explain how they can lead to considerable simplifications in existing proofs in this field. We also use them for establishing the following two new results.
Firstly, we prove a hypergraph extension of the Erdős-Gallai Theorem: for every $δ>0$ every sufficiently large $k$-uniform hypergraph with at least $(α+δ)\binom{n}{k}$ edges contains a tight cycle of length $αn$ for each $α\in[0,1]$.
Secondly, we find (asymptotically) the minimum codegree requirement for a $k$-uniform $k$-partite hypergraph, each of whose parts has $n$ vertices, to contain a tight cycle of length $αkn$, for each $0<α<1$.

Recently, Bill Chen, together with his disciples Alvin Dai and Robin Zhou, discovered, and very elegantly proved, an algebraic equation satisfied by the generating function enumerating 123-avoiding words with two occurrences of each of 1, ..., n. Inspired by this result, we present an algorithm for finding such an algebraic equation for the ordinary generating function enumerating 123-avoiding words with exactly r occurrences of each of 1, ... n for any positive integer r, thereby proving that they are algebraic and not merely D-finite (a fact that is promised by WZ theory). Our algorithm consists of presenting an algebraic enumeration scheme, combined with the Buchberger algorithm

A graph is apex if there is a vertex whose deletion makes the graph planar, and doublecross if it can be drawn in the plane with only two crossings, both incident with the infinite region in the natural sense. In 1966, Tutte conjectured that every two-edge-connected cubic graph with no Petersen graph minor is three-edge-colourable. With Neil Robertson, two of us showed that this is true in general if it is true for apex graphs and doublecross graphs. In another paper, two of us solved the apex case, but the doublecross case remained open. Here we solve the doublecross case; that is, we prove that every two-edge-connected doublecross cubic graph is three-edge-colourable. The proof method is a variant on the proof of the four-colour theorem.
Cosets, Voltages, and Derived Embeddings
An ordinary voltage graph embedding of a graph in a surface encodes a certain kind of highly symmetric covering space of that surface. Given an ordinary voltage graph embedding of a graph $G$ in a surface with voltage group $A$ and a connected subgraph $H$ of $G$, we define special subgroups of $A$ that depend on $H$ and show how cosets of these groups in $A$ can be used to find topological information concerning the derived embedding without constructing the whole covering space. Our strongest theorems treat the case that $H$ is a cycle and the fiber over $H$ is a disjoint union of cycles with annular neighborhoods, in which case we are able to deduce specific symmetry properties of the derived embeddings. We give infinite families of examples that demonstrate the usefulness of our results.
Maximizing proper colorings on graphs

The number of proper $q$-colorings of a graph $G$, denoted by $P_G(q)$, is an important graph parameter that plays fundamental role in graph theory, computational complexity theory and other related fields. We study an old problem of Linial and Wilf to find the graphs with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges which maximize this parameter. This problem has attracted much research interest in recent years, however little is known for general $m,n,q$. Using analytic and combinatorial methods, we characterize the asymptotic structure of extremal graphs for fixed edge density and $q$. Moreover, we disprove a conjecture of Lazebnik, which states that the Turán graph $T_s(n)$ has more $q$-colorings than any other graph with the same number of vertices and edges. Indeed, we show that there are infinite many counterexamples in the range $q = O({s^2}/{\log s})$. On the other hand, when $q$ is larger than some constant times ${s^2}/{\log s}$, we confirm that the Turán graph $T_s(n)$ asymptotically is the extremal graph achieving the maximum number of $q$-colorings. Furthermore, other (new and old) results on various instances of the Linial-Wilf problem are also established.
The two-point function of bicolored planar maps

We compute the distance-dependent two-point function of vertex-bicolored planar maps, i.e., maps whose vertices are colored in black and white so that no adjacent vertices have the same color. By distance-dependent two-point function, we mean the generating function of these maps with both a marked oriented edge and a marked vertex which are at a prescribed distance from each other. As customary, the maps are enumerated with arbitrary degree-dependent face weights, but the novelty here is that we also introduce color-dependent vertex weights. Explicit expressions are given for vertex-bicolored maps with bounded face degrees in the form of ratios of determinants of fixed size. Our approach is based on a slice decomposition of maps which relates the distance-dependent two-point function to the coefficients of the continued fraction expansions of some distance-independent map generating functions. Special attention is paid to the case of vertex-bicolored quadrangulations and hexangulations, whose two-point functions are also obtained in a more direct way involving equivalences with hard dimer statistics. A few consequences of our results, as well as some extension to vertex-tricolored maps, are also discussed.
Barycenters of points that are constrained to a polytope skeleton
We give a short and simple proof of a recent result of Dobbins that any point in an $nd$-polytope is the barycenter of $n$ points in the $d$-skeleton. This new proof builds on the constraint method that we recently introduced to prove Tverberg-type results.

In this paper we show that there exists a constant $C>0$ such that for any graph $G$ on $Ck\ln k$ vertices either $G$ or its complement $\bar{G}$ has an induced subgraph on $k$ vertices with minimum degree at least $\frac12(k-1)$. This affirmatively answers a question of Erdős and Pach from 1983.
The Jacobian Conjecture, a Reduction of the Degree to the Quadratic Case

The Jacobian Conjecture states that any locally invertible polynomial system in C^n is globally invertible with polynomial inverse. C. W. Bass et al. (1982) proved a reduction theorem stating that the conjecture is true for any degree of the polynomial system if it is true in degree three. This degree reduction is obtained with the price of increasing the dimension n. We prove here a theorem concerning partial elimination of variables, which implies a reduction of the generic case to the quadratic one. The price to pay is the introduction of a supplementary parameter 0<n'< n, parameter which represents the dimension of a linear subspace where some particular conditions on the system must hold. We first give a purely algebraic proof of this reduction result and we then expose a distinct proof, in a Quantum Field Theoretical formulation, using the intermediate field method.

An element of a Coxeter group $W$ is fully commutative if any two of its reduced decompositions are related by a series of transpositions of adjacent commuting generators. In the present work, we focus on fully commutative involutions, which are characterized in terms of Viennot's heaps. By encoding the latter by Dyck-type lattice walks, we enumerate fully commutative involutions according to their length, for all classical finite and affine Coxeter groups. In the finite cases, we also find explicit expressions for their generating functions with respect to the major index. Finally in affine type $A$, we connect our results to Fan--Green's cell structure of the corresponding Temperley--Lieb algebra.

In this work we introduce and study various generalizations of the notion of increasingly labelled trees, where the label of a child node is always larger than the label of its parent node, to multilabelled tree families, where the nodes in the tree can get multiple labels. For all tree classes we show characterizations of suitable generating functions for the tree enumeration sequence via differential equations. Furthermore, for several combinatorial classes of multilabelled increasing tree families we present explicit enumeration results. We also present multilabelled increasing tree families of an elliptic nature, where the exponential generating function can be expressed in terms of the Weierstrass-p function or the lemniscate sine function. Furthermore, we show how to translate enumeration formulas for multilabelled increasing trees into hook-length formulas for trees and present a general "reverse engineering" method to discover hook-length formulas associated to such tree families.

Let $C(n)$ denote the maximum number of induced copies of 5-cycles in graphs on $n$ vertices. For $n$ large enough, we show that $C(n)=a\cdot b\cdot c \cdot d \cdot e + C(a)+C(b)+C(c)+C(d)+C(e)$, where $a+b+c+d+e = n$ and $a,b,c,d,e$ are as equal as possible.
Moreover, if $n$ is a power of 5, we show that the unique graph on $n$ vertices maximizing the number of induced 5-cycles is an iterated blow-up of a 5-cycle.
Sunflowers and Testing Triangle-Freeness of Functions

A function $f: \mathbb{F}_2^n \rightarrow \{0,1\}$ is triangle-free if there are no $x_1,x_2,x_3 \in \mathbb{F}_2^n$ satisfying $x_1+x_2+x_3=0$ and $f(x_1)=f(x_2)=f(x_3)=1$. In testing triangle-freeness, the goal is to distinguish with high probability triangle-free functions from those that are $\varepsilon$-far from being triangle-free. It was shown by Green that the query complexity of the canonical tester for the problem is upper bounded by a function that depends only on $\varepsilon$ (GAFA, 2005), however the best known upper bound is a tower type function of $1/\varepsilon$. The best known lower bound on the query complexity of the canonical tester is $1/\varepsilon^{13.239}$ (Fu and Kleinberg, RANDOM, 2014).
In this work we introduce a new approach to proving lower bounds on the query complexity of triangle-freeness. We relate the problem to combinatorial questions on collections of vectors in $\mathbb{Z}_D^n$ and to sunflower conjectures studied by Alon, Shpilka, and Umans (Comput. Complex., 2013). The relations yield that a refutation of the Weak Sunflower Conjecture over $\mathbb{Z}_4$ implies a super-polynomial lower bound on the query complexity of the canonical tester for triangle-freeness. Our results are extended to testing $k$-cycle-freeness of functions with domain $\mathbb{F}_p^n$ for every $k \geq 3$ and a prime $p$. In addition, we generalize the lower bound of Fu and Kleinberg to $k$-cycle-freeness for $k \geq 4$ by generalizing the construction of uniquely solvable puzzles due to Coppersmith and Winograd (J. Symbolic Comput., 1990).

We prove that each semi-invariant ring of the complete triple flag of length $n$ is an upper cluster algebra associated to an ice hive quiver. We find a rational polyhedral cone ${\sf G}_n$ such that the generic cluster character maps its lattice points onto a basis of the cluster algebra. As an application, we use the cluster algebra structure to find a special minimal set of generators for these semi-invariant rings when $n$ is small.
The geometry of flip graphs and mapping class groups

The space of topological decompositions into triangulations of a surface has a natural graph structure where two triangulations share an edge if they are related by a so-called flip. This space is a sort of combinatorial Teichmüller space and is quasi-isometric to the underlying mapping class group. We study this space in two main directions. We first show that strata corresponding to triangulations containing a same multiarc are strongly convex within the whole space and use this result to deduce properties about the mapping class group. We then focus on the quotient of this space by the mapping class group to obtain a type of combinatorial moduli space. In particular, we are able to identity how the diameters of the resulting spaces grow in terms of the complexity of the underlying surfaces.
