We study the tropicalization of the cone of positive semidefinite matrices over the ordered field of real Puiseux series. The tropical PSD matrices form the normal cone of the Newton polytope of the symmetric determinant at the vertex corresponding to the product of diagonal entries. We find generators and defining inequalities of the cone. The PSD tropical quadratic forms are those that induce the trivial subdivision on the standard simplex dilated by two. We also show that the tropical PSD cone is the tropical convex hull of the set of symmetric matrices of tropical rank one and that every tropical PSD matrix can be factored as a tropical product of a matrix and its transpose.

In 2003, Ciucu presented a unified way to enumerate tilings of lattice regions by using a certain Reduction Theorem (Ciucu, Perfect Matchings and Perfect Powers, Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, 2003). In this paper we continue this line of work by investigating new families of lattice regions whose tilings are enumerated by perfect powers or products of several perfect powers. We prove a multi-parameter generalization of Bo-Yin Yang's theorem on fortresses (B.-Y. Yang, Ph.D. thesis, Department of Mathematics, MIT, MA, 1991). On the square lattice with zigzag paths, we consider two particular families of regions whose numbers of tilings are always a power of 3 or twice a power of 3. The latter result provides a new proof for a conjecture of Matt Blum first proved by Ciucu. We also consider several new lattices obtained by periodically applying two simple subgraph replacement rules to the square lattice. On some of those lattices, we get new families of regions whose numbers of tilings are given by products of several perfect powers. In addition, we prove a simple product formula for the number of tilings of a certain family of regions on a variant of the triangular lattice.
Higher order log-monotonicity of combinatorial sequences
A sequence $\{z_n\}_{n\geq0}$ is called ratio log-convex in the sense that the ratio sequence $\{\frac{z_{n+1}}{z_n}\}_{n\geq0}$ is log-convex. Based on a three-term recurrence for sequences, we develop techniques for dealing with the ratio log-convexity of ratio sequences. As applications, we prove that the ratio sequences of numbers, including the derangement numbers, the Motzkin numbers, the Fine numbers, Franel numbers and the Domb numbers are ratio log-convex, respectively. Finally, we not only prove that the sequence of derangement numbers is asymptotically infinitely log-monotonic, but also show some infinite log-monotonicity of some numbers related to the Gamma function, in particular, implying two results of Chen {\it et al.} on the infinite log-monotonicity of the Catalan numbers and the central binomial coefficients.

We show that the hereditary discrepancy of homogeneous arithmetic progressions is lower bounded by $n^{1/O(\log \log n)}$. This bound is tight up to the constant in the exponent. Our lower bound goes via proving an exponential lower bound on the discrepancy of set systems of subcubes of the boolean cube $\{0, 1\}^d$.
Beyond the Shannon's Bound
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a multigraph of maximum degree $Δ$. The edges of $G$ can be colored with at most $\frac{3}{2}Δ$ colors by Shannon's theorem. We study lower bounds on the size of subgraphs of $G$ that can be colored with $Δ$ colors.
Shannon's Theorem gives a bound of $\fracΔ{\lfloor\frac{3}{2}Δ\rfloor}|E|$. However, for $Δ=3$, Kamiński and Kowalik [SWAT'10] showed that there is a 3-edge-colorable subgraph of size at least $\frac{7}{9}|E|$, unless $G$ has a connected component isomorphic to $K_3+e$ (a $K_3$ with an arbitrary edge doubled). Here we extend this line of research by showing that $G$ has a $Δ$-edge colorable subgraph with at least $\fracΔ{\lfloor\frac{3}{2}Δ\rfloor-1}|E|$ edges, unless $Δ$ is even and $G$ contains $\fracΔ{2}K_3$ or $Δ$ is odd and $G$ contains $\frac{Δ-1}{2}K_3+e$. Moreover, the subgraph and its coloring can be found in polynomial time.
Our results have applications in approximation algorithms for the Maximum $k$-Edge-Colorable Subgraph problem, where given a graph $G$ (without any bound on its maximum degree or other restrictions) one has to find a $k$-edge-colorable subgraph with maximum number of edges. In particular, for every even $k \ge 4$ we obtain a $\frac{2k+2}{3k+2}$-approximation and for every odd $k\ge 5$ we get a $\frac{2k+1}{3k}$-approximation. When $4\le k \le 13$ this improves over earlier algorithms due to Feige et al. [APPROX'02]

A graph $G$ is said to be \textit{determined by its generalized spectrum} (DGS for short) if for any graph $H$, $H$ and $G$ are cospectral with cospectral complements implies that $H$ is isomorphic to $G$. In \cite{WX,WX1}, Wang and Xu gave some methods for determining whether a family of graphs are DGS. In this paper, we shall review some of the old results and present some new ones along this line of research.

Let $T_1$, $T_2$ be two commuting probability measure-preserving actions of a countable amenable group such that the group spanned by these actions acts ergodically. We show that $μ(A\cap T_1^g A\cap T_1^g T_2^g A) > μ(A)^4-ε$ on a syndetic set for any measurable set $A$ and any $ε>0$. The proof uses the concept of a sated system introduced by Austin.

The regular objects in various categories, such as maps, hypermaps or covering spaces, can be identified with the normal subgroups N of a given group Γ, with quotient group isomorphic to Γ/N. It is shown how to enumerate such objects with a given finite automorphism group G, how to represent them all as quotients of a single regular object U(G), and how they are acted on by the outer automorphism group of Γ. Examples constructed include kaleidoscopic maps with trinity symmetry.

The Catalan numbers are well-known to be the answer to many different counting problems, and so there are many different families of sets whose cardinalities are the Catalan numbers. We show how such a family can be given the structure of a simplicial set. We show how the low-dimensional parts of this simplicial set classify, in a precise sense, the structures of monoid and of monoidal category. This involves aspects of combinatorics, algebraic topology, quantum groups, logic, and category theory.

We investigate the combinatorial interplay between automorphisms and opposition in (primarily finite) generalised polygons. We provide restrictions on the fixed element structures of automorphisms of a generalised polygon mapping no chamber to an opposite chamber. Furthermore, we give a complete classification of automorphisms of finite generalised polygons which map at least one point and at least one line to an opposite, but map no chamber to an opposite chamber. Finally, we show that no automorphism of a finite thick generalised polygon maps all chambers to opposite chambers, except possibly in the case of generalised quadrangles with coprime parameters.
Almost Commutative Probability Theory
We solve two longstanding major problems in Free Probability. This is achieved by generalising the theory to one with values in arbitrary commutative algebras. We prove the existence of the multi-variable $S$-transform, and show that it is naturally realised as a faithful linear representation. Further, we prove that in dimension one, the analog of the classical relation between addition and multiplication of independent random variables holds for free random variables, if the co-domain is an algebra over the rationals. In this case the multiplicative problem can be reduced to the additive one, which is not true in dimensions greater than one. Finally, we classify the groups which arise as joint distributions of $n$-tuples of non-commutative random variables, endowed with the free convolution product, which is the binary operation that encodes the multiplication of free $n$-tuples.

We show that the local limit of unicellular maps whose genus is proportional to the number of edges is a supercritical geometric Galton-Watson tree conditioned to survive. The proof relies on enumeration results obtained via the recent bijection given by the second author together with Feray and Fusy.

In this paper we extend the concept of energy to signed digraphs. We obtain Coulson's integral formula for energy of signed digraphs. Formulae for energies of signed directed cycles are computed and it is shown that energy of non cycle balanced signed directed cycles increases monotonically with respect to number of vertices. Characterization of signed digraphs having energy equal to zero is given. We extend the concept of non complete extended $p$ sum (or briefly, NEPS) to signed digraphs. An infinite family of equienergetic signed digraphs is constructed. Moreover, we extend McClelland's inequality to signed digraphs and also obtain sharp upper bound for energy of signed digraph in terms the number of arcs. Some open problems are also given at the end.
The Four Color Theorem and Trees
Connection of the Four Color Theorem (FCT) with some operations on trees is described. L.H. Kauffman's theorem about FCT and vector cross product is discussed. Operation of transplantation on trees linked with the move of brackets according to the associative law is used to formulate a conjecture. When map is represented as a tying of the trees this conjecture proposes the existence of special coloring of this map. This coloring makes possible successive transplantations such that one of these trees is transformed to another, and all the intermediate maps are colored properly. It means (in terms of L.H. Kauffman) that not only for two different positions of brackets in a product of n factors the associative law works (on special values of factors) but also there is a way of moving brackets that for all intermediate positioning of brackets the associative law is obeyed. Some classes of trees for which the conjecture is proved are presented.

We prove general Cramer type theorems for linear systems over various extensions of the tropical semiring, in which tropical numbers are enriched with an information of multiplicity, sign, or argument. We obtain existence or uniqueness results, which extend or refine earlier results of Gondran and Minoux (1978), Plus (1990), Gaubert (1992), Richter-Gebert, Sturmfels and Theobald (2005) and Izhakian and Rowen (2009). Computational issues are also discussed; in particular, some of our proofs lead to Jacobi and Gauss-Seidel type algorithms to solve linear systems in suitably extended tropical semirings.

We describe a set $\mathcal{R}^{\infty}$ consisting of tuples of integer sequences and provide certain explicit maps on it. We show that this defines a semiregular crystal for $\mathfrak{sl}_{n+1}$ and $\mathfrak{sp}_{2n}$ respectively. Furthermore we define for any dominant integral weight $λ$ a connected subcrystal $\mathcal{R}(λ)$ in $\mathcal{R}^{\infty}$, such that this crystal is isomorphic to the crystal graph $B(λ)$. Finally we provide an explicit description of these connected crystals $\mathcal{R}(λ)$.

The problem of determining the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph that does not contain a 4-cycle has a rich history in extremal graph theory. Using Sidon sets constructed by Bose and Chowla, for each odd prime power $q$ we construct a graph with $q^2 - q - 2$ vertices that does not contain a 4-cycle and has at least $\frac{1}{2}q^3 - q^2 - O(q^{3/4})$ edges. This disproves a conjecture of Abreu, Balbuena, and Labbate concerning the Turán number $\mathrm{ex}(q^2 - q - 2, C_4)$.

Let $S = \mathbb{K}[x_1, \dots, x_n]$ be the polynomial ring over a field $\mathbb{K}$. In this paper we present a criterion for componentwise linearity of powers of monomial ideals. In particular, we prove that if a square-free monomial ideal $I$ contains no variable and some power of $I$ is componentwise linear, then $I$ satisfies gcd condition. For a square-free monomial ideal $I$ which contains no variable, we show that $S/I$ is a Golod ring provided that for some integer $s\geq 1$, the ideal $I^s$ has linear quotient with respect to a monomial order. We also provide a lower bound for some Betti numbers of powers of a square-free monomial ideal which is generated in a single degree.
On some colored Eulerian quasisymmetric functions
Recently, Hyatt introduced some colored Eulerian quasisymmetric function to study the joint distribution of excedance number and major index on colored permutation groups. We show how Hyatt's generating function formula for the fixed point colored Eulerian quasisymmetric functions can be deduced from the Decrease value theorem of Foata and Han. Using this generating function formula, we prove two symmetric function generalizations of the Chung-Graham-Knuth symmetrical Eulerian identity for some flag Eulerian quasisymmetric functions, which are specialized to the flag excedance numbers. Combinatorial proofs of those symmetrical identities are also constructed.
We also study some other properties of the flag Eulerian quasisymmetric functions. In particular, we confirm a recent conjecture of Mongelli [Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, 120 (2013) 1216--1234] about the unimodality of the generating function of the flag excedances over the type B derangements. Moreover, colored versions of the hook factorization and admissible inversions of permutations are found, as well as a new recurrence formula for the $(\maj-\exc,\fexc)$-$q$-Eulerian polynomials.
We introduce a colored analog of Rawlings major index on colored permutations and obtain an interpretation of the colored Eulerian quasisymmetric functions as sums of some fundamental quasisymmetric functions related with them, by applying Stanley's $P$-partition theory and a decomposition of the Chromatic quasisymmetric functions due to Shareshian and Wachs.
Monotonicity and log-behavior of some functions related to the Euler Gamma function

The aim of this paper is to develop analytic techniques to deal with certain monotonicity of combinatorial sequences. (1) A criterion for the monotonicity of the function $\sqrt[x]{f(x)}$ is given, which is a continuous analog for one result of Wang and Zhu. (2) The log-behavior of the functions $θ(x)=\sqrt[x]{2 ζ(x)Γ(x+1)}$ and $F(x)=\sqrt[x]{\frac{Γ(ax+b+1)}{Γ(c x+d+1)Γ(e x+f+1)}}$ is considered, where $ζ(x)$ and $Γ(x)$ are the Riemann zeta function and the Euler Gamma function, respectively. As consequences, the strict log-concavities of the function $θ(x)$ (a conjecture of Chen {\it et al.}) and $\{\sqrt[n]{z_n}\}$ for some combinatorial sequences (including the Bernoulli numbers, the Tangent numbers, the Catalan numbers, the Fuss-Catalan numbers and some Binomial coefficients) are demonstrated. In particular, this contains some results of Chen {\it et al.}, Luca and Stănică. (3). By researching logarithmically complete monotonicity of some functions, the infinite log-monotonicity of the sequence $\{\frac{(n_{0}+ia)!}{(k_0+ib)!(\overline{k_0}+i\overline{b})!}\}_{i\geq0}$ is proved. This generalizes two results of Chen {\it et al.} that both the Catalan numbers $\frac{1}{n+1}\binom{2n}{n}$ and central binomial coefficients $\binom{2n}{n}$ are infinitely log-monotonic and strengths one result of Su and Wang that $\binom{dn}{δn}$ is log-convex in $n$. (4) The asymptotically infinite log-monotonicity of derangement numbers is showed. (5)The logarithmically complete monotonicity of functions $1/\sqrt[x]{a ζ(x+b)Γ(x+c)}$ and $\sqrt[x]{ρ\prod_{i=1}^n\frac{Γ(x+a_i)}{Γ(x+b_i)}}$ is also obtained, which generalizes the results of Lee and Tepedelenlioǧlu, Qi and Li.
